Is Metroid Dread better than Super Metroid?

Super Metroid is has better atmosphere and event planning. Dread has better controls by far. Super Metroid is better.

Dread is my first 2D Metroid title. I have been enjoying Dread, but I prefer Metroid Prime, Prime 3 and maybe even Prime 2 over Dread. I’m not too found of Dread’s boss battle difficultly, despite having beat Bloodborne, Dark Souls series, and Ninja Gaiden Black and 2.

Personally, I will never be able to fairly compare Dread to other 2D Metroid tiles. How does the title compare to Super for those that have beaten both? I consistently hear that Super is the best 2D Metroid title, if not the best in the series.

I finished both but I still prefer SM more. Dread isn't bad though, alot better than I thought it would be

As for the bosses, they’re not that hard. Each one you have new abilities to beat them. It’s up to you to remember that.

Is it a better game than Super Metroid in a vacuum? Sure, maybe, who knows. Is it as good a game as Super Metroid was back when it was release, especially when compared to other similar games?

Didn’t super Metroid come out like 30 years ago? If anything it’s a testament of how good Super Metroid is if it’s being compared to a modern game.

Super metroid is not likely to ever be topped, too much went right for it. That doesn't make dread a bad game.

Personal opinion also matters even where objectivity should apply. Zero mission is my favorite simply because it isn't saddled down with back story.

IMO yes and no. But more on the no side.. it missed something atmosphere and exploration. And i also didn't think the soundtrack was memorable in Dread.

This is the problem with hardcore nostalgia in a nut shell. People continue to hamstring classics vs modern titles handicapping the new games with their childhood bliss.

At some point the sequels have to be better then the prior. Otherwise what kind of experience have you been supporting for 30 years?

I really like Zero Mission and Super Metroid. I think the structure of Fusion is really jarring, I realise it was a deliberate choice but it did not click with me. Dread is decent, it does some things well, like the controls which are spot on. But it loses a lot with sterile and uninspired environments, there is no excuse for that considering the technical advantages. Tone and atmosphere is so important to the series.

It’s hard to compare games so far apart directly . The first Metroid and Super Metroid are two of the best games with atmosphere of feeling alone with great music that just adds to it . Dread is a good game but those 2 games haven’t been topped imo . Controls are better though but that should be a given.

I think it is. Dread requires some technique and skill to solve some of the puzzles. Dread also has better controls (although clumsy at times). Honestly you can't go wrong either way.
