Japan’s initial Xbox Series X/S pre-orders have quickly sold out everywhere

Xbox's next-gen consoles are seemingly off to a positive start in the region.

Xbox Series S was available 24hrs after release in several EU countries while Xbox bragged about record numbers. Until they reveal the numbers, it means nothing.

Amazon shows PS5 selling more than Xbox in every country which means more PS5's were available.

cell9891328d ago

Lol to be fair Amazon sold a bunch of xbox one Xs with the confusing names

Prem8tuaProcrastin8a1327d ago

No they didn't. The sales rating rose, not the sales. The sales rating is traffic, not purchases.

East76lands1327d ago

If both sold out surely it's just a case of stock anyway? If PS had more units to sell than Xbox they'd be top and vice versa. No?

bouzebbal1327d ago

Amazing.. First xbox selling out without a single jap game announced on it..
It's the 5 xbox employees in Japan who ordered the 5 available consoles at launch..
We've seen it before..

hiawa231327d ago

LOL, but to be fair, the X1X, looks nothing like or sounds like a Series X, but I get what you are saying as many of us were trying to order the Series X on Amazon on the 9/22 pre-order debacle and it kept bringing up the X1X, but that is not on MS. The name is what it is and that is not changing✌.

This is about Xbox and you're talking about PS5, why?

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH1327d ago

Because he’s a troll. What he should be talking about is how Sony is going to screw people over with the Spider-Man upgrade lol...

morganfell1327d ago (Edited 1327d ago )

Nope. The PS5 is having supply issues. The demands are extremely high and it has taken every most wanted pole. But Microsoft had their supply ready. The PS5 uses a lot of custom components and thus the Xbox is out selling the PS5 by a wide margine on Amazon US, Amazon UK, Amazon France, Amazon Germany, Amazon Spain, and Best Buy US.

1327d ago
morganfell1327d ago (Edited 1327d ago )

First if you are not aware I am a PlayStation supporter. I own a X1X but I am not planning on buying again. I had one older game I like and I was, was a huge HALO fan but that's over. But as a PS Fanboy I am not going to sit here and deny what I am seeing. And yes the Bloomberg report was apparently without merit.

Amazon US video games bestsellers September (so far), when both systems initially went on preorder. Updated hourly so if Sony releases more stock this may shift:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/b...

Amazon US video games bestsellers 2020:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/b...

Amazon best sellers EU countries updated hourly:

UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Be...

Spain: https://www.amazon.es/gp/be...

France: https://www.amazon.fr/gp/be...

Germany: https://www.amazon.de/gp/be...

Best Buy US: https://www.bestbuy.com/sit...

Since the PS5 is leading all trending and winning every pole when it comes to the console people intend to purchase, if it is selling out rapidly and rabidly any time one appears in the wild (I have two inbound) then the only thing you can deduce is that the Xbox stock is far higher. It is possible MS fired every gun they had and bet on every console they could produce and Sony is being more cautious releasing based on weekly manufacturing estimates which is of course far more accurate.

None of this means a great deal as Sony continually releasing in waves could top final holidays stock of anyone else. And these are sales numbers and because stock is tight not a reflection of demand at all. At then end of the day none of this is going to matter until the new year.

morganfell1327d ago (Edited 1327d ago )

One correction that first link, US September sales is updated daily not hourly.

Here is UK, France, and Germany for the month of September. The PS5 is leading there. This is actually a shift from when I posted yesterday in the three territories.

AND THESE ARE THE NUMBERS THAT MATTER ALONG WITH YEARLY TOTAL RATHER THAN HOURLY ASSESSMENTS LISTED ABOVE:

https://www.amazon.de/gp/be...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp...

https://www.amazon.fr/gp/be...

They are still ahead in the US but if Sony keeps releasing waves that will shift. Sony said there would be plenty of stock so I expect them to over take the Xbox in the US as well.

SBox is still available in Australia.

Sayai jin1327d ago

I try, I try, but some people are just pathetic.

Marquinho1327d ago

Don't try do downplay Xbox just because you don't like it.

I was waiting to have better figures because Japan has always been an impossible market for Microsoft, but then it
happened:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media...

Sold out in few minutes and reached #1 in Amazon Japan... which means there was actually an important number of console over there. That's unbelievable... Microsoft actually has a shot in the country of the rising sun. Of course they won't "win" in that territory but we're talking about a country that historically plain ignored the Xbox. Wow!

leejohnson2221327d ago

Xboxes are widely available in the uk in all major retailers, so why in a region they find hardest overall would they sell out? No exclusive rpg for the Japanese market. Sounds like spin

1327d ago
CaptainObvious8781327d ago

On the Aussie amazon best sellers, the ranking is very very interesting.

