PlayStation 5 To Feature 11 TFLOPS GPU With 52 CUs, Clocked At 1743MHz - Rumor

A verified game developer recentrly posted a riddle on the NeoGAF forums regarding the PlayStation 5 specs, and some users think they have solved it

I don't even know how many TFLOPS my current console has.

Just confirm the games and key system features.

Muzikguy1525d ago

I'm ready to hear more whenever we do!

darthv721524d ago

So who do you think will be the bigger 'FLOP'... PS5 or XSX?

TakashiKomuro1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

11 TFLOPS means ~2.5x the Pro and ~5x the Base PS4

That's all.

Then you have:
-SSD for little to no loading times
-Custom 3D audio chip
-Patent for wireless controller charging
-Ryzen CPU for smarter AI, smoother gameplay(less stuttering), faster OS, etc.

RpgSama1524d ago

@takashiKomuro

There's mucho More to the number than that, for both XsX and PS5, RDNA 2 tech performance is not the same to GCN (Jaguar), so it's not a straight comparison number to number, 12 TFLOPS of RDNA2 for the XsX is MUCH more than 2 times the 6 TFLOPS of the X1X.

xX-oldboy-Xx1524d ago

darth72 - I think we all know, even if they don't want to believe it - they know.

TakashiKomuro1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

RPGsama, true, RDNA would have additional improvements.

Muzikguy1524d ago

@darth

I'd rather not say. It will be apparent soon enough. The games are what I care about

kryteris1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

-PSVR finally looking good and running proper.
-bio feedback on controller triggers, could be a big deal particularly with survival or horror games.
*I'd be fine with a 1 tf difference, no headache there unlike the xbone.

TheKingKratos1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

Darth

Who cares ?! Honest, as long as there is developers who push the system to it full power and do it right, that's all what matters

And Sony have those kind of developers who make our eyes melt like SSM,ND,Sucker punch,GG etc etc

Tapani1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

@TakashiKomuro

11 TFLOPS means roughly 6x the base PS4, and 2.6x the power of PS4 Pro. Your numbers were a bit off. But the bigger thing here is that we are comparing GCN to RDNA2.0, which would mean PS5 is around 8x-9x the base PS4 and 3.5x-4x the PS4 Pro power. Plus 4.0 gen SSD and new CPU. So it's going to be a real leap forward.

GTgamer1524d ago

That's not hard to believe tbh not one of my friends know how many TF's are in their console they just know it's stronger than the previous console before it 😂😂😂 hell I dare you to go play any online game and ask random gainers the TF's of their console and I can predict 95% won't know tbh.

boing11523d ago

You have no idea how many people doesn't care about this kind of information. It's all about brand and games for them.

GTgamer1524d ago

Dear sony
Please announce the PS5 already you got fans out here trying to figure out riddles 😂😂😂 28514;

MrSec841524d ago

XB1 has 1.31TFlops, S has 1.4, PS4 has 1.84, PS4 Pro has 4.2 and XB1-X has 6TFlops.

You also have to bare in mind that the type of GPU architecture is a factor to understand as well.
The architecture in Pro and X is more efficient than what's in the other consoles this gen.

PS5 and Series X are both using RDNA 2.0 technology, with Ray Tracing hardware, which means they will be even more capable than the straight TFlops tell you compared PS4 Pro and X.

ziggurcat1524d ago

And if it happens to be a difference of 0.4 - 0.5 between the two, then the XSX having more TFs argument is pretty much moot.

FPS_D3TH1524d ago

@ziggurcat especially since it’ll come down to games at that point.

chiefJohn1171524d ago

That was the difference between PS4 and the ogXO and ppl made a huge deal of it remember? So I doubt it'll be moot lol

RazzerRedux1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

@chiefJohn117

"That was the difference between PS4 and the ogXO and ppl made a huge deal of it remember? So I doubt it'll be moot lol"

There is a 38% difference in power between the og XO (1.31) and PS4 (1.81).

There is a 42% difference in power between the PS4 Pro (4.2) and XOX (6) .

There is only a 3.5% difference in power between 11.6 TF and 12 TF.

It is moot.

CoinOrc1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

@chiefjohn
What Razzer said. Not to mention people made a big deal about the power difference because the PS4 was more powerful AND cheaper than the Xbox one because MS was stupid enough to force a stupid camera that nobody cared about.

Both ps5 and XOX will be similar in raw power and features. It will come down to games and how developers especially the first party developers choose to use that power

Price will be the key factor between the 2 and Sony wants to come to the market with a lower price point

That was an entertaining read on gaf, dudes having fun with it, not so sure hes a legit insider but I'm also not so sure hes not🤷‍♂️🤣

Christopher1524d ago

He's a legit developer, we just aren't sure which member of the studio he is. But, we know his online handle and we can determine credibility via that name.

