2019 may be looking amazing for the lineup of games on the horizon, but don't forget these eight titles which were, unfortunately, more than a little disappointing.

Totally disagree about Days One. I enjoyed it from start to finish and I am occasionally playing the challenges

dRanzer1758d ago

In resent years ps4 exclusives rise the bar every time.days gone stopped that momentum.
Not saying is a bad game but this is not what we expect from sony studios

Cmv381758d ago

So its disappointing because it was a good and not great game. I swear, the criticism Sony gets that others don't is ridiculous. Sony has to raise the bar every time.... Nintendo releases super smash brother 12 with 3 new characters....smh

ClayRules20121758d ago (Edited 1758d ago )

Days Gone didn’t stop that momentum at all.

Not EVERY game coming from a Sony first party studio is going to be to the standards of say a Naughty Dog or Sony Santa Monica game. And they shouldn’t be expected to be either “in my opinion” Every first party studio at Sony has their own vision for their games, and their own talented teams. Some better than others, of course. But anyways, it takes years and years to get to the quality that ND & SSM have achieved. Look at Guerrilla Games, I absolutely loved KZ2 back in the day, a fantastic game “in my opinion” but after that game, KZ3 & ShadowFall just weren’t all that great to me. But with HZD, they struck gold and created something really special and truly a masterpiece “in my opinion”

Bend didn’t craft a masterpiece, they didn’t craft an incredible game, and that’s fine. Because what they did bring to gamers (from so many I’ve personally talked to and comments I’ve read) is a game that’s really really fun. A game that has a big world (much bigger than I expected) that poses with fantastic detail, and offers an enjoyable story with likable characters.

I get it, Sony’s dev’s have raised the bar very very high, especially this console generation. And some expect a certain quality out’ve the games their studios produce. But also think realistically, all their studios are at different levels, with different skill sets. As long as they offer a gaming experience that’s really fun, and gamers are genuinely happy with what they’ve played, that’s what matters.

Always room for improvement and I have no doubt Bend will do that with whatever they bring out next.

Hardiman1758d ago (Edited 1758d ago )

Actually it was exactly what I expected. Bend is a small team and in fact it's better than I thought it would be. Everything Sony does will not be received or even be like TLOU, GOW etc. Days Gone is not a bad game , no in fact it's a really good game for it's genre. If fun is the main metric one measures a games value on then DG is awesome because I put 80 hours in and it was some of the best emergent gameplay I've had in an open world game!

That's why I've always been a PlayStation fan and yes quality narratives in recent years have played a big part but also because there's such variety. From Days Gone to The Last Guardian and everything in between.

Also @ClayRules I don't understand how you can get a disagree with such a well said comment. Well I do but it's sad.

ClayRules20121758d ago

@Hardiman
Well said comment as well bud. And you know, people are just gonna disagree for whatever reason, who knows. You could share 100% facts and someone out there would still find a reason to disagree lol.

The reason this article lists is questionable too. It’s disappointing because it isn’t as talked about now? WTF? What does that have to do with why it disappointed them? I can list plenty of games I’ve played that I enjoyed and aren’t nearly as talked about as the main AAA titles. Moreover that’s talking about the reception they’re observing and not their own opinion.

I haven't played Anthem, but I'd argue that Crackdown 3 was the most disappointing because overpromised for longer. It was first announced by Microsoft in 2014 as being a game that would showcase the power of next-generation cloud power, and when it arrived almost five years later it was a functional and brightly coloured disappointment.

Juusterey1757d ago

Yeah
and that's literally all they said too
oh wait
that was one line of what they wrote about it and you chose to ignore the rest
So
no
it's not disappointing "because" it's not talked about
so stop with the llies

bluefox7551758d ago

Yeah, same. I was a little skeptical of it, despite the great footage they showed, but was pleasantly surprised when I got my hands on it.

NarutoFox1757d ago

Crackdown 3 deserves to be on this list

SyntheticForm1757d ago

Days Gone was good not great, and a bit wonky. Though the graphics are great for the most part, it doesn't have that Sony first party polish I'm used to. I can definitely get on board with that argument.

I had about as much fun with Days Gone as I did AC: Odyssey.

None of them were disapointing. Maybe you should adjust your expectations.

Saigon1758d ago

surprised your getting agrees, because last I checked. RDR2 came out in 2018. It was also a good game, long but a good game.

Juusterey1757d ago

You're surprised that people are stupid?

coolbeans1758d ago

Riiight...RDR2, which released in 2018, belongs on a disappointing games of 2019 list.

bluefox7551758d ago (Edited 1758d ago )

I know it's unpopular to say so, but I agree with RDR2 being disappointing (even though it didn't come out this year). It's interesting, when you look at the metascores for both games, there's a massive gap between critic scores, but Days Gone actually has a higher user score than RDR2. Really illustrates how out of touch game journos are with the average gamer.

