Why Rocksteady's Next Game Should be Superman

Jacob St-Amour from Link-Cable Writes: "In the last few years alone, we have seen an increasing amount of rumors suggesting that the now acclaimed developers that is Rocksteady Studios who are best known for their work on their re-imagining of the Caped Crusader are looking to bring the Man of Steel to the video game world. This has been suggested time and time again and we have heard countless takes on Rocksteady’s unknown project that Superman will be the main hero for the company’s next big title. We here have already discussed that we are long overdue for a new Superman game and we feel as though there is no other developer besides Rocksteady Studios that should be at the helm of this project. So here’s why Rocksteady’s next game should be Superman."

I understand why people want a Superman, but I don’t the think people factor in the logistics of it. It’s much more difficult to make a Superman game than a Batman or even a Spider-Man game.

Flight is very difficult to get right on a physics level. Also, unless the story involves Superman not having all of his powers it just doesn’t make sense that he would have any trouble fighting low level enemies.

Despite would people say I don’t think rocksteady has any real desire to go away from Batman. The only ip I could see them pulling off is maybe a TMNT game, and I would kill for that personally.

BlackTar1871575d ago

TMNT would be insane. The reveal would give me chills.

gangsta_red1575d ago

"Flight is very difficult to get right on a physics level."

How is it difficult, they've done flight in multiple games. Even the Superman game from EA nailed it.

He shouldn't have trouble fighting low level enemies which is why you don't make the game filled with them. You give him enemies that do present a challenge.

Save the low level enemies for the meta game. Protecting citizens, stopping a bank robbery, stopping a high speed chase, etc.

FloydianAndroid1574d ago

The flight in the Superman game you’re talking about was not good in my opinion. It felt like time was slow to give the illusion that Superman was moving fast. I mean Superman routinely flies to outer space in a split second there’s no way to make the world big enough in scope to give it that feeling of speed. Also you’d have to be flying above all the buildings so that you don’t run into them. It’s not like Spider-Man where you have that freedom of movement.

TheKingKratos1574d ago

Yeah, Superman returns did all that and EA made it

and come to think of it, Dragon Ball kakorat did it as well with the flight

UnSelf1574d ago

Superman Returns got quite a few things right. Perhaps the one thing that got right more than any other is Superman's health.

We all know the man cant be defeated unless you force Kryptonite into the mix. We are tired of that.

Tie Superman's health not to himself but to something like the city. This way you dont have to curtail his powers. The challenge would be in protecting an entire city that is constantly under peril from a multitiude of crime and danger.

If done right, this will make for an excellent game. Superman Returns only scratched the surface with that system.

Imagine having a fight with over 200 people at the same time that spans across an entire city.

Or making sure you take it easy while fighting to avoid collateral damage.

Im writing the outline to a video game based off of my novel series and this is one of the major cornerstones of the gameplay - taking it easy with your combat to ensure as little collateral damage as possible.

SolidGamerX1575d ago (Edited 1575d ago )

"Flight is very difficult to get right on a physics level."

There's flight in lots of games even Batman from the same developer flies to a degree well glides but its still flight like.

FloydianAndroid1574d ago

I’m not trying to be argumentative, but Batman’s glide is not “faster than a speeding bullet.”

Thunder_G0d_Bane1574d ago

The low level enemies should be armed with kryptonite weapons which makes them still present a danger just like Batman struggles facing enemies with assault rifles.

The more he is hit by kryptonite bullets for instance it could weaken him and strip away some of his powers like flight, heat vision, ice breathe etc. As a mechanic so its also integral for the player to avoid the kryptonite.

gangsta_red1574d ago

"Also you’d have to be flying above all the buildings so that you don’t run into them. It’s not like Spider-Man where you have that freedom of movement"

I really don't understand the issue here, there has been numerous games where you fly above buildings. In every GTA game you can fly above buildings, so why would that be difficult for Superman?

And I disagree, the EA Superman was terrible but they did nail flight down and a lot of his other powers. I especially like how the radar on the HUD represented his super hearing. Touches like that would make a Superman game work.

If developers can make a game where you fight dragons, gods and explore a whole universe...I am positive Superman can be done in a competent manner.

Check out this blog that one of the coolest guys here on N4G has written about possible ideas for a Superman game. I think he definitely was on to something.

FloydianAndroid1573d ago

Umm not saying it would be difficult, I’m saying I don’t think it would be fun. Take Spider-Man for instance, it’s very fun to swing through New York and weave through the skyline, but Superman will just have to fly above all that and i don’t think that would be fun. It wasn’t fun at all in Superman returns in my opinion. My whole point isn’t that flight can’t be don’t, it’s that it’s not fun. Spider-Man and Batman have FUN traversal and I don’t think Superman would be fun. A Superman’s game seems awesome on paper, but with his power level and his flight and lackluster enemies, I just don’t think it would be fun. Id be delighted to be wrong.

rainslacker1574d ago (Edited 1574d ago )

The overpowered super hero thing was an issue for the luke cage tv series, because he really only had street thugs to fight. No super villain level or crazy bad guy to fight. He was strong and invulnerable to pretty much everything.

Then they introduced a way to fight hi., which gave him a weakness. Show still sucked, but at least it wasnt a constant showing of him showing up and just doing bad ass stuff.

Same thing could be done for super man. It's been done in the movies, although never to the point where you see superman constantly fighting street thugs. The super girl tv show seems to make her more vulnerable to random things which arent special, so it is possible.

I wouldn't be so concerned with flight, but itd probably be slowed down to accommodate a smaller game world.