IRetrouk1524d ago

Im aware hes a dev, but hes also admitted to no first hand experience, his dev company dont have dev kits(according to odium himself). Should have worded myself better, he keeps claiming not to be an insider, all his info is coming from a second unnamed source, so not really sure about him that's all, I like how hes kept the wait for info on the ps5 entertaining though with his riddles and stuff.

SierraGuy1524d ago

What's he basing his numbers off?

His months old Dev kit?

That's awesome.

Christopher1524d ago

***Im aware hes a dev, but hes also admitted to no first hand experience, his dev company dont have dev kits(according to odium himself).***

He's still in the know due to his position, though like all rumors I would really treat this with a grain of salt. Named source who is confirmed a developer or not, nothing really matters until we see the official specifications from Sony. That's my personal opinion. Our guidelines on rumors is more tailored to the general desire of the users here, though. And, this being from a developer who is tied to an account we can identify, makes it more credible than most rumors we see on the site here.

IRetrouk1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

@Sierra, No, he doesnt have access to any ps5 dev kit, he says hes getting his numbers from a dev friend, says it can go between 11.60tf to 12. Odd depending on clocks and heat etc, while obviously we dont know if hes telling the truth or not, or even what version of the dev kit hes been told about, he seems to be a calm and rational person who's having a bit of fun with some info he might or might not know🤷‍♂️
I dont know if hes telling the truth, but his codes and riddles have been a fun distraction from the next gen wait, I look forward to seeing how close or off he is after the reveal.

@ chris, I wasnt complaining about the rumor or article or anything like that, I was just giving my opinion on his comments and how I felt towards him and just informing anyone that might not be up to speed on his rumor and where he got it from, I like the dude, been very entertained.

Christopher1524d ago

***No, he doesnt have access to any ps5 dev kit***

But he has access to the information. That's what insiders have, access to information.

xX-oldboy-Xx1524d ago

Christopher - That sounds like a Chinese whisper, they never end the way they started.

Christopher1524d ago

***Christopher - That sounds like a Chinese whisper, they never end the way they started.***

I hope you apply this logic to all rumors because that's how they all work. Otherwise, it would be "official."

Personally, people here tend to flip-flop a ton on who they hold stock in as far as rumors go, and it's not just "one side." Personally, I'm just waiting for official information. I don't care what people say other than the product manufacturer.

AngelicIceDiamond1524d ago

If True then Sony's not playin around. 11 TFlops is massive. At the end of the day I still wanna hear from Sony. But I hope this is true though. This sounds way more credible than 4 chans "leak". That's right 4chan tried pulling off something 3 or 4 days ago but only a few sites picked it up while the rest ignored them for very good reason.

IRetrouk1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

I'm not sure if his info is up to date or not, or if it's true or not but I have enjoyed his posts, hes seems reasonable to me and his info doesnt really sound so far fetched as the 9 or 13 rumors, but like all rumors I'm taking it with some salt, i dont tend to put much wait behind insiders, just enjoying the speculation to be honest, helping the wait atleast lol.

AngelicIceDiamond1524d ago

Speaking of 4chan just today they're starting up yet another "rumor" this time they're saying 15.1TF I kid you not. 4chan is self aware and know that they're clowns at this point its satire. Let me break this down. So according to 4chan PS5 TF is 1 T Flop more than the strongest rig that got announced about a week ago which will easily be over 1200$. Cerny and other PC enthusiast have stated you need at least 9 to 10TF to create next gen worlds. high frames res, worlds etc. 15, 13 is beyond over kill and it just makes no technical sense even 12 is slightly pushing it. 13 or 15 TF will easily put the PS5 600$ and above, 7 to maybe even 8. That's if Sony over clocks everything. The series X is already beat by the newest rig, its said to be 3x faster than series X. Yeah nobody will spend 600+ on consoles.

Anyway's 4chans bored and this nonsense needs to stop, Sony needs to speak up soon. 9 or 10 TF is literally enough but I just wanna see all this in action.

rainslacker1524d ago

I wouldn't say 13 is overkill, but it is excessive, and expensive, for a console. If we were to wait a year, then the 13TF of next year would be more like the price of the 11-12 TF now. Not much gain in 1 extra TF, but a rather hefty price difference.

What 13TF would net the consoles is more lifespan against the PC. It would also help push PC minimum requirements for games higher....as that is often still based on multi-plat ports of major games, which leaves the minimum requirement low because people don't need to upgrade as often.

