The Medium on PS5 Is the Definitive Version of the Game Thanks to DualSense

If you've held off on The Medium and have access to a PS5, it's well worth checking out.

piroh1009d ago (Edited 1009d ago )

DualSense is such a killer deal. I played Back 4 blood beta version and tried every weapon in the game and every weapon had its own feeling, Dirt 5 PS5 version feels so much more intensive on the road. Hope The Medium will be fun with DS support. Great idea from Sony to implement it, Mark Cerny knows best

VoiceMale1009d ago

I was with you all the way up to the point of " MARK CERNY KNOWS BEST" despite my love for game u will not hear me say things like that..you sound like a cult member

Orbilator1009d ago

Hmmm your comment shows your lack of understanding, Mark Cerny is a well renowned and respected console developer amonst many other things so I think piroh was right when he said Mark Cerny knows best. He's proven it time and time again.

Lionsguard1009d ago

How dare you speak ill of Lord Cerny! may Knack feast upon the bones of your forebears!

thorstein1009d ago

Are you talkin' bout Bugsnax?

neutralgamer19921009d ago (Edited 1009d ago )

VoiceMale

Sure Cerny knows nothing and it's not like when he took over as the lead after PS4 that PlayStation brand has become its strongest ever. Please do tell what's not to like since he has led PlayStation in hardware? If knack is his biggest failure than you don't know who Cerny is. Look up his history and how many IP's were developed under him

Unlike Phil he knows what he is talking about and doesn't give off the shelf spec sheet numbers that someone handed him 15 minutes before the conference

On topic

This is so bogus so now when a game is timed exclusive to Xbox and it comes to playstation than playstation will be called the Definitive version and vice versa. Devs have to do and say what can help them sell their games once their exclusive deal ends

UltraNova1008d ago

Even with DS support, I'm still not that interested in this game. Maybe I'll give it a try when it hits a deep sale.

Yep, the DS is very good selling an old game and PR hahaha!

ElvisHuxley1009d ago (Edited 1009d ago )

Have you tried it? It really is a game changer. I thought it was going to be something of a gimmick, and then I tried it.

GhostofHorizon1009d ago

I know right, I don't play any game that is older than 2 weeks, that's my cut off time. Anything older is dead to me. Only fanboys and losers play games older than a week old.

CaptainHenry9161009d ago (Edited 1009d ago )

I'm starting to use the dualsense controller as my primary on PC and on Steam. The features are like icing on the cake. Sony made a wonderful controller. But I'm going to be honest the Medium is mediocre at best

gamer78041009d ago (Edited 1009d ago )

I would disagree, the ps5 version doesn't have raytracing and stutters during cutscenes which there are alot of. There are some neat raytracing effects with the mirrors in this game. Hopefully they'll patch that in on the ps5 or at least add an option.

BioShockGX1008d ago

Funny I disabled the triggers in both back 4 blood and dirt 5. It hurt my hands after a while.

I want the game for the story, environments/atmosphere, and her ability to switch between worlds. I think all of that seems super interesting. It's everything else like the gameplay is where the game falls apart from what I heard. I might get the game eventually when it's on sale.

Livingthedream1009d ago

Great game, very enjoyable experienice.

Sayai jin1009d ago

Its ok. I already played it, so I will pass on it, even with dual sense support. There have been a few games I have replayed, because of added dual sense support. This game won't be one of them. If you haven't played it yet, it is wprth the play, but I would wait for it to go on sale.

Concertoine1009d ago

Its definitely Bloopers best game. The soundtrack adds a lot, and it has enough atmosphere to prop up its underwhelming gameplay. Feels like a ps2 game, in a good way.

Petebloodyonion1009d ago

It's a great game if you set your expectation that it's not a AAA quality game.
But as a game on the quality level of Observer, Layers of Fear, Gone home, etc. It's really a quality product.
The best way to describe it would be a game made for Ps2 with today's tech.
The story is quite interesting and the way the story is set reminds me of Hotel Dusk Room 215 or Killer 7 due to how you pick several story pieces along the way that doesn't make any sense until the end.
My only gripes are the tank controls.

Kosic1008d ago

Sadly the game is pretty forgettable, the first major area you get to explore has some really cool enviroments that I remember well. But the dark world and light world is very much Silent Hill. The splitscreen feature is a gimmick at best, you are only looking at one location at a time and it's not often you need to glance over to the other screen (no need to interact outside of the dark world / light world at the same time).
They take a mechanic and repeat is more often than it's needed, that it's a little rinse and repeat in a new area.

My partner found the game very interesting and then the ending let it down. I found it an average game at best. I played it on Gamepass, I doubt I would've spent much money on it tbh.

I cannot really think how much the DS feature would make it better, I'm believing it's being over hyped for this title.

traumadisaster1009d ago

I’d like this to be nice, hopefully I give it a shot later. But my first experience was bad, I think it was the tutorial game for ps5 or something and I tried to shoot and it was hard and I thought stuck. I thought I broke the controller until I paid attention to the on screen instructions to pull hard.

