Amazon has all the money in the world. Why can't it make a good video game?

Amazon’s games have struggled to connect with the notoriously skeptical gaming audience, and it’s looking increasingly likely they never will. Here’s why.

RaidenBlack1371d ago

Bezos is more interested in space exploration.

peppeaccardo1370d ago

In my humble opinion, knowing a bit of Bezos' business acumen, the only thing that would come out of his games studio would be a AAA game as a service, with microtransactions, seasons passes and all the shenanigans that would make the initial investment profitable for the years to come. It will NOT be a single player story with an ending.
He could buy Santa Monica studio if he wants .... but why would he ?

xHeavYx1370d ago

If Microsoft has taught me anything, it is that having all the money in the world doesn't guarantee having good games. You need people who understand the industry and are not too constrained with their individual vision.

NecrumOddBoy1370d ago

Are you confusing Bezos with Elon Musk?

nowitzki20041370d ago

That is more important than gaming.

Tapani1370d ago

He is interested in all profitable and growing businesses in the world + space travel. The reason he cannot make a good video game is very simple: you cannot buy inspiration. Artists won't create art for money, it is the process of creation they like.

To be honest the gaming business needs more than money, look at microsoft for example not saying they never made a good game but they have a hard time delivering good content on Xbox unlike Sony and Nintendo that have been doing it for years, it takes people with great experience and passion for gaming in order to succeed.

Double_O_Revan1371d ago

Exactly. Companies like Google and Amazon just see the profits the gaming market makes and want a piece of it. But what they don't want to do is take the time and effort it takes to develop great studios and great games. Their just in it for the quick buck.

sprinterboy1370d ago

Google and apple want the nxt fortnite hit or Minecraft hit imo not the 200 team studio spending 100million on a single player only game which might bomb or only sell 3/5m.

Seraphim1370d ago

yep, it takes talented people along with money. Not to mention great ideas, leaders, execution, etc, etc. You can throw 500 million into something and end up coming out with a polished turd. And let's not forget Amazon Games Studios was created what, w/in the past 5 years? It takes time, even with money, for the ball to roll. Even with, hypothetically, all the money in the world thrown at a project it still takes time. Be it 2, 3 or 5+ years. Almost every phenomenal game has taken 3-5 years to develop.

As for Amazons case. I think their focus is in the wrong place. What few projects I have seen of theirs just don't seem all that interesting. I did see tonight [Arekkz on youtube] that Amazon signed a deal to bring over a Korean game called Lost Ark to the West. My first concern is whether or not it'll see a console release as I'd imagine it's a PC game but I honestly have no clue. The game itself looks pretty solid. But that's not an Amazon game.

imo they need to hunker down, create a Diablo-esque game, a 3rd person Action/Adventure, maybe even something Soulsbourne like. Work on some core genres that have the potential to gain the interest of many. At the same time just creating it doesn't do anything. It has to have a great team of developers who are interested in, a solid narrative, solid level/world design, interesting enemies, etc and something of the utmost importance, a great and interesting looking lead. A Kratos, Lara Croft, Nathan Drake, Alloy,

Baza1370d ago (Edited 1370d ago )

Yep it takes very talented people (limited quantity) and passion at the executive level, putting making quality games first. Not how do we make money!

rainslacker1370d ago

Exactly. The desire to make a good game, and not just some focus tested commercial product packaged as a game is more important than money. Relatively speaking, the cost to make a game isn't really all that much, and investment is a drop in the bucket for those who have that kind of money to invest in gaming to begin with. But when they try to make something that will just return a butt load of money, but has no soul, it falls flat, or they make their game too heavily focused on trends, instead of just thinking about what makes a good game.

Same thing has happened to Hollywood, and it went down the crapper as well.

Hahaha, great take Raiden! I agree with you also Zaf - it´s a shame Crucible turned out the way it did! Thanks for maintaining and keeping the pending section alive! Oh, also - if you wouldn´t mind - i just need one more approval on my Atomicrops review. I would appreciate greatly if you could take a quick look at it, and see if it´s up to snuff. I really want to get my review out there - because it is such a hidden gem!

RedDeadLB1370d ago

I'm pretty sure you need to care about something for it to be good.

LoveSpuds1370d ago

Worst company on the planet! Treat their staff like shit, killed the retail sector here in the UK, yet never pay a penny in taxes.

The got into gaming for the wrong reasons, just like Microsoft, they dont care about the industry per se, they merely want to profit from it.

sprinterboy1370d ago

Yeah amazon just want the nxt Minecraft or fortnite killer nothing more.
I went for training day at amazon a few years ago and made it to 1st break time and immediately got into the car and fucked off haha.
Disgusting place how they treated the staff and that was evident in about 2 hrs of being there.

Nearly Half Of Gamers Play Video Games To "Express Themselves," Study Finds

Many players find it easier to express themselves while playing games. Yet, over half of the surveyed gamers still play to relieve stress.

