Control Ultimate Edition - the next-gen experience compared on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles

An Ultimate Edition of Control gives us the perfect chance to see new features added on PS5, Xbox Series X and Series S. All machines receive 60fps support, while the two premium consoles have an extra 30fps ray-tracing mode. How do they all stack up? And are the performance issues of last-gen versions behind it?

So aside from a bug causing stutter on XSX and "crushed blacks on PS5", the PS5 and XSX versions of the game are exactly the same.

Will_b1197d ago (Edited 1197d ago )

For me, the are the same

RememberThe3571197d ago

You got both I'm sitting here holding my dick?

GottaBjimmyb1197d ago (Edited 1197d ago )

IDK, the stuttering on 60FPS is a no go for me. Definitely not grabbing on XBSX. I would take a solid 30FPS over 60FPS with stuttering or poor pacing any day.

To be clear, I would probably be playing the 60FPS mode, so the stuttering irks me way more than crushed blacks, if I was planning to play with ray-tracing seems very similar.

Honestly, it has become obvious the series X is hurting from dev time being split between 2 consoles. Because it should be At minimum as capable as PS5, yet somehow always has worse performance. If you figure they put 100 hours into each platform to optimize, but that 100 hours has to be partially split between X and S, I don't think PS5 is ever going to not be the better running platform for 3rd party, despite the minor hardware advantage on X. Rant over, just baffled by MS choice there.

Babadook71197d ago (Edited 1197d ago )

I heard if you raise the brightness to 70 for the ps5 version, it gets rid of the black crush.

KRUSSIDULL1197d ago

What is even this bug? Not first game that had stutters even Gears 5 had it before it was patched. Should be common knowledge by now.

KingofBandits1196d ago

its just frame pacing. each target FPS has a "window" of time to display a frame before processing the next. for 60FPS its 33 milliseconds for 120FPS its 16 milliseconds. improper frame pacing is different then dropped frames but looks almost the same its basically when a new frame is drawn in before the current frame is presented

gamer78041197d ago

the stuttering is a bit annoying and so is crushed blacks with the latter being a huge issue for me. I remember when the xbox 360 had this issue for a month when all games had it due to a system level bug, even affected movies. I hope they can get both of these fixed for new people playing the game. The main issue is that you can't bring saves over otherwise i'd play some more but i've beaten nearly every quest in the game aside from the level-up missions that don't have any story.

RazzerRedux1197d ago

I'll take a color issue over stutter any day. Regardless, they are supposed to fix both.

gamer78041197d ago

@razzer everyone has a different tolerance for what bothers them. I hate losing data whether it’s to crushed blacks or whatever. My friend has really good ears and the original 360 bothered him with the constant whir and on his ps5 the coil whine when games on his ps5 get tasking really bugs him because of the pitch oscillation.

Did remedy say they are patching both? I haven’t read.

RazzerRedux1197d ago

"Did remedy say they are patching both? I haven’t read."

I read that on GAF, but I have not read that directly from Remedy so not 100% sure.

SullysCigar1197d ago

I realise you meant in terms of resolution and general performance, but there's also the DualSense features which have been thoughtfully implemented and really well received :^)

RazzerRedux1197d ago

Yep. DualSense has become a significant feature for PS5 that has been embraced by developers which many claimed would not happen.

blackblades1197d ago (Edited 1197d ago )

Na I seen the series x fps drop to 48 for a quick second. Series also dip while running around on 30fps without battle from what I seen. Other then that then yeah basically about the same.

GamerRN1197d ago

Where did you see this happen?

blackblades1197d ago (Edited 1197d ago )

@GamerRN start watching when they started talking about series x. It dropped to 48 fps, on 30 it drop down some when she was running around. These guys just be talking jubbrish and not straight to the point and dont say 100% what's been shown. Anyways it was like for a second not a big deal but still probably happens more times.

OpenGL1197d ago

I played Control on the Xbox One X and it also had weird performance issues when the map was on screen so perhaps this is related. I'm currently downloading the ultimate editions on both Series X and PS5 (thanks PS+) and will see how they compare.

SyntheticForm1197d ago (Edited 1197d ago )

I too played it on the Xbox One X and though it was pretty solid, I'd get some wretched hitching when pausing/unpausing and going into and out of menus. The load times also stunk.

