IGN: Left 4 Dead Review

There's absolutely no doubt that Left 4 Dead is one of the most social and exciting multiplayer games that we've ever played. It's almost pitch perfect in how it captures the tension and the action of a Hollywood zombie movie. This is an incredible and highly replayable multiplayer experience that's definitely worth checking out, especially if you're looking to prepare yourself for the inevitable zombie apocalypse. Just make sure you bring your friends.

Something about zombies swarming and destroying my friends is a lot more fun then me and my friends running around the map, being so detached from one another.

I played the demo probably over 30 times now with friends and it's never old. Two of the smallest levels known to FPS has kept my friends and I's attention. Great stuff.

I tried the demo on X360. Personally I have to agree somewhat. If played as a single-player, you can find better experiences (it's still good but not great). Haven't tried co-op though but I can see that that part might be a lot of fun. But I'm wondering if the Horde mode for Gears 2 might be just as satisfying.

Hey, Jenzo, not only if you had been playing Resistance 2 would you realize how Ted Price and co. KNOW HOW to make compelling multiplayer experiences... but if you had been reading the reviews, you'd know it, too, because that is the feature of R2 that 95% of reviewers agree is where it is a high quality title. Most of the qualms with R2 seem to be with the campaign, not the co-op and the competitive multiplayer.

Are you kidding me? You haven't played much Resistance 2 co-op either, have you? I have played like 10 hours worth of R2 co-op and let me tell you, everybody sticks together, forms up, and helps out. People select classes based on what our party needs. If we start out with 8 soldiers, you know for a fact someone will quickly switch to Spec Ops, and somebody else will switch to Medic, and before you know it, you've got enough ammo guys, health guys, and shootin' guys in the right proportions to go take on the baddies, and everyone sticks together. The game ABSOLUTELY encourages (nay, REQUIRES) everyone to stick together, because all of the classes require each other for full effectiveness. The player who strays from the pack not only gets killed, but also increases the chances of the other 7 players getting killed because they don't have his assistance. If you were truly a Resistance 2 Co-Op player, you would know that teamwork is essential and everyone does indeed work together.

I hate having to defend games, but dammit I'll do it anyway, because so many people spew false information because they haven't spent proper time with the games they're criticizing. If you haven't played enough of a game to really know what you're talking about, then you shouldn't be talking about it at all. Dammit, why was Insomniac, Ted Price, and Resistance 2 ever brought up in here to begin with? This is about Left 4 Dead, and yet somehow I find a great game that has nothing to do with Left 4 Dead being criticized by people who clearly don't know what they're talking about and I'm compelled to come in here and defend the fine work of talented developers who get unnecessarily shat upon by hyper-critical nimrods that don't even really play the games they claim to know all the faults with.

I would say that Valve as a developer seemes kinda lazy. They seem to only settle for just good enough, both with how much content the game has and how good it looks. I don't know if they ran out of space on the dvd-9 or if they just ran out of resources, but Imo, it's far too short. But Left for dead is no less than very refreshing and fun for that it seemes. I don't know If I would buy it based on how small it is, but I might be able to trick my brother in to buying it so I can play it as his place.

I think, they're still selling the game at a discounted price on steam. Better to buy it on the PC for mods as always especially if it's a valve game. They really love modders!

Okay... I agree - it's short... But have you ever heard of Team Fortress 2? Day of Defeat Source? Half-Life 2 Deathmatch? Counter-Strike: Source? They're all EXCELENT games by Valve, yet none of them have a single player option. I only think Valve put in a single player on this game to add a little story in to it, they basically wanted yet another multiplayer game in their collection like so many others. In fact, half-life is the only single player game Valve have which I can think of at this time....

I would have to consider L4D a sleeper hit, cause before the demo came out, I had almost no interest in this game. But once I finally convinced myself to try it... It blew me away, with the way it just grabbed me and made me want to go for the ride!

