Xbox Series X Storage Drives Look a Lot Like This Sony PS5 Patent

Expandable SSD storage is a thing

They're looking more and more like the same console in a different box.

darthv721512d ago

No doubt the PPS5 will also support external USB for older games (like the SX).

Eonjay1512d ago

I've been saying it was the same since E3

fiveby91512d ago

The consoles will be very similar hardware wise. Not identical but similar. Except for the exclusive games....

Babadook71512d ago

They look the same. Who copied who?

Unspoken1512d ago (Edited 1512d ago )

It's been the same for the past gen. They're custom SoC computers now. Ain't complaining though as both are pushing new features that rival gaming PCs.

Making this mandatory is a double edged sword as games can be forced into using the new memory access features but consumers will also be forced into using their branded peripherals. Maybe allow and 3rd party SSD/nvme that meets spec? Don't see it coming though as the connector is proprietary.

to be fair, these are just NVMe cards. With the adoption of 4k and beyond, higher rez textures etc, it was only a matter of time before they had to ditch platter drives and their horrendously slow speeds. I'm surprised the new machines even have optical drives... i guess for blu-ray's, but once you taste the speed of NVMe, an optical disc will really show its age for anything other than movies.

I'm also slightly convinced xbox is going to have the hardware advantage this year. Sony might have access to RDNA2 like MS (if they don't cheap out and use an older 1x version), but on top of that MS still has DirectML up its sleeve. Thats an MS thing only. If the Series X has this in addition to an extra TFLOP of gpu power (if the ps5 leaks are true at 11 FLOPS) MS will get a lot more mileage out of that 1 extra (and the 11 before it) to make it feel like its punching above its weight. Sony will need an equivalent - especially if they have a lower powered gpu

frostypants1512d ago (Edited 1512d ago )

Good riddance to platter HDDs as anything other than archiving. Freaking 1980s tech bottleneck that refused to die.

darthv721512d ago

The optical disc is just for storage and still represents an inexpensive medium for high capacity installations.

sprinterboy1512d ago

Ms has direct ml but playstation will have there own version just like directx and opengl.

waverider1512d ago (Edited 1512d ago )

Dude, dont talk before. Even a lower powered gpu can beat one with more teraflops. Nobody knows nothing about the PS5. The only thing we know is that ssd will be faster then the x

both can be correct. No doubt that toy uses carts but then so can the PS5. It's just a difference of the tech inside that cart casing. Hell... they could make the PS5 memory expansions look just like the PS memory cards of old. That would be sweet actually, and very fitting to the PS legacy.

CaptainHenry9161512d ago

It's going to come down to the first party exclusives next generation :)

1Victor1512d ago

@captainHenry916 🤫 don’t say anything let them hope beyond reality that power will win over dedicated exclusive games build for the PS5

xX-oldboy-Xx1512d ago

That's always the case - just one has better games, which is also - always the case. It's also why I struggle with how others come to the conclusion that the inferior product somehow is the better product.

Especially given the parent companies track record.

Looking forward to tomorrow.

silenthillstrangler1511d ago

except one will have amazing games.

They gonna make money off those things, or maybe fail like the vita memory cards which were custom memory stick for it just like these and expensive just like these gonna be.

Fist4achin1512d ago

The Vita proprietary memory was so expensive in comparison to regular memory cards out there. I hope they are priced reasonably.

1511d ago
darthv721512d ago

I don't know why they had to make a new memory card specifically for the Vita when they already had the M2. My PSP Go uses a 16gb M2 and it is the same physical size and shape as the vita card (but as if mirror flipped). Maybe because the M2 was like the MSPDuo (meaning any company could make one), and Sony wanted to control the vita cards so they made them just slightly different??? Performance wise they are pretty much the same so, go figure.

kneon1512d ago

I expect it was mostly to do with deterring hacking. Not that they could stop serious attempts just with a new card format, but it would be harder for the average hacker to do.

rainslacker1512d ago

They did it so they could encrypt the cards and try and prevent piracy. Everything questionable about the vita that it got criticized for, outside the oft used no games BS, was designed around locking the system down. The memory chips in the vita memory card were just standard memory modules, but the form factor, pin connections, and encryption chip were all proprietary.

xX-oldboy-Xx1512d ago

It was a disaster - it would be interesting to know who proposed and approved those cards.

KillBill1512d ago

It is exactly what Sony does. They like to create proprietary hardware that requires users to source their own well for what they need instead of others that have copied their past propitiatory hardware attempts.

This patent was for a kids toy, not for PS5

SamPao1512d ago

sheesh thanks, sometimes I just wish at least journalists would do their job. but you have to look for the commentator with the brain.

sprinterboy1512d ago

The leak was disguised imo as a toy but hinting at the playstation but did the toy picture so they didn't get sued? Maybe?

isarai1512d ago (Edited 1512d ago )

@sprinterboy

Nah, doubt a company would design and produce a product just to cover up a leak of an accessory to a game system. Not to mention the time between the leak and the toy reveal is nowhere near enough time to design, prototype, produce, and market an electronic toy.

ocelot071512d ago

Hopefully it's not propitiatory. We ll remember the Vita memory cards those prices where a joke.

darthv721512d ago

I don't know of anything else on the market that uses these so... they would be proprietary (design, not technology).

Don't Blame Arrowhead For Helldivers 2's PSN Controversy, Blame Sony

Sony is to blame for Helldivers 2 getting brutally review bombed, so why is Arrowhead still catching strays?

i feel like a majority has been blaming Sony and not Arrowhead.
just what ive seen.

isarai12h ago

Same, not sure where they were looking

Tacoboto1h ago

Arrowhead's CEO is awesome and so transparent; they're demonstrating they're a gamer-first studio and will stand by our side even with a publishing partner as big as Sony.

I haven't seen anyone blaming Arrowhead except the dumb "but you knew!" takes... Which are useless, it's still the publisher that listed it for sale in unsupported countries.

KwietStorm_BLM1h ago

I think we've already moved past it but hey gotta remind everyone what direction to throw shade where they were already throwing it.

DarXyde39m ago

Is anyone blaming Arrowhead?

That would be news to me.

TheColbertinator38m ago

I do. Sony is a pox on the gaming industry.

I love Broken Sword but I admit I was disappointed to see it'll get a mobile release. Seems like it'll be massively limited because of that. Probably good for the studio though. Really looking forward to the redo of BS1 too. We need more point and click games
