DriveClub Is Delisted - Let's Talk About One of PS4's Best Racers

The ill-fated Evolution Studios produced this ill-fated PlayStation 4 exclusive racer, and to say it's had a rough time of it would be an understatement. Its time on the road has almost come to an end, as Sony has now delisted the title from the PlayStation Store.

Sad day for sure. I always wanted to see a PS4 Pro Patch and Driveclub 2 on PS5 running at 60fps.

crazyCoconuts1729d ago

Same here. Even the VR version wasn't pro enhanced. If they at least did that I'd still have it installed.

Problem is they never did a GOTY edition where all DLC was included. If you looked they had over 61 pieces of DLC. I never bought the game because of all the DLC you had to buy to get all the cars, it was insane. They needed to do an all in one game with all cars and it never happened. So disappointing.
Also the simulation style mode was better but your opponents didn't adjust their driving to sim mode enough, they were hard as hell just like in arcade mode driving. Same as time trials, needed to do them in arcade mode because that's what the time was designed for, not sim mode where you need to do way earlier braking and really slow down your turns. Such a waste of potential there.

It's a damn shame. A great developer that could have been scolded but given some counseling on improving their skills in online coding. Everyone knows they can make a fun racing game even before being purchased by Sony. And under Sony, they showed skills Polyphony could learn.

Or they could have collaborated on making GT a mega racer with weather effects, car models to specification, build tracks, etc so that GT has a broad selection of content in a shorter time since it takes much longer to build these things.

But no more Motorstorm. No Driveclub, no mud, no maniacs, etc. Sure the license thing is done. But a pitiful end to a great developer and franchises. I have both standard and VR games. But you done F'ed up Sony. A terrible mistake now now being swept under the rug.

anonymousfan1729d ago

Oh no I didn't realize this was the same dev as the Motorstorm games damn!! :( Just grabbed Wreckfest yesterday to fill that hole. Great game but I wish it had 4 player splitscreen like Motorstorm apocalypse.

NapalmSanctuary1728d ago

I'm surprised we never got a Motorstorm collection on ps4. Its a bit of a shame too.

Kribwalker1729d ago

I remember when it was being touted as a forza killer, but the only thing it ended up killing was the studio that made it. I wish it would have been a new Motorstorm instead. The Motostorm games were awesome

Hey man I sense your still angry. I would be too considering It's 2019 and Driveclub still mops the floor graphically speaking with anything... especially Forza.

It was cute to see Forza developers quickly rush to imitate the weather effects that were present in DC and fall flat on they're faces.

Forza weather effects and graphics in general look like cheese.

anonymousfan1729d ago

True about the graphics! But obviously it takes a lot more to make a great game...

xRacer74x1729d ago

Narrow roads, incapable of driving off road. backgrounds all prerendered. HMMM, It might look nice but it plays like shyt.

IRetrouk1728d ago (Edited 1728d ago )

way more tracks with various widths than just narrow roads, they sorted the track boundaries out within the launch period, and you are not supposed to drive off road, of course they penalize that, what track racer doesn't? prerendered backdrops? what are you on about? it was all in the games engine, plenty of vids and interviews about it in fact. did you even play the game? lol

rainslacker1728d ago

The only thing I find wrong with the games is the AI being done in such a way that the slightest mistake can take you from first place to last in a matter of seconds. Even if it's something minor, the second you do something wrong, you have half the cars zipping past you, even if they weren't in a position to do so.

The penalties were usually too stiff, but the driving itself is done very well.

Other than that, it was annoying how the campaign races were filled with way too many inclement weather events. It made what would have been fun races more frustrating to me.

Still love the games, and Bikes is excellent. DCVR is really good, because it gets rid of my biggest issue with all driving games, which is being able to tell where you are within a turn.

Yea, Forza just ended up killing itself judging by the abysmal sales of Forza 5.

IRetrouk1728d ago

its only really the motorsport series that has fell off, horizon series does decent sales and is played regularly, dont see what that has to do with driveclub though.

Knushwood Butt1728d ago

Krib and Noctis in a Driveclub thread talking about Forza.

Yes, we get it, Forza is awesome. Your work here is done.

Back to DC, I kind of wish I got the VR version.

King_Noctis1728d ago

And it was much better than Forza 5

Well...I was just replying to this guy who brought it up first, when there is no single reason to bring Forza up.

I guess you might have missed that right? I know, his comment is rather difficult to see.

its a shame what happened to the devs, was rooting for them, made one of the best arcade racers since pgr 4, seemed popular though, estimated over 10 and a half million played the game, always confused me to be honest.

Seraphim1729d ago

DC is a great game. If memory serves... I think Sony killed it early on by announcing it would be a F2P PS4 launch title only to delay it time and time again and announce it was going to be retail instead. By the time it released the interest was no longer there and many didn't like it was now a full priced retail title instead of F2P. Obviously the reviews didn't help either.

