Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga is Exclusive to Xbox & PC

Ninja Theory’s Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga was one of the standout surprises from The Game Awards 2019. No one expected it and we certainly didn’t expect the visual fidelity it offered in-engine and in real time. While we’ve suspected for some time that it’s coming to PC as well as Xbox Consoles, Microsoft has now provided official confirmation.

mrmikew20181605d ago (Edited 1605d ago )

Oh lord.

Well I wonder will it stay exclusive on the Windows store on the PC or will Steam or Epic get the game as well?

Damn.

TheScotsman1605d ago

Let's buy a game studio and make a game exclusive to our console, wow never seen that coming

rdgneoz31605d ago

"and make a game exclusive to our console"

PC became a console when? Because I haven't heard of steam or epic on consoles yet...

AngelicIceDiamond1605d ago

You been living under rock since 2016 it seems.

SierraGuy1605d ago

If Ms loses the next console gen (and all looking that way so far) they will be going full PC in 6 years...100% exclusives and all.

D__RAiL1605d ago

@SierraGuy and they are still wining even if they come behind Sony or Nintendo. Anyone of these companies have such crazy profit margins when it comes to games sold on their platforms.

TheScotsman1605d ago

Nobody cares about it being on pc as well as console. It's a Microsoft exclusive end of. PC gamers need to get a grip. Us console gamers couldn't care less about your specs and your superior hardware. I just wanna play on my console so get over it please

bluebenjamin1605d ago

I thought Xbox didn’t have exclusives so yall have said

gamer78041605d ago

well exclusive to the Platforms in which the Publisher holds ownership of, which is in this case all Microsoft platforms, Xbox and Windows.

Obscure_Observer1605d ago

@TheScotsman

"Let's buy a game studio and make a game exclusive to our console, wow never seen that coming"

Lol! You wouldn´t believe how many people tought Xbox would become a third party publisher!

S2Killinit1605d ago (Edited 1605d ago )

Maybe I’ll take a look on PC then.

fiveby91604d ago

Well that was expected. Makes no difference to me. I will likely own both consoles anyway....

Jrios3551604d ago

Well considering the fact that Microsoft had purchased Obsidian Emtertainment sometime before The Outer Worlds was announce (And was still released for PS4), I can see why this article is being made.

Atanasrikard1604d ago

@jrios355

Microsoft acquired Obsidian one month before Outer Worlds was announced. Even when they announced the acquisition they stated that games already in development for multiple systems would still come out on those systems.

SyntheticForm1605d ago (Edited 1605d ago )

That's great, actually.

The baseline won't be the low powered Xbox One S - hell not even the Xbox One X. They won't have to cater to low specs. They're really making this a true next-gen project.

I have no doubt this game will look utterly fantastic now.

D__RAiL1605d ago

actually all the tweet says is its coming to Xbox and PC. So do not be surprised to see most games come to XOX and XOS too for the first couple years. They can just use some type of render scaling and have a decent product. Dynamic Resolution is coming a long way and they are actually learning a lot just from the compression codecs used to stream games.

Christopher1605d ago

It's my understanding that Microsoft's plan is for backward and forward compatibility. While that is definitely aimed at next-gen console output, they still, by all accounts, want it playable on Xbox One consoles as well.

DaDrunkenJester1605d ago

This title is misleading. All the Twitter comment says from Aaron is that it is an Xbox & PC exclusive... not specifically a Series X exclusive.

DiRtY1605d ago

That logic is broken. I have read it so many times, it is just wrong.

Games are scale able.

PC games look awesome and run on thousands of different systems. There is no holding back here!

I play the crap out of Modern Warfare on PC right now. Everything on Ultra / high, 160 FPS, 1080p and it looks great.

You can run this on a slower machine with less details though and MY experience on a beastly machine won’t suffer from it. It is that simple.

DJStotty1604d ago (Edited 1604d ago )

@D-Rail

Or do like they said they would do and program the game for the most recent console (Series X) and then the game will recognise which console it is being ran on and adjust the settings accordingly.

