Doom 3 VR on PlayStation VR Tested - The Definitive Experience?

Digital Foundry : The re-emergence of virtual reality began when id Software mastermind John Carmack hacked together a Doom 3 PC build for Palmer Luckey's prototype VR headset waaaay back in 2012. Legal shenanigans followed, Carmack left id and now works for Oculus/Facebook. As for Doom 3 VR? It has re-emerged, this time as a fully formed game - but only on PlayStation VR. John Linneman goes hands-on while Alex Battaglia offers up his thoughts about the game.

I'm going to buy this game as soon as I post this comment, and will jump in on Saturday with Aim in hand.

I've had the disc version for PS3 for some time and never played it. Playing in vr will be so much better and immersive.

Have you tried Doom VFR and Wolfenstein Cyberpilot?

Abnor_Mal1153d ago (Edited 1153d ago )

I've played and like Doom VFR especially with the Aim controller several times, but did not like the look of Cyberpilot and avoided it. From what I've heard from others it was not that good, and as far as I remember you're controlling a giant mechanized dog. I would have perfered a smaller regular Wolfenstein game starring Blazcowicz.

The perspective in this game is the worst I’ve seen. It looks like you’re 3 feet tall and npcs look like carnival freaks with grapefruit sized heads. Desks look like they come up to your kneecaps. Great game but weird as hell in VR.

That's what John says too. A patch would be nice.

I've played a few hours overall I've enjoyed it but the perspective is aweful there's zero world interaction the soeed you run is sickness inducing it's made my stomach churn which has only happened once before in wipeout and it's no vfr but dammit if this isn't the most fun way to play doom 3 I don't know what is

Still love it but can only do 1 hour at a time after that you start feeling a bit spewey

The complaints all seem to stem from the fact that the dev basically just flipped the VR switch on this game, and didn't think of VR-specific issues that would cause in a game that is pushing two decades in age. Scaling being the chief issue. I'm sure that a patch could be quickly worked on to rectify those issues and resolution should also get a bump. Despite the game still translating to be really good in VR (let's be honest, most games are better in VR) these issues still shouldn't exist. It's sloppy. If a mobile device like Quest can pump this game out at decent res and FPS with no real scaling issues, there's zero reason for a PS4 to have these problems.

True. The Quest version was made by one guy as well.

Jumped into d3vr the other day and I'll actually agree with a lot of what DF are saying. And a patch or 2 could possibly sort out the ingame height issues. But dam, it is enjoyable.
We need HL2 psvr edition now please Valve lol. Let's relive the era 😁
