The Medium Lacks Ray-Tracing on PS5, But is Perhaps Better For It

After being an Xbox console exclusive for just over eight months, The Medium is now available on PS5. Has it been worth the wait?

Its gamespew always slandering something

gamer78041008d ago

Right ps5 stutters and fails to keep 30fps in cutscenes which are many in this game…. I don’t see how that is better.

GhostofHorizon1008d ago

From the reports I heard, it sounds like the game has trouble running 30 FPS on any version.

Perhaps you should be demanding more from the developer as opposed to whatever you're trying to do here.

darthv721007d ago

^^no trouble on my series s.

ElvisHuxley1007d ago

@darth Again, seems like a failure on the part of the developer....I know you wanna cheer for your guys, but if the problem is as described, the blame seems obvious.

darthv721007d ago

^^not cheering anything. Just saying that I havent had any issues with stuttering or frame pacing on my series s. If the problem is as described then it isnt across the board as implied. Or i have not yet reached the part where its supposed to be an issue. your mileage may vary.

gamer78041007d ago (Edited 1007d ago )

@nakiro, Runs fine on series x. I finished the game.

RangerWalk2671007d ago

Runs smooth on my Series X. I was just talking to my brother about this. He asked if I had the same issues he was having on his PS5. I told him that things like this will only get worse. Well, unless Sony drops a PS5 Pro real quick.

ABizzel11007d ago

Then you just lied to your brother because frame pacing has everything to do with the developer / engine and nothing to do with the hardware.

You cannot sit there and say things will get worse for the PS5 with the Series S sitting right there and you have no comprehension or f hardware.

Snookies121007d ago (Edited 1007d ago )

@RangerWalk267 - You can't be serious. You actually believe the PS5 can't handle this game? Lol, my guy... Please know what you're trying to talk about before saying anything. This is 100% an issue on the developer's end for not optimizing it properly. Plain and simple. Anyone with any sort of coding knowledge understands the importance of optimization when it comes to porting to other hardware.

It has been seemingly running fine on my Series S, but it's unacceptable for it to have drops like that on PS5.

kayoss1007d ago (Edited 1007d ago )

@rangewalker
You must be F'n kidding me right? Do you have any filter that spew from that mouth of yours? Youre telling me the PS5 can run game like ratchet and clank, FFVII, Ghost, Returnal, etc with no issues. But it cant run The Medium?

If its hardware like you said, then how is it possible that Ratchet and Clank runs smoothly on the PS5 but the Medium cant? In this case, there is only one difference, its the developers.

I know you and Darthe are xbox super fans but c'mon man, use some common sense.

Lol 7 months later and it run terrible compare to the xbxsx and even the ss and it take 20sec on ps5 to load vs 8sec on Xsx 😄 no ray tracying n ambient light and frame rate is terrible on ps5.

Told people when they were s1hting on xb, just wait til the medium comes to ps5 lol.

But hey it have hepatic feedback 😀

Rimeskeem1008d ago

I just had an aneurysm trying to read this comment. Save your energy folks it isn't worth it.

lipton1011008d ago

Kind of sad. Seems like a guy with a lot of anger over life channeling it into hate for one faceless corporation over another

CaptainHenry9161008d ago (Edited 1008d ago )

I couldn't even comprehend this 😂 but I will say the Medium wasn't all that great to begin with. Just a mediocre title from a mediocre developer

MadLad1008d ago

I don't know.

Observer and Layers of Fear were good experiences. Blair Witch was pretty solid too. Even the medium was decent, if flawed.

People give these guys far too much flack, and it seemed to really start after the Medium's timed exclusivity.

If they truly are working on Silent Hill, I'm just hoping they're handed a good development budget. The series could be in much worse hands.

CaptainHenry9161008d ago

@TheRealTedCruz

They're still a AA and mediocre developer to me. Most of their games don't even have combat it's more of walking simulators with very easy puzzles

MadLad1008d ago (Edited 1008d ago )

You can consider them a mediocre developer. Nobody said you had to like them.
But there's talent had in that company, and it has shown through multiple projects.

And it's disingenuous to call something a walking simulator when there's player agency to be had.

And there's nothing wrong with being a mid-tier developer. They're the ones typically putting out the interesting content; whereas "AAA" is slowly killing the industry with greed, and monotonous game design.

S2Killinit1008d ago

Tell me, do you cry when PS5 games look better than xbox x games?

SeTTriP1008d ago

Which happens alot even when ps5 is in back compat mode.

You do know there’s an entire world to see and explore outside of those four walls, right? Video games should be a fun addition to life, not life itself.

carlosjrix1008d ago

Sony always wins on n4g. Lol

FPS_D3TH1008d ago

Lmao yeah just wait for the game nobody really cares to even play? Sure taught them

babadivad1008d ago

Game is boring AF anyway. Played halfway through on XSX and wasn't too enamored with it. Story is pretty cool I suppose but the gameplay was to slow and plodding for me.

gravedigger1008d ago (Edited 1008d ago )

Well, PS5 loads textures faster. But game IS technical mess on all platforms

Babadook71008d ago

PS5; better resolution, better frame rate.

XSX: raytracing.

If I had to choose either I'd go with the more stable frame rate

rakentaja1008d ago

Both games ran at 30 fps, but the PS5 version stutters from time to time, so it doesn't exactly run better.
PS5: better resolution but lacks ray tracing.