Even when I got a few friends to join, it got even more entertaining! One thing I really liked about it was when You have friends playing with you, you keep constant communication because it gives you a reason to talk to one another, and laugh at eachother. A.K.A. it feels like being in the arcade with your buddies right next to you on a four player game... except you don't have to keep dumping quarters in a machine to keep the fun going!

Great score. I still think the 9/10 for graphics is too high. The game (especially the 360 version is plagued with pop-in. Sometimes an object won't appear on screen until you're 6 feet or closer. It's hard to justify a 9/10 when much prettier games have been getting 8/10 and 8.5/10 for their graphics.

But can this pull me away from R2 and Gears 2 co-op? Hmmm. That remains to be seen.

I've never seen pop in on Left 4 Dead. I have however run into pop in on Resistance 2 and Gears of War 2.

The film grain and the textures on the 360 are still pretty great looking. I'd say Resistance 2 and Left 4 Dead are about each other's equivalent in terms of graphics, and Resistance 2's graphics were pretty great. Gears of War 2's graphics blows both of them out of the water when the textures load in after a couple seconds.

You haven't noticed any pop-in? Really? I notice it all the time. It's especially easy to notice in L4D because there aren't a lot of movable objects (like random boxes) in the levels. So, the few objects that you do see really stand out, especially when they...you know...POP IN. The zombies don't pop-in, which is nice. The environments don't have a lot of draw distance, so I don't know why you'd compare R2 (which has a lot of size and draw distance in the levels) to L4D.

Both are great games, but I would sincerely disagree that L4D's graphics are equal to R2's co-op graphics. Not only do they show larger environments in R2, but there are more things going on (more object, water physics, bullets flying through the air), and an equal amount of enemies. L4D does a great job of working with what it has because the inside environments make everything really claustrophobic and tense (which is a good thing). Still, it can't hold a candle to R2's graphics.

I'm not looking that much in the terms of tech, I like to judge graphics by halves.

One half for tech, such as textures among other things.
One half for art style, and general feel of the graphics.

Resistance 2 hammers it home with it's colors, the water is not that impressive though the large landscape is. Textures are about the same on both. The problem of the long draw distance with Resistance 2 is that if there's a hill further down the level, it looks like one shade of green. Visually impressive in Co-op though. Yes.

Left 4 Dead has it's distinctive art style, it feels like a horror movie, I feel tense while walking through the hallways of an apartment. It's amazing, some textures are not too impressive on Left 4 Dead but some of them are still pretty amazing as well. Notably some of the wallpaper in the apartments, on my 1080P TV, it's about the same as anything I've seen in Resistance 2. The sheer amount of zombies and other things happening on the screen are pretty damned amazing as well. The counts for a lot for the tech side.

What draw distance are exactly talking about in Left 4 Dead? You're in little districts half the time, it's not suppose to big vast areas.
Wait until the full game and reserve your judgements on it's draw distance and numbers as there's bigger levels like a farmyard and such.

I thought the graphics looked pretty good. The real-time lighting engine is particularly nice. I thought the anti-aliasing could have been better, but other than that the game looked nice. The world felt convincing to me, anyway, and that is the most important thing.

Because of the real-time lighting, great character models, huge numbers of zombies and decent textures I would definitely agree that it is at least as good looking as Resistance 2, just in a different way.

To the guy above me, have you even played Gears 2 on a HDTV? It looks better than any other game available on consoles right now. As for Killzone 2, obviously we can't know for sure until the game is released, but going off the videos and what I have seen of the beta I would have to say that Killzone 2 has a better lighting engine, but Gears 2 has much more detailed textures (not to mention better art design).

Fantastic game when playing with friends or people you don't know. You need to play the game on expert for the best experience.
I've played the demo for 15 hrs and still come back for more.

Truth be told, but R2 graphics truly are kind of out dated. I don't think it's subpar or stellar, but it's just caught dead in the middle. I think that's mostly due to the scale of the game, I've also noticed some weird issues with the physics.

