New Tomb Raider Sales Lead on PlayStation 3

Sales of Eidos' Tomb Raider: Underworld are strongest on the PlayStation 3, with 51 per cent of all units sold in its first week of release on Sony's home console.

The Xbox 360 accounted for 34 per cent of sales, with the remaining sales made up of Wii, PC and DS SKUs.

Cutting game content to use in later DLC is pathetic and since great developers like Naughty Dog didn't do this with Uncharted, Eidos will not be getting my money despite the fact that I own both systems and could buy it on the 360. Low balling like they do to the gaming community by backing MS's cheap shots at DLC exclusivity makes me an unhappy camper and I just cannot support it when there are other greater games on the market. I will just play through Uncharted again if I want my cave scampering fix met.

The problem with the TR DLC is the same that GTA4's DLC faces: it's not free. The fact that you picked the 360 version over the PS3 doesn't automatically guarantee you the DLC. You already shelved out 60$ for the game and you still have to pay an extra 10$ for the DLC. Most people aren't willing to do so.

Anyway, I just can't wait for the comparison videos stating how superior the 360 version is (/sarcasm).

even though i think Uncharted trounces Tomb Raider, i'm no PS3 fanboy. still, i do think it's rather funny how Microsoft basically paid Eidos to slap PS3 owners in the face, and now it's all come back to bite the both of them in the butt. i simply am not a fan of either of the big three throwing around cash to beat the competition, at least not the way Microsoft has done it. the money they paid for this and the GTA IV dlc could've easily went into funding one of their in-house studios. i'm sure Eidos and Rockstar would've made their dlc multiplatform, until Microsoft offered cash to make it exclusive.

That does seem hard to believe. I got the 360 version. I just usually get, scratch that, always get multi-platform games on the 360. Most often they look/play better. I didn't do the research on this one though. It seemed pretty cool looking on the demo. As for DLC, hmmm. I don't usually get that kind of thing if it costs money, especially if I haven't gotten to the point in the game where it'd make any difference. I will probably download GTA4 content though. It looks pretty different than the rest of the game.

And the DLC that the 360 is getting: I was always thinking that it was really strange that Eidos would give the 360 something by request and never even OFFER to give Sony anything. Yet, this happens. Now, how much you want to bet Sony's getting those offers NOW (or at least once the guys that matter see this)?

Microsoft went to Eidos and asked them to add the levels for the 360 exclusively. The game was finished and the same on both platforms. Microsoft gave Eidos money and asked them to make a couple more levels. Eidos didn't go to Microsoft and they won't go to Sony.

How did you know Underworld was going to flop or not be as good as uncharted? Uncharted came out last year and that would have given the Underworld dev team plenty of time. Uncharted is a good great, but it was far from flawless. The voice animations, graphics, and voice overs were great but the combat aspects were dismal.

PS3 owners, have jobs to afford the better tech, therefore are older and have been with Tomb Raider since PSX.

360 owners, are split. There are the guys that have owned the system when it was more expensive at launch. They are the older gamers with jobs and know who Lara is.
And then the second half are the kids that know enough about tech to want an HD console (you know that ones that scream at you on XBox live) but a PS3 is still too expensive for their meagre allowances. They have probably heard of Lara, but probably don't know enough to warrant buying the game.

Wii owners - They are split too. There are the children that have no idea who Lara Croft is, but they know who Spongbob is, and what Bratz and Petz are.
And then there are the adults that bought the Wii as an interactive board game to bring out at parties. They know who Lara is because they've seen Angelina Jolie play Tomb Raider, but they've never played the game before as the Wii is their first console and is reserved for getting "fit" and fooling around when drunk.

The biggest difference is the dynamic shadows. The PS3 version shows it flickering and moving. While the 360's version is just there flat and not doing anything.

In the boat scene there's more jaggies on the 360 version. That one is hard to say if the PS3 has more anti-aliasing or just running in a lower resolution.

As far as textures goes, they are pretty much equal.

None if it is really "game breaking" but the lack of dynamic shadows on the 360 could ruin some of the immersion feeling.

It's really a small advantage. But you know, 360 folks like to slap these kinds of things in PS3 owner's faces with "ohhhh we get the superior multiplatform games!" so surprisingly this is like a big slap to their faces.

Why does MS seem to think that adding exclusive DLC to a multi-platform game is the main determining factor in gaining the most sales for the 360 version over other versions? Do they honestly think that a majority of everyone buys into all this DLC? Well I don't think that many gamers do. Most gamers would just rather buy a game that interests them, play it, enjoy it, complete it and then go on ahead and buy a next different game instead of wasting more money on DLC on the same game. I dont even know of any of my gamer friends that regularly buy DLC, they just complete the original game and go out and buy new games. Look at the classic situation of GTA 4. MS thought that by securing exclusive content, the 360 version of GTA 4 would dominate sales figures over the PS3 version. It turn out not to be true (GTA 4 actually ended selling more on the PS3 worldwide), and it also turns out that most gamers dont even care for GTA 4 DLC anymore, due in part to being that many gamers now view GTA 4 in general as quite a big letdown. Now MS plans to release this GTA 4 DLC soon, and from what I can see it does not look that great or exciting. Biker gang theme? No thanks. So MS thinks this Tomb Raider exculsive DLC is gonna sway sales of the game their way to the 360. First signs is that it selling more on the PS3 and not making a difference and secondly newsflash - Tomb Raider may still be good but everyone knows it's kinda played out now, there is a new king in town for this type of game and it goes by the name of Unchartered. Unchartered is a much better game than the Tomb Raider series and hopefully part 2 will be a vast improvement over an already excellent title. Respect to Eidos you managed to get a fat paycheck and f*ck MS in the @ss at the same time. MS enjoy your DLC.