H919h ago

I wonder what place made this study, and it's Fandom, no wonder half of the people said that, I find it hilarious that Fandom of all places did manage to pull more than 50% for the argument of playing games for self expression

phoenixwing16h ago

Honestly i don't believe this statistic. All we need is an executive to believe it and they'll focus more on how to "express" ourselves over good gameplay and further ruin gaming.

FinalFantasyFanatic16h ago

I actually just play to relax/have fun, get immersed in another world for a while and enjoy the story/characters, who the hell plays to "express themselves"? I can understand how that applies to say Minecraft, where you're actually making things, but I don't think you can apply this to most games.

Why Is No One Making AAA Horror Games Anymore?

Saif from eXputer inquires, "Despite the everlasting popularity of the genre, why hasn't there been a good AAA horror game in a while now?"

Jin_Sakai3d ago

Because the gaming industry is obsessed with live service games.

Rynxie2d ago

Because he touches himself at night to characters like lady Dimitrescu.

Crows902d ago

You're the one still thinking about her

Rynxie2d ago

@crow

Did I give away your secret? It's okay, if you sit on your hand and numb it, you can pretend it's her playing with your little stick.

MaximusPrime_3d ago

Good for me, I have no interests in horror games

-Foxtrot2d ago

Even when they do it's first person trying to copy Outlast, Five Nights, P.T etc

I think the Dead Space / RE2 / RE4 Remake and the Evil Within 2 showed you can have a good story based, third person survival horror game.

jeromeface2d ago

remakes is another good reason

thesoftware7302d ago

Calisto Protocol was also fun with fantastic presentation.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

I feel like we haven't had much in the way of horror games for years, I think it became rare after the PS2/PS3 gen. Maybe i'll pick up that Crow Country that recently came out, that looks good.

Venoxn4g2d ago

Crow Country needs some more love.. and more exposure

Redemption-642d ago

Because outside of a fee games, most don't sell that well

Crows902d ago

So in other words...AAA publishers don't have creativity or passion for games.

CrimsonWing692d ago

Didn’t we have Dead Space Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake last year?

thorstein2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Among others

And isn't Dying Light 2 a horror game?

Scissorman2d ago

And Alan Wake 2 and Alone in the Dark.

on_line_forever1d 20h ago

I like Alone in the dark but it's not AAA game

richardmmorales2d ago

We also had The Quarry and The Dark Pictures The Devil In Me.

N64: Recompiled — Creating Native PC Ports Is A Godsend For Game Preservation

"In a time when companies don't care about preserving games, I have high respect for the creators of projects like N64: Recompiled." - Hanzala from eXputer.

gold_drake4d ago

it is, i might be finally able to play Snowboard kids 1 full screen ha.

purple1013d ago

il beat you to the ski-lift,

framerate on snowboard kids was shocking, do you remember./?

talking of shocking framerate and kart racers style games,
Sony had a gem on ps3, with 'Modnation Racers' but again, framerate was so terrible, still fun though, indeed, when is drifting sideways not fun, the answer is never. we have not seen enough of that game, technically some people made race tracks/games in dreams and little big planet etc, but its just not the same,!!! grrrrr

morning rant over.

here, relive some ,memories. https://www.youtube.com/wat...

itBourne3d ago

The load time on ModNation where also excruciatingly long... But man oh man I wish that game took off more, so much fun! Could turn off garbage rubber banding, I had karts with 100's of stickers to design some crazy cool stuff, custom tracks. Fantastic undeappreciated game

gold_drake3d ago

SK1 had a fairly good framerate. sk2 maybe not so much ha

Redgrave3d ago

Some food for thought:

Would you donate your physical copy of a really rare/expensive cartridge (Conkers's BFD, Bomberman 64 Second Attack, Ogre Battle 64, the two Castlevania titles, etc) to those managing this project for the greater good of getting them preserved online for all to experience at some point?

UltimateOwnage3d ago

As long as it meant they never took money from Patreon and invited a DMCA takedown / lawsuit by Nintendo to take it all away. After seeing the whole debacle with Yuzu I now question how long any of these teams can maintain game preservation efforts through emulator development, or otherwise.

franwex3d ago

I mean. They may borrow them…

Profchaos3d ago

Is it realistically needed though I would not personally give anyone my old carts for games that are already persevered and easily available online

Inverno3d ago

The snippet of ray tracing at the end of the og trailer was low-key amazing. I found out thanks to Nerrel who also made a texture pack for MM, and i can't wait to see how much more great this game will be in the near future. With model swaps, ray tracing, retextures, and a more quicker process than decompilation, it's gonna bring new life to N64 games.

Profchaos3d ago

There might need to be a bit of clarification recompilation is not the same as decompilation.

This is basically a container to excite the rom within but allows for all sorts of beat additions and tricks like new lighting effects such as ray tracing to be added.

But decompilation would ultimately be king as it allows for a widespread porting capabilities and uses the assets from games to build a native install for PC or whatever the target system is e.g Mario 64 for PC or sonic mania for psvita / wii
