Persona 4 Review (GameCyte)

GameCyte's Brendon Lindsey writes:

It's ironic that in a day and age where Square Enix is trying their hardest to make RPGs appeal to Western gamers, it's a completely and unapologetically Japanese RPG that ends up being the best (and most memorable) RPG in years. Persona 4 not only lives up to the expectations surrounding it, but surpasses them so handily that even I, a huge fan of the last game, was surprised.

Not quite a five-star masterpiece, but it comes as close as you can get for something only genre fans will appreciate.

Danja5638d ago

fair review...had this game pre-ordered for months now....3 more days....

ahnonamis5638d ago

I agree. I really do think the only drawback the last two Persona games have is how much of a time investment they require. They're masterpieces and everyone who likes RPGs SHOULD play them, but it's also incredibly hard to find time to devote to them when you work 40+ hours a week and have a family.

I'm still going to try each and every time a new SMT game comes out, though! :)

Danja5638d ago

I agree I haven't even finished P3:FES yet...and P4 is already here :(

callahan095638d ago

It's not ironic at all that the best RPGs of the year are the ones that wear their Japanese nature on their sleeve and don't try too hard to be American. People forget that the RPG lovers of the world loved them for what they were, and they were Japanese. RPGs largely helped spark the incredible Japanese obsession held by many Westerners, especially in America. We don't want our JRPG's to be Americanized, because that's a complete stray from the things that made us fall in love with the genre to begin with.

I been play testing SMT Imagine beta and it makes me want to go play Persona, Nocturne and other SMT games(when there are server issues). They always looked interesting but I never had the time to squeeze them in since I had/have so much on the back burner. Eventually I will expand my collection to contain the SMT essentials.

Yeah I am in the beta as well.I don't really like it but its a good experience

The Nintendo Switch Doesn't Need Persona

The Switch would definitely benefit from Persona games, but at the end of the day, it doesn't need them for fans to scratch the itch.

Nobody asked but nice of you to write an article trying to convince yourself of that.

At the end of the day Atlus/Sega can put Persona on whatever platform they want. Their business and their choice.

Neonridr962d ago (Edited 962d ago )

I mean techincally there are Persona games on Switch. Just not the core series. That being said, sales would definitely benefit from the Japanese market Switch owners if they ever decided to put them on there.

They’re right it needs another Earthbound.

I'm betting on nothing.
It's Atlus after all.

VenomUK986d ago (Edited 986d ago )

Surely a Persona 4 Golden is on the cards? I played about 5 hours worth years ago on the Vita. Would love to play it on a present-day console.

gold_drake985d ago

so you played the beginning? haha.
its on pc if thats any comfort.

VenomUK985d ago

@curtain_swoosh. Yeah, I wouldn't mind the PC version but I have a crappy old Mac (better not say that too loud as I don't want it to hear me) so it can't run Parallels PC software. I'm sure a home version will come, someday.

Vits985d ago

I mean it's Atlus.
One would think that Persona 4 Golden would have gotten a console version together with the PC one. And if not for all consoles at least a Switch release.

So, yeah. I'm betting on nothing.

Scissorman82986d ago

As excited as I am to see more Persona, I really want to know the status of Project Re Fantasy. It's been nearly five years since that game was announced and we know absolutely nothing about it outside of a teaser trailer.

VersusDMC985d ago

As it's a persona specific event i doubt it will show up. But maybe. Probably a Sony event ingame reveal seems more likely.

Persona 3 remake, Persona 6, Persona Arena ports or/and sequel are my wants.

FinalFantasyFanatic985d ago

Persona 6 and Persona 3 FES port to PC, I don't know what else to expect, I'd buy a port of P3 Fes to go with P4G.

FinalFantasyFanatic985d ago

WTF is with these downvotes? Did someone let the bots out again?

SaiyanFury985d ago

I'm hoping for P3 FES remaster maybe and with luck P5R on PC as well.

Request no. 12,364: bring Persona 4 Golden to current/next gen consoles please.

SegaGamer1362d ago

Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colours and Persona 5 are my top picks.

Olly_S1362d ago

Just give me Sonic 2 and a couch co-op option and I'm yours for life.

Teflon021362d ago

I'm pretty sure Sonic 2 allows 2 player on steam lol. Unless I misunderstood what you mean

gold_drake1362d ago

sonic 3 + knuckles co-op would be neat

Teflon021362d ago

Yes, definitely need to bring over Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colours.

P5 I definitely ain't complaining about either. I still haven't played through royal for backlog reasons. If I can get a PC version instead. I'm not complaining

Teflon021362d ago

I'm even surprised by how well it did. But I was one who bought on day one. Despite it coming out of no where. Loved the game on Vita. Hopefully they'll bring a version of Persona 3 that's a mix between combat from P3P, female and male protag, as well as the complete 3d game like FES etc. Basically the version where you get the best of everything, no compromise

GoodGuy091362d ago

Yes bring over all the persona titles. Keep em alive