PS5 sits at 13th

And the xsx sits all the way down at..... 85th

For a little more context, the PS4 Pro sits at 65th

And PS5 orders stopped before the xsx. so I think we can safely deduce from this that, in Australia at least, Sony's allocation was much much larger than MS's.

Maybe MS just made sure they had a large allocation in the US, so sacrificed other regions.

Cyberdik1327d ago

So is n4g a breeding site for Sony fanboys that think there is some war going on? Is there other sites that lean Microsoft? And is Nintendo like the independents?

xbox is like that little engine that could... it keeps trying to climb the hill that is Mt Fuji.

porkChop1328d ago

I find it interesting that Japan expects the rest of the world to buy their products, but many of them won't buy international products. The only American company I can think of that's had significant penetration of that market is Apple.

Magatsuhi1328d ago

Well Disney is pretty big there too.

Lexreborn21328d ago

MS isn’t doing a good job of appealing to Japan. Did you see their TGS showcase? Nothing on it screamed “HEY JAPAN, this is for you!” They showed games already announced elsewhere, and nothing that would make Japan feel secure in the device.

Japanese Devs are ALWAYS catering to westerners. But western devs and companies continue to ignore japans interest. Insomniac is the only western studio to make a game that appeals to Japan and it sold amazingly world wide and in Japan.

darthv721328d ago

MS had some pretty good success with the MSX line of computers. But that was years ago.

Rimeskeem1327d ago (Edited 1327d ago )

I think it's more the fact Nintendo and Sony were made in Japan. Kind of like how Xbox sells the most in the US. Xbox was also late to the party and consumer loyalty is a large factor.

Sony launched their first phone in 2008 but by that time Apple had already released their iphone along with major fixes.

Japan has also never been the best of friends with the US

Lexreborn21327d ago

How anyone can disagree with what I said and MS track record in Japan speaks for itself is just sheer fanboyism.

You would have to be under a rock to not acknowledge the poor performance and lack of adaptation MS has had in Japan. At some points it only sold 600 systems in a monthly report.

zenintude1327d ago

Lol look at this person who has never been to Japan... Levi’s, Coca-Cola, McDonalds... lots of American companies doing big business in Japan.

Sunny_D1327d ago

How is the people of Japan expecting the world to buy their products? Lol, you mean Japanese companies? That’s a completely different entity.

DarXyde1327d ago

It's Microsoft. The Xbox simply isn't an appealing product over there. Keep in mind, the people who actually ponied up for an Xbox 360 for Tales of Vesperia didn't take that very well.

Apple, McDonald's, Google, Netflix and Disney are pretty popular in Japan. On the other side of things, Toyota, Honda, Sony, Nintendo, Nikon, Studio ghibli, Asics, Sapporo, Yamaha, Uniball, and 7- Eleven are Japanese brands that are very popular in America.

It's not us. It's not them. It's Microsoft.

Father__Merrin1327d ago

Wrong it's just xbox. American products and pop culture are very popular there

jukins1327d ago (Edited 1327d ago )

Can tell you've never actually been to Japan.. american products are everywhere in Japan..its not uncommon to see a Harley rolling down the road someone popping a coke or rubbing suntan lotion from suave on their face.

porkChop1327d ago

For the record, I was talking about electronics/devices. Obviously stuff like Disney, Coke, etc., are super popular all around the world. It's my fault though, I should have specified.

aaronaton1327d ago

The Japanese will only buy quality products, they see through all the marketing for what it is.
For instance they will buy German cars over American ones 99% of the time.
The Xbox One sold poorly in Japan (and Germany for instance) because it was a massively inferior product, contrary to what MS lead us to believe at launch.

darthv721327d ago

@aaron, inferior... yes but 'massively' is a bit of a reach. We are talking XBO vs PS4 not the 2600 vs the PS4.

It had nothing to do with inferior... it had to do with appeal. The games just didnt appeal to the culture. Nintendo switch is inferior to the XBO (and PS4) but it does well due to the appeal of portability (and popularity of Nintendo franchises).

XCloud is something MS hopes appeals to the JP gamer as it gives them portability and access to a plethora of titles not found on the switch. And they can use their own gear instead of buy into something else.

Unknown_Gamer57941324d ago

It has less to do with where the product originates from and everything to do with not understanding what most Japanese people want in such a product. Don't forget, Disney is huge in Japan too, and a great deal many Japanese people love KFC. MS can get the completionists who buy every new piece of tech (who would also be pre-ordering a PS5), as well as those who have a particular fondness for American products, but it just doesn't have much to offer a typical Japanese gamer over what the competition can provide.

