Why Kingdom Hearts 4 Should Be More Like KH2 Than KH3

After the mixed reactions to Kingdom Hearts 3, Square Enix should look back at the successes of KH2 when developing Kingdom Hearts 4.

People can deny it all they want but 3 was a massive disappointment. 2 still has a much better combat aside from not being able to move around while casting and while the story may have been the beginning of the end for the series, it's still much better paced out than 3. 2 is everything 3 should've been but more improved.

Chance451062d ago (Edited 1062d ago )

Versions 1.07 and 1.05 mostly fixed it by basically reverting Sora back to KH2FM Sora and introducing Critical Converter to get rid of Attractions and promote Form Changes, and the Limit Cut bosses are designed to be fought using the updated Sora. Form Changes with keyblade switching are part of the depth of those fights because Base Sora and Transformed Sora can be useful for different situations.

Also, KH3 introduced air blocking, and during the Limit Cut bosses sometimes it's better to be in midair and sometimes it's better to be on the ground when you block, depending on what the punish opportunities are.

People can't handle the truth I guess going by the disagrees

Hell even the theme song was a disappointment, the Skrillex shit in it was too much, ruined the song, although the ending theme was decent.

@Chance45

None of that fixes the story, pacing and other things.

@Inverno
You have to beat the game to unlock the 1.07 abilities that fix the combos, unfortunately.
One of the fixes that you don't have to unlock is that you can cancel most attacks by rolling/air dodging.
Also, what's up with the reply system on this site?

I actually couldn't agree more, 3 had quite a bit wrong with it that just turned it into an boring experience, quite a few of my friends had this issue playing KH3 for the first time. Then some of my other friends who initially enjoyed it, disliked it during their second playthrough. I really can't see how anyone can defend this game when the first KH games blow it out of the water when it comes to gameplay and story.

Chance451061d ago

The story is bad, and the gameplay was bad at launch and during the first half of the DLC (you pick Kairi and Sora has basically no AI and can't dodge Xehanort's meteor attack), but the Limit Cut fights are great.

Chance451061d ago

@-Foxtrot
The story is still bad, but most of what Inverno said was about the combat, which is what I was replying to.

Inverno1061d ago

I thought I'd reinstall it last night and try giving it another go, and I still can't find any enjoyment in the combat. I was playing KH 2 before it, and theres still some stuff off about it that make it annoying for me at least. I can't stand how slow he feels when performing air combos. There's an extra hit or two that I can't seem to be able to toggle off in the abilities menu like how I can in KH2, he starts off with a long air combo. The long animations for keyblade transformation finishers are also still a problem. You have no way of canceling them and you're left wide open for attacks from behind which is how I continue to die. The reason why Nobodies worked so well was because of the reactions like reversal and warp snipe which aren't in this game. The shadow twister boss in twilight town is still the most annoying fight ever with it going off half way across the map and going in through buildings with warping still being turned off for boss fights for some reason. Flowmotion is still much worse than what it was in DDD missing most of the times. Yes I'm playing it in critical, and doing a level 1 playthrough in 2 when I went back to 3 to do the same.

I guess I'll hafto turn on dodging since I wanted to keep it off. The rest of those abilities Ive kept off as I don't like the extra time they take to play out. This sites reply system is pretty bad, but there is a dm tho I feel most find it awkward to directly message people they don't know

I wish I could get into this series. I tried like hell with KH3, but my god, the dialogue had me rolling my eyes so hard into the back of my skull. The gameplay just feels too simplified, and the level design is kind of uninspiring. That’s just how I feel, I’m jealous of people who can see past all that because I think the darker stuff in the story is interesting but I just can’t stand playing it.

godofiron1063d ago (Edited 1063d ago )

if you're starting with kingdom hearts 3, that might be 96% of the problem.

Start with the first game, because the gameplay holds up pretty well, even if a little dated. If you aren't enjoying yourself by the time you leave the starting world then yeah, the series might not be for you - and that's totally fine, too.

you could just also check out youtube video playthroughs, if you don't want to deal with all the games!

CrimsonWing691062d ago

Oh no, man I started with Kingdom Hearts 1 on the PS2. It was cool, but then Kingdom Hearts 2 came out eventually and I just couldn’t get into it. Didn’t play any of the others until 3 and I really tried hard to stick with it, but it just didn’t click with me.

