Returnal Feels Like An Actual PS5 Game | Kotaku

A busted spaceship. An uncharted exoplanet teeming with hostile life. An emphasis on scanning objects, upgrading equipment, and retracing your footsteps. Those might sound like core components of a new Metroid Prime, but they’re not, at least not in this case. They’re the ingredients of a riveting—if somewhat punishing—action game called Returnal, out next week exclusively for the PlayStation 5.

ArchangelMike1116d ago

This is great to hear. I think this has been the concern that most peope have had interms of HouseMarque's pedigree in the rogure like genre and the price point. I don; tthink Sony would have made this a Playstatino Studio's title, if they were'nt confident that it would be able to stand as a AAA title.

bouzebbal1116d ago

Just realized that I actually own every single housemarque game.. This obviously makes them one of my favorite developers..

boing11116d ago (Edited 1116d ago )

Supreme Snowboarding was great!

Rebel_Scum1116d ago (Edited 1116d ago )

I literally have no idea about them or any game they've produced. Whats a good one on PS4?

SlothLordPootus1116d ago

@Rebel_Scum My favorite is still Super Stardust. Although simple, the game is incredibly addictive. Many people like Resogun better I think, which is also a great game in the same vein.

GottaBjimmyb1116d ago (Edited 1116d ago )

Just looked them up, never heard of half of their old games, like reap, elfmania and supreme snow boarders or their mobile games like furmin or tee it up. You must play a lot of damn games for a lot of years lol

Know all of them super stardust forward, other than alienation, but I assume that was in line with deadnation.

darthv721116d ago

I havent played a HM game I didnt like. Cant wait for this one.

bouzebbal1116d ago

Dead nation
alienation
Stardust
Resogun
Matterfall
...

cd11116d ago

@rebel

Dead Nation is a great couch co-op game.

Army_of_Darkness1116d ago

Sony has really been crazy interested in these time loop scenarios lately!
-death Loop (game)
- Boss level (movie)
- Returnal (game)
I'm sure there's more current stuff out there I'm missing from Sony pictures /games... But it's all good. I enjoyed the movie and Returnal looks dope.

"Returnal Feels Like An Actual PS5/PC Game."

There fixed it for you guys.

SDuck1116d ago

you know this is a ps5 exclusive, right?

SullysCigar1116d ago

Go play with your lego and let the grown ups talk.

anast1116d ago

It might be a PC game after it has been played to death and everyone else has moved on.

LegoIsAwesome1116d ago (Edited 1116d ago )

Damn too much butthurt in here, and here I thought everyone's cool now that Sony 1st party are now just Timed Exclusive. I was just stating facts that this is a PC in 2022 KEKW. Better sign that petition to remove Jim Ryan if you dont want another of this Sony "Exclusives" of yours to come to PC KEKW

kayoss1116d ago

Im ok with Sony "Timed Exclusives" games being released on other platforms as long as Sony consoles owners have first crack at it for a period of time. The more people who get to play some great AAA games, the better for the developers. Developers should be rewarded for making great AAA games. I just dont like the fact that Call of duty, Madden, battlefield, etc are raking in the money year after year when those games are pretty much the same games with some updates.

LegoIsAwesome1116d ago

"The more people who get to play some great AAA games" KEKW Yeah ok continue to tell that to yourself man, ppl who are looking to buy a PS4/5 will just wait for the PC announcement making Sony lose a potential customer. So with that logic in mind, Sony also got no exclusives just like how you guys are saying MS got no exclusives because it's in PC right?

RazzerRedux1116d ago

"I thought everyone's cool now that Sony 1st party are now just Timed Exclusive"

That's a bullshit statement. I'm all for every single PS game coming to PC, but Sony has said select games will be ported to PC and that is all they have said. You are just talking shit and you know it.

bouzebbal1116d ago

Does PC have Dualsense? So no, feeling like a PS5 game goes beyond the fact the game is running on PS5.. It's about the immersion

ScootaKuH1116d ago (Edited 1116d ago )

Right. But as of launch the only place you'll be able to play it is on PS5. That sounds pretty exclusive to me.

By the time it comes to PC in a year or so most people will have moved on to something else. Nobody, and I mean nobody, will be holding out for the PC version if they have access to it on PS5

hulk_bash19871115d ago

Why are y'all feeding this troll? Lol.

