Pokemon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl is the second biggest boxed game launch of 2021 (UK)

It's another blockbuster launch for Pokémon this week, with Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl taking the top two positions in the UK charts.

That's sad, this is why gamefreak will never get with the times...

No Way901d ago

Unfortunately, I agree. Those games could be so much more.. so much better, yet, why should they? They sell like hotcakes, as is - with a smaller budget.

ABizzel1901d ago

Technically Gamefreak didn't make these, they're working on the Arceus game. But to your point I agree.

These are $60 games, and bare minimum upgrades of a 2006 DS game that launched for $40, and still getting away with the foolery of having two versions of the EXACT same core game that swaps 10 - 30 Pokemon in an effort to "encourage trading" but happily sell a double pack at $120. CASH GRAB. The QoL upgrade should be expected and a bare minimum change. No one was asking for a complete revolution of these games, but there is nothing to warrant the price increase for these.

No new forms (Primal Dialga / Palkia / Giratina / Arceus), no Megas (at this point they're gone for good), no Sinnoh-ian forms of newer mons, just nothing. HGSS and ORAS were both significantly better executions of these games, and just another game in one of my favorite franchises for me to skip.

SoulWarrior900d ago

This is my favourite gen, and although the nostalgia is strong for me I completely agree, especially with the last paragraph, the amount of additions ORAS got was great, it added so much and was the last truly "great" pokemon game imo, with this one that are using the "faithful remake" as a cop out to be lazy imo.

metalgod88901d ago

The two original games were fantastic, but it's been a very very long time since I last played them. I bought the double pack and went with Brilliant Diamond first because I love Ho-oh and Entei. I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy it because people are saying its boring and same old, but dude, this game is fantastic.

My opinion:
First, the presentation, UI, and overall graphics are the most clean I think they've ever had. It a simplistic look, but I like it. Second, the quality of life changes significantly improve the game over the original games. I don't need to assign an HM to my pokemon. I can just use the move using the 'Poketch' and bam, done. Also, I can access to my PC at any time.
Third, I can battle and trade online, not just local mp.
I'm sure there's more but, I'm like 6 hours in. I have a LONG way to before I can give it a proper review, but from what I've played so far, it's been fantastic.

The one thing I really really wish the devs would do, is give us the option to TURN OFF exp share.

ActualWhiteMan901d ago

See that to me is what ruins the charm of the original. HM's were permanent and tied up a move slot, they were a serious decision to make. Also we had to walk back to a pokemon center to use a PC, which was a strategy in itself. You had to manage potions and inventory, and spend wisely. The games have gotten too damn easy, too casual and it pisses me off. Ive been playing since I got Pokemon Blue and a Gameboy color for Christmas in 1998. I have played them all since and the GBC era games will always be the best.

metalgod88901d ago (Edited 901d ago )

Bro, I also started from the beginning, Pokemon Red, so I feel you. The thing is, times have changed and it's not the same as it used to be. I mean, if you want to enjoy that experience, go back and play RBY.

I agree, that it is WAY easier than the old games, and they're definitely catering to the younger audience. With that said, some of the quality of life changes are nice and remove some the annoying aspects (in my opinion) such as mobile PC and the HM change. But hey, to each their own.

If you're not a fan of the way pokemon plays today, I'd recommend something like Persona 5 or Disgaea 4.

ActualWhiteMan901d ago

This proves that the new games lack any substance and they just cant make them like they used to. IMO They should have remade Red\Blue\Green first. Then moved to Gen 2\3\4 remakes.

Name Last Name901d ago

FireRed/LeafGreen was the Gen 1 remake. It’s just been so long.

fan_of_gaming901d ago

Gen 1 just had a remake (Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee) on Switch, and Gen 3 had a remake (Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby) not that long ago on 3DS. With the Gen 4 remake now released, Gens 2 & 5 are the next ones that need doing.