MadLad1758d ago

Two things.

One, both GTA5 and RDR2 has a good number of bad reviews purely from people who go at them over their microtransactions.
Two, there are people out there who will give glowing ratings for the game purely for being a Sony exclusive, which also helps that average.

Using a metacritic score as to judge the gaming community as a whole just simply will never be accurate.

Hardiman1758d ago

@TedCruz

"Two, there are people out there who will give glowing ratings for the game purely for being a Sony exclusives, which also helps the average."

Pretty sure that's the case with any "preferred " console and not just exclusive to Sony. Breath of the Wild springs to mind. Also most of the initial complaints thrown at DG are prevalent in most multiplat open world games. Yet I haven't seen near the amount of animosity levied at them that DG received. In fact I say if DG had of been multiplat the standards wouldn't have been as high!

MadLad1758d ago (Edited 1758d ago )

@hardi

Only at N4G could a console that is highly outselling its direct competition, has a list of goty contenders under its belt, and still have the narrative be spun that there's some magical negative bias pushed at Sony.

And let's be real here; it's all because people get mad here when a Sony exclusive doesn't get showered in 9s and 10s. When a game gets a perfectly fine 7 average, it's obviously just some sort of devilish agenda against Sony.

This is the same site that still whines that Knack and 1886 were underappreciated when, really, they both were just mediocre titles.

It's so disappointing that it belongs on a 2019 list, because I still feel the disappointment.

Days gone being on this list because they feel it “fizzled out” is the silliest thing ever. The game has gotten updates sense that has kept people playing and engaged as well as revisiting it a second time.

They put this on the list probably because they wanted the game to fail and fact is it hasn’t. Every other “disappointment” on this list was that because of people’s expectations with the exception of Anthem, Crackdown 3 and YllK.

And as for Crackdown 3 that game may not have been the destruction fest they originally advertised but the game was actually really fun and I enjoyed it.

ClayRules20121758d ago

We’ll said. I appreciate the updates that Bend has taken with the game. It’s so darn fun.

Juusterey1757d ago

Not "because"
it was literally one little part of what was said

Anthem Sold A Solid 5 Million Copies In Its Lifetime

The multiplayer action RPG shipped a whopping 2 million copies in its first week alone.

JEECE138d ago

A nice piece of proof-as if anymore was needed-that a game isn't automatically a success if it sells "millions of copies."

RiseNShine138d ago

I don't know if it's still possible, but if it still works, PLAY IT. It's a fantastic RPG on it's own, incredible graphics and story, well worth the Bioware name, i don't know how bad it was on release, but when i played years later it was a great single player RPG well worth playing.

ChasterMies138d ago

This a good example of why you should be hesitant to buy a game at launch.

--Onilink--138d ago

Its has been on sale multiple times for like $2-3… and even when not that aggressively dropped, it is usually in the under $10 category of any sale

BlackCountryBob138d ago

That’s good, but also worth pointing out that after maybe 3 months on sale, this game was selling for about a tenner. Reminds me a bit of Days Gone, good sales overall but only after huge discounts so unlikely to make large profit

Final Fantasy XVI Has Finally Given Donald Duck A Worthy Opponent

For a long time, it's been widely accepted amongst Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts fans that Donald Duck is the most powerful mage ever to exist, mainly due to his use of the stupidly powerful Zettaflare spell towards the end of Kingdom Hearts 3. This spell is one step up from Teraflare, a spell which was used in Final Fantasy XIV that was so powerful that it completely wiped out the base game, giving the developers a canonical reason to let them bin everything and start again from scratch.

Now you're armed with this information, you can see how it was pretty surprising for Donald Duck of all characters to bust out Zettaflare and establish himself as the most powerful character in Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts lore. However, now that Final Fantasy XVI has arrived and delivered a whole new cast of characters, a new challenger has arrived to provide Donald with some much needed competition.

Final Fantasy's Strongest Canonical Magic User Is... Donald Duck?

Final Fantasy features many strong characters, but an unlikely character from Kingdom Hearts is able to cast the most powerful spell ever seen

gold_drake362d ago

that was pretty amazing, not gonna lie, i might have shed a tear or too, just cause of pure awesomeness.

he was already my favourite disney character and one of my favs from KH and then to see that amazing spell too. aah so good xD

FGHFGHFGH362d ago

Final Fantasy's strongest magic user is Donald Duck, who never appears in a final fantasy game.
