2014 report of Amy Hennig being “forced out” of Naughty Dog was nothing but “forced gossip”

According to Mitch Dyer, who previously worked for IGN and wrote the article in question, states he was forced by the site’s editors at the time (Steve Butts and Tal Blevins) to include “forced gossip” in the report.

RazzerRedux1422d ago (Edited 1422d ago )

"They forced an unproven claim onto http://IGN.com with my name on it, against my will, to "protect their relationship with Sony."

When Sony justifiably condemned our story, Steve and Tal were SILENT. They never went to bat for me for a second.

Huh? They forced an unproven claim in the story to "protect their relationship with Sony" which Sony later condemned? How exactly was that "protecting" their relationship with Sony? Those editors sound like total dumbasses.

Steve Butts was later fired from IGN for misconduct:

Lore1422d ago

They felt by stamping an editor’s name on the article that it would dissolve them and wipe their hands clean. Doesn’t seem as if they thought that one through

rdgneoz31422d ago

@Ilikestuff Miss her as well. Sadly she hasn't released anything since her departure as the Star Wars game got canned and haven't heard much from her since.

Eonjay1422d ago

I believe he is saying that they forced him to include fake content in his article and when they were called out that Steve and Talk were silent to protect their relationship with Sony. He feels set up.

Gotta be honest, lots of people at IGN are a-okay people. It's the management that tends to screw things up. Hate on certain personalities all you want, but most of those people aren't there for drama against devs, just news or generating a name for themself.

Lore1422d ago

Has never been the same since Greg & Colin left. Max Scoville is the only chill dude left

dumahim1422d ago

@Lore
yeah, I never really followed the site but would subscribe to their youtube channel just to keep up with the news, but stopped following a while back because the ads on their videos were usually forced 30 seconds, which is just unacceptable when the video is a really short bit or a trailer that isn't even their own. (I mostly watch youtube on my streaming box, so ad blocker isn't an option there).
I was rather shocked to see Max still there when I checked in for some of the Sony reveal coverage. Daemon isn't bad either.

RazzerRedux1421d ago

I agree. When I used to travel a lot for work, IGN's podcasts made the driving a lot easier. Definitely some great folks there despite the a-holes that have come and gone.

Atom6661421d ago

I think the relationship they were protecting was the editors' relationship with Sony, not the site's as a whole.

In other words, they wanted to spice up the story with some controversy and flamebait, but didn't want Sony to be mad at them. So they had Mitch Dyer put his name on it instead.

"These are the guys who would later publish a story on http://IGN.com stating THE LAST GUARDIAN IS CANCELED."

I remember that, lol

Malice-Flare1422d ago

this was debunked in Schrier's book, but IGN is still not out of this. that original article should be updated, or excised...

RazzerRedux1422d ago (Edited 1422d ago )

What was debunked again? That Hennig was forced out?

Malice-Flare1422d ago

yes, Schrier's book detailed the events of Amy's leaving and it's not the "forced out" narrative. IGN should have updated it then...

kevinsheeks1422d ago (Edited 1422d ago )

This is a very dangerous statement if he what he says is true they purposely did things to remain in good standing with publishers/companies this makes them extremely untrustworthy.

How can we trust them to review anything with honesty if they want to be on good standings with a company hell their reviews become meaningless if they are afraid to step on toes.

Also shame on them for painting that narrative if not true.

AspiringProGenji1422d ago (Edited 1422d ago )

Everyone has a kind of relationship with publishers, not the “give 10/10” relationship as morons only assume. Publications can’t just be making up controversy to damage any publisher when they feel like it. Obviously they will be blacklisted and rightfully so

rainslacker1422d ago

IGN would probably have to do a lot worse than this to be blacklisted. They're the largest gaming site on the planet.

But, IGN making up a narrative is unethical regardless of their reasons....particularly when they didn't need to report on it at all, and I can't imagine Sony would ask them to say what they said, nor would Sony need them to make a report about it at all, as they would be fine with it just going under the radar.

SonyStyled1422d ago (Edited 1422d ago )

I stopped trusting ign’s word after their gta4 review. I can be corrected if wrong, but my grudge with ign started with that game. PS3 was the lead platform for its development, and ign scored the 360 port with a higher review. Yet tech analysis showed the ps3 version was superior. For example, in the ps3 version you could jump in a helicopters rotors and be killed. In the 360 version, the character fell through the rotors as living and damage free. Again I could be corrected, as it was 12 years ago, but I remember the 360/ps3 console war in 2008, and the ps3 was the lead platform in development. It was ‘classic’ bias at its finest. Ah, the old school console wars. It was an interesting time! Anyway ign is still a big player in game reviews today. Ironically, ign is the first letters in the word ignore, and their input has stayed with me. Since then, there ‘big’ people like Colon Moriary left to form Kinda Funny Games

AspiringProGenji

The problem is most of the gifts and money is in the dark. And a lot of people can be bought for as little as a free console and games. And people at the top of these sites are taking advertising money for a preferential opinion in articles.