Classic art direction excuse to inflate the score. i guess we need not progress or raise the graphics bar none for FPS. All we need is alot of advertisement ads on a videogame website. our future looks jagged.

LocoRoco is a far better looking game than Haze, regardless of what their respective engines can do. Visual design trumps technical details any day.

I know not every game can will justify your Geforce Ridiculous Edition purchase or whatever crap it is you have, but games don't need that in order to deliver on looks.

L4D was never a mod. it was an idea dreamed up by Micheal Booth of then Turtle Rock Studies, who did AI work for Condition Zero. he pitched the game idea to Valve, who from the beginning developed an R&D iteration of the game.

Valve wanted to hire Micheal, but he didnt want to move to Seattle. so Turtle Rock Studios became Valve South. it was never a mod.

PC gaming is ok, but there aren't nearly as many people with gaming rigs as there are with consoles. 90% of my friends own 360s or PS3s and very few of them have a game capable PC. Just look at the sales numbers of PC software vs console software to see where most people spend their time and money. I use to be a PC gamer, but I have mostly let that go. That is fairly cheap to have. those are the minumum reqs for L4D. I think most people here already have that or for less than 100$ could meet it.

I sold my 360 so I could upgrade my PC because I could see that all the games I wanted to play on 360 would eventually come to PC. I wanted gears of War so I bought a 360... When it came to PC and I went to the store and saw fable 1 on PC and a ton of other games. I kinda decided to sell my elite and go for PC because I want to play Starcraft, Spore, Diablo 3 as well as the 360 titles they will bring with better graphics and more content(See gears of war)So I have a super sweet rig due to my 360 trade in. Now I'm gonna go get some coffee and play L4D online for free, at a cheaper cost then 360 and with player mods and otherwise all free also...

...a free pass as far as I'm concerned with respect to reviews. They counter the lack of story with descriptions of variability when you play through the game multiple times.

Ideally your enjoyment hinges on the competency of the players you choose to co-op with. Likewise the only saving grace for this two hour game "for me" (as someone who no longer subscribes to LIVE) is that it's not a $50 game and I could enjoy all that is has to offer on the PC.

This isn't a substantive review and I've read nothing that justifies this score. There are only excuses in this review as to why you "should" like or love this game. You may agree or disagree now.

This game is made by Valve, therefore a free pass was expected. No one wants to come across as a Valve hater. Gaming journalists have been crooked for years and only the most blinded of fanboys don't see it.

The funny thing is that IGN gave Mirror's Edge (which is graphically superior to L4D in every way, shape, and form) an 8/10 for graphics, and they didn't even allow for an artificial "art direction" boost, even though Mirror's Edge's art style is miles ahead of L4D as far as innovation goes.

First off, he was talking about playing on normal, which is pretty much as easy as the easy difficulty setting. On Expert, the scenarios can probably take an hour or two, judging by the demo which can take up to an hour to beat on expert by itself.

Secondly, this isn't a game with a "campaign" mode. It has 4 scenarios that the A.I. director will switch up on you every play. I suggest you play the demo, and then play it on expert if you dare. If possible, play it with friends, the way it was meant to be played. The demo (I've read that the second part was cut in half, so 1.5/5ths of a scenario) has managed to suck 10 hours of my life into it so far.

I'm not worried about length, and you probably shouldn't be either, if only because Valve has a history of excellence.

My reasoning, is that we can expect in the future that any game with strong advertising will garner high praise & support from the media. Socom is a very good example that was used to extinguish my argument. Its multiplayer only, the graphics work & I knew what I was getting into when I bought it.

I would expect left 4 dead to be released in perfect condition. If not, my argument still stands.

1. SOCOM Confrontation was horrible, don't try to use something like that as a defense.

2. Left 4 Dead's length is SOOOOO much longer than 2 hours. Play it on Expert.. the demo of the 360 version has made me go through the 2 chapters of Act 1 over 30 times. It is really that fun.

