From VG247: "It’s understandable why Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the way it is. After making six numbered entries in the series and a handful of spin-offs, it’s probably fair to say the team behind it was getting a little bit bored. Why just make another one of those? That’s the question that’s led to this weird, zany and brilliant mash-up of a game.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a Yakuza game to its very core. It features a wistfully realistic recreation of a slice of a Japanese city where the player tools around advancing a story of mob bosses, pride and honor while undertaking a gloriously eclectic range of side activities. All of that is familiar – but the most different aspect of Like a Dragon is also the most common element of the game: combat.
Fahad from eXputer: "Yakuza combat trades the series' classic brawling for menus and strategy, leaving some fans missing the beat-'em-up thrill."
It completely murdered the series for me. I love beatem ups, it's my favorite genre, always has been. The Yakuza series has always been the golden standard of that in my opinion and the annoying part is that they only went turn-based because of the reaction to a April fool's joke. Turn-based was something that I could never really get into despite trying. I wish I could get into it but it just does nothing for me and so when this game decided to go turn-based it just completely killed my favorite series which just really sucks.
I love the turn based battle system but I do wish they would have split the series into two franchises, the ones with Kiryu follow the classic battle system while the new ones with Ichiban do turn based combat
Least then both fans could have been happy and they could have cycled between each of them to keep things fresh.
I used to love using an arcade stick for these games. It's really really fun this way.
Pure turn-based games seem like a thing from the past when devs were trying to do something more cinematic but could not.
Not for me and I’m glad they made this shift. It’s been an incredibly fun game to play and honestly one of the highlights this year for me.
Who needs realism when you can throw a bike at a man dressed in a bin bag?
SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have announced that Yakuza: Like A Dragon has sold 1.8 million copies worldwide.
Very good for what was was considered a niche series once. Especially as its turn based 😅 can't wait to live on Infinite Wealth for a month
So excited for this! :D
Seriously, I'm more excited for this than most next-gen games.
Çant wait for this looks incredible
I guess for some, but it being a beat'em up was the primary reason i got into the series, and huge part of why im still a fan. This being a turn based RPG just made me lose all interest in it entirely.
