Gears 5 Final Review - IGN

To be clear, it’s not surprising at all that Gears 5 is an excellent third-person action game. This iconic series has never really had a misfire, even when changing hands from original developer Epic to The Coalition, and the hot streak remains unbroken. What was unexpected is just how effectively it doubles down on story with a character-focused, consequence-filled tale that plays to one of the franchise’s most underappreciated strengths and backs it up with fun, welcome additions to both its gameplay formula and flow. And that’s just the campaign: add in a heavy-hitting multiplayer lineup of Versus, Versus Arcade, Horde, and Escape and it makes Gears 5 one of the best and most versatile action-game packages in recent memory.

For a long time I considered Gears 3 the best game in the series. Now It's easily Gears 5.

Ryan McCaffrey is the IGN Xbox editor and podcast host and the biggest Xbox fanboy there is. When somebody from IGN made a joke about Xbox on IGN's twitter account he made a sycophantic grovelling apology to Microsoft! Not professional.

So if Ryan McCaffrey isn't given this game full marks but gives it a 9/10, it means that's it good but not a top-tier game. A normal reviewer would likely give it 8/10.

I cant decide on which gears is better between 2 & 3 but I feel like gears 5 is the best of all the games.

But it's really not that good... the characters are crap and dont hold a candle to the original cast, the mechanics havent evolved enough after 6 games, the script is dull af, the voice acting is bland (for new character, old cast are great) the multiplayer is massively unbalanced and the matchmaking is broken af - my first game was against a team of lvl 40's - 60's, I was level 1. Not to mention it's just a shotgun spam fest.
I loved the series but havent had a box this gen so havent played it since judgement, I was pretty hyped to play... its pretty disappointing tbh.

I wouldn't give it higher than a 7.

The horde mode is great I love that you can play as Jack.

i’ve heard a lot of people say that he’s really built for the support type player and they really enjoy playing as him. I haven’t tried the horde mode yet but i will soon

If you want to get through all 50 waves especially on a harder difficulty you absolutely NEED a jack

I love that you can finally play horde mode solo with bot teammates. Now if they could just add a save option so I don't have to do all 50 waves in one sitting and still get credit for completing it.

I'd give it a '9' as well; very pleased with the overall product. I've been playing in spurts when time allows and I look forward to it every time.

It is strange though, nobody can argue that gears 5 is better than gears 4 in every way. It has better graphics, sound, gameplay mechanics, world, story, characters and multiplayer modes.

Campaign is pretty good so far, but the real thing that makes this shine is just how much of a meaty complete package this game is. Lengthy well done campaign, full fleshed out multiplayer, and a really good survival/hoard mode. Not often these days that you get such a full package day 1 with no extra purchases.

Thank God MS did the $2 game pass again so I could play this, only ever played the previous ones co-op with my best friend, thought $2 was worth trying it solo.
