I'm Worried About Gears 5

The Gears of War franchise has done a lot for the Xbox brand and video games in general. Where would we be without stop and pop, or the roadie run? I’m as big a fan of horde mode and chainsaw bayonets as anyone, but I’ve got to say: I’m really worried about Gears 5.

Lol what have you heard that isnt promising? They haven't even shown or talked much about the story stuff. They barely just today showed off the versus with the new escalation rules which sounds fantastic. The Escape mode may not take off like Horde did, but it still looks like a fun mode with a map creator.

New modes, refined gameplay, no lootboxes, tons of unlockables that aren't tied to MT's, a story mode that is promising to be the largest and most unique of the franchise... so what have you been hearing that makes you think this game won't be promising?

To be fair the gears 4 launch was extremely quiet with the big thing being cross Play.

The gears 5 trailer at E3 was their big opportunity to showcase the game instead we got that silly kait trailer with the morphing heads and a cinematic from another mode.

So after replaying gears 1 recently and getting a refresher on a good gears story I feel 5 is going to be disappointing

Gears 4 showed off way too much before release and fans didnt like that. Now that Gears 5 is staying closed to not ruin some things people are complaining.

And that Kait trailer was not silly, there was actually a lot in it, a lot hinting at story elements if you pay attention to it.

Gears 1 was fantastic, but the series has moved away from that dark horror ever since Gears 3.

The way I look at it, most gears and haol fans are mid 30s now and with the casuals into apex, fortnite etc these days they're not interested.
Same with why hl3 will never happen, us old PC hardcore players are in our 40s now lol.

They haven't really shown anything of the game to be hyped about. A couple levels from the MP. Some basic story info. A few CGI trailers, and the biggest announcement out of E3 being that it had a MP game play mode.

I think Gears fans may be excited, but I don't really feel the general hype that one would expect from a big IP coming out. There's some, but it's not what I'd call infectious and dominating. It honestly feels about what we saw with Days Gone, and most of the talk seems to be more about that MS finally has a big AAA exclusive game coming out soon.

Honestly I think there is more to be intrigued about than worried. The fact they confirmed more open areas where we will need to use that skiff. That info alone is a big departure from the original gears formula.

I guess you could be worried if these changes will be beneficial, but the writer doesn't go into any of that. They think that just because they have ent shown off the campaign means they are hiding it.

We have already seen with the Versus and Escape gameplay that the mechanics are all there and improved so I do t think any Gears fan needs to be worried about mechanics.

I guess by now if Gears isnt already on your radar or something you like, you probably wont be dying to watch all the footage like I am. There is plenty of content out there, just very little on the Story which I appreciate.

I'm not any more worried than I am for any of the other, "I'm worried about -insert game name here-" articles that crop up here every time a high profile game comes up. It's a cheap way to write an opinion piece to just discuss a specific topic that one may be thinking, and is pretty close to the bottom of the barrel for weeding out the "journalists" who can't just write proper editorial.

As far as MS IP's go, they don't have a history of completely screwing up their staple franchises. Some may feel they aren't as good as others in the series, but I wouldn't say they're bad games.

Worst way to show off a game imo, E3 should have wetted gamers pants and get gamers talking about it and getting super excited for launch.
Unfortunatly we got what we got at E3 and excitement is not existant really.

I haven't been thrilled about Gears since the original, but I'll play the campaign through GP. Probably rarely touch MP.

I just haven't liked the tone of the newer ones. Too colorful and silly for me.

There is no excuse why we haven't seen a long extended gameplay clip of the campaign. This is MS's flagship title and you have not generated any hype for it. We actually hear more about Gamepass than this game.

In my eyes $60 is greater than $10 or a $1 but hey let's keep pushing a service. Now the excuse for the fanboys is that we don't need to see the campaign. No gameplay. Now this is ok. Now this is excepted. Sorry but since when of not showing a game is good?

Phil goes on and say he doesn't what to show games that are 2 to 3 years out. Yet you show Halo. Yet you show Gears. But you really don't show us anything. No long extended gameplay. Nothing. Gears of War 4 got criticized for its story. Maybe the Coalition wants to keep as much of the story secret as possible, as they keep hinting at increased investment in the campaign. That being said, I do which more was shown of Gears 5 campaign at this year's E3. I did however, like the " Meet Fahz" cutscene that the Coalition released, as it showed some good gears-humor and hinted at JD Fenix being playable in the campaign.

Yeah I wish I could see and play it right now, but they caught flak with showing too much with Gears 4 so I'm okay with them keeping more under wraps.