Exactly like now how a game will only let you adjust graphics settings if your running it on an Xbox one X.

This should be common knowledge by now

Windows Store and most likely Steam.

GamePass will be exclusive to Windows Store

NiteX1605d ago

It will be on Steam. I mean even Gears 5 came to Steam...

D__RAiL1605d ago

Microsofts new trend is releasing on Windows Store, PC Game Pass, Steam and I would not be surprised if it also releases on Epic Store because of the nice publishing cut with a UE Game.

neutralgamer19921605d ago

It's no just Sony. Epic/Sony are going to be tight this coming generation

CaptainHenry9161604d ago (Edited 1604d ago )

I'm glad it's coming to PC. Not exclusive to Xbox series X? So you can buy it for the Xbox one slim 😂

Well seeing the ms still owns windows I'd say it's pretty exclusive to Microsoft. Also since xbox is the only console you can play it on, still exclusive there.
So I must be missing what your seeing because all I see is you not playing it unless it's on a Microsoft owned console or os

MadLad1605d ago

Exactly. It's a MS EXCLUSIVE. Do you want the console, where more copies (systems) will likely sell? Or do you want it on PC, where MS basically owns the gaming OS.

SyntheticForm1605d ago

I don't know why oppo-fanboys are still obsessed with Microsoft not making Xbox exclusives anymore. Xbox and PC users don't care, and we're happy about it.

Why do Sony fanboys always feel the need to slide in, plop down, and be all "But it's not an Xbox exclusive hurr durr" when they know it's still a Microsoft exclusive?

People using an Xbox SX or PC don't care; they just have a next-gen title to look forward to.

fathertime44641605d ago

@syntheticform
Sony fanboys are obsessed with the fact that ms owns and supports two formats because they only have the one. Ultimately its sony cutting themselves short in sales.
I know I know, but ps4 sold 100million units. Well the Microsoft ecosystem has several billion units. Microsoft would be stupid not to support its main bread and butter like they used to. Shit if sony put their 1st party games on pc like ms does they'd be worth probably a trillion dollars, instead they're worthless than Nintendo. And considering Sony does a ton of other things other than gaming, that's just sad

Knushwood Butt1605d ago

It's about killer apps and system sellers.

If it is available on PC then it dilutes any impact as a system seller for the XSX.

But oh yeah, I forgot that MS don't care about system sales any more so none on the above matters anyway. /s

SegaGamer1605d ago (Edited 1605d ago )

@SyntheticForm

I agree. I'm gaming on pc 99% of the time, I'm very happy for all Xbox games to come to pc. I'm not sure why some people think this is something to make fun of Microsoft about, because I wouldn't have it any other way.

SyntheticForm1605d ago

@Sega

Exactly. Also, you can tell that many of these people claiming that they're going to be playing on PC are only publicly announcing this because they think it makes Xbox users upset.

Maybe they are actually planning to buy it for PC, but I would wager that a lot of them are simply saying that because they want to say that they 'skipped over Xbox.'

'Woooooo - look at me - I can buy it on PC and skip over your precious Xbox muahahahaha.' Nobody cares where you buy it, or even if you buy it at all.

1605d ago
BlackRaven85_11605d ago

Well. It's better support than Sony has ever done for the Vita and Vue, too.

badz1491605d ago

@fathertime4464

"Ultimately its sony cutting themselves short in sales."
"Well the Microsoft ecosystem has several billion units."

LOL dumber than a rock!

how many have Gears, Forza and other MS's published games that have come to PC day 1 sold? any of them touching Horizon or GoW or Spider-man numbers yet?

BILLIONS yet MS suck so hard at selling games they can't outsell Sony selling only to 100mil consoles hahahaha!

gravedigger1603d ago (Edited 1603d ago )

Hellblade is multiplatform title, don't need to buy shitty Xbox console to play this. Thank you, MS. Even will play it for 1$. Thank you MS, you don't deserve more than 1$

fathertime44641603d ago

@gravedigger
Well son we now know that you cant Wright well.
The problem with your statement is that hellblade is multiplatform, hellblade 2 is not. You see there was this little thing called an acquisition after the release of the first on. An acquisition is when something is bought, in this cas it was hellblades developers. So save your dollar son, I don't think a trillion dollar company is worried about your broke ass anyways

Its exclusive to Microsoft platforms... so that pretty much fits the definition of the word.

