Demon's Souls Remake: Gameplay Trailer Tech Breakdown + First PS5 Frame-Rate Analysis

A generous slice of Demon's Souls gameplay emerged from Sony's recent PS5 showreel - at last giving us an early glimpse into its frame-rate performance. Early signs point to a robust 60fps showing from Bluepoint Games, with the game set to its performance mode throughout the trailer. Tom looks at the game as it stands, as one of the showcase titles for PS5's launch window.

For those who don't want to watch the entire thing:

Performance mode = 1440p/60fps
Resolution = 4k/30

tombfan1323d ago

That's an assumption, it's not confirmed they were having troubles analyzing the resolutions because of the excellent anti aliasing and the great motion blur.

They're assuming it's 1440p, 60 fps because to their imagination it's pretty hard to have that kind of level natively at 4k and 60 fps, BUT... we don't know for sure yet.

Fishy Fingers1323d ago

"even so native 2560x1440 is in evidence across the video"

DarthZoolu1323d ago

So this isn't running at 4k 60fps? How? I'm very surprised by that.

East76lands1323d ago

Ray tracing on resolution mode?

oof461323d ago (Edited 1323d ago )

@East76lands: Don't know yet. But they said the 1440p gameplay did not have ray tracing.

GreatSako20201323d ago

DF might be wrong. It might still be 4K. The Pixel density of this trailer is same as other native 4k games.
https://www.neogaf.com/thre...

Christopher1323d ago

Their pixel counting is way the heck off. No way that's 1440p. The pixel density is higher than the 4k Halo Infinite presentation.

CaptainHenry9161323d ago

Definitely looks better than Halo Infinite

ecchiless1323d ago

DF is sht, im gonna wait for nxg video.

I would seriously hope that a next gen 'performance mode' isn't just 60fps. 60fps should be standard on resolution mode. Performance mode should be 120fps.

Ju1323d ago (Edited 1323d ago )

I am totally ok with that. This game looks sick. And at 60fps. Level of detail is insane. That's probably a sweatspot to max out those 10.2 Tf. 1440p is actually great resolution if you can pump in that many details and run filters or scaler that you can't really tell it isn't native 4k. Who knows, maybe there is some new form of cb of dlss at work.

Drakul1323d ago

What? No 4k / 60 fps??!! If its true it sucks.

Marquinho1322d ago Show
AKS1322d ago

I'd be surprised if it isn't using temporal injection considering Bluepoint has already copied Insomniac's technique for the 1440p mode of Shadow of the Colossus. Temporal injection almost always looks better than 1440p games on the same hardware and would explain why it was easily mistaken for native 4K.

Got it preordered.

Going to be the first PS5 game I play.

I'd say that's a good start.

GottaBjimmyb1323d ago (Edited 1323d ago )

game looks excellent, don't care about the pixel count, textures look top notch, lighting is great and 60fps sounds like a dream. Hate it when games go for 4k at the expense of much more important visual quality, I 100% imagine I will be playing in performance mode when it releases, think it was good of them to show it off in that mode too.

I will buy first the SX but I'm definitely looking forward to play this game and Ghost of Tushima with enhancements.

TheDibbler1323d ago

Hopefully you don’t have to pay for those enhancements. GoT is an amazing game BTW.

Easily my most anticipated next gen game this year. Disk based PS5 and Demon's secured for pre-order.

Visually, Demon's Souls is probably the best looking game I've seen running on next gen. Miles Morales looked fantastic during the combat sequence as well. R&C looked excellent. Kena was spectacular. But Demon's Souls really is a next gen exclusive. How many next gen exclusives are launching this November? Not many. Demon's Souls will be a special experience.

UnSelf1323d ago

Demon's Souls was the first and only Souls game i played. Looks like the 2nd one ill play will be...Demon's Souls

GaboonViper1323d ago

Enjoy, Bluepoint are a fantastic developer.

SullysCigar1323d ago

With Shadow of the Colossus they managed to give me the same sense of wonder I had the first time around. That's crazy, usually remakes of games you love are still enjoyable...but you don't get the '1st run' magic.

They're really are talented and this is my most anticipated game because it's those guys and, well, because it's Demon's Souls!

toxic-inferno1323d ago

I highly recommend Bloodborne, if that means anything!

