Gran Turismo 7: Can Polyphony Digital Reclaim Racing Sim King of the Hill?

Make no mistake: It has a lot of catching up to do. Gran Turismo’s sole release on PS4 was the highly divisive Gran Turismo Sport, an online-focused game that drastically cut its car-and-track lineup in exchange for FIA-certified racing. That is a huge deal, for it strengthens GT’s mark in real and virtual motorsports. Yet, GT Sport estranged long-time fans who saw the series as an opportunity to test-drive nearly everything the world had to offer, from everyday sedans to exotic supercars and, of course, the Vision GT concept models.

It never lost its crown in terms of driving feel, in car count yeah, but it never slipped on the most important thing about gt.

lodossrage1378d ago

The ONLY reason I didn't buy GT Sport was because of the online all the time even for single player aspect.

If GT7 allows me to play single player without having an online connection, then they WILL have my money.

And before people say "we're online all the time anyway", yes that's true. But me being online should be a CHOICE, not something FORCED on me.

The ONLY way I'll play an online only game is if it's free to play. I refuse to support paying for online only products. This is a personal preference regardless of any company.

IRetrouk1378d ago

That's a fair argument man, cant really dissagree with you there, it's not personally something that bothered me when playing but I understand it.

lodossrage1378d ago

What hurt was that I wanted GT Sport badly. I remember when the online all the time thing was just a rumor. I was like "please don't be true". So you can imagine how upset I was when the rumor turned out to be true.

But like I said, if GT7 isn't like that, Sony will have my money on day one.

I know we're all different, but there are certain practices I simply refuse to get behind even if they get popular. Like the way I'd never buy into psnow, stadia, or gamepass because I want ownership

IRetrouk1378d ago (Edited 1378d ago )

Like I say, i dont dissagree with your reasonings, I didn't really like it either but the reason kaz gave was so that there could be no cheating or messing with times etc, how true that's was I dont know but it made sense to me, fair play for sticking to your guns though.

Charal1377d ago (Edited 1377d ago )

And you missed one of the best GT, and one of the most refined multiplayer racing game for questionnable reason.

Plus, GT sport got a lot a free and substantial upgrades along the time.

It is also a huge knowledge base for car enthusiast with car history and museum section.

Well, you are free to go your way, but I think you are really missing something, not even talking about how refined car physic has become.

🤦‍♂️ 🤦‍♂️ 🤦‍♂️

So much damage control in one place.. Game launched with 170 cars 30 tracks if I remember correct.. Has been getting tremendous support since day 1 and the number of cars more than doubled, tracks multiplied by 3.. And yes, GT sports is online focused, but has the traditional single player campaign pretty early, for free..
The king of racers is here, and staying on top especially with the support the series is getting since GT5.

Ratchet751377d ago

I wholeheartedly agree with you.
Just like when you play sports games like Fifa or Nba2k. I hate how they try to force you going online by reminding you every time that you re not connected to their servers.😤😤

rainslacker1377d ago (Edited 1377d ago )

Driving in gt:s does feel really good. Great controls and physics. But the game itself feels kind of hollow as a gt title. I love a-spec, and the campaign mode they added in doesnt feel anything like that.

I think the online for SP was because the progression from SP could also be used for online competitive races. It's not only game that does this for that reason. It's reasonable they do it this way, and it's never bothered me much, but I'd still prefer the SP to stay offline, or at least not require it to play

FyBy1376d ago

Thats your choice. I dont mind if my saves are locally or only in cloud. If you plug out net cable every time you start a game, its strange, but some people do it.

I also dont understand, that ONLY way you play online game if its free to play. So you dont want to pay developers for the game? They develop very fine game, which they supported free for many years.

Whats the problem man? You afraid of being online? What do you do here on n4g then?

And if only reason to not to buy gts was afraid of being online....thats really said and Im sorry for you. You missed great game.

Ok Fyby, you seem to be missing the point here. This has nothing to do with "me not wanting to pay the developers". If I BUY a packaged product, I should have the option to play OFFLINE if I decide that. I don't care how fine or great a game is, if I'm FORCED to play it online for SINGLE PLAYER after I ALREADY pay for it, then it's not worth it to me. Therefore I won't buy it.