There you go .. let this be a reminder that this whole preorders selling out crap before next gen consoles actually launch means very little.

darthv721328d ago

there technically is no reason for pre-orders to sell out. Its not like thats all that is going to be made. So retailers should still be accepting them regardless as there will eventually be stock on hand to fill.

NotoriousWhiz1328d ago

They like the foot traffic from people trying to secure a launch console in store. It's like Black Friday a couple of weeks early.

Teflon021328d ago

If like PS4, it'll likely be like that ultimately where they'll allow preorders for later shipments closer to release

CaptainObvious8781327d ago

I kinda get what you're saying. Like having a queue system.

Most retail websites probably wouldn't support such a system though.

aaronaton1327d ago

I remember when the XboxOne sold out, and the hype was still around at launch, but then the dust settled and Mr.Reality had his way.

SinisterKieran1328d ago

You know what’s funny, I have no problem finding and S. I got onto Argos and it super easy to find

MatrixxGT1328d ago

Despite the buzz the day one console buyers are more of a “core gamer” crowd and most core day one buyers are not interested in a inferior product. Series S is more for casual crowd that doesn’t care about best power and just want to play with friends, etc.

Xbox Game Pass Suddenly Doesn't Feel Like The Best Deal In Gaming Anymore

With Microsoft closing studios, fewer new exclusive releases are expected for Xbox.

shinoff21839h ago

Not sure it ever was. It's upside was day 1 releases from 1st party. Few and far between plus it is just a rental service where you don't pick. It is fairly cheap for now that's a bonus. I think the beat deal in gaming is gamesale on reddit , and watching amazon

Eonjay5h ago

I got PSPlus and let me tell you it already feels like too much. As in, its nice to have all these games to play, but I'm still human and I only have a limited amount of time for gaming. The selection is definitely larger and better than Game Pass, but keep in mind, its 'Value' isn't something that normal people can really cash in on. Perhaps if you had it for GP ultimate, to get day on MS games, and only those games, and MS delivered on some bangers, it would be cool, but the same thing applies as with Plus. You are going to wind up paying for more than you actually use over a five year period. With GP set to go up in price, this exacerbates the situation. Plus you still got to PAY for games that aren't in the services that you want to play like GTA 6.

The only conclusion is that you pay more. You will not be able to get around that with any subs in the long run.

neutralgamer19924h ago

As a subscriber to Game Pass, I believe the service has the potential to be the best in gaming. However, to achieve this, it needs to consistently release three first-party exclusives each year: one AAA title and two AA titles, all with Metacritic scores of 82-85 or higher. Currently, it feels like we are not seeing this level of quality from Microsoft. Since acquiring numerous studios, the only standout game has been Hi-Fi Rush, and unfortunately, that studio is now closed.

I suggest that Microsoft's CEO consider bringing in experienced leaders like Jack Tretton or Shawn Layden to guide Xbox. Their leadership could help the Xbox brand become more competitive with PlayStation. Phil Spencer and his team, despite their efforts, seem to be struggling to keep up with the competition. It's concerning that Microsoft, having invested so much, is still unable to confidently report sales numbers without appearing lackluster compared to competitors.

Phil Spencer once mentioned that if Game Pass didn’t reach a certain threshold, they would reevaluate their strategy. This moment might be approaching. By 2030, there seems to be a higher likelihood of Xbox shifting to a software publisher rather than being a strong competitor to PlayStation or Nintendo.

The acquisition of Bethesda, motivated by fears of losing Starfield to Sony as a timed exclusive, hasn’t yet yielded the desired results. Over the past decade, Xbox has struggled with a series of underwhelming releases, and it’s time for a significant change to turn things around

Notellin4h ago

It was only worth it for me when I got 3 years for $45 per year. I'm not paying $18 a month to wait 6 months for their next first party release.

This service would work better for me if it was cheaper and you got their exclusives 3 or 6 months after launch. My gaming group all bought three years because of the low price and we ended up playing a lot of smaller games we would have never tried.

I can't play or keep up with all the new content and I suspect most others can't either. I just feel like the service is better in the other direction instead of focusing on the big budget IPs and "AAAA" budget games.

ThinkThink7h ago

Still the best deal in gaming for me, at least until it isnt.

Snookies126h ago

It most certainly is the best deal in gaming. It's definitely not GOOD for gaming. But, the value is undisputable right now. I fully expect that value to decrease within the next year or two though. It has never been sustainable. It's only a matter of time.

Eonjay5h ago

I really have a hard time with calling these subs value. This is because as I tried to explain above, I link value to not just money but also time. You can't play all the game in the service to completion. Most games you would never touch. You may 'try' games with the service, but you are only going to play the games you enjoy. Games you come back to and play for years. If you are paying $200 a year for a service for 10 years, thats $2000. With that much money, you can just buy and keep all the games you are actually gonna want to enjoy. This is just my analysis btw and its subjective based on what I define as value which may be different to you.