However, an interesting side effect of this is would AMD be willing to give the consoles a lower price on higher end GPU's to push PC GPU sales if they are hoping to get the minimum requirements up faster. There's quite a big difference between the min requirements for PC now, and the higher end GPU's available. There's a limit on how many high end GPU's can be sold on a PC. The crypto currency thing affecting GPU price was kind of a fad, although there are remnants of it. But, with new GPU architecture, the interest to push past GCN is going to be pretty high for the GPU makers, and the longer people stay on the old hardware, the slower the next couple of gens of GPU's are to get adopted.

andy851524d ago

People will spend 600 on consoles though. 14 years before the PS5 the 60GB PS3 was 599. That's close to 800 in today's money. People are out there buy $1000-1500 phones today. Back then that certainly didn't happen.

TakashiKomuro1523d ago

Andy, only 10% of the population buys $1000 phones and the PS3 had a rough start.

Yeah, people will buy an $800 console, but not many. $499 seems like mainstream appeal.

rainslacker1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

He's verified by the Gaf mods as someone who works in the industry. They're known to be reputable to verify such people, and he's a direct source unlike many rumors.

This was an interesting riddle. Wish I had seen it before it popped up here, because I love brain teasers.

I'm curious if this is an acceptable way to get around NDA's.

A dev doesn't have to have a dev kit to be a licensed PS dev and have access to the info. Chances are he may also have other contacts that gave him the info. While it's not technically ethical to have that happen, it does happen in dev inner circles. He also wouldn't be bound by NDA's if he's not a licensed Sony dev, although it's not really ethical to release such info, or even tease at it, as it could get their actual source in trouble.

Wouldn't take this as gospel, but it's a bit of fun at least.

Atom6661524d ago

He came out and said that he's relying on information from unnamed "friends" of his.

It's no different than a known journalist relying on his/her unnamed sources. This whole thing is laughable at this point.

It is a rumor. I remember the PS4 rumor a great many people bought into - the PS4 would have 4GB of RAM. It doesn't do to pay attention to any rumor regarding specs. Even after confirmation it really comes down to the titles for that particular console. Power without application is meaningless.

The only thing that I can't see is where they're getting 11TF and 1743MHz from.

MasterCornholio1524d ago

I guess from the 52CUs. But from what I'm reading 52CUs can give you anywhere from 11TF to 12TF depending on the clock speed.

Eonjay1524d ago

It's Tru. If you bump it up a mere 53 MHz you get 12 TF. So it is nearly the same as Xbox. Something tells me this was on purpose. They were always gonna be almost identical.

Muzikguy1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

The CU's and other things don't count?

ziggurcat1524d ago

I get where they're getting the CU number from, but I don't know where they're getting the math for 11TF or 1743MHz, that's all. I like the prospect of the PS5 being at least 11TF, and I have a feeling it might be more.

1524d ago
ziggurcat1524d ago

@shaggy

Yeah... that's one hell of a reach on the 1743 if that's what someone came up with to determine that number.

Wasabi1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

@Zigguracat

**"The only thing that I can't see is where they're getting 11TF and 1743MHz from"**

WCCFTECH have actually made an error in the math, it should actually be 11.6TF not 11.06 as mentioned in the article.

To work it out,

Multiply the number of compute units (52) by the number of Shader Cores per CU (128) x GPU Clock Speed (1743MHz)

= 11,601.... Which is 11.6TF's

Edit:

Just realised you are asking about how the information has been decoded from the message and not necessarily the calculations for the GPU, to that one I have absolutely zero clue other than the rhyme aspect of the original message as referenced in the article.

RazzerRedux1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

https://i.imgur.com/4KKD7uC...

So the address in the original post is 1600 Madison Ave. The dev later replied:

"The pigeon is merely flying at an altitude lower than he usually flies due to bad weather, and as such, will raise by at least a good 100-150 feet by the time everything clears up. Just so you know."

To which another poster replied:

"OK, 1600 + 150 = 1750 MHz.

There was 52 Coos there, so 1750 X 52 X 64 X 2 = 11.6 TFLOPPIES!!!

16-512 = 16 GB GDDR6 at 512 GB/s bandwidth!"

Yeah....who knows? \_(ʘ_ʘ)_/

Wasabi1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

@Razzer

**"16-512 = 16 GB GDDR6 at 512 GB/s bandwidth!"**

...Or 16 GB Mem with a 512 GB sized SSD.

ziggurcat1524d ago

@Razzer

I figured the 1600 as well as the 16-512 were also references to specs, but I did not see any reply from that dev regarding the reference to flying lower due to bad weather. The 16 in the 16-512 automatically stuck out to mean 16GB of RAM to me. I think the common conclusion is that the 512 = 512GB/s bandwidth, but I can totally see it as 512GB HDD as Wasabi mentioned.

@Wasabi

How do they know there's 128 shader cores? Is that just based on known HW that's already out there or is there something in this riddle that points to 128?

Here's hoping Sony comes out with official numbers soon - if there's any truth to this, then it certainly debunks the previous 9.2TF rumours that were so adamantly perpetuated. I recall Sony posting some coy Tweet to the effect that you shouldn't believe what you read right around the time those rumours were circulating (I'll try to find that Tweet). And the lower specs championed by misterxmedia followers were completely laughable (as are the ones claiming 13+TF).

