Yakuza 7 Producer Assures Fans That The Game Won't Be Boring

Yakuza 7 was revealed today and in a surprise announcement, it has turned out to be a turn-based game instead of action brawler.

I don't know, im sure the world, story, atmosphere, and everything else is still great like they always have been. But gameplay rules all IMO, and personally i just cant bring myself to enjoy turned based combat besides a couple exceptions (literally a couple being pokemon and world of final fantasy). Hopefully this can fall into that rare space where i actually find it fun but i doubt it.

Kinda bummed this is where the series is headed, but i cant stay too mad given the amazing games the series has given me so far.

Pokemon and Persona 5 for me, I don't like final fantast because of the turn based combat.

I'll keep an eye on this, but I have lost excitement for it.

@derecktwee1 you said you dont like final Fantasy because of the turn based combat. But right before that you said "Pokemon and Persona 5 for me". Do you realize that those two games are turn based? I'm thinking you meant to say something else?

Hopefully this will help people get why FFVII fans are upset about it not being turn based. Now more people can feel/understand why the other side was not just being jerks. They love turn based just like others love action.

My point is you cant get any more drastic a change than going from TURN BASED to action based, OR in this case the other way around!

I was replying to Israi's comment where he/she said pokemon and final fantasy are exceptions. And I said Persona 5 and pokemon for me, meaning they are the exceptions, then I addressed the fact that he mentioned final fantasy by stating my opinion.

Persona 5 was epic.. so I dont think people should be worried at all.. i know its two different games but turn based, when implemented correctly.. ie persona 5.. can be very fun and rewarding.

Dont care what you think of my taste, but its not like i think they are bad games. In fact i can acknowledge every aspect of why people love turned based games like final fantasy and such. But im not going to force myself to try and enjoy something that naturally isnt fun to me, and trust me i'd love to suddenly find joy in all turned based combat games. It would allow me to jump into games with amazing stories and worlds i would otherwise not play, but it's just one of those things i just doesnt stir a fun response out of me. It's like if Devil May Cry VI was suddenly an RTS, or if God of War 2 was an intaractive story game like heavy rain, you're telling me everyone would just be fine with that?

I come to yakuza cause i like beat'em ups(amung many other reasons but gsmeplay rules all imo), they could have saved this combat system for Judgement instead. I dont know, id be fine if it were a spinoff or something, but a mainline entry to the series but a completely different genre? Why do that right after finally gaining traction in the US? Seems like the making of another Yakuza Dead Souls situation where they stray away from what little fans they have like, and when it doesn't do as well as the previous games they backtrack on US localization on future games.

Im just bummed to see one my most beloved series completely ditch a big reason i like it and put it's future in jeopardy when there was really no need to, like at all.

In the end ill give it a try like i do most games but like i said, out of the dozens of turned based combat games ive tried ive only liked two, so chances are ill pass after trying, hope im wrong.

Never said i wouldn't, odds are just not in favor of me liking it. I LOOOOOVE beat'em ups, which is what draws me to the series in the first place, changing that TO ME is like making a Ninja Gaiden themed chess game and calling it Ninja Gaiden 4. Like yeah that's still something people like but it's a far cry from what fans expect and like from the series. I hope judgement has as much staying power as Yakuza and replaces it as the beat'em up series, but i find it baffling that judgement wasnt the turn based spinoff instead of completely changing Genres in a series that was just gaining steam in the US. All that being said, as i mentioned above, i'll give it a try as i do most games, and i hope i do like it, just knowing what i like, it's unlikely

Final Fantasy has plenty of turn based games. I don't think it's a problem if FFVII wants to add real time combat, because that's what you are eluding to, or if Yakuza 7 wants to go turn based. There are plenty of real time combat Yakuza games available and on the way. Same for FF and turn based.

I see so many disagrees on people who even mention turn based in a less than positive way. Strange. Either way I agree, FF has been turn based for many years, just in the same vain that Yakuza wants to try something new I can see why Square would try something new as well. It does get stale having the same mechanics year after year.

I don't mind turn based and will be playing Yakuza 7, and hopefully FF goes back to turn based when they get bored with the action combat.

The series has been going for so many years now and with nearly all the games having been remastered or getting re-released shortly for many to play them for the first time, I can respect them looking to add a fresh coat of paint to the series and I think it's a great idea

I like the prospect of bringing back turn based combat to games but it just seems wrong to do it with a game like Yakuza that has/had one of the best battle systems out there already.

My guess is: to make Judgment more accessible as a new IP they opted for the proven familiar map of Kamurocho along with its traditional fighting styles.

Y7 on the other hand reads more like a reboot. All new map of Yokohama we’ve never seen before that’s three times as big with entourage combat. It’s banking on the Yakuza name to draw in a crowd.

Gotta say, this is some of the coolest news I've heard. I love turn based games and there are not enough of them. I've always been interested in the Yakuza games but the overly arcadey gameplay has kinda kept me from really getting into it.

I'll probably preorder this game now.

There are ways to make turn based combat exciting. As long as the pace of the combat does not suffer and it flows well it should still be fun. I also think this opens the game up for much more interesting skill branches and moves, a beat-em-up style limits the amount of special moves you can do since you have so much control of the combat. It's an interesting trade-off, I can't wait to see how it works. As a HUGE fan of old school RPGs, and as someone who hasn't played all the Yakuzas, I can say that this change actually makes me want to purchase the title. Hope it works out well.

Sounds great to me. Played the hell out of Yakuza 0 and some of the others. Got a little burnt out on that so I'm itchin for something new in the Yakuza world. This looks awesome to me. Can't wait to see how it works.

I suggest Yakuza fans wait for the game and try it out. I mean we have 7 Yakuza games and 3 spin offs (the Yakuza game set in ye olden times, the zombie fiasco and the excellent 'Judgement' from this year which I recommend to every Yakuza fan as a must have game) and with the exception of the Zombie game, all of these have been fun and worth buying. You never know the turn based combat might actually be fun.

I don't hate Turn Based, never do. But this is Yakuza. For years you struggle getting audience in the west, now you've come so far.

For years i never wanted change in Yakuza, and many gamers in the west has just begun with 0!.