Chance451062d ago

1. Simplified doesn't always mean not deep. It's the whole depth vs. complexity subject.
2. KH2 and KH3 are peculiar in that they started as too easy/not demanding on strategy during the main game, but later got updates (Final Mix for 2 and Re:Mind/Limit Cut for 3) that introduced bonus boss fights that really test your understanding of the ins and outs of the combat and resource management. Those bosses are designed so that if you button mash without thinking, you lose (no matter what level your Sora is). They do things like bait and punish poorly timed attacks, blocks, and dodges. I recommend seeing YouTube videos on those fights that explain the decisions that the players make to succeed.

gold_drake1062d ago

i absolutely agree with the dialogue. its super cringe most of the time. the major issue is that they cant really do anything else cause of Disney.anything remotely. mature is a big no no for them

-Foxtrot1062d ago

You know what's funny, the dialogue has always been a little cheesy but Kingdom Hearts 3 REALLY ramped it up

I never was bothered about it in the first two, even replying it with the remasters recently.

CrimsonWing691062d ago

Yea, I think you’re right. Like the first one it never was an issue really, but 3 it’s all like, “We can do anything through the power of friendship!!!” And I’m just sitting there slowly dropping my face to my palm.

The series needs to take a longer break

FinalFantasyFanatic1062d ago

I actually think that was part of the problem, too big of a break between KH2 and KH3, should have just push KH3 out asap after 2 was released, doesn't help that SE struggles nowadays to make good entries for some of their top franchises (KH and FF).

MeteorPanda1063d ago

like square has any say in kingdom hearts, they have withdrawn their characters and it's basically all disney

gold_drake1062d ago

exactly this.
ppl need to realise that kh are disney games made by Square.

FinalFantasyFanatic1062d ago

Idk, after seeing how FF7R played out story-wise, I think Square definitely had a big part in this, even if Disney was pulling the strings, it's definitely both at fault here.

enkiduxiv1062d ago

I don’t really see the need for this franchise at all now. When the idea was still kinda new it worked but I feel like they are just beating a dead horse. I guess as long as it makes them money though.

FinalFantasyFanatic1062d ago

I think it's all the game entries and how convoluted the story has gotten after all this time, especially when all of those "side games" are actually quite important to the plot.

Chance451061d ago

Some of the "side games" are side games, but Nomura straight up said BBS and DDD are main games and many people didn't listen.

Final Fantasy XVI Has Finally Given Donald Duck A Worthy Opponent

For a long time, it's been widely accepted amongst Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts fans that Donald Duck is the most powerful mage ever to exist, mainly due to his use of the stupidly powerful Zettaflare spell towards the end of Kingdom Hearts 3. This spell is one step up from Teraflare, a spell which was used in Final Fantasy XIV that was so powerful that it completely wiped out the base game, giving the developers a canonical reason to let them bin everything and start again from scratch.

Now you're armed with this information, you can see how it was pretty surprising for Donald Duck of all characters to bust out Zettaflare and establish himself as the most powerful character in Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts lore. However, now that Final Fantasy XVI has arrived and delivered a whole new cast of characters, a new challenger has arrived to provide Donald with some much needed competition.

Final Fantasy's Strongest Canonical Magic User Is... Donald Duck?

Final Fantasy features many strong characters, but an unlikely character from Kingdom Hearts is able to cast the most powerful spell ever seen

gold_drake364d ago

that was pretty amazing, not gonna lie, i might have shed a tear or too, just cause of pure awesomeness.

he was already my favourite disney character and one of my favs from KH and then to see that amazing spell too. aah so good xD

FGHFGHFGH364d ago

Final Fantasy's strongest magic user is Donald Duck, who never appears in a final fantasy game.

This Kingdom Hearts Boss' Unpredictability Gave Me Sekiro Vibes

Kingdom Hearts is filled with otherworldly boss battles, but only one stands out like a phoenix dancing with ethereal grace across the night sky. Before we embark upon a discussion concerning Kingdom Hearts' exceptional boss battles, it may be prudent to first reflect on the evolution of the criteria for appraising video game bosses. This criterion has undergone a major metamorphosis over the past decade; one that owes much to the profound influence of From Software and its iconic Souls series.

"Yozora is much more than a grueling secret encounter; he is a reflection of what Kingdom Hearts' bosses should be"

No thank you. If every boss in Kingdom Hearts was like Yozora, the series would be unplayable. That's not to say that they shouldn't include such challenges, but making them fundamental to the game would be too much. And don't say that this is what the From Software games are, because Yozora is absolutely harder than most of the bosses in those games. He is waaay faster, has a ludicrous number of abilities (and does them in random order AND can chain most of them together), and punishes you severely if you make a mistake. On top of that, you have to survive this onslaught for a really long time because of how much health he has. It's borderline too much - for me at least. Still, it's a stunning battle.

OMNlPOTENT376d ago

I agree, while I do really enjoy the Yozora fight, I think it's far too difficult to be anything more than an optional boss. However, I do believe that there should be more bosses that are in the same weight and size class as Sora, as the majority of those in KH3 were the best fights. The giant heartless bosses just aren't as enjoyable.