Babadook71007d ago (Edited 1007d ago )

This article says the opposite. PS5 = better frame rate.

"Despite these improvements, the framerate also seems to be more fluid on PS5, making The Medium‘s protagonist, Marianne, a little more responsive to your inputs. Movement is still clunky, but now a little less so. But like us, you’re probably wondering how these gains have been made, and the answer is simple: the PS5 version of The Medium doesn’t have ray tracing."

Kyizen1007d ago

Sounds like someone who hasn't tried haptic feedback

chiefJohn1171007d ago (Edited 1007d ago )

Lol stop rubbing it in. And hey! Heptic feedback is a game changer lmao.

senorfartcushion1008d ago

It’s not. Ray tracing is good and the games on ps5 are naturally better having it on. It just feels like there are too many writers trying to sell games via articles nowadays.

ElvisHuxley1007d ago

Not sure about this case, but often times, developers with little RT experience, and a wealth of knowledge with traditional lighting methods result in distinctions without a discernable difference. I expect this to change in the coming years, but the tech is still in its infancy, relatively speaking, and not cheap with regard to hardware overhead. When done well, it's amazing. It's not always done well though.

Deathdeliverer1008d ago

Man after watching a comparison video it is CLEAR this dev didn’t want to put ANY effort in the PS5 version. Luckily this isn’t a big miss if you pass the game up in my opinion. I didn’t like it on my Series X and I seriously don’t think the dual sense can change that. And even if it does, I can’t see how anyone could support this half baked effort for full price.

Chevalier1008d ago

That's disappointing. Was waiting to play this game, but, I won't support a bad port. Hopefully they patch it up. But guess I'll hold that money for my upcoming fall game purchases instead

The Medium TV Show Announced by Bloober Team

Bloober Team has announced that it will turning its psychological horror game The Medium into a TV show, though no details were provided.

I wonder if the TV will lean heavily on that same split-screen mechanic. Not sure if it would work, but it would definitely be interesting.

rlow1611d ago

I think that would be the main selling point. It would set the show apart from others in its category.

coolbeans611d ago

Given techniques like split diopter shots (seen a lot in De Palma films) or splicing different takes in editing, there's way to incorporate a similar split-screen effect.

Deathdeliverer611d ago

For the first time ever I feel like a tv show could be infinitely better than the game. Man that game was a dumpster fire of boredom.

Petebloodyonion611d ago

I do think there's nice untapped potential for a Tv show with a six-sense vibe.
Call me crazy but I'm one of the few who did enjoy the plot of the game and finished it.
Was it perfect hell no but nice and refreshing hell yeah.

coolbeans611d ago (Edited 611d ago )

-"Call me crazy but I'm one of the few who did enjoy the plot of the game and finished it."

Don't let the most vocal of this site fool you: you're in the majority for those who actually played it.

monkey602611d ago

If you guys enjoyed it, then good for you but Bloober has a history of writing trauma themes into their plot and handling it horribly. The Medium was particularly problematic. People aren't advocating against Bloober for no reason.

coolbeans611d ago (Edited 611d ago )

@monkey602

-"...Bloober has a history of writing trauma themes into their plot and handling it horribly."

As someone who's played almost all of their recent main games to some extent (Layers of Fear 2 excluded), they are inconsistent writers. Blair Witch had some rough execution for example.

-"The Medium was particularly problematic."

It has moments of shock value that harm the overall experience, but there's actually meaningful subtext buried here. Whenever I see the term "problematic" I reflexively wonder how much that accusation is fueled by reddit's subculture or whatever. By today's standard, Silent Hill 2 would get dinged for being problematic despite that... being the entire point. Bloober's applying a 'trauma begets trauma' motif through its world by incorporating the ravages done to Poland by Nazis and Communists. There are legit reasons why all of these pieces are in place and how they're explored is done in earnestness. I've seen some otherwise solid people, like Gene Park, critique it but I think he misunderstands some of its crucial context.

Not the best of last year, but it was well within its right for '21 writing nominations.

monkey602611d ago

I'm definitely not trying to be the voice of a new generation here. And I'm definitely not against using sensitive themes for setting and plot. But the conclusion Bloober came to with their themes in The Medium was incredibly jarring and poorly crafted.

I'm not going to deep dive into it, it is spoiler territory and I wouldn't want to ruin it for someone who would enjoy it.
But I played 2 games last year that absolutely botched what they set out to achieve in narrative. The Medium was one, The Suicide of Rachel Foster was the other.

coolbeans610d ago (Edited 610d ago )

-"But the conclusion Bloober came to with their themes in The Medium was incredibly jarring and poorly crafted."

I guess there's just going to be a hard disagree between us then. It ranks up there with Observer as far as Bloober's storytelling goes and it gave me more optimism about their heavily rumored Silent Hill project/remake. I can understand not wanting to get into details here, but I'm down for an extended convo via PM. It just might take a while for me to respond.

-"But I played 2 games last year that absolutely botched what they set out to achieve in narrative. The Medium was one, The Suicide of Rachel Foster was the other."

It's weird b/c I'm with you on Rachel Foster and its "Legal Lolita" angle too. I'd almost argue there's a yin/yang disparity between them with regards to handling their themes. *MAYBE* not black and white difference per se - Medium has some issues, but something closer to a black and... beige.

Hmm. That actually makes a lot of sense. I could see the dual reality split screen being used in some scenes. That would provide some pretty incredible visuals that we don't normally get in films or tv shows.
