Microsoft Renews Fable Trademark Amid Sequel Rumours

Microsoft has applied to renew its Fable trademark as rumours of a sequel to Lionhead's RPG franchise continue to swirl. The renewed trademark from Microsoft suggests that the studio has an "intent to use" the IP.

VenomUK1399d ago (Edited 1399d ago )

This is the biggest open secret for next-gen, and one that I'm happy about! I really want to go back to a new single-player Fable game and how cool would it be if it's ready as a launch title.

NeoGamer2321399d ago

Right now I am on the fence about buying next gen consoles day one. But, a solid showing of Halo and Fable with both being at launch would change that.

But, given that we have seen nothing officially on the next Fable game, I don't see how it comes out at launch.

ColdSin1398d ago

I don't believe it will be a launch title. It may be a 2021 title.

Dudeson1399d ago (Edited 1399d ago )

I remember getting a XBOX 360, next to my ps3, just for fable 2. I'm sticking with ps5 this round but a new fable that's also for pc would be a small dream come true.

Lore1399d ago

If true Sony should rethink their portfolio strategy. They have nothing to compete with this on the rpg front.

Imortus_san1399d ago

No RPG, RTS, Tactics, Open World Racing, 2D Platform, 2D Shootem Up, 2D person Shoot Up, FPS, and many more.

timotim1399d ago

Thats because all Sony has been producing this generation is 3D person action games with bow and arrows and platforming elements.

King_Noctis1399d ago

They do have "exclusive third person action adventure story driven cinematic games" though.

RamRod881399d ago

With playground, Obsidian, InXile, and Undead Labs, Xbox is going to be the console to own next gen for RPGs.

CaptainHenry9161399d ago (Edited 1399d ago )

It's strange because most Xbox fans like FPS and third person shooters. But I do agree with you.

RamRod881399d ago

Didn't Fable, KoTor, Mass Effect and other RPG sell great on the Xbox platform. What about Fallout, witcher, Elder scrolls? Xbox owners love RPGs. Stop generalizing all Xbox fans. I could say majority of Sony fans play CoD and Fortnite, but does you do or every Sony fan? Nah

King_Noctis1399d ago

"It's strange because most Xbox fans like FPS and third person shooters. But I do agree with you."

So why is CoD constantly the top selling game for the PS4 as well?

CaptainHenry9161399d ago

As long as CD project red keeps making RPGs Sony should be fine. Sony still has JRPGs from second and third party developers.

Lore1399d ago

That’s the problem. You can’t continue to rely on third party rpg’s. It’s unsustainable. Microsoft planned this out out correctly for once

CaptainHenry9161399d ago

They do have horizon zero dawn. One of the best RPGs this generation

RazzerRedux1399d ago

Disagree. Horizon Zero Dawn is a superb RPG.

Lore1398d ago

Don’t know if that was sarcasm but anyone that believes HZD is an rpg doesn’t play many video games

RazzerRedux1398d ago (Edited 1398d ago )

lol....what are you talking about? Horizon Zero Dawn is just as much as an action RPG as Fable.

"Horizon Zero Dawn is a PS4-exclusive action role playing game developed by Guerrilla Games, creators of the Killzone franchise."
https://www.metacritic.com/...

Horizon Zero Dawn is an action role-playing game developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

Horizon Zero Dawn, an exhilarating new action role playing game exclusively for the PlayStation 4 system, developed by the award winning Guerrilla Games, creatos of PlayStation's venerated Killzone franchise. As Horizon Zero Dawn's main protagonist Aloy, a skilled hunter, explore a vibrant and lush world inhabited by mysterious mechanized creatures.
https://www.igdb.com/games/...

Seems everyone but you sees HZD for what it really is: an action RPG.

