IGN: Left 4 Dead Review

There's absolutely no doubt that Left 4 Dead is one of the most social and exciting multiplayer games that we've ever played. It's almost pitch perfect in how it captures the tension and the action of a Hollywood zombie movie. This is an incredible and highly replayable multiplayer experience that's definitely worth checking out, especially if you're looking to prepare yourself for the inevitable zombie apocalypse. Just make sure you bring your friends.

Yoma5645d ago (Edited 5645d ago )

dman it's just because its a 360 game. I played it and it was nothing special. nothing with the graphics neither. it's not as good as geow2 for 360

Eiffel5645d ago

Gears of war 2 and this is coming from a 360 Fan is overrated sh!t.

And Gears of War 2 and Left 4 Dead have nothing common..

This game is an amazing co-op game, which I will be buying

Drealmcc0y5645d ago

Should I trust IGN, who have played the full game, or should I trust this guy in the losers zone who has only played the demo?

Man_of_the_year5645d ago

I agree its not as good as Gears 2 - but the game does look good beside the Gears 2 game in my 360 exclusive library...

Bodhi5645d ago

lol, exclusive libraries are like teases for anyone with the other consoles.

I like to go up to my only 360 friends and tease them with LBP and sometimes Resistance 2.

I like to go up to my only PS3 friends and tease them with Fable II, Gears of War 2, soon to be Left 4 Dead, Halo 3, Forza 2, and sometimes Banjo Kazooie.

I laugh at my Wii friends

The review is just about right I guess when looking at it closer.
Some people are calling L4D a sleeper hit with all the priase it has been geting lately. That's called hype, and from playing the demo the only thing that stands out is TEH 4 PLAYA CO-OP!

EDIT: I'm not being a fanboy, after I save up money to get R2 I am looking forward to buying L4d on my PC if my friend gets it.

N4PS3G5645d ago

Not a sleeper hit says... you? its nots as good as people think says... you?

Why do you stay these as facts ? when they are just meerly opinions

InMyOpinion5645d ago (Edited 5645d ago )

Maybe Ted Price and co should take lessons from Gabe Newell and Valve on how to design good multiplayer? Quality > quantity.

thenickel5645d ago

Yeah and thats just like me saying the only good thing about LBP is the level creator tool. It's simply there opinion and if you don't like it then why even comment other then to spread BS as usual.

Bodhi5645d ago

Though that comment was a little fanboyish Jenzo, I do agree I love Left 4 Dead's multiplayer aspect a lot more then Resistance 2's.

Something about zombies swarming and destroying my friends is a lot more fun then me and my friends running around the map, being so detached from one another.

I played the demo probably over 30 times now with friends and it's never old. Two of the smallest levels known to FPS has kept my friends and I's attention. Great stuff.

I've said this before but people refuse to listen to me but...

Left 4 Dead Multiplayer GotY 2008.

barom5645d ago

I tried the demo on X360. Personally I have to agree somewhat. If played as a single-player, you can find better experiences (it's still good but not great). Haven't tried co-op though but I can see that that part might be a lot of fun. But I'm wondering if the Horde mode for Gears 2 might be just as satisfying.

Bnet3435645d ago

Awesome score. I think I might buy this game now.

JasonPC360PS3Wii5645d ago

I like playing games on my PC to, and L4D will be great on PC, after I boot up my PC running "$200 Microsoft Windows". You know that "Windows" operating system you can't play without? well that, or a "Microsoft" Xbox 360.

pansenbaer5645d ago

You like paying 200 bucks to 'use' a computer? Wow, must have a lot of money to waste...I'm assuming you like spending 300+ dollars for an office suite? You really like giving Microsoft your money that much!? Whats so great about Windows? I can do everything that Windows can do for free, except play 'Games for Windows'. So if I have to spend 200 bucks, just so I can spend another 50 on a game, you can count me out.

callahan095645d ago (Edited 5645d ago )

Hey, Jenzo, not only if you had been playing Resistance 2 would you realize how Ted Price and co. KNOW HOW to make compelling multiplayer experiences... but if you had been reading the reviews, you'd know it, too, because that is the feature of R2 that 95% of reviewers agree is where it is a high quality title. Most of the qualms with R2 seem to be with the campaign, not the co-op and the competitive multiplayer.