The reason I accept it with free to play games is that I'm not paying any upfront cost. So I don't complain about putting money into that.

It has nothing to do with "being afraid to be online". You don't even make sense with that comment. SINGLE player games that I PAY an UPFRONT cost for being online is unacceptable for me.

What you don't realize Fyby, is that gaming is in the dire state it's in BECAUSE people like you slowly, methodically accept things you shouldn't. Then complain when it's too late and becomes commmonplace.

GT is a great sim for sure, the best part is that Forza Motorsports and GT keep pushing each other. There are things in each game I wish was in the other.

GT is king because it really developed the realistic racing sim genre. Like any king in entertainment people or products come along, but the king is still the king. Elvis is the King of Rock, Michael Jackson King of Pop. That doesn't mean others don't come along and be very successful and even be better then the king. But, to me GT will always be king of realistic racing sims.

yeahokwhatever1372d ago

man tell me which magical sim this is because I've got just about everything Steam offers and there's nothing like GT there.

How can you reclaim something you never lost? GT was, is and will be the biggest racing sim available on PlayStation. It's sales are reaching closer to 100 million yet it has to reclaim something? GT sports sold better than any forza so what exactly is there to reclaim? PD are great at post launch free support, GT sports got so much free content post launch without requiring a season pass

DarXyde1377d ago

I think it greatly depends on what your indicators are. Sales? Aggregate score? Realism? Visuals? Content? FIA certification status? A combination of all of those?

There are not really any universal indicators for measuring that King of racing sims status. On some level, you can make an argument for Forza or Assetto Corsa. In my opinion, you can't really compare them because Gran Turismo has always appealed to a wider set of skills. Like there's a feeling of difference between them that makes it hard to compare. There is a reason two of those games are identified as racing sims and one is known as a driving sim.

neutralgamer19921377d ago

Its a combination of everything and the impact of this one IP

mandingo1377d ago

Forza is definitely the better game imo but GT is cool too. Same with Pcars

dumahim1377d ago

Yeah, and Turn 10 ended support for FM7 really early even when there were broken achievements that can't be acquired now. Been broken for about 2 years now.

yeahokwhatever1372d ago

GT as a series is excellent. GT:Sport was a mistake. If it wasn't, we wouldn't be seeing quote after quote from Polyphony about how GT7 is going to be more like the ones before Sport. That said, out of all of the racing games this gen on PC and PS4, GT:Sport is the best. Drivceclub a close second.

neutralgamer19921371d ago (Edited 1371d ago )

Sports was something different I guess that PD wanted to make and now they are going back to its original roots. It sold quite well I think PD might have learned a lot from this when it comes to future GT games online features

it is still the best sim imo. GT Sport looks incredible on the ps4 pro. can only imagine what GT7 will look like on ps5.

Bruh1377d ago

You've already seen it, it looks like GT Sport with Ray Traced Reflections and a dynamic weather and time system

Edgelordsupreme1377d ago

hopefully the LoD shift is better, I found it very distractinc.

Donnie811377d ago

No they can’t. They take forever to make a game then when they put one out it’s very mediocre. Gt sport was a joke at launch. I have zero faith they can compete with project cars much less forza . But I’m willing to admit if I’m wrong so let’s see what they can do

DarkZane1377d ago

It's actually the opposite. Forza release too often and it's literally the same game everytime with almost no changes.

GT has always been king. Forza was nothing but a second rate replacement because there was no proper GT this gen.

Forza is trash but at least we got the Forza Horizon spinoff out of it.

Donnie811377d ago

Gt lost it crown face it. Forza is better and most people agree but if u don’t that’s ok. Thanks for ur input. Hope u are doing well !

IRetrouk1377d ago (Edited 1377d ago )

most people agree forza is better? Really? So why has motorsport failed to sell? If everyone knows its better why is motorsports sales less and less each release?

Christopher1376d ago

@Donnie81: GT sells more than Forza Motorsport, though. How is that most people agree? You mean review scores? Is that "most people"?

IRetrouk1377d ago (Edited 1377d ago )

2 games out of 7 took them longer than normal, the first took 5 years to make and so did gt5, the rest got normal dev time.

