It doesn't surprise me that publishers like Sony release review embargoes closer and closer to release. Game journalist have a habit of virtue signalling and exacerbating extenuous issues in their game reviews. It's been going on for a long time, but I still remember the whole issue with Days Gone and just how many game jounalists took issue with the fact that the main protagonist was a white male - as if that had anything to do with the quality of the game; and completely ignoring to mention the same issues in all the other games that they subsequently reviewed that also featured a white male protagonist etc.

No doubt this time around there will be alot of reviewers who will weigh in on the price point of the game, as if it's the first game this gen to be £70 - never mind the fact that they get to play the game for free anyway. Objectivity used to be one of the core values of jounalism, but if Jason Schrier is to be believed, game journalists cannot be objective and it only gets in the way of good clickbait.

The ones that were saying it was generic, repetitive gave a low mark and now are saying how great the game is and it should have a second game.... But we know that gaming is like wine, it get better after years...

LucasRuinedChildhood1115d ago (Edited 1115d ago )

This comment is hilarious. You're getting offended about something that isn't happening.

Sony's review embargos always correlate with their confidence in a game - they commission mock reviews so they already roughly know the score. Jeff Ross (director of Days Gone) even said that the mock reviews were quite accurate for DG on a podcast with David Jaffe. Nothing has changed since Days Gone, so what you're saying isn't true.

Days Gone
Review Embargo: 25 April 2019
Release Date: 26 April 2019

Death Stranding
Review Embargo: 1 November 2019
Release Date: 8 November 2019

Ghost of Tsushima
Review Embargo: July 14 2020
Release Date: 17 Jul 2020

The Last Of Us Part II
Review Embargo: 12 Jun 2020
Release Date: 19 June 2020

Horizon 2 and R&C: Rift Apart will not have their embargos 1 day before release.

You said it yourself, the main issue in the reviews will likely be the value for the price (€80) which has nothing to do with the rest of your comment. "never mind the fact that they get to play the game for free anyway." You'd complain in most cases if they didn't take the price into account and call them elitist.

Also, what reviews actually complained about Deacon being a white male? You're not actually able to cite any so you're just lying to yourself. In the IGN preview that people always reference, if you actually read it, he praised Deacon and said he was very invested in the story (the opposite of what you're saying) https://www.ign.com/article...

"completely ignoring to mention the same issues in all the other games that they subsequently reviewed that also featured a white male protagonist" Yeah, because Deacon being white was never the issue with Days Gone. Just because you say it a 1000 times, doesn't make it true.

ArchangelMike1115d ago

Wow, your wall of txt suggests that you're way more offended about my comment than you think I am about embargoes. I don't even know what your point is. So why do you think Days Gone review embargo was the day before release? I think It's because the previews were generating bad PR, but what do you think. Please enlighten me.

LucasRuinedChildhood1114d ago (Edited 1114d ago )

@ArchangelMike

I already explained that. There are companies that create mock reviews for publishers like Sony and they give an estimated average score for a game. Jeff Ross (director of Days Gone) talked about one of the averages being almost bang on David Jaffe's podcast. They started receiving these mock reviews about 6 months out from launch. What I'm saying is veritably true. Sony already knew the game wouldn't get great reviews because ... they already had reviews.

And I never said you were offended about embargos. I said you're offended because you're calling people racists for not giving a game you like a high score, rather than just accepting the real criticisms. It's like calling someone a racist for not liking Mafia 3 (also very buggy at launch, lower score on Metacritic than DG). You're just lying to yourself.

Here's common sense: Days Gone got bad reviews because it's an open world game which released exactly 6 months after Red Redemption 2, one the best reviewed games of all time (it also has a white male protagonist). It's not theoretical physics, mate. DG fans on this site attacked RDR2 very often ("at least Days Gone is fun") because they were aware of this.

ArchangelMike1114d ago (Edited 1114d ago )

Woah, steady on there tiger. Who did I call a racist? When did I even mention racism?

And you assumed I was offended, which missed the point of my original post completely, because you fixated on comments I made about Days Gone, and lost the overarching point I was making about Returnal and it's apparent late review embargo.

Contrary to what you claim, I never said I liked or disliked Days Gone, neiither did I mention anyting about the review score for Days Gone. Those are just your assumptions. Has no one ever told you what happens when you assume?