Lore1398d ago

Sorry man, read in between the lines. It’s marketing. Anyone can slap a leveling system on a game with simplistic progression and minimal equipment to purchase (but none to salvage from chests/etc.), and call it a “role-playing game.” Maybe you should play them both back to back before making your claim, so you can be more educated on the topic. I mean this with all do respect

RazzerRedux1398d ago (Edited 1398d ago )

Uh....I've played both thoroughly, thanks. Has nothing to do with my knowledge of either game. Sounds like you just want to phrase this so you can say MS has no competition from Sony in the genre of RPG. Sorry, but they certainly do.

"so you can be more educated on the topic. I mean this with all do respect"

You are not the authority on what is or isn't a RPG. You have an opinion that is at odds with most and that is fine, but you need to stop acting like it is a fact. It just isn't. Just your minority opinion on the matter.

Lore1398d ago

Again, you sound uneducated, further proving my point. Should have done research on me to know that I never praise microsoft, except in regards to their UI on xone compared to ps4 - and yes the topic of UI is definitely an opinion of mine, which I would not be the authority of.

Now on the subject of rpg’s, you can say all you want I’m no authority, athough I am correct. The general consensus is that people love Horizon as a game. Okay no problem. However if anyone with a minimal - average gaming IQ was polled to answer what they rate it as an rpg and then put it up against 50 true rpg’s, it would come near the bottom of the list if not dead last. It’s alright man some people are simply delusional and try to compare educated logic and facts to try and pass it off as “opinion” from the other party when they’re unaware, such as you did

And good luck trying to convince anyone other than yourself that you’ve thoroughly played both titles. I just finished both and can tell you one is an rpg, and the other is an action/adventure title with “thrown in” light-rpg mechanics. When I say light, I mean 7 year old light.

Good day to you though man lol

RazzerRedux1398d ago

"Again, you sound uneducated"

And yet I am not. Your argument seems to consist of "I'm right cuz I say I'm right and if you disagree then you are just not smart". Frankly, that's idiotic.

"Okay no problem. However if anyone with a minimal - average gaming IQ was polled to answer what they rate it as an rpg and then put it up against 50 true rpg’s, it would come near the bottom of the list if not dead last."

Again...this argument from a position of authority. It is just bullshit. You are not making a valid point at all. All about this perception YOU have over who is educated and who is not. Who has a "higher gaming IQ" and who doesn't. Yeah....I'm sure everyone who had the same opinion as you would rank every game as you see it. And fact is that even if you rank HZD last on the list of RPGs...you've just admitted it is, in fact, an RPG.

"Using an alleged authority as evidence in your argument when the authority is not really an authority (in this case, you) on the facts relevant to the argument. As the audience, allowing an irrelevant authority to add credibility to the claim being made.'
https://www.logicallyfallac...

"And good luck trying to convince anyone other than yourself that you’ve thoroughly played both titles."

lol...well, I played enough to have bought every piece of property in the game including Cemetery mansion. In HZD, I have a platinum trophy. So there it is. You've made bullshit assumptions of your own, now haven't you?

"I just finished both"

lol....really? What an extraordinary and convenient coincidence. lol

"and can tell you one is an rpg, and the other is an action/adventure title with “thrown in” light-rpg mechanics. "

Your opinion. A concept you cannot seem to grasp. I found HZD to be very rich in RPG mechanics. The skill system was well-thought out and gives the ability to unlock some very cool abilities. The weapon system, while not heavy in looting, is great especially in ranged but all have good about of optional buffs to apply. Armor comes in a variety of sets and can be modified for resistance to selected attacks and potions can do the same. These are all RPG mechanics. No, this isn't a system as rich as Divinity: OS or Pathfinder, but neither is Fable and to suggest Fable is leagues beyond HZD is silly. But that is my opinion.

And what I just did was provide an actual argument for my position. You should try it sometime.

Lore1398d ago

Lol. The statements you’re trying to make showcase your surface level understanding of what we’re discussing.