Eventually I bought it on sale years ago and imo it's a phenomenal game that also had a TON of content. Got the Platinum Trophy when I initially bought it and every couple years I come back to play it for a couple nights or week. Not a big racing gamer anymore otherwise I'd surely play it a lot more. Matter of fact my Pro just took a shit a few weeks ago and one of the first games I downloaded was Driveclub because I wanted to play it. I'd say this is the most appreciated yet underappreciated racing game ever. Now with the servers also shutting down next year I guess it's time to find a new racing game. Truly a dam shame they didn't give Evo another chance and move them onto developing a sequel. Also a dam shame they're closing servers but surely there's just too few people playing so it's not worth the finances to keep the servers up. Which is the sad part of games that require online connectivity.

rainslacker1728d ago

It got pummeled because of the online issues at launch. Before the reviews got changed because of them, the reviews were quite good.

There was a decent amount of content in the free version, and the full version was pretty well packed with content. The season pass was tons of content.

I think the online stuff for the game is still available until the beginning of next year, so if one does have it, and wants to knock out the online trophies they may wish to get with some booster threads.

I'm not sure why Sony delisted it. The game still works fine in offline mode just fine. About all you'd lose is the challenges, and the ability to join a club once it goes offline.

60FPS on PS5: Unofficial PS5 'FPS Boost' mods are radically improving PS4 back compat

Digital Foundry : Whether it's via FPS Boost or bespoke software upgrades, backwards compatibility on the current-gen consoles delivered an unexpected delight - the ability to liberate older console games from their 30fps limits, running them at 60 frames per second or even higher. FPS Boost did the business for Xbox Series consoles on an impressive range of titles, but there was always the sense that PS5 could do more. It's a hunch that checks out as a range of frame-rate unlocks are available for PS5, covering many must-have games - the major caveat being that only exploitable consoles running on older firmwares are invited to the party.

you love to see new life being breathed into older titles but damn the process to get there. It should be automatic that these work for everyone... not just those who exploit their systems. Really wish Sony and MS would keep this program going officially.

Psychonaut85134d ago

Damn this sucks. I want this shit so bad, but I’m not jailbreaking my console. And frankly I shouldn’t have to. I’m not a tech person, but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate? Or would that have to be a large patch?

dveio134d ago (Edited 134d ago )

"but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate?"

I guess it's not.

But it has become a profitable business if you do so.

So no one would pay for only the framerate patched to being unlocked. So studios need to offer more than that.

But this would take more time, polishing and would cost more money. So they shy away, but won't unlock the framerate, either.

That's just my personal assumption. But from what I can comprehend technically, it shouldn't be difficult to unlock framerates via a patch for older games.

... if it hadn't became a business.

RaidenBlack134d ago (Edited 134d ago )

frame-rate unlock should be free ...
We've seen many devs offer free patches and updates to pretty old PC titles, even bonuses ... so why can't devs offer the frame unlock patch for free (in consultation with the platform-producers) for a title from just a generation earlier?

Einhander1972134d ago

RaidenBlack

"frame-rate unlock should be free ..."

Obviously the result of that thinking is that developers aren't even going to do it.

If they had been allowed to charge $5-10 you would see incentivized developers doing it way more often.

People just always want everything for free, but it's not free to make the patch, people have to code it then other people have to test it, and there will always be other costs involved.

If people want dollar store gaming then expect to get what you pay for.

shinoff2183133d ago (Edited 133d ago )

Raiden I might be wrong but last I thought it cost money to put patches out on consoles.

As far as me paying for it, I'm not all that interested tbh. Not enough to pay for it with older games, and newer games have been pretty decent about it for the most part.

dumahim134d ago

Sounds like the modder has to go in to make changes to unlock it on a game by game basis. "Simple" enough to do it unofficially, but to have it done officially, they need someone to go in a make that change, put out a patch and put it through certification, which I believe is not necessarily a cheap thing to do. It's questionable if going through this would then give them enough sales to make it worthwhile.

Inverno134d ago

Many games still have physics tied to framerate, i think it's cause they wouldn't want to go in and do anything extra. Then there's the 10 dollar upgrades they rather charge. The problem is that there's no compromise, cause if I could mod my PS4 and all I'd lose is online play then id jailbreak it immediately. Mods have done so much for PC games and they could do the same for consoles, but manufacturers hafto be willing to compromise.

shinoff2183133d ago

It's not to hard to do and there's youtube videos that break it down really well. ANyway most of us here arent able to break are console anyway due to being up to date on firmware from playing

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 133d ago
Chocoburger134d ago

Yep, this sucks having to require a jailbreak for something that should be standard in our industry by now. I learned my lesson when PS4 was jailbroken and I didn't keep a console on low firmware for years, but now I'm holding onto two low firmware PS5s specifically because there are features I'll be able to do that you can't do on official firmware, so this will pay off for me soon enough.

Jin_Sakai134d ago

It should be a sin to let these games sit and be stuck at 30fps.

EazyC134d ago

RDR 2 not getting a 60FPS patch for PS5 was a crime.

purple1011235d ago

i went to the article and theres only a couple racing games, cant find the button to move page on through all the adverts.

purple1011235d ago

ah its changed to a video now, strange, but il take it

Dfooster1234d ago

Dirt rally doesn't even make the list? Errm OK then.

Driveclub is over rated as well, with middle of the road handling and the 30fps killed it upon arrival for me.
