BY JOHN: There are lots of commercially successful games that are, to put it mildly, not very good. Whether they launch broken, or they’re just a cookie-cutter version of another title, some games just hit the jackpot when it comes to sales numbers.
But, what about those games that are well worth playing but don’t sell well? It can be too easy to miss a great gaming experience just because it wasn’t a commercial smash hit, despite having a strong story or interesting gameplay mechanics. This can be due to poor marketing, the timing not being right in the market or dozens of other reasons.
Here are ten games that flopped commercially but are well worth checking out.
Prey shouldn't have been connected to the original, they should've changed the name. It looked good and had decent exploration but it was way too long and the ending was trash. Definitely gets more praise in the comments than it should.
I actually hated Prey after playing the demo, for me, it felt so bad to play, I agree that it gets more praise than it deserves. Most of this list is fine though, there are some really good games on there.
I couldn't get on with Prey either, sounded great on paper but I didn't enjoy it at all. I don't think I like Arkane, tried to get into Dishonored years before and it left me cold.
Did you play it on ps4/xbone? If so, yeah, it played terribly on those machines. 90 second load times, horrible input lag.
I couldnt enjoy the game until it got updated for Series X
I really want to like Prey. I've gone back to it a few times on my Steam Deck but I don't know, I just can't get into it. Mind you, I'm not the biggest fan of immersive sims

Actually it was PS4, I don't recall anyone mentioning that it was console specific at the time though.
I liked Prey (2017), but I think the original Prey was more polished and arguably better game of the two. If Bethesda had been so cheap, Prey (2017) could have trade marked as “Nightmare on Talos” or “Typhon “.

I really liked prey, but I'll add I never finished. Dishonored, was a borefest for me I couldn't get into it with multiple times of trying.
The ORIGINAL Prey sequel looked dope as F. I would have loved to have played that instead of what we got.
I couldn’t get into Prey when I played it. I own it so I’ll try again someday.
I think the issue with Prey is how the media were infatuated with everything done by Arkane Studio and the Dishonored Universe.
For some reason they need to remind us all the time that Dishonored is among the best games and everything related to that suddenly becomes near perfection.

Dishonored 1 is incredible. The 2nd is pretty darn good too ...
All their other games have been average to bad.
Idk if I agree, I never really hear Dishonoured being talked about a lot, I think the amount of attention Deathloop got was fine for what it was, then again, I never really cared that much for Arkane Studio's games.
I think the problem was releasing at the same time as another great racer, Split Second, no doubt the cannibalised each others potential sales.
Both great games but I think I prefer Split Second, just about!!

i agree though I don't have a ps5 but i will activate this when the prices get out of apple range.
Well lets hope its soon, because you never know when the game will leave psplus.
I don't think it is fair to compare the PS5 to apple prices since an iphone hasn't been at $499 since the original iphone launched.
One thing I can say at your benefit though is that in gaming then longer you wait to buy, the better the deal, though if you wait too long your backlog will get out of control.
Rift Apart is the best chill game I've played this gen.
System seller on PS Plus is a huge win.

A huge score for those of us that didn't just buy it literally one day ago and it's on the way now :'(
But I guess it's good to own it, as well! And I don't think I want to get PlayStation Plus right now, so it's not a huge loss. But it is still a little saddening.
I got my PS5 today, actually! Been wanting to play Rift Apart for so long. And I played Astro's Playroom at a friend's house, and that was when I was like, "I NEED THIS." Such a fun little game with so many wonderful references to Playstation stuff!
Anyways.
You could just re-sell your copy that is coming in the mail. But it's up to you. Rift Apart is so damn good. It blew my mind how good it looks and plays.
I hope you love it, dude. Nothing beats a shiny new console, and the PS5 is 👌 May I recommend Returnal, challenging but not Soulsborne-level challenging, and extremely good making use of those new haptics you're going to be playing around with.
Hey I'm a relatively new PS5 owner here, but how does this new PS Plus system work? So if I go in at the Premium level for a month, it would mean I can play Horizon 2 and Ratchet & Clank just like that, right?
Yea, you don't even need to sub Premium if those are the 2 games you're after, they're included on PS Plus Extra.
Premium just adds the legacy library of PS1, PS2, PS3 titles that are on the service.
Played and platinumed Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart at launch. Loved it so much. 9/10

PS VR2 is actually really awesome man. I have one. It's only new, so maybe I will wait for Bus Simulator 21 to get a VR update then. Judging by that video, the game looks fun in VR

I’m on the highest tier but the only things I gravitate toward are the two monthly games.
It was only recently that I found how to properly browse the PS+ section on the dashboard and there’s a ridiculous amount of high quality content on there.
I own a good amount of them either physical or digital but still a great selection.
Yup. Ps extra is cheaper than gamepass ultimate as well...until those quality Xbox 1st party start actually kicking in ps+ is the most affordable and highest quality service.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin Is fantastic, I can't recommend it highly enough.
Even though you have never heard of it it went on to sell well over a million copies.

With the overarching rise of popularity of many action titles, the stealth genre has taken a hit, both in quality and quantity.
I always hated stealth in games. There is nothing worse for me than forced stealth sections where being discovered equals instant failure.
I like stealth dishonored and thief but at least they have a option for people that don't.
I love stealth games. But there are a few games that let you choose how to handle those situation. TLoU was great at. that.
It seems like "every" game has a stealth section and most games have the option. It has been assimilated not killed.
I’m surprised more MGSV mechanics aren’t copied to improve other stealth games.

Yeah, as much as I didn't like that MGS V's focus was on gameplay over story. I do have to admit that the gameplay and mechanics are immaculate.
