Me too, because Death Stranding wasn't it, but still looking forward to what they do next.

IamTylerDurden11602d ago

Death Stranding is the consensus 2019 GotY so far so obviously quite a few ppl loved it.

I thought it was brilliant.

theshredded1603d ago

Death Stranding won the most GOTY awards in 2019 as I expected.

Get out of here, the Japanese and especially Famitsu voted a game by a well known, highly respected Japanese developer...I did NOT see that coming at all. I'm shocked.

I can't say the game is amazing or terrible, I'm pretty in the middle with it seeing both sides and points...I don't want to over praise it like some but I don't want to trash it, however there's plenty of great games these year that you could argue were the same quality if not better, with added fun factor.

Maybe it's possible, just maybe, that Kojima produced something which was just good, not amazing, Metal Gear Solid level.

camel_toad1603d ago (Edited 1603d ago )

I'm an old ass jaded gamer and 90% of games these days feel like a choir to me once I get past the initial mechanics and gameplay loops. Oddly enough taking an item from point A to point B in Death Stranding is nothing but the opposite for me. I love it.

DaDrunkenJester1603d ago (Edited 1603d ago )

I'm sorry :/

rainslacker1603d ago

It is somewhat cathartic and almost has a compulsive feel to it trying to do deliveries sometimes. I just hate making the deliveries to the out of the way NPC's, like the Movie Director or Chiral Artists Mother. Luckiliy bots will probably get me to 5 stars with them eventually.

Knushwood Butt1602d ago

I'm in the same boat. I love the deliveries and building / repairing structures, and figuring out stuff that other players would appreciate.

NonPartisanGamer1603d ago

That’s probably not fair. How many American games have won some GOTY award from an American institution over the years? I’m sure there could be some bias but maybe they legitimately just loved this game too.

rainslacker1603d ago

OK. So you discredited the Japanese side of things. What about the awards he's winning in western countries?

I don't think it's his best work. But, I don't think it's a bad game, and is even good, and realistically, the competition wasn't really that stiff this year.

JackBNimble1602d ago

Go watch Angry Joe's and Jim Sterling's reviews, they're about as accurate as you're going to get.

Abriael1603d ago (Edited 1603d ago )

"Famitsu" voted for no one. Highly respected Japanese developers did.

Maybe, just maybe, they simply loved the game. Apparently, they found it was amazing, not just good, and I reckon they may very well know better than you do.

When western-centric developer-voted awards tend to turn into a western circlejerk in which non-western games that aren't ultra-mainstream are completely ignored I don't see you complaining.

Wasabi1602d ago (Edited 1602d ago )

@Abriael

***""Famitsu" voted for no one. Highly respected Japanese developers did"***

Get off your high horse dude, Death Stranding was an amazing game but trying to make out all the devs were "highly respected" just because they were Japanese is stupid. Some of the voters were not even devs, they were celebs - you should know this, your site wrote the article.

*** "Apparently, they found it was amazing, not just good, and I reckon they may very well know better than you do"***

Why do they know better, because they've Japanese? It's an opinion, opinions are subjective it's not "knowing better" than someone else, it's personal taste.

***"When western-centric developer-voted awards tend to turn into a western circlejerk in which non-western games that aren't ultra-mainstream are completely ignored"***

You mean like the game awards, that "Western Centric mainstream event" watched by 45 million people, where Sekiro, a Japanese developed game won GOTY?

Get off your high horse, Death Stranding is a great game that I personally enjoyed, your arrogant post however, may just have well be titled "I love the Japanese, and I know best"

Abriael1602d ago

@wasabi

1: The celebs in the poll are gaming celebrities, and they're like 5% of the total vote. So you're wrong.
2: No. They likely know better because they're game developers and not a random internet rager. So you're wrong.
3: The Game Awards is not developer-voted, western or otherwise. So no. I was obviously not talking about The Game Awards. So you're, again, wrong.

Wasabi1602d ago (Edited 1602d ago )

@Abriael

***"The celebs in the poll are gaming celebrities, and they're like 5% of the total vote. So you're wrong"***

So they're not all "Highly respected Japanese developers" as you initially stated. Some were videogame celebrities, some were devs whose work has received negative critical reception in the past. They were not all highly respected, they were not all devs, So how are I wrong?

**"They likely know better because they're game developers and not a random internet rager. So you're wrong"***

It's an opinion, the fact that they are videogame developers makes no difference in the context as to whether someone likes a game or not and does not make their opinion any more valuable than that of anyone else, Dev or otherwise.