Also your link to alleged authority does not apply because if we were in a professional setting where you could be informed properly you would see that the evidence of fact supports my claim. It would require ample time to be explained to those who may be confused. No one’s spitballing, it’s just how you’re perceiving my position.

Again, good luck to you and enjoy your gaming

RazzerRedux1398d ago

"The statements you’re trying to make showcase your surface level understanding of what we’re discussing."

And your statements showcase absolutely no understanding at all because you've made zero arguments other than insulting the intelligence of the person you disagree with. You are not discussing RPGs. lol....you are discussing me. It is kind of hilarious.

"Also your link to alleged authority does not apply because if we were in a professional setting where you could be informed properly you would see that the evidence of fact supports my claim. "

lol....yeah, you just try your bullshit in a professional setting. I'm in one every day and your nonsense wouldn't fly for a minute. And your opinion about HZD is not fact. Neither is mine. The difference I understand this. You....well, lol.

Please a single player Fable is all I want from Xbox.

chiefJohn1171399d ago

I grew up PS and hated the OG Xbox (that damn controller) one of my friends had all the game consoles and picked up fable 2. I seen him play it then he let me. I was hooked. After trying Halo CE on PC and now Fable 2 plus the PS3 being expensive.....I knew what I had to do. For me last gen had 3 console sellers (for me) and that was Halo 3, Fable 2 and Super smash bro brawl which I play over his house too. I couldn't live without those 3.
Hopefully Fable can return to it's glory days of 1 and 2. 3 was absolutely trash. I literally turn the console off after you fart in that dudes face lol.

Fable – What the Heck is Going On?

Announced in 2020, Playground Games' open-world action RPG has seen sporadic updates and departures but still no release date.

PhillyDonJawn11d ago

I expect it to be released by 2026

Sonic188111d ago (Edited 11d ago )

I expect it to release by the time the next Xbox releases. Can that be 2026? Sure

DOMination-11d ago

You could say the same for any number of games that were stupidly announced during pre-production. Elder Scrolls 6 & Perfect Dark are current examples, Blade is another recent one and in the past Mass Effect Andromeda and Cyberpunk 2077 come to mind.

I don't think this game is in any trouble. For a start, Playground Games are one of the few under MS Studios that actually have a track record of delivering on time and with quality. We got a trailer last year and I'd fully expect there to be something more substantial at the next showcase in the summer.

No dramas here - just another victim of Microsoft's incompetence. They simply had to announce several games way too early because they had nothing else to talk about.

Michiel198911d ago

how are they a victim when they are clearly being given enough time? They haven't set any release date, haven't had to show any trailers, how is that being a victim? You even say yourself that you think it's not in trouble.

MrBaskerville11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

TESVI was mostly announced to stop people from asking. Like how they gave us a roadmap of first Starfield, then TES then Fallout. So people keep asking whether they'll do another one or not.

But Fable and Perfect Dark was defineately too early.

Tody_ZA11d ago

The same thing that happens to any project when you announce it far too early. Perfect Dark, Fable, The Elder Scrolls 6, Star Wars KOTOR Remake...you actually have to, I don't know, make the game?

I'm fairly confident this game will see the light of day, as Playground have released 5 Forza games of quality and on schedule. Think it was just revealed too early.

Charlieboy33310d ago

The only issue I see is that, as you mentioned, they have only done Forza games. An RPG is completely different requiring completely different facets.

Whole new different open world....not just tracks. Character designs and animations, dialogue, combat systems, quest systems, equipment and inventory managment....the list is very long and none of it falls under their previous experience.

Even with assistance from other studios I believe they are still far off from delivering a complete version of this game.

Baldur's Gate 3 Producer Has Joined Fable Developer Playground Games

Baldur's Gate 3 producer Ryan Clark, who worked at Larian Studios for four years, has joined Fable developer Playground Games

Xbox is definitely the house of RPGs and it´s getting bigger and better by the day!

Fable will be fantastic!