PowerPlayaaa1115d ago (Edited 1115d ago )

Delusional mate. WOW hahhahaha
Sony have even said SELECTED titels Will come to PC, not all Sony 1st party titles you donkey. So you've played a uncharted 4 and lost legacy right on pc. Or demons souls Remake, Spiderman 1 and miles Morales, God of war, Astros Playroom, Ratchet and Clank, TLOU 1 & 2, Ghost of tsushima, Shadow of colossus etc etc etc.
About 90% of Sonys 1st party titles is still exclusive to Sonys systems. Ffs mate. Get your facts straight before you say something, Pure jibberish talk dude.
You probably WISH all Sony exclusives were on PC right. So you can play em all Hahahahhahaha
Go buy a PS5. Then your all set 😎

anubusgold1115d ago

@ScootaKuH No, you PS fanboys have spent years saying xbox doesnt have exclusives because their game come to PC , No you little worm you dont get to change the game now you coward!

LucasRuinedChildhood1116d ago (Edited 1116d ago )

My only concern at this stage is the price. EU customers are getting a rough deal with Sony's current pricing (€80). €80 is almost 100 American dollars which is obviously way more than Americans are paying. UK customers are getting shafted as well.

If you remove taxes (VAT) which Sony have no control over, the game would be around €65 which is over $78, while without taxes Americans are only paying $70. That's almost a $10 difference a pop, and isn't fair to EU customers.

Unfortunately, a mass audience cannot regularly spend €80 a pop on games and will only dedicate that to AAA games. This should be priced at €60-€70 if Sony want to give it a good chance.

Luc201116d ago

Compare healthcare in the US and free healthcare in Europe eg UK. You know why you have to pay more taxes?

LucasRuinedChildhood1116d ago (Edited 1116d ago )

@Luc20

Sure, but without taxes there's still almost a $10 pricing difference which is my main issue.

The game is also going to be €10 more than RE8, for example. That puts it at a big competitive disadvantage.

Teflon021116d ago

Personally no one seems such a spit in the face price wise as Canada as far as I'm aware. I personally think people complain to much about pricing. In Canada we went from having a better dollar than the US by quite a bit to having a dollar work like 2/3rds. When we had the better dollar we paid the same price as the.. everything started raising price year on year. PS4 and Xbox one went up in price. Games went from 60 to 80 and tax knocks it to 90 here. While the dollar ratio is essentially fair. We didn't get it fair when we had the higher worth and it's basically $100 after tax per game and we didn't magically start making more money either

franwex1116d ago

I mean you could make a US account?

Either way the US seems to have the cheapest games in relation to purchasing power. Games also sell more in the US, so that expectation of profit gets realized.

The US also has local sales taxes from like 5% all the way to 10%.

So a $70 game could actually be like $75-77.

I still have a pristine copy of Elfmania for the Amiga. Terrible game, amazing graphics for the time though.

It's funny that out of all those big companies from those days, it's these guys and Team17 who are still around.

Resogun was one of my favourite games of last gen - Returnal will hopefully do well as it looks good and is releasing during a period where there isn't a whole lot to play on the new consoles.

GamingSinceForever1116d ago

The market is so starved right now of a true next-gen game that the reviews won’t even matter.

I_am_Batman1116d ago

Same here. I've gone from slightly curious to very interested since they've announced the game. When I get my PS5 this will surely be on the shopping list. 80€ still seems a bit steep for a roguelike bullethell shooter, but it might just be due to the fact that we usually don't see these genres executed at such a high production value. Hopefully the game is deep and varied enough to keep players engaged throughout the whole experience.

ArchangelMike1115d ago

Beyond Spelunky, I actually havent played any other rogue-likes, but it's not primarily the genre that makes me excited to play Returnal, it's a combination of the devs pedigree, as well as the setting and the story, but I think the biggets draw is the moment-to-moment gameplay. If this was a straight 3rd person bullet hell shooter with no roguelike elements, I would still be just as excited for the game. I loved Doom Eternal and completed that game on ultra-violence, and anyone who's played Doom Eternal on ultra-violence knows that it's an epic bullet hell shooter.

The new gen begins in earnest with this game by the looks of it.
4k60fps + raytracing, looks like a major achievement technically and could well be a cracking game too by the sounds of it.
This gens Bloodborne?

Father__Merrin1116d ago

This game will be hit by fanboy reviews that simply don't want this on ps5. Even if its an excellent game they will claim, Witcher 3 is better or lack of crafting or no mushrooms etc

4k 60fps + RT for £359 only.....

Thundercat771116d ago

The hate group will always find something to complain about. This Gen they are spending more time hating on Sony than actually enjoying their platform of choice.

King_Noctis1116d ago (Edited 1116d ago )

Why do you care so much about reviews? Let just enjoy the game that you like and had purchased.

BenRC011116d ago

So if it gets 3s all round we should ignore the reviews and just buy it?

RauLeCreuset1116d ago

I find that a bit ironic coming from someone who submitted a hit piece on Mile Morales (that got failed) in response to the Halo backlash.

