Standalone Blu-ray player sales triple Black Friday week

NPD reports :-

"Consumers paid more than $30 million for 147,000 Blu-ray players during a week in which the average price was slightly more than $200, down from about $240 the previous week, DisplaySearch said. About one in four video-disc players purchased for the week ended Nov. 29 were Blu-ray machines. Sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 videogame console, which includes a Blu-ray player, weren't included in the DisplaySearch figures.

Sony and Samsung, selling their cheapest Blu-ray players for $179 and $199, respectively, accounted for 85% of Black Friday week sales and helped unit sales also triple from the week ended Nov. 22. "

3 choices.

1)Advertise PS3 as a blu-ray player.

B)Advertise PS3 as a games machine.

III)Advertise PS3 as both.

And the winner is, Just advertise the bloody thing all over the place.

My only player is the ps3 and I am looking for a cheap upscaling player for my tv. Reason is I can't have the ps3 in the front room. I like to game on it aside from watching movies so it needs to go back out to my gaming tv.

I am looking for a good upscaling players that isnt to expensive. I have even considered an hddvd player as they are really cheap on amazon and I can get hd movies cheaply. I do like blu but I need something dedicated to playing dvd's (maybe hddvd too) upscaled for the front room.

Any suggestions? Philips has a nice DVP5960 that can read divx files (from 3.11 up) for around $50.

A lot of hdtvs upscale themselves with a regular dvd player, you may be wasting your money buying an upscaler.

Would like to know the sales of HDTV's during the course of that time. The sales of HDTV's will set the curve for Blu-Ray since HD is not the widely used format right now still.

After all, what good is something as good as Blu-Ray when you don't have anything worth playing it on?

problems are. most people arent up to date on tech like say the people that frequent this gaming forum, so they dont have a clue as to what hdtv or high def is. I know some people that bought hdtvs only to take them back because of the lousy picture quality. When i told them that they had to get a hd signal either by hd cable or hd blu player they were confused. I even have a brother in law that wanted to borrow my "pirates of the caribean" blu ray box set to use with a regular dvd player on a reguler tv, he thought i was lying and that i didnt want him to use it. i had to play it to show him that i doesnt work that way.

thats good to hear. most people who have HDTVs will need bluray players.
(or else the Tv would sorta go to waste...)
