Gears 5 Review In Progress - A Beneficial Mutation

You wouldn't be blamed for thinking that the sixth game in the Gears of War franchise is another entry from the middle of the original trilogy's Locust War. Shooting gooey reptilian monsters, exploring ruined labs, and chainsawing other players are the things Gears does best, and Gears 5 squarely focuses on strengthening those core elements. The underpinnings of the series haven't been tweaked much, but The Coalition adds a lot of new stuff in its second game since taking the reins on the Gears of War franchise.

rehash...thats how i felt about playing gears 4. was very let down, the gameplay felt so similar to gears 1 and 2 it didn't excite me at all.

but i wonder... couldn't someone say the same kind of thing about uncharted 1-4? only thing i can think of is they added the rope in uncharted 4. but uncharted gameplay story and characters are much better to me. love the verticality that gears is missing. gears character movement always feel clunky to me.

Honestly gamespot has been pretty harsh lately imo. I liked days gone and they f’d that game up so I’m pretty sure gears will be good.

Yeah.. but a lot of fluff reviews on there as well.
There is a huge trend of Microsoft’s games getting polarizing reviews.
See crackdown 3, sea of thieves, etc..
I mean, when they even bring up “game pass” to boost a score.. definitely some shill work going on.

Gaming is just as politicised as politics itself. People and sites have obvious biases that skew their reviews. Honest reporting is rare. I don't know why people treat reviews as something objective when they're actually highly subjective and influenced by biases that really have nothing to do with the game itself.

4 was the weakest in the franchise for me didn't have much hope for 5, imo franchise wasn't gonna get any stronger after Epic left it. Was cringing a bit when they decided to get cameo movie characters for online play, just seems like a gimmicky grab for attention to make up for the lack of everything else. Rip.

A Microsoft AAA game will always be treated like a Walmart Good value product. It' good but it's a cheap equivalent to something much better.

Here's the ONLY negative brought in the review in a game that offer a single-player experience, a survival experience and huge focus on multiplayer:
"The story ultimately feels somewhat truncated and meandering, but the campaign is still fun to play."

Now I know that Story is the main factor to judge a game (just like in Zelda BOTW or MGS5) but I thought that perhaps
things like Coop mode (offline and online) the various mode to play, cross-buy or the simple fact that the reviewer found no fault in quality, gameplay, sound, design, loading, performance would have help just a little with the Overall Score.

A lot of older games as well as the Forza series score well over there, but I don't know what has happened since Halo 4/Gears 3. They have, in more recent times, been a bit harsher overall I think, but there are some games that they praise as 10/10 (Uncharted 4) that I also question.

We've allowed review in progress, we just file them as opinion pieces. This wasn't done properly at approval, but a moderator fixed it. This is to prevent sites from 'double dipping' into our own review score metrics. So, at this time, this review score doesn't exist on N4G, only when they submit a fully complete review of the game.

I haven't really gotten into Gears since the first 2, but I have to say, I think the negative points are nonsense, especially coming from GameSpot. They've always been strict critics, but the components of the game they take issue with seem more narrative in scope. Gears is not a narrative-first title, nor does it, or has it ever, relied on groundbreaking storytelling. Gears has always been about gameplay and multiplayer, which GameSpot does not treat as an issue. It appears that The Coalition kept and built upon the mechanics fans love, so I would think that's a great thing.

I don't take issue with their score - 7/10 is not a bad score at all, especially coming from GameSpot. The issue I have is with the issues they have.

Again, haven't really cared for Gears in some time, but their cited grievances (i.e., uneven story pacing that channels the past too much and harkening back to the original trilogy) seem petty. Just my two cents on the matter.

Funny for a site filled with Playstation fans, you guys sure do care about Gears of War on Xbox. Most of the top articles are all Gears 5 related ones that Sony fans are swarming to if you read the comments. They desperately want this to fail, because it strokes their tiny egos lol