ChiefofLoliPolice1323d ago

You missed out on Bloodborne. It was a masterclass of a souls game.

UnSelf1323d ago

I’m not a big Fan of souls games. I like very difficult games but they have to be fast paced. I beat all the Ninja Gaidens, GoT, ffvii etc on their hardest levels but souls is too slow for me. I always liked Demon’s tho

RgR1323d ago

Bloodborne is the fastest paced souls game from from software

Sekiro is fast but more rythmic.

If you want a fast paced game you gotta play bloodborne.

UnSelf1323d ago

Now sekiro is what I really need. I’m waiting on a price drop to jump in

ChiefofLoliPolice1320d ago (Edited 1320d ago )

Right on the money. Sekiro reminds me alot of Bloodborne actually. Each souls game do have their own pace and rhythm but Sekiro reminds me a lot of Bloodborne. But Bloodborne is still my favorite though.

MajorLazer1322d ago

DeS was my first too, and it's still my favourite and most cherished game ever. I went in order, starting with DeS, then DS1, DS2, Bloodborne and finally DS3. Will pick up Sekiro in the next few weeks. Cannot wait to re-enter Boletaria.

Game looks breathtaking!

You're breathtaking, you are all breathtaking

Definitely picking DS on launch :)

ClayRules20121323d ago

LOL.

That E3 moment with Keanu just played in my mind while reading “You’re breathtaking, you are all breathtaking”

But, DS definitely looks breathtaking and I’m sure playing it on PS5, with the DualSense5 controller...oh my, that experience will be something else. Spider-Man: MM (which I’m excited for as well) will be the game played when a cool down is needed hours after playing this game.

Ashunderfire861323d ago

Me too I got my PS5 preorder secured Lets Gooooooo!!!!!!

Teflon021323d ago

Love that these games got 60fps modes now as an option for those who care. I love it

GaboonViper1323d ago

1440P/60 with a DLSS solution is the best way to go for both consoles, allows overhead for more effects and such.

LincolnHawk1323d ago

This. Couldn't agree more.

RaidenBlack1323d ago

Wonder what's the 60fps resolution of Miles Morales.

TheDibbler1323d ago

Except for the fact that neither console has a DLSS solution announced. I’m not sure if that will be part of the RDNA 2 architecture but I hope so.

Ju1323d ago

It must support some form of CB because it plays PS4 Pro games. Sony hasn't said much. I would be somewhat surprised if Sony didn't refine this .

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 1323d ago
Marquinho1323d ago

I'm perfectly fine with lowering the resolution in order to improve visual fidelity wherever the hardware can't handle 4k/60 at the game's target visuals.

DLSS is an nVidia tech btw. Not sure this is using any kind of ML super sampling.

TheDibbler1323d ago

Yes it is. I meant that neither console or PC version of RDNA 2 has announced any type of AI based up scaling like DLSS.

IamTylerDurden11322d ago

There are heavy rumors that Sony has designed PS5 to utilize DLSS technology and that they will lean on it in a similar fashion to how PS4 Pro was designed for cb.

Supposedly it could allow for better visuals without the overhead. A far more advanced solution than checkerboard, but another smart move. In reality, cb helped PS4 enormously regardless of the "true 4k" crowd's criticisms.

I'd rather have incredible looking games at 1440/60 with DLSS than Crackdown in native 4K. But that's just me..

In all honesty, it's the visuals on screen that matter, not the numbers. PS4 Pro was legitimately less powerful than 1X yet Sony had the best looking exclusives. The gap between SX and PS5 is half that of Pro vs 1X and if the DLSS rumors are true it could really shock ppl this gen when they compare the visual quality of PS5 vs SX exclusives.

With all the Microsoft hype over power, I truly expect Demon's Souls and Miles Morales to be the best looking games this fall. We'll see. I'm excited.

Marquinho1322d ago

@IamTylerDurden1

That's probably going to be Cyberpunk 2077, and it will look better on XSX.

Bathyj1322d ago

Yeah it's good to have the option.

The best PS5 exclusives 2024

With so many PS5 exclusives to choose from, it can be a little overwhelming to pick which one to play. This is especially true for a new PlayStation gamer who has yet to experience the wonder of PlayStation-exclusive storytelling. So, here's KnowTechie's take on the best PS5 exclusives in 2024 and beyond

PlayStation is killing it with the exclusives this year. Exclusive wise, what has xbox released this year?

