I'm looking forward to the day that the Fortnite cashpool starts to dry up, and they can't just throw money into trying to take over the entire games industry, as a whole.

Silly gameAr1371d ago

All of the companies involved are known for throwing money around, man. Epic isn't the good guy here, but then again, none of them really are. It's all about money at the end of the day.

Olly_S1371d ago

Think I may have said literally that in the article. :)

blacktiger1371d ago

well said, only fanboy fights over a corporation lol!

abstractel1371d ago

Epic is as good as they come. The megagrants? No strings attached money for projects anyone can submit that they see potential in. They just announced a $1.78 billion more to the megagrants. They are taking the money they've earned and reinvesting a fair amount of it into the games industry. Unless I've missed something they haven't done anything "evil" or "horrible", they are the opposite. They are stimulating indie development (and tools).

Thunder_G0d_Bane1370d ago

I wish people would realise this about all companies. The amount of fanboys for Sony on this site is ridiculous. Like they ain’t the same company that said if you can’t afford the ps3 get another job.

All these corp companies are shady.

I really don't get this Epic hate. They make billions off a game and what do they do? They give away free games on a very generous basis, they buy up huge companies like Quixel Megascans and make everything free, they give you free resources to make your own games, they let you use their engine free of charge if your game doesn't sell more than a million dollars, they give devs a proper cut of the profits of their game and what does the community do? They turn on Epic like the children they are. Tell me, what has Steam/Valve/Gabe done for you lately?

ocelot071371d ago

Agreed don't get me wrong Epic are no saints. But they do give back to the consumers. Took away the 30% fee from apple to make the vcoins cheaper for the players. People cry about it.

They gives free games every week to anyone with a epic account. Not just small indie games but big AAA ones as well. People still complain. Last week they gave away Total War Troy a new game free on release day what do some people do? Complain why are they complaining? Because it's not on a certain store front just yet.

You are correct. What have Valve done lately? In order to get me to take my wallet out and buy something from them?

Sophisticated_Chap1371d ago (Edited 1371d ago )

The part ownership by Tencent, which has ties to the CCP, is the main thing I and many others don't like about Epic.

calactyte1371d ago (Edited 1371d ago )

Right, it's crazy Lionsguard. I'm a game developer. Epic gives me free access to their server infrastructure called EOS (Epic Online Services) that facilitates matchmaking, private rooms, lobbies, crossplay (across Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo consoles) and leaderboard stats tracking. It's free so I don't have to worry about paying server costs when I want to make a game that supports online play. Let that sink in..this is FREE.

Epic Games is pushing for the industry to only take 12% of the money when a purchase is done through their store. Sony and Microsoft (well I can't say how much they charge because of an NDA but it's more than 12%).

That doesn't even mention the games that they fully fund. I'll be the first to admit that the Epic Game Store isn't at all comparable to Steam but they've steadily upgraded it since it launched. All companies are in business to make money so I agree there are no "good guys" here. Epic obviously wants to get developers and gamers on their side so they offer all these goodies. I don't see Apple or Google doing anything like this. So yeah Stadia can F-right off. Same with Apple Arcade.

MadLad1371d ago

My problem with EPIC is they seemingly only had issue with the games industry after Fortnite, and their large Tencent buy-in. Now they have a problem with virtually every storefront they made use of their entire existence prior.
You see a company making pro-consumer/dev moves; I see a company doing everything it can to increase its relevance in as many gaming markets as possible, and fast.
If EPIC woke up tomorrow, and had the lion's share of the PC/mobile gaming market, I promise you that they wouldn't be throwing out "pro consumer/developer" rallying cries, and would simply be looking at the bottom line.
Tencent owns 40% of the company. Tell me Tencent is pro consumer.

343_Guilty_Spark1371d ago

The Sony fans seem particularly hateful of Epic and I just don't understand why.

I love my iPhone and have stock in Apple but the company is ass when it comes to how the treat developers.

steven_seagull1371d ago

Dont talk shit about Valve, man. Show some god damn respect

blacktiger1371d ago

everyone does that, when they lose or dont have monopoly they lower it down and do the blame game lol!!!!! until they get eleminated and then raise the price. I've seen this before, it's a typical business and not to mention this is how government does it with political party.

ThomasDaTank1370d ago

How very one dimensional thinking. You are only thinking of games games games. Epic has no problem paying millions to do collabs with Marvel and DC but couldn't care less about even paying out a little to others when they put in emotes from pop culture i.e Carlton Dance. Epic is using Coral Castle for its own means which is profit without permission. Epic is not the good guy simply because you get free games.

"They turn on Epic like the children they are" Oh really! Epic tries to weaponize their fanbase because they don't like another mega-billion dollar corporation by making some edgy video parody rather than simply let it play out in court. When Epic went full anti-Valve, I'm sure Valve didn't go vocal on social media like Mr. Sweeney and tell their fanbase to attack them.

While Epic's ideals are good by taking less of cut and giving back to developers, suddenly expect all other platforms to do the same without exception.

telgou1370d ago

Epic introduced regional pricing to my country (for many games but not all, it depends on the developer i guess) while greedy steam NEVER did that to a single game... even though we are as poor as those countries who got it.
This is on top of what you already mentioned like free games.. more profit for developers...etc
They are all big companies competing for the money but i'd take Epic and its prices over steam, they just have to step up their game and make a client like steam.
Competition between companies is what is best for consumers but steam is not even trying so hopefully Epic will win more people.

Cobra9511370d ago

They had the temerity to compete against Steam. That's the source of the hatred.

This is very generous. Epic clearly cares about the industry and empowering the developers to make epic 😉 experiences. "Epic Games had settled on a 12% revenue cut for titles published through the store, as well as dropping the licensing fees for games built on their Unreal Engine, normally 5% of the revenue."

One hit wonder Epic Games?? Fortnite is just the biggest game in the world and has been going on 3 years. Ever heard of Gears Of War? How about the Unreal Engine? Epic Games is way, WAY beyond being a one hit wonder.

Nice try writing In a way to come across cool, tho. You failed miserably, but whatever.

Olly_S1371d ago

Yep, in the way Google are a one trick pony. Glad you enjoy satire as much as I do. ;)

rainslacker1370d ago

Forgot to mention the unreal game. One of the first arena shooters which set the standard for many years.

I'm always impressed with games journalists who seemingly have no clue about the industry they're reporting on.

TheColbertinator1370d ago

I'd root for them if they just made me a new Unreal Championship

rlow11371d ago

Well, just when you think you have all the momentum.........Bazinga!!

RazzerRedux1371d ago

Suddenly feel the need to sue somebody.

The next guy who replies below.....I'm suing you.

italiangamer1371d ago

If you're american that's perfectly normal, in the USA suing is a national sport!

RazzerRedux1371d ago (Edited 1371d ago )

haha.....sad but true.

And I'm suing you as well.

blacktiger1371d ago

"suing is a national sport" I LIKE THAT!

rpvenom1371d ago

The cop who instigated the altercation with Masai Ujiri also sued him.. so yes.. very american

rainslacker1370d ago (Edited 1370d ago )

I'm counter suing for the pain and anguish of the lawsuit your going to file against me. Even if you win against me, my trauma is worth at least 3-4 billion, but I'll settle out of court for half of that...and a double scoop ice cream cone...waffle cone though...none of that generic stuff

"..an interesting game many have no interest in playing" ....what? For those many people, there are also many that love it and play it a ton. This is a really dumb article.

ChasterMies1063d ago

Fortnite is the most popular game in the world. I doubt Epic needs help from fraghero.com.