Marcus Fenix215d ago

I hope to see the following at Microsoft’s June games showcase:

Contraband (3rd party exclusive)
ID Software
Machine Games
The Coalition
Playground
Ninja Theory
The Initiative
Double Fine
Rare

Im sure we won’t see all these studio’s projects but at least 5 of them would be nice.

Sciurus_vulgaris215d ago

I’m surprised Gears 6 hasn’t been announced by the Coalition as of yet. Gears 5 released 4 years and the Coalitions hasn’t another AAA title since then, excluding the co-developed Gears Tactics.

Lightning77215d ago (Edited 215d ago )

Todd hinted at Indiana Jones being at next year's E3.

I heard Contraband is going through some sorta rework. I don't really have much hope for that game at this point in time.

Btw Gears 6 is in full development they took time away to learn Unreal Engine 5. Yeah... If we're going off of Immortals Of Aveum performance. They have allot of work ahead of them.

GhostScholar215d ago

I’m with you, but you had to know that comment wouldn’t be popular here lol

Sonic1881215d ago

The house of western RPGs. There, I fixed it for you

Crows90215d ago (Edited 215d ago )

Not even accurate though. They haven't made a single RPG yet. Starfield is barely an RPG as it is...there's no role picking unlike in elder scrolls games...especially the older ones. No skills...no attributes...just perks.

Imagine baldurs gate 3 where all you get to pick are feats.

Sonic1881215d ago (Edited 215d ago )

Starfield was probably the worse RPG from Bethesda. Especially when it comes to review scores on Steam

https://www.gamespot.com/ar...

https://youtu.be/NuJumZT7Kt...

darthv72214d ago

All games are RPG if you think about it. You play the role of a character and do the stuff required to win the game.

Technically speaking.

Zeref215d ago (Edited 215d ago )

I couldn't be happier about that. I heard even Infinity Ward is working on an RPG. I am hyped af to see what they can do outside of CoD!

Crows90215d ago

What new RPGs has Xbox made recently?

jjb1981215d ago

I played the Fable Legends closed beta and actually kinda liked it. It sucks that it was canceled. I'm definitely looking forward to the new Fable.

Crows90215d ago

So it could have been really good. They lacked vision for the end product.

Barlos214d ago (Edited 214d ago )

Absolutely. I loved FF7 Remake and I've been playing the hell out of FFXVI and BG3 on my Xbox and I can't wait for FF7 Rebirth next February!

Oh hang on, none of them are on xbox are they?

House of the RPG indeed.

Obscure_Observer213d ago

None of the games you mentioned are first party.

Those aren´t even exclusive.

In case you didn´t notice, Fable is an first party RPG among many others in development at XGS.

CappyBlack213d ago

When's the last time Sony released a JRPG; let alone an actual RPG? Outside of 3rd party payouts. I can say the same for virtually every genre that isn't a linear action game or a racing game that doesn't press their competition.

Barlos213d ago (Edited 213d ago )

"None of the games you mentioned are first party.

Those aren´t even exclusive.

In case you didn´t notice, Fable is an first party RPG among many others in development at XGS."

And where in your original post did you mention first party? Regardless of exclusivity, none of the games I mentioned - some of the biggest RPGs around - are on Xbox but you seem to think Xbox is home of the RPG. You have Starfield and...oh, Fable. Wow.

But that's OK, if you want to move the goalposts to make yourself feel better, go right ahead 👍

Also, if you want to talk first party, some would say that Horizon and God of War are action RPGs. I personally don't, but they could be classed as such since they have RPG elements.

Obscure_Observer213d ago (Edited 213d ago )

"And where in your original post did you mention first party?"

This topic is about Ryan Clark from Larian joining Playground Games.

I said, "Xbox is definitely the house of RPGs and it´s getting bigger and better by the day!"

Not idea how you though I was talking about third party games.

"Regardless of exclusivity, none of the games I mentioned - some of the biggest RPGs around - are on Xbox but you seem to think Xbox is home of the RPG."

