Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) Review | TechRaptor

Microsoft Flight Simulator is a beautiful game, from the wonderfully crafted planes to the accurately recreated world it's amazing the level of detail that has been crammed into this game. Even as an entry point for new players the tutorial does a great job easing players in. For those wanting to get further into the world of Flight Simulator though don't expect any handholding as more responsibilities are thrust upon you. Those driven enough to learn the systems and create the own objectives in the game will have a lot of fun but if you're seeking missions or levels to complete then you won't find it here. Those out there that already are fans of Flight Simulator are in for an absolute treat as every aspect of the game has been improved from prior versions

This looks absolutely stunning, but I'd get so bored quickly with it. Just not my type of game...but those graphics! FFS give us dogfighting, or at very least some worthwhile objective, even in a spin off or something!

Imagine a Crimson Skies or Ace Combat game with this graphical fidelity, it would be amazing I reckon.

crimson skies.... that is criminally ignored. Especially now with a much more robust infrastructure for online multiplayer.

Yeah they could surely add dogfights or intercept jets or escort missions like airforce one or something like that or maybe even Newyork helicopter tours where you get stars for how good the tour was?

A tour sounds really great. I’d love to do some virtual tour from high up in the sky.

I'd love to see an official flight combat game come from this. MSFS has always excelled at accuracy in flying.

OTOH, I also question if I'd find a highly accurate flight combat game appealing, as even the advanced controls within more arcady type games such as Ace Combat kind of annoy me at times. Steering with the pedals and dealing with thrust and yaw and all that is a lot of work. Makes me impressed just how much fighter pilots have to know to actually fly like they do, especially when coupled with G-Forces and constantly changing perspectives and being able to keep a plane in the air when moving based on relative position.

But, if anyone could make a highly accurate model for such a thing, at least the flying part, it would be those that make this series. MSFS has always excelled at it's flight simulations relative to what was available in technology in it's time. All the way back to it's vector graphics on the 386....where I absolutely hated the game, as there was no easing in to learn the controls, and you either knew how to get a plane off the ground, or you crashed....if you could even learn to get the plane moving on the runway at all.

As far as flight combat, I'd expect mods to offer this before MS does. But MS has a real oppurtunity to make it happen.

I feel they may have to offer controls that would appeal to the more casual gamer though. Not make it mandatory of course, but a flight combat sim of this magnitude, would work great in a GaaS model that they want to chase. Offer true flight sim, and more casual arcade styles while keeping the physics alive, and keep pumping out missions, or make dogfighting, or aerial battles for MP, and you have a good solid and under-represented genre to draw people in.

If MS is listening to anything this gen, I hope more people ask for such a thing, and MS sees the potential there.

At the very least, they can license out their game tech and code for someone else to make it into something, or offer a modding tool to make it so others can do this easier.

To be honest, I dont think it's fair to say MSFT have always excelled at flight simulation, both 2004 and FSX required fairly hefty addons and tweaking of ini files to improve the physics in my experience. As for AI traffic, realistic weather, realistic ATC, realistic airports, global mesh and scenery, realistic lighting, MS were shit compared to the companies making the addons.

Other sims did the physics much better than Flight Sim over the last 10 years.

Totally agree, remember flight interceptor on my amiga 500, so hard taking off from the aircraft carrier and landing it on the aircraft carrier. Used to play that hours on end.

It’s one hell of a passenger jet. The attention to detail is impressive.

Yes, tried Emirates from Heathrow to Dubai. The only plane I managed to get a proper sleep haha. It is loaded with cool technology, like you can see the outside cameras on your inflight entertainment. And despite the 4 engines, it is still very quiet. Incredible!