None of which offers Valkyria Chronicles and LBP. Valkyria Chronicles was a serious sleeper hit for me. I was not interested in the least, but after actually hearing about it everywhere I jumped into it. And man it's the most refreshing game next to LBP that I've played this generation.

My personal views on this issue of DLC is that it needs to be compelling, not something held from the disc, advertised in detail well in advance of actual luanch day for a given game...and lastly, the price of DLC needs to either be free or no more than $5-6.

In this situation with stronger PS3 sales...you can also see other issues. Yes, this series originated on PS platform and was extremely successful in it's day. Also, the PS3 version seems to be better...dynamic shadows not present in the 360 version hurts this title. (though only with the hardcore fanbase that reads reviews online and checks the forums)

So was this a bad move by MS? More like poorly executed advertsing and no clear understanding of what DLC is going to be beyond the obvious. With GTA4...again, massively stupid of MS not to attach a deadline to the content. With the obvious payed off reviews for both systems - 10's this game isn't...gamer's have moved on.

Here's the recipe for success when it comes to DLC - have the content available one the day of purchase, at a cost of FREE...and gamers WILL flock to your version of a given title, guranteed. Of course the game will need to be good to begin with.

i played this game on the PC.... and i love it, simply cause its remember me on the first tomb raider and thats how it just musst be. Not to many other things... just lara, the mystery and beautiful tombs and the lust to accomplish all this.

Given the popularity and rave reviews Left4Dead is getting (360 exclusive), Gears 2 (360 Exclusive) and COD:WaW all out just prior to this game...I am guessing many 360 owners had to make a choice of this game or the others given the current economic climate worldwide.

I am sure sales will level out more over time, but for sure MS has to be a bit disappointed in the sales. I mean this is a good staple game for Europe & the U.K. hence why MS decided to invest in the DLC.

I am going to give it a whirl, but not anytime soon. Too many other better games out on the 360 at the moment.

You act like everyone has money to burn on games. 360 has two huge exclusives that just came out in November. Both those games are turning into "must buy" games that 360 owners ARE buying up. PS3 had two big releases: LBP and Resistance 2 but LBP isn't setting the sales charts a blaze and I haven't heard too many blips on Resistance 2 sales (although I imagine they are fairly strong).

Couple that with Tomb Raider being a series that has always had a strong following in Europe (Where the PS3 is very strong) and you can see how the sales figures would slant toward the PS3.

I also freely admit that MS is undoubtedly not happy about this as I think they felt they could grab back some market share in Europe with this and its just not doing it.

Just showed 360 owners had time to save all year to buy those tow games. LOL. (and the 3rd, for the people with more money).

But hey, I am cheap, too. Got R2, and LBP and EndWar. And I thought that's where it would end. But I got a great deal on Motorstorm PR for $25 (!coupon), and then Grid for $25 again, and when I thought it was over again, they teased me into getting FarCry2 - again, $24.98 (Black Friday special). Was hard not to spend the cash.

Don't know where that'll leave me with Tomb Raider, though. I was about boycotting Eidos, but now that I see it looks great, I am tempted getting it. Maybe, after I'm done with Fallout3. No games, wah ? I'd say, It sold rather OK if you put all those games up here and the circumstance, that Eidos pissed of PS3 users

I'm a BIG Tomb Raider fan! I even bought that piece of crap "angel of darkness"! But, I'm not buying this one because of the "exclusivity" of the 360 dlc. I own both consoles but, i'm used to playing it on my Playstation. It will be a rent from me for sure!

It looks like Eidos better wise up and see Playstation gamers are their main supporters. Even if Microsoft paid them for exclusive DLC it doesn't mean they can't make other DLC for free for the PS3 version. Show some appreciation Eidos.

I didn't buy Tomb Raider. I might later but this big review fiasco has me wondering if the good reviews are real or paid for so I'll wait. At least see what gamers say about this game.

Since Tomb Raider became a real hit on the Playstation platform, I'm guessing that more PS3 owners are more familiar with the Tomb Raider franchise.

However, it is kind of surprising to see that the PS3 version of a multiplatform game is leading sales over the 360 version by over half... maybe this will make more 3rd party developers pay attention to the PS3.

Microsoft wastes their money on exclusive DLC again. If few Xbox 360 owners are even buying the game, then obviously even fewer people are going to buy the DLC.

360 owners are playing Gears of War 2, Fable 2, superior versions of all the recent multiplats (Fallout 3 is a good example), enjoying all the goodies from the NXE all the while Sony owners (sux that I am one) are renting games like LBP and R2, sitting there waiting for Home and circle jerkin it to Lara Croft and the thought/hope that Sony might actually care for them, tell the truth and not be out for their money like the oh-so evil MS.

I've only ever played 1 tomb raider game,, and that was enough fot me to warrent to never play the series again. angel of darkness was horrrible.. then i played uncharted , that was the nail in the coffin for me for the TR series

If your basing your judgement on the whole series from just that one game it's just wrong. And almost like saying DMC series sucks cause i only played DMC2. If you are interested in being put into huge beautiful environments to explore atleast rent it if you have the time. Think Soul Reaver 1+2 and Defiance exploration x50 minus the whole vampire setting. If you enjoyed Uncharted but wanted more to explore+puzzles and less gunplay. Graphics are pretty damn good to boot.

Tomb Raider entered the UK chart at #14 (sold like what 8,000 copies) and now Sony Fanboys declared victory. A week ago you guys were bashing the game and calling it a failure and what not and now just because it did something descent for the PS3, it makes your feel better. We all know how well LBP sold compared to Fable 2. Fable just destroyed it. Also, the PS3 can only dream of having a game that sells as much as GeOW2.
