Metroid Dread Review - IGN

A surprise sequel after nearly 20 years, Metroid Dread brings back the legendary exploration and progression and merges it with excellent modern combat and some of the best boss fights ever.

Vegamyster952d ago

Happy the game finally came to light after so many years, I can’t wait to jump in.

NecrumOddBoy952d ago

Reviews look promising. Definitely glad to hear this is a great game. My concerns are highly reduced.

solideagle952d ago

what did you expect? Nintendo = Quality

Tacoboto952d ago

Half a day ago you were saying this game is "looking mediocre as hell".

That's not being "concerned", that's trying to crap on something before it even releases despite universal praise from previews. All that's changed in 12 hours is those praising it in previews can finally attach a score to it now.

TheDoomedGuy952d ago

Be honest. You just thought it look mediocre because of the graphics.

whitbyfox952d ago

Another jewel in the crown for the Switch. Nintendo are just making it unfair on Sony and Microsoft now.

QUIMICOMORTAL952d ago (Edited 952d ago )

:) LMAO why? cause it has a game that scored the same as dethloop and ratchet and clanck ? and because it will get the old KOTOR while ps5 will get the new one? :) :) :)

try again fanboy! but try harder!

whitbyfox952d ago

Maybe it’s because the Switch has 2 97-rated exclusives on Metacritic and the best the PS5 can do is a single 92.

Don’t cry Sonyboy.

Hikoran952d ago

I'm a PS5 player myself but you need to shut it mate, we all play games. I love that Nintendo get another one under their belt! I think the community is getting a little tired of Mario for a minute.

Nintentional951d ago (Edited 951d ago )

Go watch Dunkey play Death Loop. Game looks like trash lol

Seraphim951d ago

@ Hikoran - after the past year or so, yes, give the dam plumber a break. Nintendo has been working Mario to death the past year-ish. Give the man an infinite travel ticket to travel the world. Make sure to tell him to spend 15+ months doing so. Paper Mario, Mario 3D All Stars, Mario + Bowsers Fury, Mario Golf, Mario Party, etc. there is such a thing as too much of a good thing....

@whitbyfox - nice try there bud. Both the Switch & PS have their share of great games and I'll leave it at that.

I don't really care a whole lot about who sits where on Metacritic as a vast majority of websites & their writers can not objectively review any game. End of the day all I care about is what I thought about X game & whether or not it's worthy of a spot in my collection. Yes, I admit that seeing great reviews and high scores etc [as fans] is great but it's terribly subjective instead of objective. imo any professional gaming journalist/reviewer needs to be objective and rate according to the games own merits, strengths, weaknesses, etc. But that's an entirely different conversation and something that will likely never happen.

end of the day, yeah, I'm just excited to start playing Dread come Friday. Just hope I don't wrap up Ys VIII tonight which would likely force me to start something else tomorrow lol. And I tend to only play one game at a time to prevent backlog issues and incompleted games.

-Hermit-952d ago

Take the name Metroid out of the title, and I guarantee they wouldn't score it as high.

pramath777952d ago

I’m sure you’ll say the same thing for Ragnarok when it scores high

TheDoomedGuy952d ago

That's silly. All Metroid games are great...except for maybe other m

MadLad952d ago

There's literally nothing to base that off of.

With that logic, any new IP automatically gets a couple points taken off. There have been Metroid games with fairly negative reviews.

Calm down.

952d ago
-Hermit-952d ago (Edited 952d ago )

@pramath777

Couldn't give a damn about God of War either, I have never liked the series.

@TheRealTedCruz

"Calm down"

I am calm, I really don't care that much, I'm not the one that takes reviewers opinions seriously. I know they are clouded by their own biases.

@Zacfolder

I don't hate Nintendo, I just think that everything they do is massively overrated.

By the way, I didn't even say the game is bad, it could well be a 9/10, but let's not pretend that an indie game released on something like Steam that is just as good would rate just as high.

NotoriousWhiz951d ago (Edited 951d ago )

Yeah, that indie game called Dead Cells did review terribly. Only got a 9.5. If it had Metroid in the name, it would've been at least 9/10.... Oh wait....

I have a switch and will enjoy the hell out of this game. That said, grow up!

CrimsonWing69951d ago

Are you trolling? I really can’t tell, which is concerning.

UltimateOwnage951d ago

It looks like it for sure. If one can disregard 1080P, or 720P resolution as a factor, the sheer lineup of new high quality 1st and 3rd party games, the wealth of excellent remasters, along with a bursting range of great content on eShop is really makes the Switch an outstanding platform.