This, at least, seems actually plausible since it's coming from a dev, and not some guy saying he heard from some other guy who heard from a different guy, etc...

Wasabi1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

@Ziggurcat

**"How do they know there's 128 shader cores? Is that just based on known HW that's already out there"**

It's actually 64 x 2 on each of the traditional CU's. Yes, based on what is already known about the architecture.

**"I recall Sony posting some coy Tweet to the effect that you shouldn't believe what you read right around the time those rumours were circulating (I'll try to find that Tweet)"**

That Tweet was misconstrued. The one you are referring to was on the run up to Christmas where each day Sony would run a quote from a PlayStation game. On one of the days around the time of the Github leak Fragile was quoted from Death Stranding "Everything is true, except for the lies". People put 2 and 2 together and came up with 5.

The quote was actually posted prior to the Github leak making the news.

**"This, at least, seems actually plausible since it's coming from a dev, and not some guy saying he heard from some other guy who heard from a different guy, etc..."**

Nah, it's pretty much the same thing buddy, he's got the info second hand.

Here's a quote from the man himself

"You know, a month or so ago I was just guessing, that’s true. But that’s when I started talking to friends who knew"

It honestly sounds like those numbers conspiracy things I used to come up with in college during those quiet nights with one other person tripping on various mind altering substances.

Yeah, sure, we'd write it down, then when looked at the next day, we'd ask ourselves, "What the hell does this say?"

Given all the talk of pigeons, and coo'ing, are we sure this dev didn't just post this in some altered state?

Disclaimer: yes, this comment is tongue in cheek. I actually find this kind of interesting.:) And yes, those night sessions were a thing for me because math majors have obsessive need to make numbers mean something.

MasterCornholio1524d ago

On Gaf with 52 CUs they have a range of 11-13.3 teraflops depending on the clock speed of the GPU. What some are saying is that it might be around 11.6 TF in the end since the clock speed seems logical for the CU count.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 1524d ago
MasterCornholio1524d ago

So basically 52>36.

Or 11-12.5 TFs > 7-8 TFs

That's alot better than what the GitHub rumor was saying.

Anyways I hope it's true especially with RDNA2.

RazzerRedux1524d ago

Well, Jason Schreier said the power difference between PS5 and XSX would be negligible. This seems to back that assertion up.

MasterCornholio1524d ago

It could be that this insider is just talking crap and is constructing his rumor based off what other people have said.

But we actually have his identity so I don't believe he would jeopardize his reputation that way. Always take this with a grain of salt because he claims it isn't 1st hand information.

RazzerRedux1524d ago

"It could be that this insider is just talking crap and is constructing his rumor based off what other people have said."

Later he actually says his source are "friends who know".

"Don’t keep posting bullshit. I mean I’ve already said, multiple times, that I’m not breaking any NDAs or anything. You know, a month or so ago I was just guessing, that’s true. But that’s when I started talking to friends who knew. Funny how that shit works huh? Fatal Enigma Fatal Enigma keeps calling me out here and on twitter but still, here we are. The amazing thing is, he doesn’t realise I’m an Xbox fanboy as well, so he’s sort of shooting himself in the dick there.

But this is what I’m currently dealing with. A few threats, a death/sexual threat against my daughter, some twitter people who lack the ability to read, and some forum goers who don’t really want to accept that BOX A = BOX B."

https://www.neogaf.com/thre...

rainslacker1524d ago

Some people really do seem to take any rumor that goes against their belief, or hope, to be worth getting worked up over. To me, they're all rumors. At best, they're good for discussing the implication, not to be used to condemn a company or person. Even at the start of this gen, when the rumors of MS doing an always online console were circulating, Sony fans were having a field day, and I was just sitting there saying, "MS couldn't be that stupid to try something like that". Adam Orth added fuel to that fire, but I just looked at it as two people having a philosophical discussion about the matter, which I assumed came about due to the rumors that were circulating.

I was wrong of course, but at least I wasn't wrong to try and think it through rationally about how stupid it would be for MS to do such a thing.

I take these rumors much the same way. There are so many of them, how can one possibly take one as gospel, and why would people set themselves up to more likely be wrong? I know what Sony has told devs to target, and I will still discuss these rumors as if I don't, because I like the philosophical discussion. But, at the same time, trying to have that discussion just devolves into a lot of attacks, and people not caring about any of the interesting info on it. They only care about what they can use for arguing over who has the best console.

It's not a first-party game though. Is it really too much to expect these low-rate websites to have the bare minimum of knowledge about the topic that they write about?

This reminds me of the hoops that some diehard Nintendo fans would go through to claim a game (like Bayonetta 2) is first-party just to say Nintendo is pumping out games.