Name Last Name901d ago

Gen 2 Remake was HeartGold/SoulSilver

fan_of_gaming901d ago (Edited 901d ago )

yeah I know, I meant that Gen 2 (for it's 2nd remake) & Gen 5 (for it's 1st remake) should be next as those Gens are still on DS, while every other Gen is on the 3DS or Switch.

Name Last Name901d ago

The problem is that remakes take a long time. By the time they remake B/W and X/Y then ORAS will look old like the DS remakes and the cycle has to start again.

FinalFantasyFanatic901d ago

At this point, I don't know why we don't just have a collection of say the first 3 gens on one cartridge, and then the next 2 or 3, surely it would be doable (although you'd have to merge two games together e.g. Red/Blue/Yellow into one game, silver and gold into one, ect...).

I know that will never happen though, because money.

ABizzel1901d ago

FRLG, HGSS, ORAS, are the remakes. The problem is this is just a bare minimum effort compared to any of those, even with the Battle Frontier mess in ORAS.

metalgod88901d ago

I'm not sure what you mean, when you say 'substance' because there's like almost 500 Pokémon in this these two games. They've done a bunch of remakes like Heart Gold/Soul Silver, and Fire Red/Leaf Green.

Honestly, I'd love them make a pokemon game that's just hard. Just a difficult game that requires you to use weaknesses and skills wisely. Sadly, we'll probably never get something like that, and we'll have to leave that type of play style to online play (post game).

see, Rockstar, this is how you do low effort remake/remaster and still have people happily buying it! suckers that they are, they still expect a game that at least runs good!

EA says largest Battlefield team yet is building ‘another tremendous live service’

Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson stated in a recent EA Earnings Call, that the next Battlefield "it is going to be another tremendous live service.”

Another? ANOTHER?

Is he honestly trying to make out like the last Battlefield was a huge success, not just as a game but as a live service game? I'm sure these guys live in their own echo chambers, they are so far removed from reality or they just like talking out of their arse trying to rewrite history.

Also why say such a tone deaf statement when you know the state of live service games at the minute and how many gamers feel about them. Bigging up the next BF game as live service does not give me any excitement or hype.

This is nothing too new
https://www.eurogamer.net/e...

They had plans of a universe of live service games

Also these studios made 2042 there is no new massive team its the same team

Well same team minus the seattle boys that were canned

This is all again same news different year but it seems very few remember what happened before covid.

At least they put car freshner trees up their asses to think smelling their own farts smells good at this point to be so out of touch.

Kena was original announced as console exclusive "for a limited time"..

Inverno22d ago

Not to mention it's also been on PC, so not exclusive at all.

Cacabunga22d ago

Finally.. i think they said it would be time exclusive for like 6 months.

Juancho5122d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Console exclusives are exclusive to certain consoles … really not hard to comprehend unless you’re a salty gamer fighting an imaginary console war.

I just got this game on the PS+ Catalogue to redeem some points on the rewards program, it’s not mindblowing, but it’s a very pretty action adventure game. Not thrilled about it but i pick it up randomly sometimes when i take a break from my usual fare.

Inverno22d ago

It may be "exclusive" to a certain console but it's still multiplatform because it's on more than one platform.

Jin_Sakai22d ago

Amazing game. I wish they’d make a sequel.

Eonjay22d ago

Its available on PS Plus for anyone to try.

Sonic188122d ago

It should go the Nintendo switch as well

Profchaos22d ago

I was thinking this would make a good launch title for the switch 2

roadkillers21d ago

Ah, I was hoping Sony would purchase them.

Elda22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Kena is owned, developed & published by Ember Labs studios & it was a "limited" PS console exclusive. PS having it as a console exclusive for 3 years is enough time to pass it on to another console platform.

VersusDMC22d ago

It's just hack journalism saying 3rd party exclusives going to other competing platforms is the same as 1st party. Shall we say that Nintendo games are going to other consoles since No More Heroes 3, Octopath and Monster Hunter Rise got ported to other consoles? Dumb.

Crows9022d ago

It's also called fake News journalism or bad journalism, misinformation...so many names for it.

Abnor_Mal22d ago

Okay might be showing my age, but back in the days, way back it was called yellow journalism.