3. He played this on the easiest difficulty. So it was expected that it would be short.. In fact, every game is short on the easiest difficulty. Play it on Expert, and it can suck up over 30 hours of your life from just the first playthrough. Not only that, but you're going to be playing it over and over and over and over and(...)

4. Then you have the multiplayer aspect which consists of 4v4.. and when I say 4v4.. I mean the Survivors vs. The Infection(with 4 plays dwelling within it as well). While you play as the Infection, you are able to take control of a Drone, Hunter, Boomer, Tank, and Smoker. Game is going to be endless amounts of fun.

1. Play this game on Expert mode.. this is where the fun is at.

2. You can play it OVER-AND-OVER. It will be different every time you play.

3. Refer to this as a game that might become an instant classic in the arcades. This is the sort of game that you play over and over and never stop enjoying it. It's unpredictable, and keeps you on edge with 3 of your best buds.

4. The game consists of 4 acts with 5 chapters(levels) in each act.. adding to a total of 20 levels. The thing is though, is that the levels tie in so well.

5. Buy this game.. I am 100% positive you will enjoy it. Not to mention once you have done EVERYTHING in the co-op story.. and are just tired of it (which will be a long time), you then have multiplayer, which will let you play as the zombies (Drones, Hunters, Tanks, Boomers, Smokers).

There is no way it gets a 9 for graphics. I just played the demo on a hdtv and the textures and graphics are pretty bland. Valve could have done way better. The game itself is fun, but by no means should it get a 9 in the graphics department. I own Quake 4 for the 360 and it had better graphics at launch. The zombies and its "bosses" never show up on the same places neither does the guns, health and ammo (apart from safehouses) and when all of u are nearlly dead and the horde shows up with dozens of zombies running wild at u and u only hv a couple of shots on ur shotgun ull see wot this game i all about, it pumps adrenalline into u and trust me ull do ur best to keep ur mates alive because evryshot counts specially when the boomer and the witch are about or they got u pinned in a corner.
its one of the best experiences online ive had in a while, a breath of fresh air.

Im a Big a Fan of the Dawn of the Dead movie and this captures it to a tee. Online runs Flaws and i spent about 3 hours trying to complete the "Subway" Section with 3 of my friend. Notice i said trying cause Tank or the Witch would randomly appears and regulate on us bad. I wish it had about 10 senarios but i guess this is were DLC comes in at.

Preloaded this beast and just played my first full level on the PC...its no hype. This game is for real. Sorry but nothing about this game was next gen, its not fun, the graphics are horrible... I remember how much people bashed RFOM for having more on screen and having poor graphics now its okay? Why because its on the 360?

Enjoy another over rated game... That needs patching... Again... 360 is so easy to develop for right?

I own a PS3 and 360........I would RENT left4dead......I would rather be playing R2 co-op...MP...and campign mode...at least it has CONTENT...

I would also rather be playing SOCOOM:Confrontation...becuase it also has a little more variety............

and as i was watching there was absolutely nothing great about it. other than the hulk/abomination rip off that chases you through the intro, the game looked like gears or war meets resident evil... that wouldn't really warrant goty imo

My only complaint about this game is the plot line it is kind of stale, but WHO CARES. I haven't had this much fun wasting Zombie since Dead Rising. This is some of the best game play I've ever gotten within survival horror genre. Great review!!!

Play COD:WAW and then play this and you will understand the difference in polish, and that's a fact. This game has one good thing going for it, the number of enemies on screen, it's impressive. But, the story has no depth whatsoever, all you do is run and gun from a to b, the characters are extremely corny, the graphics look like Rainbow Six Vegas(Let's face it, compared to Bioshock which came out last year, these graphics are garbage). Game Informer said this game would be better than GOW2 and Fallout 3 and that's where they lost all credibility with me.(oh, I forgot about how they gave Assasin's Creed a 9.5, they're credibilty was already shot with me) The game isn't bad, it's just no where near what an adult looking for a great game would want. This game is for teenagers that have fun shooting everything and anything.