**""The Game Awards is not developer-voted, western or otherwise. So no. I was obviously not talking about The Game Awards. So you're, again, wrong."***

There is an element of input from the development and other videogame industry personalities so no, not wrong. You also failed to address the point that the game awards , a western centric videogame awards show voted a Japanese game as it's GOTY completely undermining your Ill thought out theory that Western devs vote only for western games.

Certain elements of the N4G community may be happy not to think for themselves and blindly upvote your incorrect, ignorant and aloof comments but some of us have the ability to think for ourselves.

You're not right just because you say you are. Your argument is horsesh*t and completely undermines the many Western devs and industry personal working hard to deliver quality products for people in all markets.

Abriael1602d ago (Edited 1602d ago )

I could summarize your whole wall of text with "Your argument is horsesh*t because I say so." None of your ridiculous "counterpoints" makes any sense at all.

My argument absolutely in no way undermine anyone's work, but it's a well-known fact anyone who observes the industry carefully knows that western developers tend to honor their own, just like Japanese developers do the same. People tend to like things similar to what they make, so it's pretty obvious that they'd vote for people with a similar development culture.

Sorry not sorry if this triggers you, but the fact that people obviously disagree with you doesn't mean that they're blind. It means that most likely you are.

Have a nice day.

Wasabi1602d ago (Edited 1602d ago )

@Abriael

***"the fact that people obviously disagree"***

Yes, because disagrees on N4G are always a true and accurate indication of fact and never a knee jerk reaction to something written that is somehow perceived as a threat to that person's preferred platform and somehow hurts their feelings.

Christopher1602d ago (Edited 1602d ago )

@Wasabi he didn't say "all were developers" just that those who were developers voted for it.

@Abriael: not even Famitsu votes for non-mainstream games from the West most of the time.

2018- Smash Bros./MHW
2017- Zelda/DQXI
2016- Pokemon
2015- Splatoon
2014- Yo-kai Watch 2

We have to go back five years until we get a result that isn't also big in the West. Sure, they're Japanese games, they practically ignore the Western games, but the games selected sell mostly outside of Japan as well and are embraced by the West. While they originate in Japan, they get most of their sales out of the West.

The 10th Rider1602d ago

I think Death Stranding has the edge because it is such a polarizing game.

The people that hate it obviously won't give it game of the year.

The people that love it absolutely will give it game of the year.

Other titles have no clear winner and there is a half dozen or so games the award will be split between them.

Even if 50% of reviewers hated Death Stranding and 50% absolutely loved it, it would win half the awards.

IamTylerDurden11602d ago

Fox

Death Stranding has more game of the year Awards than any other game this year.

Not just in Japan, worldwide.

For those keeping score, Japanese media outlets only had 4 representatives vote on the Game Awards despite most of the actual games being voted on were made by Japanese developers. US had 24 and UK had 9. I got to imagine if Japan was properly represented, DS would have definitely won this year. Hope that changes in the future. I just don't see how you can vote on all these Japanese games without getting opinions from actual Japanese people.

yomfweeee1603d ago

Why should countries get votes based on developer country?

United States and UK are the biggest console markets.

Veneno1603d ago

Why not let Johnny and Jane cellphone gamer pick the goty? There's more of them than anyone. Your point fails.

jbrock111603d ago

No, it's actually China, the US, then Japan. China had even less representatives at 3. UK isn't even top 5 yet they get 9? Just doesn't make much sense to me.

yomfweeee1602d ago

@venono, this ain't nickelodeon
@jb, China is not the biggest CONSOLE market.

TK-661602d ago

@jbrock11

If your country of origin plays a role in your opinion of games then you shouldn't be a critic.

But didnt a Japanese game win GotY? And in my opinion the far superior one at that.

DarXyde1602d ago

Krangs_Uncle,

I'm honestly surprised to not see Gears 5 on this list at all. I've not played it, but I've heard nothing but positive things about it (Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation withstanding) from being a technical masterclass and feeling authentically like Gears of War.

In its defense though, Devil May Cry V, Sekiro, Resident Evil 2, and Death Stranding all came out this year as well. Not really an easy year to win. More than anything, I'm very happy to see such a great outing by Capcom this year.

Still, good to see Death Stranding getting so many nods. It's a genuinely unique title in an industry living in fear of fighting against convention.

IamTylerDurden11602d ago

Jester

How far u get in Death STRANDING?

U seem to know Sekiro is superior.

Did u make it to Chapter 4? How many hours?