Chocoburger7h ago

"Suddenly", my gosh are people so slow on the uptake.

I've been saying this for years, its just a rental service nothing special, and you don't get to pick what the rental catalogue is nor how long it lasts. Anything can be taken away from you on a whim, even while you keep paying.

You know what the best deal in gaming is? BUY your games on disc / cart, OWN THEM, play them as much as you want, and no one can take them away from you.

Tapes and cartridges from the 80's still work to this day, and people can still enjoy them without having to pay any additional fees. That sounds like a far better deal than a corporate rental service.

Hofstaderman7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

This. Playing xenogears on my OG PS1 right now. Just got to Dazil and have most deathblows learnt but not accesible due to my level. What makes it bearable on a 4K tv is a AV to HDMI upscaler. Obviously has limits but good enough for me. No worries of the game being removed from a service too.

darthv726h ago(Edited 6h ago)

That's the whole point of renting... you rent, you play, you buy your own copy if you feel the need. What GP is doing is no different than the blockbuster or hollywood videos or every mom and pop rental shop. And people would buy their own copies if they liked what they rented.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH6h ago

Good luck getting some of these fanboys to understand that…

ApocalypseShadow5h ago(Edited 4h ago)

No. What game pass has done is tried to increase the idea that games have no value when buying. Only that the SERVICE has value through renting. Rent what you like when you like on any platform you choose that we're on for pennies.

When you push the idea upfront that developers games don't need to be purchased, not only does it hurt those developers, it hurts the industry with less revenue and profit to be made. Microsoft doesn't care as the only thing they care about is the subscriptions. They'll just replace you as a developer or your game with someone else if you go out of business or fire employees to stay afloat.

We have not seen one instance where Microsoft cares. They didn't care about Tango even if they made a good game that Shadow launched on game pass and killed the games sales. What makes you think they care about any other developer big or small? It's all about game pass right? This great rental service that's been known to kill game sales as Microsoft no longer reports them. And we've seen every NPD and worldwide sales of games on Xbox that are dwarfed by Nintendo and PlayStation game sales.

The selfishness of thinking about this bullshit value of the service is why many developers and employees have been hurt. The nonsense of Microsoft buying up publishers to prop up the service resulting in even more job losses.

You and Truth are part of the problem.

shinoff21833h ago

That may be the point from gamepass but we all know a majority of the base isn't doing that. Most are using it for their gaming period.

romulus233h ago

Yeah and where are those Blockbuster or Hollywood Videos now? The problem is you claim people will "buy if they feel the need" but they clearly are not doing that and the numbers prove it, MS is removing physical games from stores becasue they know people aren't buying them.

darthv723h ago

@romulus... well the fall of BB and HV was due to the declining markets for physical media. something that has been happening to gaming as well. The PC market is 99% all digital and it doesnt seem to stop anyone from buying. Consoles are becoming no different. People used to try before they buy thanks to demos... now it happens that these demos are the full thing. And yes, people ARE actually buying the games as a result of GP. You, shin & shadow just arent paying attention, or you deliberately choose to ignore that fact.

Fishy Fingers7h ago

I'll probably download 4 of the games they announced coming today over the next month for £9. Seems ok to me.

But then, I tend to play single player games and i rarely revisit so a "rental service" suits me. Pretty much everything I play on PS is via PS+ extra.

monkey6026h ago

I am the complete opposite. I have ditched both GamePass and PlusExtra because I find I just add stuff to my play later queue and end up playing all the games I've bought instead. I went a whole year on both services and barely used them at all.

monkey6024h ago

Sure are. I've stopped buying new releases day 1 too so it might come to the stage where I get through my backlog and whatever I have skipped over for a later day might start showing on these devices and make it too tempting to pass up. Not sure how I feel about the services as a whole either though.

Even now, I just finished playing Mutant Year Zero and kinda want to pick up Miasma Chronicles. I could get Plus Extra to play it but I'm tempted to just buy it on sale instead

shinoff21833h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Same. I've had both services for awhile now and barely use them. Buying games just makes more sense. I just gotta cancel still though

Mutant year zero was an awesome game btw

Unknown_Gamer57947h ago(Edited 7h ago)

It was always overrated. It only ever appealed to a certain subset of gamers anyways, which are the type who don’t care about owning games and are content to just experience them once and move on…or people who wanted to play CoD without buying it. It never seemed that glamorous to me, and I’m not at all surprised it has turned out to be unsustainable for MS.

attilayavuzer4h ago

Looking at GP attach rate for current gen Xbox (70%), the actual subset is gamers that want to purchase games.
