Let the battle of the streaming begin

Obscure_Observer1625d ago

I think Digital Foundry is just waiting for XCloud to be released, so we´ll get a lot more detailed information on pros and cons from all streaming gaming services.

Gunstar751625d ago

They have a video up today. Generally very positive about xcloud.

lifeisgamesok1625d ago (Edited 1625d ago )

I wish it ended already tbh I don't ever want developers to start trying things like locking levels or chapters behind streaming paywalls

gangsta_red1625d ago

I don't think that will happen. Besides the big three are already locking mp behind a paywall.

Zeref1625d ago

streaming paywalls? yall just making up anything to make streaming look bad 😂😂😂

SpaceRanger1625d ago

I wouldn’t be surprised. As it is multiplayer is behind a paywall. And for some even FREE online games are locked behind a paywall as well.

It’ll only get worse.

Ricegum1625d ago

Xcloud will be DOA like Stadia. You're wrong if you think otherwise.

darthv721625d ago

xcloud is remote play on steroids. It has local console streaming (ala remote play) as well as console free streaming (ala psnow / stadia). It's the best of both worlds.

Game pass is for downloads only and is akin to the download side of psnow except it offers more new release games.

Pickledpepper1625d ago

@ricegum
Man, I've seen you in loads of Xbox articles really hating on them every chance you get.
i know this articles is not just about Microsoft but you really need to get a grip or seek help!
Did someone from Microsoft sleep with your partner or someone from your childhood bully you and they now work for them?
Seriously, get help

CaptainCook1625d ago (Edited 1625d ago )

@darthv72

Xcloud runs on Microsoft Azure servers, you can play the games you ready own. Also, Xcloud will be included with Xbox Game Subscription.

If you want some proof here it is....

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

rainslacker1625d ago

Xcloud will be integrated some way into an existing platform, so it doesn't have to start from scratch like google did.

MS also has more to leverage when it comes to content, and if I had to guess, they will have a much better pricing structure. Integrating it with game pass would also be a big boon for it.

Of all three offerings....excluding some lesser known services, stadia is the odd man out right now. They arent just running oc games, but requiring publishers to actually make stadia builds, which will probably slow new content if the service doesnt pick up steam. Having all those partners they announced doesnt mean much if it flops out of the gate....see the WiiU for reference.

I think MS is actually the best poised to make a successful streaming service. Sony has a modestly successful service I suppose, but they're also making moves to improve. Which one is better is going to come down to content and accessibility. All three are going to keep expanding that, but stadia I feel is pricing itself out of the market.

rob-GP1624d ago

@CaptainCook

I watched the video - did you notice how they are being very particular with their wording...

Game Streaming is coming to GamePass - didn't say it's included in the current package, just it's being added. For all we know, they could introduce a new GamePass + Streaming bundle at a higher price.

Second, he says from next you they are allowing you to play your games on the console or in the clod - again, doesn't say if it's going to be a case of paying to rent the Xbox one S in the cloud (like Stadia Pro) or free. I imagine it'll be a charge they try and enforce, but they were very, very careful with what they said so that they didn't actually give out too much info so they can adjust it later.

KillBill1621d ago

The xCloud is coming with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate... so the likely chance it will go the route of Stadia is slim to nil.

SpaceRanger1625d ago

You’re just as late to the party if you think it’s finally competitive. Streaming from various platforms has been around for a long, long while.

gangsta_red1625d ago

What gaming streaming services have been around?

SpaceRanger1625d ago

@gangsta_red

GeForce Now, Vortex and Jump are a few that come to mind and then there’s more that stream your libraries. Stadia and XCloud coming into play is nothing new, even if people make it seem that way.

Honestly Stadia shouldn’t even be mentioned with how bad it’s doing.

gangsta_red1625d ago

Interesting, I guess I am late. I never heard of those three before.

UltraNova1625d ago

Any opinion piece on which streaming service is best before all of them hit the market officially (xcloud hasn't) and with no performance numbers (video quality/rez, fps, latency and data consumption) is worthless.

Gamesradar is supposed to be a serious gaming site...

rainslacker1625d ago

Even after they're all released, the market will change pretty fast, and theyll all adapt and change what they need to. Especially if streaming really starts to take off. None of the early entrants will want to fall behind, because if it's like the console or pc space, once you have the competition become entrenched, itll be next to impossible to break into the market

UltraNova1624d ago

It all comes down to having a clear vision and sticking to it, improving what needs improvement and listening to your customers as you go.

THC CELL1625d ago

Ps now is a clear winner been out yrs and has more games

thatguyhayat1625d ago

I think gamepass is then PSnow. Stadia doesn't win anything at all besides a mention.

Brazz1625d ago

Whit all due respect, gamepass isn't streaming.

SpaceRanger1625d ago

GamePass doesn’t stream. Your comparison makes no sense.

CaptainCook1625d ago

@Brazz

Xbox Game Pass will be including game streaming early next year

Here's the proof

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

darthv721625d ago

It certainly is the winner when it comes to older games. And it is nice they took inspiration from GP on having some local downloads.

UltraNova1624d ago

Yeah its also nice MS taking inspiration from PS Now on streaming in general.