Edit:
@ Bodhi, who said: "Something about zombies swarming and destroying my friends is a lot more fun then me and my friends running around the map, being so detached from one another."

Are you kidding me? You haven't played much Resistance 2 co-op either, have you? I have played like 10 hours worth of R2 co-op and let me tell you, everybody sticks together, forms up, and helps out. People select classes based on what our party needs. If we start out with 8 soldiers, you know for a fact someone will quickly switch to Spec Ops, and somebody else will switch to Medic, and before you know it, you've got enough ammo guys, health guys, and shootin' guys in the right proportions to go take on the baddies, and everyone sticks together. The game ABSOLUTELY encourages (nay, REQUIRES) everyone to stick together, because all of the classes require each other for full effectiveness. The player who strays from the pack not only gets killed, but also increases the chances of the other 7 players getting killed because they don't have his assistance. If you were truly a Resistance 2 Co-Op player, you would know that teamwork is essential and everyone does indeed work together.

I hate having to defend games, but dammit I'll do it anyway, because so many people spew false information because they haven't spent proper time with the games they're criticizing. If you haven't played enough of a game to really know what you're talking about, then you shouldn't be talking about it at all. Dammit, why was Insomniac, Ted Price, and Resistance 2 ever brought up in here to begin with? This is about Left 4 Dead, and yet somehow I find a great game that has nothing to do with Left 4 Dead being criticized by people who clearly don't know what they're talking about and I'm compelled to come in here and defend the fine work of talented developers who get unnecessarily shat upon by hyper-critical nimrods that don't even really play the games they claim to know all the faults with.

iHEARTboobs5645d ago (Edited 5645d ago )

@jenzo

I can't speak about L4D's multiplayer but R2's is fun. IGN loved it and so did most of the reviewers. Quality and quantity. But i know you love getting people riled up, i just wish you'd do it in the open zone.

meluvulongtime5645d ago

I was looking at getting this, but not so sure if there is only 4 scenarios. I would imagine the co-op is fun, but for how long? Curious as to how things change to make it not seem repetitive. Think I'll wait a bit.

StephanieBBB5645d ago (Edited 5645d ago )

positive +
- There is not one single game like this out there and that is someting very uniqe.
- Gameplay looks very fun.
- Very different enviroments in each map.
- High replayability online.

Negative -
- The graphics looks very outdated at some places.
- Can be completed in less than 2 hours.
- Replaybility is not as high offline.
- Feels like a mod.

I would say that Valve as a developer seemes kinda lazy. They seem to only settle for just good enough, both with how much content the game has and how good it looks. I don't know if they ran out of space on the dvd-9 or if they just ran out of resources, but Imo, it's far too short. But Left for dead is no less than very refreshing and fun for that it seemes. I don't know If I would buy it based on how small it is, but I might be able to trick my brother in to buying it so I can play it as his place.

callahan095645d ago

To all those who disagree with my above statement, I implore you: please, explain yourself. Am I wrong?

ThanatosDMC5645d ago

I cant wait for someone to copy the codes and put it in Zombie Master's Banshee zombies.

Also, did you notice that the brute acts and attacks like Dog from Half Life 2?

I think, they're still selling the game at a discounted price on steam. Better to buy it on the PC for mods as always especially if it's a valve game. They really love modders!

freddukes5645d ago

@meluvulongtime and others who judge the length of single player

Okay... I agree - it's short... But have you ever heard of Team Fortress 2? Day of Defeat Source? Half-Life 2 Deathmatch? Counter-Strike: Source? They're all EXCELENT games by Valve, yet none of them have a single player option. I only think Valve put in a single player on this game to add a little story in to it, they basically wanted yet another multiplayer game in their collection like so many others. In fact, half-life is the only single player game Valve have which I can think of at this time....

