Sony: 'We Do Not Record' PS4 Party Chats

Sony issued the following statement on the matter: "Following this update, users are seeing a notification about Party Safety and that voice chats in parties may be recorded. Voice chat recording for moderation is a feature that will be available on PS5 when it launches, and will enable users to record their voice chats on PS5 and submit them for moderation review. The pop up you’re seeing on PS4 right now is to let you know that when you participate in a chat with a PS5 user (post-launch), they may submit those recordings from their PS5 console to SIE."

Just asking cos while I didn't look into it myself (online play and all that goes on with it is none of my business) all the scuttlebutt I heard today was that Sony was going to be spying on us now.

This is a quote from the article you linked which is a quote from one of the ToS policies:

“[W]e reserve the right in our sole discretion to monitor and (record) any or all of your PSN activity”.

Which actually contradicts what they're saying now; they're still recording but also giving users the ability to send recordings to them.

Yeah, users can record you, but not Sony. They will moderate it if you send a recorded sample.

It's another narrative of people doing gold medal-winning mental gymnastics to try and infer that the language of "users can record and send" to "sony records and users can send."

Honestly, all they're telling you is what you should already know when chatting online: someone could be recording you at any time because you can't stop others from recording your voice or whatever you decide to stream.

So is it saying that the toggle to turn off your PS4 console voice recording doesn’t work if you are chatting with ps5 users? It doesn’t say if they are continuing the “toggle” or not.