For game enemy fodder, they could always use kryptonian invasion armies, or those kryptonian robot things or something.

Hope one of them is a FPV game. They can try more immersion with FPV.

I just cannot believe we haven't had a game from them this generation nearly 4 years in.. crazy!

Knightofelemia6h ago

If the game is crap then yes there will always be negative feedback it comes with the territory. It's called word of mouth or welcome to the internet. Where the truth about a game comes out really fast whether the game is good or crap. If you can't handle the criticism because of a game then why publish the game. Why should people who never criticized or even played the game be punished? Vietnam has some really screwed up laws block Steam because they don't answer us rule. And going on a witch hunt with Steam please. Where's the proof, where's the evidence of this witch hunt. Somebody is butt hurt and has a Vietnamese Karen leading the witch hunt.

Take-Two CEO Doesn’t Think AI Will Reduce Employment or Dev Costs; “Stupidest Thing” He’s Heard

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick doesn't think AI will reduce employment or lower development costs, and calls it "stupidest thing" he's ever heard.

lodossrage1d 20h ago (Edited 1d 20h ago )

They already have AI trained to do coding.......

How he thinks it's stupid is beyond me, Especially since we see it happening in real time.

CS71d 17h ago

Company A has 300 employees and lays of 200 to replace them with AI to release the same quality game.

Company B has 300 employees and keeps all 300 but instead uses AI to release a game with dramatically larger scale, scope, complexity, short dev cycle etc.

Company B would release a dramatically better product by using humans + AI and consumers would buy the better game.

I actually agree with this concept.

Huey_My_D_Long1d 17h ago (Edited 1d 17h ago )

This is key facet. Its how the AI is used. It's actually is impressive as is and really would make an amazing addition to alot of people in their jobs, not just tech. It also has the potential for businesses to use to lay off large amounts of people, as much as they could to save money on labor. I hope too many companies don't go with the latter. But since usually companies are worried about bottom line over people...we will see some try and hopefully fail. But yeah, if its to help workers like in your company B scenario I'm totally down...Just scared Company A may be too enticing to some ceos and businesses.

Darkegg1d 17h ago

Value of AI and value of humans will both be increased with human-AI complex. Each, by themselves, will not be independently better than the other. Whether AI will ever be independent from humans is the fear question of humans, ironically because of our doing. At this stage, most of the doing is because of humans, not because of AI. AI is doing exactly that by our design, until we have failed ourselves with an AI development that went awry. The biggest take is that humans have only ourselves to blame when things become wrong, and we have to decide what is the ultimate goal with AI we want to accomplish. It would take a person with high morals and high ethics to make right of AI. I would not want businessman to decide what AI should do or what capabilities it can have. AI should be in the hands of people with high moral fiber, or those operating on love, kindness, and compassion.

BlackOni1d 16h ago

AI is SUPPOSED to be used as a tool, not a replacement. It's designed to do two important things artists can take advantage of immediately.

- Make the ideation/reference imaging process much quicker and easier (basically using it as a google search)
- Make mundane and time consuming tasks faster and easier so more time is spent on creation.

Unfortunately, what many have done is used it as a way to replace rather than supplement.

Einhander19721d 13h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

CS7

In the ideal world yes.

In the real world where companies have shown little desire to innovate and spent every effort to maximize profits the end result will be the same quality games (if were lucky) made by less people and more AI.

Company Real World: Fires 200 people and makes the same game cheaper using AI and the executives get record bonuses.

Edit:

Lets look at history, specifically auto manufacturing.

In the 70's and 80's the auto unions tried to oppose automation of jobs (robots) stating that they would take peoples jobs. And the people in charge who wanted to make more money said the exact same types of things that are being said about AI. But we can look at history and see that countless types of jobs were in fact replaced by automation, that was of course even compounded upon by computers.

The net effect was that the rich got richer less jobs were needed so wages were forced down by competition for the jobs that were left.

hombreacabado19h ago

that concept works in the initial beginning phase of AI but once AI learns and surpasses the knowledge and coding expertise of even the best human employee than this CEO will no longer need competent humans in that line of work.

Extermin8or3_17h ago

@Hue_My£D_Long

Yes but that is a choice then by massively increased productivity and this greater income and wealth and stagnating with similar levels of productivity and output and not creating much wealth. Usually the option that creates wealth prevails because a rising tide raises all ships.

WARNING WARNING ‼️ SARCASM AHEAD
Sure Strauss and robots didn’t take jobs from car factories.
Edit:Sad thing is he believes it and unfortunately he won’t be replaced for a long time by AI

senorfartcushion1d 16h ago (Edited 1d 16h ago )

He doesn't, he's just lying. These people lay people off so they can get bonuses. If AI takes jobs, their bonus goes bigger and the workforce goes smaller.

porkChop1d 14h ago

Because he sees AI as a tool to aid development. He wants to use AI to help make bigger and better games in the same timeframe. Other CEOs want to replace devs with AI to cut costs and make lifeless games faster for a quick buck. Strauss has the right idea, this is how AI should be used. To extend and expand the capabilities of devs.

neutralgamer199218h ago

There will be few companies who will go overboard and try to replace their employees with AI tech. The ones that will make the most money will be the ones that utilize ai, along with their employee talent, to make the best product possible

AI could handle some of the most time consuming processes. To expediate the development, so in return, costing the publisher's last money end time.

Extermin8or3_17h ago

Not reliably they haven't. Coding done by ai is generally abysmal for all but the most generic tasks.