YogiBear5645d ago

It's ok I can play all of your WINDOWS ONLY games on my Mac. :)

BananaSlug5644d ago

maybe Valve should take tips from Ted Price on how to program A game for the PS3.

AAACE55644d ago

I would have to consider L4D a sleeper hit, cause before the demo came out, I had almost no interest in this game. But once I finally convinced myself to try it... It blew me away, with the way it just grabbed me and made me want to go for the ride!

Even when I got a few friends to join, it got even more entertaining! One thing I really liked about it was when You have friends playing with you, you keep constant communication because it gives you a reason to talk to one another, and laugh at eachother. A.K.A. it feels like being in the arcade with your buddies right next to you on a four player game... except you don't have to keep dumping quarters in a machine to keep the fun going!

You should never doubt Valve. As a PC fan, I hold them in the highest esteem. Even though I'm not keen on their chubby captain and lack of tech progression.

solar5645d ago

agreed Fishy. i feel that Half Life 3 we will see a new Engine. hopefully that isnt 10 years in the future ;) plus im praying for some Ep.3 info now that L4D is out. anything HL would over shadow L4D and Valve doesnt want to do that.

Dread5645d ago

THANK U BODHI SOMEONE FINALLY EXPLAINED THE OBVIOUS COHERENTLY SO THAT SONY SACKBOYS HATERS DISGUISED AS PC PLAYERS CAN STOP THIS STUPID ARGUMENT ONCE AND FOR ALL.

O SNAP WRONG POST... THIS IS INRESPONSE TO 6.2

It going to be freakin awesome!

Nicolator5645d ago

i really enjoyed the demo.. its sooooooo much better playing with friends shyt.. played it on the hardest difficulty and wen the hordes come at u everyone one just shouts f*ck! "guys!! they are coming!!! everyone shoot shoot!! shoot!!.. loool.. makes ur heart race up and down.. and u feel u are really trying to survive i would so pick this up..

the graphics are quiet desent didnt notice any pop ins at all

great score

YogiBear5645d ago

one of my favorite games ever but Valve as a company sucks ass. They have always had a superior complex about themselves and their lack of innovation is a major hurdle. I hope Left4Dead is good.

Spike475645d ago

good enough to surpass the boring aspect of zombie shooters and add some flavor to it with multiplayer. They were very smart with this game.

KingDizzi5645d ago

Very good score but this should come as no surprise, Valve are fantastic developers. Tubby is very unprofessional though and they need to upgrade the Engine they use but besides that I love 'em.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies7d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken7d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing697d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker7d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing697d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt7d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken7d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

Most Offensive Video Games That Would Never Cut It Today

Times are changing, and these games would have never been made in today's climate.

wealthofgeeks.com
thorstein45d ago (Edited 45d ago )

Every single time someone uses this phrase whether it's music, movies, books, comics, video games, etc it's always the same claim.

The ubiquitous "they" won't allow it to be made. And every decade these claims are made the claimant completely ignores all the "offensive" material that is published when the claim is made.

In ten years, you can write a new article about how you can't make games like Helldivers 2, Resident Evil VIII, Mortal Kombat I, Dragon's Dogma 2, Alan Wake 2 etc etc etc any more.

MrBaskerville44d ago

Yeah, people wouldn't be constantly outraged if there weren't games that people found enraging. The whole SBI discourse shit wouldn't be a thing if all games were inoffensive. A game like Starfield can make a guy froth at his mouth, so there will always be room for a list like this.

0hMyGandhi44d ago

Normally, I'd be inclined to agree with you, but there are massive caveats.
TV shows like Venture Bros, Ren and Stimpy, and Aqua Team wouldn't/couldn't be made today. Hell, Ren and Stimpy was a *children's* show, same thing with Rocko's Modern Life.

It's not for some arbitrary reason, either. It's branding and IP alignment. Companies are far more risk-averse than they were when I was kid in the 90's. Of course, you have companies coming out of the woodwork to hell spur on similar content, but remember: Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon and some incredibly provocative material.