I think you've gone off the deep end mate.

leejohnson2221114d ago

I smell an activist eager to be offended on behalf of others who arent offended and dont care

LucasRuinedChildhood1114d ago (Edited 1114d ago )

@ArchangelMike

"...lost the overarching point I was making about Returnal and it's apparent late review embargo."

You asked me to explain why Days Gone's review embargo was late, and I did that for you. I talked about Days Gone's mock reviews informing Sony what the Metacritic score would roughly be which Jeff Ross (Days Gone director) has publicly talked about. You could have replied to that point but choose not because I disproved your entire argument with actual evidence. I even gave the embargo dates of 4 Sony-published games, so ... yes, I responded to your point about Returnal in great detail.

"neiither did I mention anyting about the review score for Days Gone. Those are just your assumptions ..."

Half of your comment was that journalists didn't assess the quality of Days Gone correctly because they took issue with Deacon being a white male. Personally, I don't get offended when people quote the things I've said. haha.

"many game jounalists took issue with the fact that the main protagonist was a white male - as if that had anything to do with the quality of the game; and completely ignoring to mention the same issues in all the other games..."

I honestly believe many reviewers of games, movies, TV shows, ect. are basing their rating of a show on social issues. I think it can go way beyond just bringing up their own pet issues during reviews.

leejohnson2221114d ago

Well.fukin said ,.so accurate and truthful but also a sad reflection of modern activists, i mean journalists

nyckrazy1114d ago

Bro we played zombie horror white-guy games a billion times already. Days gone shouldve set itself apart from the rest by not having a generic whiteguy as the protagonist. Wouldve been much more interesting rather than typical.

cooperdnizzle1114d ago (Edited 1114d ago )

I know... how cool would it have been, if Deacon where a black baby??? That would be awesome... He could of had some bad ass one lines like... never send a white man to do a black baby’s job. Or as he is riding on the bike he could say... “now this is what I call a stroller..

Sarah could have said things like, “once you go black baby, now you’re a really lady”. He could blow up a huge horde, and scream “playtime is over”...

You are right dude.., the game could have been way more interesting if they would have just gotten ride of the terrible white male hero. God I hate that white guys are in everything.. ughh

cooperdnizzle1112d ago

@ robodrake Of course is was sarcasm, and you call me the dumb one? You know you are losing intelligence when you have to ask over something that is so clearly a joke. People on here take shit way way to serious, I wonder if you guys ever laugh or have fun??

Good-Smurf1114d ago (Edited 1114d ago )

When these clowns stopped review games for what it is instead they review it with whatever they wanted it to go along with their agenda of the month then shit hits the fan.
Days Gone was one of the victims.

kthxcrayon1114d ago

I played Days Gone and loved it. The core gameplay loop is very compelling, and a lot of fun. However, to cast off the negative reviews about the game as being due to the game being penalised for having a straight white male protagonist is to believe in a fantasy.

Critics didn’t criticise the character of Deacon because he was straight and white. They criticised him because he is a bland, static character who is a poorly written stereotype of a straight white male. His entire identity can be summed up as a ‘protector of women’, which -aside from the problematic implied sexism - just might be the most boring and cliche aspect to base a videogame protagonist’s identity around that I’ve ever played.

By the time the credits rolled, I had put dozens of hours into the game, and enjoyed the vast majority of it immensely. But for critics to suggest that the game could’ve been improved if the player character had something more meaningful to say, or to had a character arc that showed growth and development - feels like a pretty acceptable piece of criticism.

Imalwaysright1114d ago

I wasn't aware that there was any controversy surrounding this game or is that the narrative you'll be using if this game, that btw is garnering favorable previews, is negatively criticize by some reviewers? As for price, I as a gamer want to know if in the reviewer's opinion the price/return equation is favorable to me. Who in their right mind would hold that against any given reviewer?

1113d ago
SpinalRemains1381111d ago

Deacon reviews were because he's a cookie cutter biker dude with a porn star name. I don't recall anyone complaining that he was a white dude.