ShadowWolf7121422d ago (Edited 1422d ago )

You've got that a bit backwards.

They basically smeared Sony, Druckmann, and Straley by pressuring one of their writers to put this bogus info in their report and take the heat for it, thereby allowing THEM to look innocent of it and throw him under the bus so their relationship with the company they just smeared would be in tact.

It's kinda sad as it gave Druckmann and Straley a lot of grief for a long time over something they hadn't even done, to say nothing of being a PR nightmare for Sony.

Lore1422d ago

The two heads responsible no longer work for IGN

dumahim1422d ago

I think you should always be at least a bit skeptical of anyone in gaming. Legit companies or individuals. They all potentially have something to gain by playing nice.

Bruh1422d ago

As far as I know it was a creative difference not a hostile takeover. ND simply didn't want to go with Amy's vision and she was basically like yeah I'm done peace out

LoveSpuds1422d ago

Ahhhh, cool... Incidentally, what was your role at Naughty Dog at the time had this first hand experience of the goings on behind the scenes?

Bruh1422d ago

Nothing, never claimed I was an insider lmao. Didn't know I had to cite sources on N4G lmao. But as you seem to be the N4G lead analyst. My statement is based off of two sources, the first being Jason Schrier's book Love Sweet and Pixels and Amy's numerous interviews in which she states, that she put in two years of work and had left over creative differences.

Does that satisfy the N4G academic requirements Professor Spuds?

rainslacker1422d ago

I think they took over the UC4 story, and she was originally making that. I think they did the same with another game, but I can't remember which one...probably another UC.

That could have made for feel like her time there wasn't worth it anymore. She is a pretty high profile and prolific figure in the game industry, and would get lots of offers. If she felt that she wasn't needed there, she's going to go someplace where she feels she's needed. She's just that kind of person that needs to make her mark, and always has been.

That didn't have to come from creative differences, or any kind of contention within the studio, just the way things worked out in the end. She never seemed to hold a grudge for ND, their execs/directors, or Sony itself.

It's a shame that EA hasn't been that much better for her.

caddytrek1421d ago

As soon as you say "I think" you're not doing anything but spreading a rumor.

rainslacker1421d ago (Edited 1421d ago )

No, I'm stating that is my recollection of what was officially announced, but can't remember what it was. They did take a game's story away from her, and I believe it was UC4. If that makes it more clear my intent, then just go with that.

Beyond that, I'm just speculating on why she might have left, based on what I know of her, and how the industry generally works.

Spreading a rumor would be saying something assertively as if I know for sure, which I most certainly didn't do.

caddytrek1421d ago (Edited 1421d ago )

You're just repeating the same rumor. Until one of the actual parties involved says that it's all rumors and made up.

Nintendo confirms its commitment to physical games

In an era dominated by digital downloads and streaming services, the importance of physical media in gaming remains a topic of discussion.

Of course, Nintendo has always preferred physical sales, especially since they skew to a younger audience, and kids want games for their birthdays and holidays. They go to the store and pick the game they want.

Since the Wii they have always been the last major publisher to support modern tech or concepts, and they will be the last to support physical if it ever goes away. Which I hope it doesn't.

darthv7215h ago

Nintendo just likes sales in general. If they can sell digital more, they would because the 2nd hand market they do not get a cut of. For me, i tend to buy more physical switch games than I do other platforms. I do have my fair share of digital deals from the eshop though. Especially if its something that i have a sealed physical copy of and dont want to reduce its value.

Cacabunga14h ago

Then I know for sure who I will be supporting

neutralgamer199215h ago

OK, but you need better format where these games could actually fit instead of half of the game being in physical form and all I have being on a digital code or have to download

Hofstaderman15h ago

The one caveat with cartridges. If the leaks are true the internal storage stands at 256gb plus SD card support too.

franwex12h ago

You could have a 256gb card and a 10gb card. Publishers will simply use the 10gb one and make you download the rest.

Inverno15h ago

There are cards that can fit all of a game but those cost more, and publishers are cheap. It's weird cause with how much the switch has sold and how long it's been on the market the costs to manufacture these cards should've been much lower by now. It's a publisher issue cause there has only been very few exceptions on PS and Xbox, rest of the industry would rather force a download despite Blu-ray being cheap.

shinoff218313h ago

Your right. It's definitely a publisher issue. From my time collecting that's what I've come across. Just always remember

Doesitplay.org

Tell you everything you need to know about releases.

Flakegriffin12h ago

Pretty sure most, if not all, of Nintendo first party titles are all on cartridge. It’s the third parties.

Neonridr6h ago

that's on devs who opt for cheaper sized cartridges to save on manufacturing costs.

Yeah it artificially retains the high prices for their software. Hence Pirates will always have their day with them.