And for movies? it's pretty obvious. American Pie/Wedding Crashers/Eurotrip among many other "raunch coms" have fallen out of style, and are absolutely outside what the modern day film industry is willing to stand by.
Ace Ventura 1 and 2, Dumb and Dumber, Freddy Got Fingered, Rat Race, Harold and Kumar, and Van Wilder follow suit.

Remember: I am not explicitly talking about films put onto streamers. I am talking wide-releases in actual theaters. Same thing goes for games: Carmageddon, Duke Nukem, Manhunt, Six Days In Fallujah (with their original concept), Hatred, and so on and so forth. Of course, I'd be inclined to mention most tactical shooters like Rainbow Six and Joint Ops as well, due to cultural sensitivity regarding *who* you are shooting and why.

And not all of it is bad (obviously). Tastes change, and perspectives change to fit the demographic.
I should add that I'm a lefty, living in L.A. Working in film.

thorstein44d ago

The Boys, Invincible, Jojo Rabbit, Deadpool, Gen V, Last of Us, Banshee... There are plenty of media being made today that people will claim "can't be made today".

Profchaos44d ago

Yeah but if you consider manhunt which was basically a snuff film could you seriously make that game with high than PS2 era graphics.

thorstein43d ago

The Outlast Trials just came out.

But the storyline of Manhunt was that you were executed. But then lived. And if you didn't do as you were told, you'd die. And the people you killed were not innocents.

It was all filmed by a psychopath.

As we speak GTA VI is being finished up for a release. You get to play a Bonnie and Clyde type of protagonist who run up against the law.

Bodycam looks so real.

People are making those games. Articles like this will always exist no matter how incorrect they are, no matter how many times they blame "them" for whatever it is "they" do to prevent "those" games from being made.

Number1TailzFan44d ago

The UK is the biggest junk country pandering to that nonsense as well, with laws against free speech and expression to match. It got so bad even Rowan Atkinson made a video on free speech about it.

Now the UK raises the age rating on harmless films like Mary Poppins, it's just a load of pansy weak ass nonsense.

MrDead44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

The right wing Tories have been in power in the UK for the 14 years you know the ones that are "anti-woke", blame them for your perceptions.

Killer2020UK44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

Are these snowflakes in the room with us now?

This is more faux outrage designed to get hits. The consequences are unfortunately creating hysteria amongst those willing to buy into it and blame "them" or "the left" or "liberals" meanwhile the left are kicking off about genocide, actual real world abhorrent acts. Nobody is campaigning to censor this shit.

Huey_My_D_Long44d ago

Not too mention the fact that some of these game are controversial for you know, underage porn and encouraging rape.

So either the guy just came in to comment snowflakes without reading anything, or he is calling people snowflakes for having a problem with said titles. Crazy how much brain rot someone can have.

banger8845d ago

Dead Island: "The early PC version of the zombie game swapped the playable character Purna’s Gender Wars skill with a prototype name, which shouldn’t be mentioned directly. The skill name made fun of both Purna as a character and feminists."

"Feminist Whore" lmao

gold_drake44d ago

ill add one more to the list.
drakengard 1.

its ridiculous tho, especially since they'd still be able to find their place in alot of places in the world. except america of course ha. and maybe Australia.

ppl are so sensitive these days. ha. but it is what it is.

Barlos44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

They're not offensive.

And we need another Fat Princess. Fantastic little game!

Some people just have no sense of humour if this sort of thing offends them. They need to lighten up and stop taking themselves so seriously.

Deeeeznuuuts44d ago

Would love a new fat princess game 🤟

CantThinkOfAUsername44d ago

Games literally about sexual assault, mass genocide, bombing civilians, and school shooting. None of which is satirical.

isarai44d ago

Actually it's about fat princesses

Huey_My_D_Long44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

Its crazy that people are fixated on Fat princess when clearly the list is going over controversies, and not all of them are equal. Like way worse examples but pretend the entire list is like that.

Left 4 Dead Writer Explains The Drawbacks Of Releasing Games In Early Access

He wants to launch all his projects initially through close beta.
