Call of Duty Warzone Won't Have an Engine Shift for Black Ops Cold War Integration

There will be no game engine shift for Infinity Ward's Call of Duty Warzone when it integrates into Treyarch's Black Ops Cold War.

RedDeadLB1299d ago

I would hope so because the new engine is the best thing that has happened to CoD in quite some time.

boing11299d ago

Came here to post exactly that. That would be a major, major step back. Main reason I didn't like Cold War beta was because it's clearly made on this old, inferior tech. Infinity Ward knocked it out of the park with the upgrades. Should be other way around.

BenRC011299d ago

Its this gens ghosts. Will be forgotten and barely played online. Will skip it

onemanwolfp4kv21299d ago

i played the open beta bc i did not pre-order the game and im glad i didnt. yes there were some aspects of the game i liked but the cons, for me, outweighed the pros. i dont understand why treyarch went backwards. i imagine both companies would want to one up the other unless they are both content.

CantThinkOfAUsername1299d ago

Probably because Treyarch picked up development when Sledgehammer fell so it started before the new engine was finalised.

Rude-ro1299d ago

Modified engine.
The word new does not mean what you think it means.
At its core, it is still the original cod engine.
That is why the memory/file size is so huge.

porkChop1299d ago

No shit. They aren't going to switch back to the older, inferior COD engine. It's pathetic that Treyarch is going into next gen and still using their old engine.

excaliburps1299d ago

I kinda wonder. Like, can't Treyarch "borrow" Infinity Ward's tech? I know there's internal competion but the graphiical downgrade from MW to Cold War is kinda big. I mean, maybe it's not as easy as lending your tools etc., but it does seem weird.

That said, I prefer Black Ops Cold War's gameplay over MW 2019. Visuals, it's MW hands-down, but gameplay? I can't stand the camping meta.

porkChop1299d ago

They used IW's engine for World at War, and then built on it to make it their own. They can do the same thing with IW's new engine.

CantThinkOfAUsername1299d ago

Activision said that all Call of Duty future titles will utilise the IW 8.0 engine.

EazyC1299d ago

Apparently it actually runs on some frankenstein version of BO 4 and MW's engine, which is interesting as it's very outdated movement/graphics wise.

Also, re the camping issue, game modes like hardpoint and kill confirmed are a good way to mitigate this as they're objective-focused. Fundamentally, I don't see the camping situation changing all that much in the new game.

Nitrowolf21299d ago

its def showing its age in a lot of area's. I'm surprised they didn't have a new one

KyRo1299d ago (Edited 1299d ago )

Cut them some slack. They've had less than two years to make a game instead for the usual three year cycle because of how much Sledgehammer messed up and it shows.

I'm not defending Cold War because it is a step back but there's also reason for a inferior product. That being said Acti could have taken the year out considering MW is still riding high and the most successful game in the series but of course they wouldn't do that. It's Activision.

porkChop1299d ago

The thing is, that sledgehammer stuff happened last year. This game was already a year into development by that point. That means that even if this game had released next year as planned, it still would have been using Treyarch's last gen engine.

Rude-ro1299d ago

There is no new engine.
Modified.
Where do people get their info..., oh... sales pitches.

Still the old engine... just modified.
Why do you think these games are huge in file size? That’s make up on the old engine.
But it was also proven after release... so.. just so that you all know.

Wasn’t this not even Treyarchs game? I believe it was Sledge Hammers and Activsion handed it to David Vonderhaar a year ago to make it passable. Don’t hold me to that but I could have sworn I read something to that affect.

So that may be why the engine is old. Either that or like someone else said this is just going to be this new generations Ghosts. Which if that’s the case it’s a hard pass.

Although I admit I wanted to get it since it’s the usual yearly purchase. However there are far too many negatives going on with it at this point from folks who’ve shared their beta experiences.

CantThinkOfAUsername1299d ago

Yeah, there was a lot of tension between Sledgehammer and Raven studios so Activision appointed Treyarch to help development (Raven is the main developer this time and they are responsible for the campaign, so as I understand it, Sledgehammer didn't like being the supporting developer).

EazyC1299d ago

Well in any case I'm very doubtful that it will be a landmark CoD game given that MW was a monumental return for the series (the first-year sales figures released last week are greatest of all time), and this is cross-gen on the dawn of next gen (much like Ghosts).

ubers1299d ago

This is the single best piece of Warzone news possible. I mean, what were they doing to do... visually downgrade all of verdansk, scrap all of the doors on buildings?

OMNlPOTENT1299d ago

While I like the newer engine in MW, and the animations are great; I hate how the game plays. The TTK is awful. The game is campy as all hell, and there's no time to react to getting shot. It is by far the lowest skill BR on the market, even blackout took more skill. Cold War animations look like garbage, but it is significantly more fun to play.

SubtilizZer1299d ago

Completely agree.... I don’t see how so many people don’t see this.

Monetization in Gaming Is Getting Insane

Trevor Walker said: Well, here we are again. Every time I think I’ve said all I have to say about this topic, another studio falls into the same cycle. Monetization in video games seems to be getting more and more out of hand. If you’ve played any AAA title in the last 6 years, you’ve surely seen it. Battle passes, exclusive skins, and sometimes pay to win features have spread throughout the gaming industry like a plague, and we need a cure. Badly. I never thought I’d see the day, but the first game that comes to mind is one that holds a special place in my heart.

You need a cure. Here it is:

1. Don’t buy the game.
2. Don’t just not buy the game, announce it!

Announce on every social media/chat/discourse/streaming … platform available & imaginable that you will not buy the game that is coming out & state the reason that we all know. Then advise others to do the same.

Once you’ve announced it, announce it again for the next game by the same dev that you will not buy their future product either, because of their past dealings with consumers.

3. See 1.

PRIMORDUS41d ago

I don't sub to anything digital, games, movies, TV shows, etc. I just take what I want for PC for the unbeatable price of $0.00 🤣 But I sometimes buy the occasional game, but as for the others I mentioned yeah ok, haha paying for a streaming service to watch shows, movies, etc man GTFO lol

jznrpg41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

I know many people who don’t buy MTs or support gaas. But unfortunately there are just as many people that I know who do and they don’t care about it. Companies won’t stop doing it until the vast majority don’t buy anything. Some GaaS do it better than others but most are looking to make as much MT money as they can get away with and there’s too many who don’t mind it at all

Reviewers can prioritize monetization schemes in their reviews and give companies low scores based on severity.

This is one of the reasons why I've been focusing more on older games from PS3 & X360 all the way back to the NES.
Rarely can a modern big budget game garner my attention, because its just the same stale concept over and over again. Open world, busy work, grinding, where your job is literally to be a trash collector (constantly picking up endless resources off the ground), the entire industry has been copying Ubi-junk, and I'm just not interested.

Add in the fact that games are clearly releasing in beta form (sometimes very early beta form!), then there's randomized gear you have to pick up and upgrade, then all those boring skill trees to fill in, which is the laziest form of fake game progression imaginable.

Then there's the nasty business model of paying an extra $20 just to play an unfinished game 3 days early. Disgusting behavior, and anyone who supports those companies are actively making our industry worse.

The game industry has never been perfect, but its also never been this bad either.

Call of Duty Warzone Let's You Experience Today's Solar Eclipse In-Game

Call of Duty Warzone players will see today's solar eclipse happen in-game, which is kind of a neat thing to do by Activision.
