Gears of War's studio head explains why Gears 5 won't support 4-player co-op in Campaign - and why fans shouldn't expect to see it return.
From IGN: "While Gears of War has always been connected to the Xbox brand, the series was created by Epic Games as an exclusive. And though the series eventually found its way to Microsoft's first-party portfolio, lead designer Cliff Bleszinski shared his thoughts on the sale.
IGN sat down with Bleszinski for a new episode of Unfiltered and found out how the game director felt when it was announced that Epic Games would sell the franchise to Microsoft in 2014. This was two years after Bleszinski left Epic Games in 2012."
I remember playing the original Gears of War for the first time and being blown away by the graphics and art style and thinking how is this even possible on the Xbox 360 lol. Great job by Epic!
In the article he said Phil Spenser was the only person to call him and nobody else. Just found that interesting, because no one at Epic or his ex co-game developers tried to contact him.
Franchises need to constantly and successfully reinvent themselves to keep entries from getting stale.
Look at GOW (PS) and Zelda. Those are examples of franchises that successfully evolve yet keep their core DNA.
That’s what the Gears franchise needs right now.
Never much cared for the look of gears. The over used steroid buff look. Ive heard good things about them. I will say i really need to play the gear of war tactics game. I love games like that. I just forget about it.
The Gears of War franchise's influence has remained to this day with cover systems becoming as ubiquitous as regenerating health. With a new console generation upon us, it's time to list the series from worst to best.

People will hate on me putting Gears 2 so low but I always felt the graphics were too busy to the point of confusion and the combat/movement hadn't really improved over 1. Lot of cool ideas but execution wasn't the best as far as I'm concerned.
GameOnDaily does a deep technical dive into the excellent looking Gears of War 5: Hivebusters and compares the performance between not just two but the four Xbox consoles.
It's funny because for m this point is why I had such a problem with Halo 5 and why I found it so lacklustre. 343 ruined the overall story in Halo 5 with it's 4 player squads because when it was drop in/drop out co-op like in previous games it never affected the story meaning if they wanted to do something they were free to do what they wanted rather then having to account for the 4 player canon characters within the scene. If Master Chief for example fell down a ditch or something then it would happen to just him and he'd end up speaking to Cortana, that's it but if he was with 3 other players it would have to happen to all of them and they'd have to come up with a long stream of dialogue for all of them, if they just kept them quiet then it would come off a little souless. Same thing happened with Gears of War 3 at certain points although to give them credit they seemed to handle it a lot better because they had built it up from the previous games and it was something Gears of War were doing anyway since the start by featuring your friends co-op character as part of the overall story.
People will be disappointed but I understand the reasoning, the only thing you need to do here is making sure the removal of this feature is justified by having an amazing story. The issue with this however is with everything I've seen from Gears of War 5, they've hardly focused much on the story/single player, I've just seen the online content constantly.
I am going to awesome during most of the campaign of Gears 5, Kait will be paired with Del. Additionally, JD was teased as being playable, so I assume he will paired with Fahz or Marcus. I can understand the difficulties associated with designing a single-player that allows for additional players via co-op.
Four paragraphs of saying the same thing before we get to the actual reason.
Story and gameplay limitations.
Meh don't matter to me