Hardiman1625d ago

I'd hold my horses on comparing which ones better when numbers come in from each and I'm not talking about install base. Best just to set back and wait until we see how the infrastructure handles the load. So far DF showed the Stadia didn't deliver as promised.

gamer78041625d ago

Spoiler alert, not stadia...

Microsoft is experimenting with ad views for access to hundreds of Xbox games

Free games? In THIS economy? Well, in exchange for your eyeballs at least. (Figuratively, not literally... although don't give them ideas.)

What you need to know

• Microsoft Gaming CFO Tim Stuart recently described how in the future, you may be able to view ads to gain access to Xbox Game Pass.

•Recent Xbox Series X|S code strings we've seen seem to corroborate this, with the ability to earn 15 minute blocks of Xbox Game Pass access in exchange for watching ads.

•Game Pass across PC, Xbox, and Cloud features hundreds of games in exchange for a low monthly fee.

Hmm..... I used to earn GP by way of searching with Bing but I hear the rewards program is being revamped. I still earn points but it seems they did change the amount you get per search. I dont know how i feel about this. It sounds like they are going the Youtube route where right in the middle of something you are enjoying, an ad pops up and you have to sit through it (if it does not have a skip option after 5 seconds).

I pay for my GP access, so this wouldnt really bother me but I can see it affecting plenty of others. It reminds me of the rumor about how some game companies (EA, Ubisoft) were toying with the idea of running ads before you ever get into the game. Like the old days of renting movies from Blockbuster and not being able to skip the previews (yes, some DVD had a non skip option for previews). I pay for stuff so i wouldnt have to deal with ads, but even now they are encroaching the very things i pay a premium for.

This whole thing is just..... a bad idea.

purple101156d ago

I remember those dvds with non-skippable adds! Wow that takes me back.

Plague-Doctor27155d ago

@babadivad

Yup. You'd have to pop in the DVD before going to the bathroom, grabbing a snack, etc

shinoff2183156d ago

Such a shame cause even if you don't think this is a big deal what's next they put ads on ultimate gamepass and the free one gets more. This is disgusting. Yes even if Sony goes this route I'll feel the same. We got enough ads in this world ffs

purple101156d ago

Some recent studies show the average person sees 4000 adverts a day

ChasterMies155d ago

The average person should start using ad blockers.

ChasterMies155d ago (Edited 155d ago )

“even if Sony goes this route I'll feel the same”

This isn’t a “both sides” issue. Sony has never had ads on the PlayStation Home Screen but Microsoft has laden Xbox’s Home Screen with ads since the Xbox 360. Microsoft has put ads on Windows 11 OS! Microsoft is basically the bad guy from “Ready Player One”.

shinoff2183155d ago

I know that hence the key word If. Sonys never given an indication of this where as ms definitely has.

Christopher155d ago

I mean, it's not never, but it's not like Xbox. Sony has promoted things with icons on the XMB, it's just really rare.

EvertonFC155d ago

They could do GP free with ads, GP £20 per month without ads, which one would the casual/hardcore choose ?

Christopher155d ago

"Hi, we've received your comment submission. Please watch this 30s ad to finalize and publish your comment to N4G.com. Thank you."

We're just having our eyelids forced open more and more every day it feels like.

ApocalypseShadow156d ago

You don't say?/S

You mean the company that puts ads on the dashboard, tried to force a camera on Xbox One to push ads is experimenting with ads for game pass access? No. You must be joshing. Lol

Wouldn't put it past them.

crazyCoconuts155d ago

Getting people locked into subs and advertising to them is what passes as innovation at Microsoft.
At least they're keeping Sony on their toes with the threat of competition

Stadia May Have Shot Itself in the Foot By Shutting Down So Early

As Google bids farewell to Stadia, recent events surrounding gaming industry hints that the tech giant might have closed shopped prematurely.

"So, it wouldn't be far off to imagine a scenario where Microsoft would have signed a 10-year"

Like that would have saved Stadia. Ridiculously naive premise

isarai426d ago (Edited 426d ago )

No, it shot itself in the foot by not delivering on anything they promised. Besides the browser and multi device launching being easy, they failed to deliver on any other of their highly touted selling points. No game ran at 4k, or 60fps, or even at high settings let alone all 3 together. And honestly had some of the worst latency of any streaming service.

rippermcrip425d ago

No reason to give Microsoft a reason to tout another stupid "10 year deal" with cloud services that no one has ever heard of or uses.

Microsoft announces 10 year deal to bring Gamepass to LG refrigerators!!

gold_drake425d ago

lets not pretend that streaming games is great. and ms cant change that with their deals.

Microsoft Launches New Bing Feature Making Xbox Cloud Gaming Supported Titles Playable via Search

Microsoft has launched a new Bing feature that lets you experience Xbox Cloud Gaming supported games just by searching for it.

Profchaos582d ago

Microsoft still trying to get us to start using bing and I'm still not buying it

darthv72582d ago

It's not a bad way to earn points. Esp if you do a lot of searching for stuff. I haven't had to pay for Gamepass in over a year because i am constantly earning enough points to pay for it. I've had upwards of 161k lifetime points and currently only 2k away from another free month of GPU.

Profchaos582d ago

Do you do a lot of searching because bing can't find anything on the first go? /S