I’ve always been a PC and multi-console gamer, but Switch has become one of my favorite platforms of all time. I haven’t had this many games for one platform that I feel are gems since the SNES and PS1 eras.

darkrider951d ago

Unfair? I think a game like this could run on the Dreamcast without any problems. It's funny that in Nintendo reviews they forget the generic and done before, in this case for generations, excuse to drop points.

Sirk7x951d ago (Edited 951d ago )

No way. The animations and attention to detail in this game are top notch. I can guarantee Digital Foundry are going to have a field day with this one. This is classic game design at its damn near best. I think I'm almost at the end, and it's one of the best games I've played all year easily.

thesoftware730951d ago (Edited 951d ago )

Dark,

Yeah, you are way off base on this one. What most Nintendo games offer is masterclass, gameplay, controls, level design, music and most importantly is... pure fun.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but you're silly attacks are definitely in the minority. I am grateful that you have nothing to do with making, designing or producing games for Nintendo or any other company than I am aware of.

There is a reason why Nintendo is still in the business, and It's not off of pure nostalgia like I have seen some people claim. The games speak for themselves as they are just plain old fun.

RickRoland951d ago

But the switch has been out for nearly 5 years…. I’m pretty sure the PS5 library year one beat Switch year 1…

Astro’s Playroom
Demon’s Souls
Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Sackboy: A Big Adventure
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Returnal
Deathloop
Kena: Bridge of Spirits

Switch Year 1:

Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Super Mario Odyssee
Splatoon 2
Super Bomberman R

=\

whitbyfox951d ago

You missed out:

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Zelda Breath of the Wild
Bayonetta 2

All of which are rated higher on metacritic than every one of those games you listed except Demon’s Souls, which shares a 92 with Kart and Bayo 2.

pramath777951d ago

Lol you’re not even trying to keep up appearances with how transparently fanboyish and cherry-picked this list is are you?

Like, fuck, I don’t think I could have made a more blatantly fanboyish post if I’d tried.

thesoftware730951d ago (Edited 951d ago )

HAHAHA, Rick, you left off the biggest game, Zelda:BotW!

Wow that was a hard fail, the' Full' list is definitely debatable, but I give the nod to the Switch first year, I still play MK 8, Played Zelda to 100%, Ended up playing Bayo 1& 2 as they came together, Mario Galaxy was pure genius!

Terry_B951d ago

Its just another Metroidvania. There are like 20+ of them Playstation or Xbox and probably 50+ great ones on Steam.

lellkay951d ago (Edited 951d ago )

"unfair on sony"
People on this site, honestly lol

Either way, game looks fun, but artistically and graphically looks very below par IMO, I definitely expect better from this sort of game, especially at full price, but I like a Metroidvania so I'll no doubt enjoy it. Will probably wait for a price drop though.

Waiting for this and my OLED Switch preoder from GameStop 👍Now to trade my old Switch in.

Yui_Suzumiya951d ago

Man I'm hoping they have some decent stock in December. I'll have some extra income then and want to trade in my Switch Lite towards one.

XxINFERNUSxX951d ago

I hope so to, but the demand for this might be pretty high even though it's not a major hardware change. ☹

Yui_Suzumiya951d ago

You could have saved a bunch if you trade in your old Switch towards the OLED Switch at Gamestop. The Switch Lite alone takes $120 off. I think the original Switch takes $150 to $200 off.

XxINFERNUSxX951d ago

That I could have, but I jumped at the chance as soon as I saw it available on GameStop online and just preordered it. I would have liked to walk into GameStop and trade my old Switch towards the new one but, it would be sold out as it still is now. :(

Metroid Dread Has Sold Over 3 Million Copies, Reveals Developer

Enric Álvarez, the CEO of Metroid Dread developer MercurySteam, has revealed that the title has now sold over three million copies worldwide.

jaymacx289d ago

It’s good to see Metroid do well. Hopefully we hear something soon about Metroid Prime 4

Hereandthere289d ago (Edited 289d ago )

Wait up, 3 million worldwide out of a possible 120 million is considered good for a legendary franchise like metroid?

JEECE289d ago

Metroid has never sold super well. Lots of people under under the mistaken impression that, because franchises like Mario Kart, Smash Bros., 3D Mario games, more recent Zelda games, and Animal Crossing sell huge numbers, that all Nintendo franchises sell at that level, and that they always have.

This is pretty good for a Metroid. Dread will probably end up being the best-selling game in the franchise, if it isn't already.

Sciurus_vulgaris288d ago (Edited 288d ago )

Metroid Prime was said to have sold 2.8 million copies, so Dread is likely the best selling game in the series.

Rebel_Scum288d ago

Not everyone is a metroid freak ho ho ho

MetroidFREAK21288d ago

@Rebel_scum *squidward laugh*

ZeekQuattro289d ago

It took some doing but I'm glad it finally made it past that milestone.
