The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes (PS5) Review | VGChartz

VGChartz's Issa Maki: "Supermassive Games continues to lead the charge in the medium of interactive storytelling. This 'Choose Your Own Adventure'-inspired, consequential gameplay popularized by Until Dawn has appeared across several titles and platforms over the past generation, yet none rivalled the impact of eight doomed teenagers trapped upon a lonely mountain. I'm happy to report that the trend has largely been broken, and while House of Ashes may fall just short of eclipsing Until Dawn's brilliance, it's easily the best entry in The Dark Pictures Anthology, representing that significant bump needed to move the genre forward in a meaningful way."

Good month imo. I'll play Gotham Knights and House of Ashes. I'm finishing up Disco E on Steam right now - that's a superb game.

Resident evil village for me is the best one this year

Getting lost in that stupid maze like factory with minimal ammo and the half robot drills guys after me was tense.

Castle dimitrescu was awesome as well.

Returnal was awesome aswell but i wouldnt classify that as a horror even if sometimes it was a little creepy

KyRo864d ago

I loved RE8 even though it was a massive departure from what we expect from RE. That factory chapter though was awful. Hands down the worst part of the game. The rest was great.

Flawlessmic864d ago

Agreed i hated the factory, the layout was a disaster, tracking back to make that final key nearly turned me off it haha

But overall it was a great game

RE8 was amazing for the first half. It lost its fear factor for me once you finished the house of the dollmaker. It then sort of turned more RE4 for me. I still adore the game, don't get me wrong. But the castle and the subsequent section were what I hoped for the whole game.

House of Ashes was definitely the stronger horror experience.
Village is pretty much horror-lite; an action game through and through; dialing back a lot of the horror put into 7.

I'd have it at the back of the list.
I got more out of the messed up imagery of Little Nightmares even.

Returnal really shouldn't be on the list for this.

Crows90864d ago (Edited 864d ago )

Why should returnal not be? If they said Hades was horror then I'd agree a game like Hades shouldn't be...since it's definitely nothing to do with horror. But returnal is definitely in the horror genre.

For me it was actually the most tense and horror like experience for me.

I would say resident evil if the ai wasn't so dumb.
Can't speak for house of ashes but if it's anything like until dawn then yeah that probably deserves the first spot.

The first time encountering the biomes and enemies in returnal was definitely horror like for me. Oh and the piano boss dude...geez. that music increasing as you get closer to him.

ultimately this list is put together formed by someone's opinions. So naturally you will have a divide.

Did you play Returnal? It definitely has elements of horror to it. It has some pretty intense psychological horror to it too. Some moments remind of of Get Out. The times wandering around the house were extremely creepy along with the flashbacks.

RE Village for me was tops. I will revisit Returnal when some adjustments are made. Love The Dark Pictures Games which feel like movies.

LucasRuinedChildhood864d ago

What adjustments are you waiting for in Returnal? Just wondering because they already fixed the save issue and did some rebalancing.

Elda864d ago

Some folks want a traditional save instead of a temporary save spot.

hiawa23864d ago (Edited 864d ago )

Elda answered perfectly the adjustment I was referring to. If that never happens, I am fine with that also. What they did really did not fix my issue with the otherwise beautiful, game. I loved the atmosphere, loved the visual style and main character rendering, but that constantly restarting with inferior weapons and fighting over powering foes, just got old for me.
At some point I will get back to the game, but for now too many games to play that are enjoyable, so will focus on those at the moment.

I have yet to play House of Ashes but I don't find the games made by Supermassive Games scary Man of Medan was not scary, Little Hope I liked but I didn't find it scary, even Until Dawn I never thought was scary. I like RE Village more I mean werewolves as an enemy was pretty damn good Tormented Souls also I thought was pretty good.

MrBaskerville864d ago (Edited 864d ago )

I did enjoy Re village a lot, but Mundaun is my favourite horror game of 2021 and possible of all time. Horror games are rarely scary, but this one did some surprisingly cool stuff, first night in the cabin, where you notice stuff outside, I found that unsettling. Northern Journey is my second pick, and then I'd go with Resident Evil.