Plus, like you said, they are emphasizing the fact they will be taking more creative license with this Gears and doing some new stuff. They already showed and talked about bigger areas where we will need to use the skiff so that's already a fairly big change to the series. I'm hoping them being quiet is a sign they want to surprise us. Or perhaps it's a way to make sure they dont piss off the fans before they buy it... I cant imagine being worried about it though, game looks solid.

I will give them one thing. Being worried about the campaign is somewhat valid currently. The Coalition have said they're planning to show more, and have claimed they're doing big things with it, but when developers are only making claims and not backing them up it's a bad sign.

However, extending that worry to the entire package is irrational at this point. The multiplayer will be having a tech test in a few days, and Horde gameplay will be revealed at Gamescom. So in terms of multiplayer things are looking solid.

Can't make an I'm worried article when people can try it out for themselves. If the game is good, there is no useless substance or conjecture to frame ones argument and the author just looks stupid. If it's bad, then they run the risk of just getting lost in the crowd of all the sites who will happily jump on it being bad.

A good story is a good story. Doesn't matter if its it's own thing, or part of a series. Gears always had good broad appeal, so I can't see why one wouldn't enjoy it if it's good. If only a gears fan can enjoy it, that sounds more like fanboyism, instead of critical thought on the quality.

A couple things Right off the bat this author got wrong. Microsoft never confirmed a two hour conference. Last two years they have blocked off 2 hr windows. The conference never runs that full frame. It just means it’s above 1:30.

Second, Rod Ferguson later has said in interviews, that there was never intent to show the campaign at the briefing, so it wasn’t cut.

Microsoft has flubbed the marketing for gears, but it’s a very safe title. It’s not gonna be bad. The question is will it be great or just decent.

I'm pretty sure Gears5 budget must be way lower than TLOU2 and DS to be honest with you.
Take Death stranding for example and look at how many actors are in it. That alone increase the budget massively.

I've said in previous posts, excluding racing games a fast majority of games the magic number for a series/franchise is 4 (even then)
MS problem atm is they need to move on, forget Gears, even halo. Haven't the sales been in decline for a number of years?
Thats 2 great studios who have been stagnant, freshen up the studio by getting them to make new ips like ND and GG have done.

Gamers have moved on from the series with fortnite and overwatch, pubg etc and also AAA sp games like uncharted foraz, hzd, days gone, gow, spiderman to name a few.
Its been a miracle how xbox this gen has not hit 1 home run this gen.

Halo and gears are popular, and I wouldn't call any of them bad games. If I was a fan, I'd always want more, so long as it wasn't something where I was bombarded with new content yearly like we saw with AC for a while.

Uncharted and gears were about the story, characters and gfx but after 3 it started to feel like the same old cover shooter mechanics, so imo uncharted 4 was just about OK, gears however still feeling like the same old cover shooter (been there done that feel)
Like I said would you be super excited for a uncharted 5 with simlar gameplay mechanics and prettier gfx or for thevstudio to move onto say a new ip "savage starlight"
We would obviously look fwd to a uncharted 5 game sure but I wouldn't be wetting out pants like seeing a new fresh up death stranding, first insane look at spiderman, gow reveal, detroit multiple paths etc.

I'm not eager to see more UC, but if they came out with another good game I would play it. If they were releasing them every year, I would probably get tired of it.

I think there is enough other stuff in there to keep things fresh and varied, and that's what I think MS needs. Just more to fill out their line up.

I just want them to get back to the epic level of Gears 3. Man, that was such a blast to play with my friends in 4 player co-op. Just the further you went in the game the crazier it got. Freaking brilliant game. I didn’t hate Gears 4 but it was a huge let down and almost felt the least impressive in comparison to the entries in the trilogy.

I feel like they’ll hopefully improve with 5. Give us some epic set pieces, crazy bosses, more variety of enemies with unique ways to take them down, and a story that’s waaaay more intense than we got in 4.

That Gears5 will be considered an average game?

If it's the case, then don't worry! You can sleep safe and sound because I can reassure you that if the game is working perfectly, innovative and fun it will still be rated as an average game like any Ubisoft game, I can already tell you that IGN will give it an 8.5, Gamespot a 7 and Gianbomb a 2 or 3 out 5.

The media want Gears5 (like Halo) to fail and will score it accordingly
Just like the media wanted Days gone to fail since day1 (now if there's a sequel expect it to score 10 because ppl loved the game).

So see no worry it's already a forgettable game.