PS5 version plays wonderfully for me. Maybe I've gotten dips and maybe I haven't but they certainly weren't discernable. Smooth and very fast loading and I'm really enjoying it.

I've been playing on 60 and switching to graphics from time to time just to check things out.

Bathyj1197d ago

I could tell Xbox had no advantage otherwise it would have said so right in the title.

potatoseal1197d ago

Just as i expected. The differences are insignificant. If you have to give a win, it would go to PS5. But it's essentially the same on both consoles.

This will be my first time playing this game, so I'm going to play in the 60 FPS mode. I don't really care to play with Ray Tracing at 30 FPS. I might check it out for a minute, but that's it.

crazyCoconuts1197d ago

One of the reviews I read said the DualSense effects were really great, in line with Astro's Playroom, which is a differentiator for me. I'm considering playing it on PS5 vs. PC just for that feature alone.

potatoseal1197d ago

The dualsense should be a differentiator for anyone with both consoles. That will make the better experience easily on the PS5

Hellcat20201197d ago

It's nothing mind blowing other than a little resistance when firing the gun.
But the RT looks amazing

TheTony3161197d ago

on the same level as Astro? You should go with the PS5 version then.

Neonridr1197d ago

the shooting is interesting offering the resistance, I like the clicking action. However feeling every footstep when Jesse runs around, not sure if I am liking that. My only worry with the dualsense is will we get too much stimulation on our hands causing fatigue. Are we able to turn certain features on and off?

1197d ago
CaptainHenry9161197d ago

I'm wondering will the dualsense features ever work on PC? That would be dope

buffig1197d ago

I have it on PC but I've "ONLY" got a GTX 1080 and Ryzen 7 1700x. So it looks and plays better on PS5. I'm really liking the dual sense features too. And for the record I've been back to play it on my PC and although some people might find them subtle, the dual sense features really do make a difference. The resistance and click of the trigger add to the gunfights in a very satisfying way

SullysCigar1197d ago

^ Cpt. Henry, I know it was being worked on. The last I heard they'd got the haptic feedback, but not the adaptive triggers working (or vice versa, not sure), but were beavering away for a full house, so fingers crossed!

blackblades1197d ago (Edited 1197d ago )

They didnt even mention the dual sense, kinda forgot about that. Also wonder if the xdealer crew still playing on Xbox considering they said they wanna play on the most powerful console with the best experience which we know isnt series x at the moment.

Taero1196d ago (Edited 1196d ago )

I'm a couple of hours in, only got the first two powers but I would say that's nonsense so far. So far there's a tippy tap when you walk and a trigger catch when you shoot...that's it. Now, there are more powers to go so perhaps they all add to the dualsense in some way but there's no way it's so far been even close to the controller 'tutorial' that pops up when you first load Astro.

Decided to play it again because I never finished the last part of the game because of being frustrated due to trying to platform & shoot enemies at the same time. The game looks nice in 1440p along with the 60fps. I'm breezing right on through with the easy mode (assist mode) to focus more on the weird story again & to get back exactly where I stopped playing in late 2019. After I finish the main campaign I can start the dlc I never played.

shabz6661197d ago

Awesome. Hope you have a great time with it 👍🏽

Destiny10801197d ago (Edited 1197d ago )

the x version suffers from constant stuttering

the s version no raytracing mode even at 900p

PS5 crushed blacks, probably be fixed in a update looks like a settings issue

Neonridr1197d ago

the frame pacing issue will more than likely be fixed too (and it's not constant). They both have a problem now that can be addressed.

Resistance 3 is such a great game. One of my all time bests.

cooperdnizzle687d ago

Couldn’t agree more. Still love It as a shooter to this day.

Just something about that game. I really wish they would just do a remaster, don’t even need a remake just bring it up to todays out put, touch up a few things if any, and I am there to buy it day one.

Of course I would love a remake built from the ground up. As long as they treated it like Shadow of the Colossus, or close to those type of remake. Wouldn’t want it to get the RE treatment…. Just because the game is already paced so perfect and hits all the right beats that I wouldn’t touch that aspect.