Xbox as a brand, doesn´t have to own all of the RPG games available in the market to be considered "the house of RPGs". I made that statement because today, Xbox is the brand with more dedicated RPG studios under its wings.

Besides, Phil has a new partnership with SE in place, we already got FFXIV from Yoshi P´s team, I wouldn´t be surprised if FF7R and FFXVI are the next. BG3 is also coming to Xbox this year, it´s not like we ain´t getting that game.

" You have Starfield and...oh, Fable. Wow."

Pentiment
Project Dragon
Towerborne
TESVI
Fallout 5
Avowed
Clockwork Revolution
The Outer Worlds 2

All first party. So now you know.

Like I said, Xbox is undoubtedly the house of the RPG games. You may not like it, but it´s nothing but a fact. Unless of course, you have some actual facts to counter the facts the brought here regarding first party RPG development.

"Also, if you want to talk first party, some would say that Horizon and God of War are action RPGs. I personally don't, but they could be classed as such since they have RPG elements."

You know as well as everybody that those games are action/adventure games with some RPG elements thrown into the mix.

Unfortunately at the moment, Sony is not investing in first party RPGs or RPG studios. Sorry.

Still waiting to see what kind of game fable will be. Hope it has gargoyles...probably not.

Hope you can pick between male or female and choose something else to distinguish yourself during character creation.

Super excited for this and perfect dark...excited to see what they make that is. Don't have any high hopes but maybe MS can prove me wrong. Playground has been their studio for a long time and the initiative is their only new studio

Lightning77215d ago

"Hope you can pick between male or female and choose something else to distinguish yourself during character creation."

That's a staple in most if not all RPG's.

henbayward214d ago

Not these days, it ain't! 🤣🤣

VersusDMC215d ago

This is a good get as Baldur's Gate 3 is highly regarded.

But this has to be a hire for their next game right? Why would Fable need a producer now?

BrainSyphoned214d ago

Because the current producers at Xbox are helping produce some real bangers.... I'm sure Fable is in a great state right now.

Charlieboy333214d ago

Can't wait to see what their '10 year plan' is for Fable.....just like Halo and now Forza. I'm curious to see just how badly they fuck this up with online focused, drip fed content, design and gameplay. Because I know it's going to be nothing like the previous games and anyone expecting that is in for a nasty surprise.

Popsicle214d ago

I really am hoping against hope that you are wrong, but I think you are probably right. Unfortunately

Fable II - A Fantasy Series at Peak Performance

Fable II launched back in 2008 and remains the best the series has offered. Ahead of the series comeback, it's time to look at the classic.

Crows90313d ago

They gotta bring back those gargoyles!

Dudeson314d ago

I'd love to play it again, this time on pc though. Forever waiting on that pc port.

GaboonViper313d ago

Loved this game, oh and i always saved my dog at the end, hope the new Fable has a animal companion.

got_dam313d ago

Fable 2 was the best inthe series. Peter waaaaaaay over promised with fable 1 and it was good but disappointing. He didn't go crazy eith hype for the second game and it was surprisingly awesome. Then he ran his mouth promoting 3 and it was the worst of the 3.

cthulhucultist313d ago

Funny story: Fable 3 had a funny way of keeping the promises you made in the first half of the game and having enough money to defeat the darkness.

You only had to collect enough money to buy 2 stores in a busy market district. You then raise the prices to maximum and you turn xbox 360 internal clock 99 or more years ahead.

The next time you load the game, all the rents from the 99 years are collected immediately.

But yes I agree that 3 was the weakest of the three.

Demetrius313d ago

I only got to play it once 😩 I'm so tempted to buy a Xbox 360 slim but planning on getting the series x soon since I got a PS5 in February Im ready to get saints row 1&2 back, GTA 4, fable 2, but I also want to play infamous 1&2 again Sony screwed us over with the stream only for saints row 2 and other gems smh