VersusDMC28d ago

They won't complain about Microsoft not releasing games here but put all their effort into saying that only first party counts. Games like Rebirth and Grandblue Relink don't count. Games published by Sony like Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin don't count because Sony don't own the studios.

It's some narrative building so for when Hellblade 2 come out they can say, seemingly without shame, that Microsoft is actually releasing first party games this year. And claim victory.🙃

Chevalier28d ago

Weird 1st party games didn't matter when Xbox had so little, but, now they're important again? Guess Ark 3, Stalker 2 don't count any more?

KyRo28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

ARK 3 doesn't exist and it's just a timed exclusive. It's also a game that a majority of the ARK player base doesn't want as it's a massive deviation from what people like about the original game

Abnor_Mal28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Honestly to me it doesn’t matter what they say, they are just finally getting a chance to say all the things PS fan(boy)s were saying to them for the past few years. Let them get that, they deserve a “win” for a change.

The new narrative is that suddenly first party games matter again when awhile ago they didn’t, but that was because they were struggling with the same three games with the occasional fourth or fifth. That games should be everywhere on all platforms since that’s whats happening to theirs. The consoles don’t matter just the ability to play anywhere. Whatever Xbox is doing Sony will soon follow.

They’re not moving the goalpost anymore, but rather just moving the whole damn stadium.

jwillj2k428d ago

Only a incel would care about who published what and who owns who.

If it’s not on the other consoles it’s an exclusive.

Killing what? Where are the 1st party games??
Stellar Blade and FF7 is what I’m seeing this year.. so shallow!!!!

andy8528d ago

Doesn't really matter as long as they're great games. Baffles me why people put an emphasis on 1st party. They're still games you can't play anywhere else this year

Cacabunga28d ago

Andy

PS brand is my favorite because of their stellar first party software.. currently I see absolutely nothing to go crazy for..

CS727d ago

Nonsense.

PS1 and PS2 was built on great third party exclusives like FF, MGS, GTA & Tekken.

raWfodog28d ago

Of course I love the games I’ve played from PS but I don’t believe we need to limit it to ‘exclusive’ to acknowledge that Xbox will be releasing some good games this year also. In that same vein, I believe that Xbox diehards shouldn’t limit their acknowledgment of good PS games to 1st party. There are plenty of good games to go around for everybody.

Tacoboto28d ago

This is a Playstation article about Playstation games and your comment is about Xbox. Can't you just celebrate what PS has without dragging this into console war BS?

ChasterMies28d ago

I don’t think Microsoft is releasing games exclusively on Xbox anymore. They have some timed exclusives that release on Xbox first.

Returnal, Astro Bot, and Ratchet made having it since day one worth it.

GT7 free updates and Spiderman 2 and others at 60fps have made this last year more than okay.

But yeah, it’s been dry lately. BG3 and third party have made great filler, but we ready for that SOCOM or Killzone announcement and some more 1st party goodness. Crossing fingers for Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement this summer.

Didn’t know Helldivers was exclusive! Wtf is going on at Xbox that they can’t get these games, series s strikes again.

SonyStyled28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Sony owns the Helldivers IP. The first was a PS3/Vita/PC game. It was never an Xbox game that they could ‘get’ a decade ago. I’m not sure what the upset is with Xbox here

CS727d ago

Lol, how do you ignore Rebirth one of the best games ever made?

anast28d ago

Looks like they are on par with the previous gens. Solid games all around. Interestingly enough, we can't say they released a bad game yet this gen. Unlike the Quiet Man dustup.

I actually do not mind if Marathon releases on multiple platforms . I just wish that Marathon has a dedicated single player campaign.

The 7 Best Co-op Games on PS5

There's no better way to enjoy your PS5 than with friends, so here's our picks of the best co-op games on the console.

Cacabunga121d ago

For coop, get a used switch instead

jznrpg121d ago

I own a Switch and have never played co-op on it. I do play Elden Ring , Demons Souls and some other co/op games with my friends on PS5. Baldurs Gate 3 is the next game I’ll play co-op. Can’t do that on a Switch

Cacabunga120d ago

I was thinking for couch casual immediate fun.. not online coop games that require some adaptation.