DOMination-22d ago

So defensive lol..

If we're so concerned about third party now, can we apply the same logic to games like FF7 Rebirth, Stellar Blade & Helldivers which I regularly see people on here spouting as First Party or "Sony Games"

VersusDMC22d ago

@DOM

If you want to say sea of thieves going to PS5 is the same as Kena going Xbox then go crazy.

It's as dumb as saying Horizon going to xbox is the same as Cuphead going to PS5.

neomahi22d ago

Microsoft began buying timed exclusives and timed DLC starting with GTA IV back on Xbox 360. This didn't used to be a practice until then. I don't ever recall this being a thing

VersusDMC22d ago

Pretty sure the PS2 gen had 3rd party exclusives. Panzer dragoon orta, Jet set , dino crisis 3, steel batallion for xbox. Nintendo had Capcom exclusivity for a bit on RE4, Viewtiful Joe and REmake. Onimusha, Gta, Final Fantasy for Sony.

Probably way more than that.

PS1 gen as well...but most exclusives then were developers chosing cartridge(N64) over CD. You could bring up the Saturn but i believe it just didn't get ports because it had a horrible launch in the states.

Gamer7522d ago

Timed exclusivity was a thing before Xbox existed

Lightning7722d ago

Not even remotely true or maybe you're too young . This practice has been going on since Sega, nintendo and PS1 days.

porkChop22d ago

Not true. Timed exclusivity existed before Xbox even entered the console business. Sony did it, Nintendo did it, and Sega likely did as well.

Profchaos22d ago

I recall this was a practice as early as the NES however Nintendo wrote in their licensing agreement if you want to make games for NES they must be exclusive to the console. Given the closest competitor at the time was the master system they were the only real act in time and the Atari had bombed hard that gen. Nintendo would also threaten to stop supplying games to retailers if they sold unlicensed third party games which and retailers would then be faced with the choice of hey do we sell this tengen garbage or so we want Mario easy choice there was a lot of legal battles in those days.

Also noteable in the more modern era was the Capcom 5 Nintendo got 5 exclusive titles from Capcom.

In the PS1 and N64 era exclusive games were mainly because the system architectures were vastly different it was a huge undertaking to port a game I done recall either company paying for exclusivity and the biggest name games often found their way onto both platforms with bespoke editions like quake 2.

Microsoft definitely threw their wallet around that generation while Sony publicly stated they believed they no longer had to do this and their first party was strong enough to carry them which they went back on pretty quickly after Microsoft walked away with timed exclusive GTA and cod content that really hurt them.

Kena was a really good game, anything that helps it get more exposure is welcomed.

purple10122d ago

what's that one Sony did before Kena that was like Ninetndo's pikimin, I forget, I missed that and it looked fun, might try to grab on sale, it would be my second ONLY ever digital purchase, (as I don't think it was ever physical as its a small game)

Crows9022d ago

Not sure but Sony didn't do kena

purple10122d ago

okay smartie pants, "one sony paid for exclusivity, like they did with Kena"

found it anyway, was called "Bugsnax"

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

neomahi22d ago

I don't think Pinkman and Kena are really the same thing. At the end of the day though, Ember Labs has a really talented animation team, but as game designers they're lacking. It was a really pretty game but, man was it frustrating! Areas you thought you could go but we're blocked off, poor level design, probably what Hellblade II is gonna end up being

purple10122d ago

Pikimin and bugsnax

Not pikimin & Kena

GamingSinceForever22d ago

That was a good game and surprisingly difficult.

blackblades22d ago

Not really, some parts a little bit. Should've tried hard mode.

nitus1021d ago

IMO the best way to play is to choose the easy mode first up to at least the first and second bosses then choose to restart on a harder dificulty with the hardest difficulty being very challenging.

Actually playing on easy mode allows you to find all the items including the "rot" (use your mask to look for footprints) without being that frustrated. By doing this you can always look at your easy saved game map to find to find all items if you eventually play on a harder difficulty.