Studio-YaMi1605d ago

You can't play it unless you have an Xbox(console) or a PC, how is that not a true exclusive?

Most people don't want to indulge in PC gaming or building a gaming rig(or have the money for it), this is great news to us PC gamers, kudos to Microsoft for this great policy, more fanbase to a franchise = more sales and potentially new game in the series.

Not so much of a fan of Ninja Theory though ...

Anomander1605d ago

That's like saying God Fall is not a true Exclusive...

Xavi4K1605d ago

There are many reasons to own an xbox.

1- if you want to play microsoft exclusives without paying tons of dollars Your best bit is Xbox.

2- if you want to play microsoft games on couch with ease of use ( i know pc can be connected to tv or even streamed but common its not as convenient as console).
3- to many people xbox game pass is amazing service and although it’s available on pc not every title available on xbox is also available on pc.
4- if you plan to invest in cloud service like Xcloud you would probably think of getting xbox...play your game on your console at home then pick up your phone and finish what you started while you are riding the metro.

I don't think MS cares whether you buy it on PC or XB. If you buy either or both platforms MS gets the same amount of money.

The_Sage1605d ago

Difference is, Neo... Most of us already have PCs so we have no incentive to buy the new Xbox to play the game.

Christopher1605d ago

Depends on if it's on Windows store only or also on Steam. If it's on Steam, it will definitely not be the same.

NeoGamer2321605d ago

@The_Sage
Again, not sure MS really cares. Selling consoles is not profitable for any of the gaming companies. At the start of the gen they sell them for break even or a loss. As the gen the progresses they start making a few bucks, but most of that goes into R&D of the next console.

The profits come from the subscription services and game sale royalties. Whether that is on PC or XB MS couldn't care less. The only reason companies make consoles is that 90% of people do not want to fiddle around with a PC configuration in their living room. By making consoles they make it easy for people to play games on their TVs and therefore expand the size of the gaming market. There is always all this hype over the console wars, but in reality the consoles is simply an end to a means not the sole driver.

@Christopher
Yes, MS definitely makes more from Windows Store game sales.

ocelot071605d ago

This is true. Microsoft will get my £1 for that month of Gamepass I take out to play this game.

Obscure_Observer1605d ago

BillyG0AT1605d ago

sadly? what kind of gamer would want to be restricted in the video games they can play?

NeoGamer2321605d ago

Brand fanboys that think that eventually certain companies will drop out because they don't sell enough consoles.

What people don't realize is that consoles are a form factor that are well suited to a certain scenario. Just like desk top PCs are for another scenario, tablet computers for another, phones for another, etc. It isn't about how many you sell of each hardware type. It is more about whether the hardware type you are selling is driving the sale of software, services, and subscriptions.

If being on top was everything then MS would have long ago dropped consoles. They were third with XB, second/third with X360, and they were second this generation (Yes, many people forget that the Wii U started the generation not the switch). IF MS were dropping consoles that would've already happened.

moriarty18891605d ago

solideagle2d ago

let's look at the other side of the coin. why did HellBlade 2 which is a short game took more than half a decade to develop? If a game is taking millions upon millions to make then expectations will grow and when those expectations fail to meet then decisions are made.

I am not defending MS here, above is just my humble opinion.

S2Killinit2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

In other words MS were never interested in the people that made the ip, MS only wanted their ip…

MS knew everything you said before they bought Ninja Theory.

dumahim2d ago

"why did HellBlade 2 which is a short game took more than half a decade to develop?"

They're a smaller studio that has had a number of other projects they've been working on in that time as well.

