Trials of Mana shows us what a more faithful Final Fantasy 7 Remake could have been like

Had Square Enix remade Final Fantasy 7 using the same graphics engine as Trials of Mana, we probably wouldn't have complained about the end result. The company's budget-conscious approach to remaking the 1995 Trials of Mana original shows us how a "safe" Final Fantasy 7 Remake might have looked instead of the huge multi-part gamble they are currently taking with the series.

People have been asking for a remake of FFVII for over a decade. No way in hell would Square Enix not go all out in a rerelease of one of their most impactful games of all time.

Nintentional1492d ago

What you just said has nothing to do with the topic of the article...

FallenAngel19841492d ago

Did you even read what I said? 😑

“This isn't to say that fans would prefer one style over the other as the current Final Fantasy 7 Remake is an excellent title worthy of its name, but it's an interesting "what if" scenario to ponder had the developers wanted to budget the game and its visuals in a less grandiose manner than what we actually got”

People were expecting a remake of FFVII to have as high production values as a mainline title now. There’s no reality where Square Enix would’ve treated such a title with a modest budget

My problem with the new FF VII from the beginning has been that it is a third of a remake. Most of the original is missing. I didn't know they were going to change the story and gameplay so much that in effect, it's a totally different game. I guess in that case, it has to be treated as one. How good is it on its own, without considering its loose inspiration (the original)? How complete is it in its own right? That has to be the approach in reviews.

Wimba611492d ago

And that has been the approach in reviews. The results show that the game is great and it is personally my game of the generation.

I’m aware that nostalgia has a part to do with that, but no-one can deny that the game is an excellent “remake”. It actually challenges the very definition of a remake with its controversial ending.

FullDiveDerail1492d ago

I think its strange that people love 7 but when they actually give us the most ambitious and best remake ever that people find stuff to complain about..this will end up being a far superior product to the original.

Larrysweet1492d ago

I played up to train section it's just linear and boring ash once nostalgia wears off dk

TFJWM1492d ago

I am guessing you haven't played it or gotten far enough to understand how it relates to the original.

Exvalos1492d ago (Edited 1492d ago )

If this was a brand new game and you didnt know about a part 2 and 3 would you still be whining? No you wouldn't because this first installment is a full game. People are hitting 80 hours of playtime. They did this because they wanted to expand on the world to release it as one game with current tech simply is not possible. Game would have been 300+ gigs. That is simply not realistic.

FullDiveDerail1492d ago

The approach to the reviews should be..is this a game good? yes ..is it long enough to make it worth the price? yes..

I thought about how the story might be messed up before playing but then once I got the game and played it myself...I find it much more in depth with the story, the main story is still there but now much more deeper with the added extras

Deeper and more attached to the main characters and non main characters.

To me I loved every second of it...the ending was a welcome addition to a beautiful, thought out story.

I am now replaying the games chapters on Hard

Just love it.

Biggs is so adorable 😝

FF7 big problem is a lot of original stuff is missing

FullDiveDerail1492d ago

not really they just added a lot more to it

Mr_Luke1492d ago

No, sorry... unless it's a joke. You have the original things, some original but adapted ones and completely new ones. Nothing is really missing, it's just bigger than the old first part.

akuarius871492d ago

Like the faithful remake of secret of mana?

Shiken1492d ago

Secret of Mana was played too safe, and ended up suffering because of it.

Trials of Mana however took the base game, and changed how you explore the world. You are now in a completely 3D model of the original game with combat that is faithful to the original version yet expanded upon and improved. Everything from the dialog to the plot is the same, but remade instead of reimagined. Post game content that was added takes place AFTER the events of the original game, and does not try to deviate from the main plot as a result.

FFVIIR is a reboot/reimagined game with its own canon separate from the original, but uses the original as a solid foundation to build upon. putting Remake in the title was a mistake on SE part.

Trials of Mana is the perfect example of a TRUE remake, and a damn good game to boot. It stayed true to the source material and allows you to experience the same quest from a completely different perspective.

Secret of Mana is more of a heavy remaster. They totally revamped the visuals (for better or worse), but did not really change how you experience the game.

What about Premium? Sony is having a laugh.

darthv72656d ago

since the allure of Premium is the older back catalog, they havent announced what is being added to that tier specifically. But since premium also includes extra then you can at least look forward to these.

sparky77656d ago

It's weird, kind of reminds me of how Game Pass PC was at the start with lack of games but normal Game Pass got everything.

They should really make Premium cheaper or in Beta mode until they have content to add.

crazyCoconuts656d ago

It's $1.66 extra a month when you pay annually. Pretty cheap already

Silly gameAr656d ago

@sparky77
You should try premium. If you're a fan of older console games, like most gamepass members are, they would love premium. Plus it's cheaper than gamepass and has a wider selection of games.

porkChop656d ago

These games are already on GP with the exception of Trials of Mana. Good for PS though, it's a good month.

sparky77656d ago

Shhh don't ruin the moment for him :)

Silly gameAr656d ago

If MS wouldn't have finally opened their eyes to how good the Yakuza series is, it wouldn't have been on xbox. It's a good thing they decided to give sega all of that money to make Like a Dragon a timed exclusive, and put most of the games on gamepass.

The biggest thing that happened to them this year was getting the Persona series on xbox finally. It's a great series , like yakuza. When xbox gets games that Playstation has had for years on their console, it always a pretty big deal.

DVAcme656d ago

Yakuza 0, 1 and 2 alone make this a fucking amazing month. Those three are easily over 20 or 30 hours of gameplay each.

Ready4nxtgen656d ago

It's alot more than 20 hours. Around maybe 50 to 70 hrs for some of them

darthv72656d ago

...if you are into that sort of game.

porkChop656d ago

They're great games. I used to have no interest in them but after playing Like a Dragon I started playing Yakuza Kiwami. Even if you're not sure you'd like them you should give them a try, they might surprise you.

TheColbertinator656d ago

Certainly among the best offerings on Game Pass for me

FallenAngel1984656d ago

Trials of Mana is a nice addition

They should also start adding the Kingdom Hearts and Dragon Quest series to the service at some point

Deathdeliverer656d ago

As someone that has been playing the Yakuza series since PS2 and has played and beat every game except Like a dragon (working on that now) and the one in feudal Japan, this is an amazing month. I won’t benefit from it personally as I own all of them, but man I hope people give these awesome games a try. Yakuza zero alone is amazing. Running the cabaret is more fun than anyone would have guessed. Racing the cars had me glued. I’ve played DBD for a few years now and it’s a great game full of toxic try hard survivors. Feels amazing to get those clutch killer wins on them. Both sides are super fun though. Already have Bugsnax. Ghost recon should be fun. I’ll be giving that a try.
I personally won’t benefit much from this month, but mannnn is it a hell of a month from those that will.

VersusDMC656d ago

The yakuza game in feudal japan is Yakuza Ishin and never got localized for the west. We got the zombie one (dead souls) because i guess westerners like zombies and not samurai...

They should localize it now as a remaster since Ghost of Tsushima showed a samurai game can sell well.