So I did and I was like, oh no, I can’t have that sht in the middle of a fight. I like the the tech and idea and I’ll try it again, but I turned that shit off as fast as possible.

willykyu1009d ago

Are you talking about astrobot ? You should give it a try again for sure. Of course, it depends how the developer uses that feature cleverly. But Once all these haptic and trigger feedbacks are on, hard not to miss them when not implemented in other games. Shooting with different weapons in Ratchet is amazing. About that same feeling we used to have with arcade shooting games !

S2Killinit1009d ago

That story was so fake I dont think youve touched the thing yet. At least research the name of the game you supposedly played. Its Astrobot btw.

I wonder how exactely you turned it off in Astrobot.

boing11009d ago (Edited 1009d ago )

Would you say the experience was...traumatic and a disaster? Yeeeeeaaaaahhhhhh!! 😎

Can't wait for this game to be on Plus.

SullysCigar1009d ago

Yeah, next month I'm guessing. Until then I'll just watch paint dry if I feel like being bored to tears.

ECHOINFINITY1009d ago

Dualsense + headphones with 3d audio is such a game changer. Returnal is an amazing display of how much these features add to the experience.

Sayai jin1009d ago

Dual sense is superb. 3D audio has been around a while already. Dual sense has made me want to replay gamed where it was added to it later.

Chevalier1009d ago

Yeah Returnal is amazing. Started Aliens Fireteam recently and controller felt lacking without the Dual Sense haptics

Bloober Team has announced that it will turning its psychological horror game The Medium into a TV show, though no details were provided.

I wonder if the TV will lean heavily on that same split-screen mechanic. Not sure if it would work, but it would definitely be interesting.

rlow1611d ago

I think that would be the main selling point. It would set the show apart from others in its category.

coolbeans611d ago

Given techniques like split diopter shots (seen a lot in De Palma films) or splicing different takes in editing, there's way to incorporate a similar split-screen effect.

Deathdeliverer611d ago

For the first time ever I feel like a tv show could be infinitely better than the game. Man that game was a dumpster fire of boredom.

Petebloodyonion611d ago

I do think there's nice untapped potential for a Tv show with a six-sense vibe.
Call me crazy but I'm one of the few who did enjoy the plot of the game and finished it.
Was it perfect hell no but nice and refreshing hell yeah.

coolbeans611d ago (Edited 611d ago )

-"Call me crazy but I'm one of the few who did enjoy the plot of the game and finished it."

Don't let the most vocal of this site fool you: you're in the majority for those who actually played it.

monkey602611d ago

If you guys enjoyed it, then good for you but Bloober has a history of writing trauma themes into their plot and handling it horribly. The Medium was particularly problematic. People aren't advocating against Bloober for no reason.

coolbeans611d ago (Edited 611d ago )

@monkey602

-"...Bloober has a history of writing trauma themes into their plot and handling it horribly."

As someone who's played almost all of their recent main games to some extent (Layers of Fear 2 excluded), they are inconsistent writers. Blair Witch had some rough execution for example.

-"The Medium was particularly problematic."

It has moments of shock value that harm the overall experience, but there's actually meaningful subtext buried here. Whenever I see the term "problematic" I reflexively wonder how much that accusation is fueled by reddit's subculture or whatever. By today's standard, Silent Hill 2 would get dinged for being problematic despite that... being the entire point. Bloober's applying a 'trauma begets trauma' motif through its world by incorporating the ravages done to Poland by Nazis and Communists. There are legit reasons why all of these pieces are in place and how they're explored is done in earnestness. I've seen some otherwise solid people, like Gene Park, critique it but I think he misunderstands some of its crucial context.

Not the best of last year, but it was well within its right for '21 writing nominations.

monkey602611d ago

I'm definitely not trying to be the voice of a new generation here. And I'm definitely not against using sensitive themes for setting and plot. But the conclusion Bloober came to with their themes in The Medium was incredibly jarring and poorly crafted.

I'm not going to deep dive into it, it is spoiler territory and I wouldn't want to ruin it for someone who would enjoy it.
But I played 2 games last year that absolutely botched what they set out to achieve in narrative. The Medium was one, The Suicide of Rachel Foster was the other.

coolbeans611d ago (Edited 611d ago )

-"But the conclusion Bloober came to with their themes in The Medium was incredibly jarring and poorly crafted."

I guess there's just going to be a hard disagree between us then. It ranks up there with Observer as far as Bloober's storytelling goes and it gave me more optimism about their heavily rumored Silent Hill project/remake. I can understand not wanting to get into details here, but I'm down for an extended convo via PM. It just might take a while for me to respond.

-"But I played 2 games last year that absolutely botched what they set out to achieve in narrative. The Medium was one, The Suicide of Rachel Foster was the other."

It's weird b/c I'm with you on Rachel Foster and its "Legal Lolita" angle too. I'd almost argue there's a yin/yang disparity between them with regards to handling their themes. *MAYBE* not black and white difference per se - Medium has some issues, but something closer to a black and... beige.

porkChop611d ago

Hmm. That actually makes a lot of sense. I could see the dual reality split screen being used in some scenes. That would provide some pretty incredible visuals that we don't normally get in films or tv shows.