DaDrunkenJester1602d ago

@Tyler

Oh you mean chapter 4 where it just turns into a boring corridor shooter with the easiest boss fight ever? oooOOOOoo so cool.

jbrock111602d ago

@yomfweeee I'm going by total revenues. Who cares how much consoles are being sold if other countries are spending more on actual games? Regardless though, I don't think anyone can disagree that Japan needs more representation considering the amount of Japanese developed games out there.

Before Miyazaki Retires, We Need To Get A Sekiro Sequel

A sequel to the studio's acclaimed title, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, would be the perfect swan song for long-time video game director Hidetaka Miyazaki.

H933d ago

Man you didn't have to do me like that with the title

LoveSpuds33d ago

I just don't see it happening given the success of Elden Ring. I think we'll be seeing a sequel to Elden Ring before anything else.

Demetrius33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

I'm not into souls games but it's good to see that this dev studio stick to what makes their titles unique, there's alot of souls copy n pasted games but they rarely get talked about cause they're looked at as copies and not original created ideas, the souls games are unique cause they offer they're own identity instead imitating I respect that

jznrpg33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

Or Bloodborne 2 preferably both but that’s a lot to ask if he plans on retiring sooner than later

Leeroyw33d ago

Bloodborne 2 or I'd simply love a 60fps remaster. I'd also love a bloodborne randomiser option.

toxic-inferno32d ago

I'm definitely holding out hope for a Bloodborne 60fps remaster still. Some extra features thrown in would be nice too.

With regards to a sequel, I'd actually rather From Software make another new IP with a different setting. That is what made Bloodborne so good - the fact that it took a proven formula and applied it to a completely new setting.

anast32d ago

The hype would be insane if they announced Bloodborne 2.

Inverno33d ago

What if they made a Sekiro/Bloodborne mix?

I regret i never played it, like many other great games!! Still on my radar, when i become retro gamer in a year or two with all this gaas crap happening around

Psychonaut8536d ago

Absolutely. Amazing art design, and didn’t have the Bloodborne problem so it runs at 60FPS on newer hardware, which is amazing given the reaction based gameplay

Cacabunga36d ago

Wait did it get a next gen patch??

Sciurus_vulgaris36d ago

This one title that never clicked with me. I enjoyed Dark Souls, Demon Souls and Bloodborne, but I never warmed up to Sekiro’s parry-focused combat. I honestly gave up on the game at about the half way point.

Armyofdarkness36d ago

Me too. But after the Stellar Blade demo and parrying like crazy I’m tempted to go back and play this again

Inverno36d ago

Took me a couple years too get into when I first bought it. I had gotten so used to Bloodborne that the gameplay was genuinely confusing me. Picked it up a third time and clicked. The game is souls stripped of all its RPG elements and left with nothing but it's combat. It's Souls at its pureness but I can see why the combat would turn people off. That's why I liked it so much tho, without the choice of weapons it's very focused on a specific style. I think a sequel with a small selection of weapons but each fleshed out would be the right step.

Sciurus_vulgaris36d ago

My problem with Sekiro was the combat, I didn’t find it as engaging as Bloodborne, DarkSouls due to the lack of RPG elements. I even found action games like Ninja Gaiden 1-2 and Ghost of Tsushima more engaging as well.

The 7 Best Souls-Like Games - Mastering the Challenge

The Souls-like genre remains popular, along with FromSoftware's classics there are many contenders. But which are the best Souls-like games?

toxic-inferno44d ago

Hmm... In my opinion, the 7 best are the 6 made by FromSoftware (DeS, DS1, DS2, DS3, BB and ER), then Lies of P. But each to their own.

kevco3344d ago

Still DS1? You don't feel it's been surpassed yet?

Demon's Souls has the remake of course, but DS1 has surely been outdated?

Smellsforfree44d ago

I think that the DS1 remake is better looking than DS2. The interior lighting matched with the low resolution textures in DS2 is very garish, IMO.

Besides graphics, what do you mean by DS1 being "outdated"? I'm someone who played through Elden Ring and just recently played through the DS series, and as far as gameplay went, there were all very similar.

Cacabunga44d ago

I haven’t played many but Bloodborne and NIOH1 are on top of my list.. had a blast with these 2

toxic-inferno44d ago

For world design and interconnectedness (that's a word, right?) DS1 is yet to be beaten.

anast12d ago

All great games beside DS2.

toxic-inferno12d ago

I would agree, but there are some things in DS2 that are great and incredibly memorable. It tries to do things differently, and there are some amazingly cinematic moments.

Of course, there's also poor level design (particularly the interconnectivity of the world), questionable combat choices and some of the worst boss runs since the early days of video games...

anast12d ago

True. I can't disagree the game has some moments.