SlothLordPootus1116d ago

With a lower profile game like this, an 80 vs. 90 metacritic could have huge implications for sales. We want to see more Housemarque games in the future, so high sales volumes would be great. Of course if it's not a good game, then so be it.

blackblades1116d ago (Edited 1116d ago )

We don't but you just cant ignore when sad haters review bombing a good game that a person like just because there mad.

"I felt like I was playing a next-gen game rather than one that straddles that transitory period between console generations."

Wow... To hear such a praise from Kotaku for a PS game is not common. I was right about the game giving Metroid Prime vibes which for me is AWESOME!

ArchangelMike1116d ago

Yep, I was also surprised when I read that headline and saw that it was from Kotaku. I guess the game must really be good.

The best PS5 exclusives 2024

With so many PS5 exclusives to choose from, it can be a little overwhelming to pick which one to play. This is especially true for a new PlayStation gamer who has yet to experience the wonder of PlayStation-exclusive storytelling. So, here's KnowTechie's take on the best PS5 exclusives in 2024 and beyond

PlayStation is killing it with the exclusives this year. Exclusive wise, what has xbox released this year?

VersusDMC28d ago

They won't complain about Microsoft not releasing games here but put all their effort into saying that only first party counts. Games like Rebirth and Grandblue Relink don't count. Games published by Sony like Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin don't count because Sony don't own the studios.

It's some narrative building so for when Hellblade 2 come out they can say, seemingly without shame, that Microsoft is actually releasing first party games this year. And claim victory.🙃

Chevalier28d ago

Weird 1st party games didn't matter when Xbox had so little, but, now they're important again? Guess Ark 3, Stalker 2 don't count any more?

KyRo28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

ARK 3 doesn't exist and it's just a timed exclusive. It's also a game that a majority of the ARK player base doesn't want as it's a massive deviation from what people like about the original game

Abnor_Mal28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Honestly to me it doesn’t matter what they say, they are just finally getting a chance to say all the things PS fan(boy)s were saying to them for the past few years. Let them get that, they deserve a “win” for a change.

The new narrative is that suddenly first party games matter again when awhile ago they didn’t, but that was because they were struggling with the same three games with the occasional fourth or fifth. That games should be everywhere on all platforms since that’s whats happening to theirs. The consoles don’t matter just the ability to play anywhere. Whatever Xbox is doing Sony will soon follow.

They’re not moving the goalpost anymore, but rather just moving the whole damn stadium.

jwillj2k428d ago

Only a incel would care about who published what and who owns who.

If it’s not on the other consoles it’s an exclusive.

Killing what? Where are the 1st party games??
Stellar Blade and FF7 is what I’m seeing this year.. so shallow!!!!

andy8528d ago

Doesn't really matter as long as they're great games. Baffles me why people put an emphasis on 1st party. They're still games you can't play anywhere else this year

Cacabunga28d ago

Andy

PS brand is my favorite because of their stellar first party software.. currently I see absolutely nothing to go crazy for..

CS727d ago

Nonsense.

PS1 and PS2 was built on great third party exclusives like FF, MGS, GTA & Tekken.

raWfodog28d ago

Of course I love the games I’ve played from PS but I don’t believe we need to limit it to ‘exclusive’ to acknowledge that Xbox will be releasing some good games this year also. In that same vein, I believe that Xbox diehards shouldn’t limit their acknowledgment of good PS games to 1st party. There are plenty of good games to go around for everybody.

Tacoboto28d ago

This is a Playstation article about Playstation games and your comment is about Xbox. Can't you just celebrate what PS has without dragging this into console war BS?

ChasterMies28d ago

I don’t think Microsoft is releasing games exclusively on Xbox anymore. They have some timed exclusives that release on Xbox first.

Returnal, Astro Bot, and Ratchet made having it since day one worth it.

GT7 free updates and Spiderman 2 and others at 60fps have made this last year more than okay.

But yeah, it’s been dry lately. BG3 and third party have made great filler, but we ready for that SOCOM or Killzone announcement and some more 1st party goodness. Crossing fingers for Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement this summer.

Didn’t know Helldivers was exclusive! Wtf is going on at Xbox that they can’t get these games, series s strikes again.

SonyStyled28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Sony owns the Helldivers IP. The first was a PS3/Vita/PC game. It was never an Xbox game that they could ‘get’ a decade ago. I’m not sure what the upset is with Xbox here

CS727d ago

Lol, how do you ignore Rebirth one of the best games ever made?

anast28d ago

Looks like they are on par with the previous gens. Solid games all around. Interestingly enough, we can't say they released a bad game yet this gen. Unlike the Quiet Man dustup.