1Victor2d ago

This 2 comments from Microsoft worries me
“ Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, mentioned in an email to employees that the company is now looking to prioritize “high-impact” titles and “identify the opportunities that are best positioned for success.” Similarly, Xbox president Sara Bond talked about identifying industry trends and transitioning towards them during her recent interview with Bloomberg. ”
One is saying it will prioritize high impact games like CoD and service games while she basically saying they’re going to follow trends AKA the leader AKA Sony.
We all know that to succeed in the gaming industry you need to be a trends setter not a follower 🤦🏿.
Microsoft have learned nothing they still think that the 360 era of buy, absorb, destroy is the way to succeed in the video games industry.

outsider16242d ago

I've said before, and I'll say it again. If MS wants Hellblade 2 to be a success, they must release it for PS5 too, both physical and digital. Not saying as a fanboy or anything but success depends on it's sales.
Just remembered this is on GP too right if i recall correctly? I really don't know then. Good luck to them.

Cacabunga2d ago

They will close the studio, mark my words. HB2 is a pure single payer experience, took forever to release and won’t sell tons.. MS isn’t interested in these kind of games.

They should have stayed independent and should have never gotten involved with MICROSOFT

DOMination-2d ago

It wasn't that easy. Ninja Theory were down to less than 20 employees and were forced to making a MOBA of all things (Bleeding Edge) in order to try and make enough money to survive. That game ended up being a total failure, so without MS, there's a high chance they closed anyway.

The same with Obsidian (ironically, they were on their last legs because they missed a metacritic score by 1 with Fallout New Vegas which would have netted them a huge cash bonus from Bethesda - something they were banking on and financially ruined them for nearly 10 years until being acquired).

Maybe someone else would have come in - but we'll never know.

Neonridr1d 19h ago

financial security sometimes trumps "trying to walk the line". Nature of the business.

S2Killinit2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

If MS do close Ninja too, at that rate, we should consider possibility that MS’s end goal is to buy more and more studios and shutter them, keep the ips, then when the game development community is a desert of its former self, use MS’s abundance of capital to recreate gaming space under its own management…

Why shutter them? Maybe because otherwise it would be too obvious that they are creating a monopoly. They are shuttering them while keeping their ips, which allows for purchase of more of the multiplatform industry.

anast2d ago

This could be a part of it. I think it has more to do with shareholders, but MS would love the position you are mentioning.

DOMination-2d ago

I think it really is as simple as Anast says.

According to that Bloomberg graph, Xbox experienced a few years of massive growth a few years ago and since then, it's been going down each year. Of course, most normal people would put that growth down to Covid but investors live in a different world. They don't see that it's making hundred of millions or even billions. All they see if that it's going down and that's enough to spook them.

S2Killinit2d ago

Yup, MS is not buying to manage the studios and make games, they are buying them to dismantle and destroy, keep the ips, then go after more studios to dismantle. Once nothing is left, they will use their deep pockets to make studios. Its like telecommunication companies. They merge together and shut down competing services, so now I only have one service provider in my area, and that company is a local monopoly so they treat you however it damn well pleases.

MrBaskerville1d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

Only issue is that if that happened, people would just make new IP's instead. New Ip's can easily thrive, it's just a more risky.

But in time every big game will be either Marvel or Star Wars, so wouldn't matter anyway. Joking ofcourse. Partly.

There's no way Ninja Theory stays in business after Hellblade 2.

It's a digital only release, it's been in development for over five years, and it's a Game Pass Day One, which means it's not going to blow any sales charts apart. That's already taking into account that Ninja Theory don't make games that sell multiple millions, they cater to a niche audience.

Ninja Theory has been around for a very long time and they've served their audience well, DmC aside, but I'm betting on them closing or being absorbed soon.

And still no marketing for this :(

Barlos4d ago

Why market something that isn't designed to be sold?

This has GP rental written all over it.

Petebloodyonion4d ago

Why bother showing me X shows streaming on Disney before my YouTube video since it's a rental?
Why bother showing what movies are coming to a theater?
Actually, how come game companies bothered in them past with advertising games since a lot of ppl used to rent them at BlockBuster?