Right now, both forza and gts new games have been in development for the same time, guess which one has shown real gameplay and which has shown only in engine stuff so far?

gt sport mediocure? In what way?

A joke at launch? But it came with everything they said it would, no made up hype, no lies, just an online focused sim racer,(that they also built a brand new engine for), they even added in single player events(that were not even planned for the game) and tons of dlc for free.

Project cars... can't be compared to forza let alone gt lol.

Donnie811377d ago

Project card two is better than gt sport don’t even pretend it’s not .

IRetrouk1377d ago

No its not, I own the game, its horrible with a controller and pales next to sport with a wheel, not even getting into the physics or effects or car models....

PlayStation is killing it with the exclusives this year. Exclusive wise, what has xbox released this year?

VersusDMC37d ago

They won't complain about Microsoft not releasing games here but put all their effort into saying that only first party counts. Games like Rebirth and Grandblue Relink don't count. Games published by Sony like Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin don't count because Sony don't own the studios.

It's some narrative building so for when Hellblade 2 come out they can say, seemingly without shame, that Microsoft is actually releasing first party games this year. And claim victory.🙃

Chevalier37d ago

Weird 1st party games didn't matter when Xbox had so little, but, now they're important again? Guess Ark 3, Stalker 2 don't count any more?

KyRo37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

ARK 3 doesn't exist and it's just a timed exclusive. It's also a game that a majority of the ARK player base doesn't want as it's a massive deviation from what people like about the original game

Abnor_Mal37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Honestly to me it doesn’t matter what they say, they are just finally getting a chance to say all the things PS fan(boy)s were saying to them for the past few years. Let them get that, they deserve a “win” for a change.

The new narrative is that suddenly first party games matter again when awhile ago they didn’t, but that was because they were struggling with the same three games with the occasional fourth or fifth. That games should be everywhere on all platforms since that’s whats happening to theirs. The consoles don’t matter just the ability to play anywhere. Whatever Xbox is doing Sony will soon follow.

They’re not moving the goalpost anymore, but rather just moving the whole damn stadium.

jwillj2k437d ago

Only a incel would care about who published what and who owns who.

If it’s not on the other consoles it’s an exclusive.

Killing what? Where are the 1st party games??
Stellar Blade and FF7 is what I’m seeing this year.. so shallow!!!!

andy8537d ago

Doesn't really matter as long as they're great games. Baffles me why people put an emphasis on 1st party. They're still games you can't play anywhere else this year

Cacabunga36d ago

Andy

PS brand is my favorite because of their stellar first party software.. currently I see absolutely nothing to go crazy for..

CS736d ago

Nonsense.

PS1 and PS2 was built on great third party exclusives like FF, MGS, GTA & Tekken.

raWfodog37d ago

Of course I love the games I’ve played from PS but I don’t believe we need to limit it to ‘exclusive’ to acknowledge that Xbox will be releasing some good games this year also. In that same vein, I believe that Xbox diehards shouldn’t limit their acknowledgment of good PS games to 1st party. There are plenty of good games to go around for everybody.

Tacoboto37d ago

This is a Playstation article about Playstation games and your comment is about Xbox. Can't you just celebrate what PS has without dragging this into console war BS?

ChasterMies37d ago

I don’t think Microsoft is releasing games exclusively on Xbox anymore. They have some timed exclusives that release on Xbox first.

Returnal, Astro Bot, and Ratchet made having it since day one worth it.

GT7 free updates and Spiderman 2 and others at 60fps have made this last year more than okay.

But yeah, it’s been dry lately. BG3 and third party have made great filler, but we ready for that SOCOM or Killzone announcement and some more 1st party goodness. Crossing fingers for Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement this summer.

Didn’t know Helldivers was exclusive! Wtf is going on at Xbox that they can’t get these games, series s strikes again.

SonyStyled37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Sony owns the Helldivers IP. The first was a PS3/Vita/PC game. It was never an Xbox game that they could ‘get’ a decade ago. I’m not sure what the upset is with Xbox here

CS736d ago

Lol, how do you ignore Rebirth one of the best games ever made?

anast37d ago

Looks like they are on par with the previous gens. Solid games all around. Interestingly enough, we can't say they released a bad game yet this gen. Unlike the Quiet Man dustup.