6.5 out of 10 having a straight white middle aged female protagonist. /s

jukins1115d ago

Wouldn't it be plus points for having a female ar least

Abnor_Mal1114d ago

Nah, in today's ultra woke world we find ourselves in they would have to be gay/polyamourous/sexually fluid, some other race/ethnicity other than black/white/asian(chinese/japa nese)/latin(spanish), non binary/transgender protagonist.

They'd likely be okay with the middle aged part.

I didn't disagree by the way.

Darkborn1115d ago

That's what I'm saying. If deacon was a gay black dude it would have been game of the year nominated. I hate all media these days, all they want is their agenda to be pushed

LucasRuinedChildhood1115d ago

With so many PS5 exclusives to choose from, it can be a little overwhelming to pick which one to play. PlayStation is killing it with the exclusives this year. Exclusive wise, what has xbox released this year?

VersusDMC29d ago

They won't complain about Microsoft not releasing games here but put all their effort into saying that only first party counts. Games like Rebirth and Grandblue Relink don't count. Games published by Sony like Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin don't count because Sony don't own the studios.

It's some narrative building so for when Hellblade 2 come out they can say, seemingly without shame, that Microsoft is actually releasing first party games this year. And claim victory.🙃

Chevalier29d ago

Weird 1st party games didn't matter when Xbox had so little, but, now they're important again? Guess Ark 3, Stalker 2 don't count any more?

KyRo29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

ARK 3 doesn't exist and it's just a timed exclusive. It's also a game that a majority of the ARK player base doesn't want as it's a massive deviation from what people like about the original game

Abnor_Mal29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

Honestly to me it doesn’t matter what they say, they are just finally getting a chance to say all the things PS fan(boy)s were saying to them for the past few years. Let them get that, they deserve a “win” for a change.

The new narrative is that suddenly first party games matter again when awhile ago they didn’t, but that was because they were struggling with the same three games with the occasional fourth or fifth. That games should be everywhere on all platforms since that’s whats happening to theirs. The consoles don’t matter just the ability to play anywhere. Whatever Xbox is doing Sony will soon follow.

They’re not moving the goalpost anymore, but rather just moving the whole damn stadium.

jwillj2k429d ago

Only a incel would care about who published what and who owns who.

If it’s not on the other consoles it’s an exclusive.

Killing what? Where are the 1st party games??
Stellar Blade and FF7 is what I’m seeing this year.. so shallow!!!!

andy8529d ago

Doesn't really matter as long as they're great games. Baffles me why people put an emphasis on 1st party. They're still games you can't play anywhere else this year

Cacabunga28d ago

Andy

PS brand is my favorite because of their stellar first party software.. currently I see absolutely nothing to go crazy for..

CS728d ago

Nonsense.

PS1 and PS2 was built on great third party exclusives like FF, MGS, GTA & Tekken.

raWfodog29d ago

Of course I love the games I’ve played from PS but I don’t believe we need to limit it to ‘exclusive’ to acknowledge that Xbox will be releasing some good games this year also. In that same vein, I believe that Xbox diehards shouldn’t limit their acknowledgment of good PS games to 1st party. There are plenty of good games to go around for everybody.

Tacoboto29d ago

This is a Playstation article about Playstation games and your comment is about Xbox. Can't you just celebrate what PS has without dragging this into console war BS?

ChasterMies29d ago

I don’t think Microsoft is releasing games exclusively on Xbox anymore. They have some timed exclusives that release on Xbox first.

Returnal, Astro Bot, and Ratchet made having it since day one worth it.

GT7 free updates and Spiderman 2 and others at 60fps have made this last year more than okay.

But yeah, it’s been dry lately. BG3 and third party have made great filler, but we ready for that SOCOM or Killzone announcement and some more 1st party goodness. Crossing fingers for Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement this summer.

Didn’t know Helldivers was exclusive! Wtf is going on at Xbox that they can’t get these games, series s strikes again.

SonyStyled28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Sony owns the Helldivers IP. The first was a PS3/Vita/PC game. It was never an Xbox game that they could ‘get’ a decade ago. I’m not sure what the upset is with Xbox here

CS728d ago

Lol, how do you ignore Rebirth one of the best games ever made?

anast28d ago

Looks like they are on par with the previous gens. Solid games all around. Interestingly enough, we can't say they released a bad game yet this gen. Unlike the Quiet Man dustup.