Here is a simple reason: making ppl Interested in this game by making them subscribe to Gamepass, or buying the game on PC/Xbox, or worse giving them a reason to buy an Xbox console.

Noskypeno3d ago

@Pete, speaking of movies, Microsoft should copy that business model and sell the games at $70 for 3 months and then let it hit Gamepass after those 3 months. It gives them time to let the game receive a big profit, so for that big game you've been waiting years for that you don't want spoiled, I don't mind paying the $70 a couple times a year. And for those small niche games that don't require a big budget and big profits to succeed, well Gamepass is perfect for that to see if you enjoy it.

Petebloodyonion3d ago

@Noskypeno
I agree, always said that there are no financial gains in putting established games that will sell on names alone (COD, GEARS, HALO, FORZA, etc), the same way Disney won't give you the next Avenger Day 1 on Disney plus +.
MS could release game some smaller games with some AA game day 1 while making money for a couple of month on big titles.

Tacoboto4d ago

They just posted a 20+ minute video about Psychosis and how the game portrays that through Senua.

Regardless of what Microsoft is doing (retweeting Ninja Theory is about as low effort as it gets, and Dashboard Dynamic Themes should've come months ago), Ninja Theory themselves are at least trying.

It's sad though. That new video was a really good behind-the-scenes too, and it just came at such a bad time.

Terry_B4d ago

who knows..they might be the next developer that gets shut down..6-12 months after Hellblade 2 is released.

Charlieboy3333d ago

"a 20+ minute video about Psychosis and how the game portrays that through Senua".....game sounds like a bundle of fun!

Tankbusta404d ago

How much marketing do games really need these days? People that play games know when its coming out. I really think the days of the constant tv ad etc are going the way of the Dodo. What scares me more is the lack of "previews" on big video game websites, it only got a few on April 4th and then nothing since.

RNTody4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Wow Tankbusta40 how out of touch with reality can you be, mate. Do you think companies are insane to spend millions on having giant billboards for big releases and TV adverts and superbowl slots and round the clock PR and interviews? Most of the people who buy games aren't on gaming forums like these knowing the exact release dates!

This isn't being marketed because Microsoft isn't selling the product, it's a Game Pass day one and they don't throw their weight behind games like this.

Chevalier3d ago

"Here is a simple reason: making ppl Interested in this game by making them subscribe to Gamepass, or buying the game on PC/Xbox, or worse giving them a reason to buy an Xbox console."

No one is buying a Xbox for Hellblade 2. Lol. Advertising will not change that. Just considering after all this time Xbox confirmed numbers they were not good for Hellblade 1

"The last numbers we have for Hellblade 1 is that it had 6.3 million players after four years. That’s players, not sales, and that includes launching on Xbox, PlayStation, PC, Switch and it was also on Xbox Game pass starting in 2018."

After Tango Game works every one that works on any studios under the wing of MS are probably having a Plan B looking for another place to go thanks to that stupid idea of even if you create a jewel they can axe you...

I mean, we'll have to see.

What I find problematic was Bond really saying that each case for success metrics with different studios is different. However, the studios recently closed seemed surprised when it happened so... Is Microsoft not telling the studios what their expectations are?

It's entirely feasible, but I suspect Starfield didn't really move the needle and Bethesda is safe... But Tango, who made a game that was very well received with a smaller budget gets closed?

We really don't understand what they want. It doesn't help that they shadow dropped HFR with no marketing and I would say outperformed any expectations for it. But somehow, that wasn't enough?

In truth, we don't really know what the criteria for closure is. Specific engagement metrics? Mean play time? Some internally developed index to assess some engagement-to-budget ratio?

We don't know. I think the concern for Ninja Theory is valid, but sink or swim at MGS seems to be a moving target.

The most concerning thing about Senua is that it's a farily niche title that MS for some reason spent a fortune on. Makes you think about what their expectations are. If they are hoping for God Of War money I would expect another closure.

It's been over 4 years since that game released. I wonder if Ninja Theory will even be around 4 years from now, maybe not even 4 months, lol.
