Stadia's Pricing Model Will Ultimately Be Its Downfall

Escapist's Shamus Young writes:
Three months ago I looked at Stadia, Google’s upcoming streaming platform. At the time I was pretty skeptical that it was going to work. OnLive offered a similar service back in 2010, and it closed down after just four years. Despite this, I was hesitant to predict failure for Stadia. Digital infrastructure has come a long way in the last six years, and Google is a powerful company with a lot of impressive technology. I thought it was possible that Google might succeed where OnLive had failed. But this week I read their pricing plan, and I feel a lot more comfortable saying that this whole thing seems like a bad idea.

Very coherent and logical line of thought from the author. Google is asking too much from us, for what is effectively a leap of faith. Their current pricing sucks and it needs to be slashed, significantly, if they ever hope of staying alive, let alone compete. Even then issues like ISP reliability, capability, lag, throttling, caps etc are another matter entirely.

I mean what is the point of a paid streaming service when you're still paying separately for the games, at full price no less? Where's the contingency plan if Stadia goes bust? Do we lose everything?

So who is Stadia for? I'll leave it to the author's last words to answer:
"It’s supposedly for people who want to play AAA games but don’t have access to AAA hardware. It’s for people who are into hardcore games but don’t mind an unavoidable baseline of input lag. It’s for people who can’t afford a $400 console but can afford to buy games at full price and pay an additional $120 every single year. It’s for people who have lots of devices who somehow don’t own any dedicated gaming hardware. Most of all, it’s for people who have no memory of OnLive’s failure or who are happy to buy games that will vanish into the ether if the exact same idea fails again.

Stadia is for casual gamers who are into hardcore titles and poor people with lots of disposable income. This is a service for nobody, and it makes no sense."

Notellin1768d ago (Edited 1768d ago )

Yeah I got into the beta because I was curious what my gigablast internet could pull off.

Stadia felt unplayable for me and my PC gets 750 Mb down. I already owned AC Odyssey on Xbox so I did a five minute play test rotating between the two.

The difference was night and day. Stadia looked like a 360 game and felt like I was playing with a MnK that had damage to the connectivity.

Even in optimal conditions I don't have any plans to touch Stadia.

UltraNova1768d ago (Edited 1768d ago )

Even then you are an outlier case and nowhere near the public average, considering your insane connection speed.

Some questions for you, if you are so kindly inclined:
Were you on Chrome? Wifi or wired? What controler did you use? Have you measured lag during your test? How was the connection stability?

Notellin1768d ago (Edited 1768d ago )

@Ultranova. Sure I'll share. I'm mostly just concerned because my experience should be the pinnacle of what can be achieved. If that's all Stadia can handle then I'm concerned.

I was on a PC using ethernet cable into a Netgear Nighthawk CM 1100 modem.

I was on Chrome which is believe for the first beta was the only way it would work.

I took several connection tests throughout the process. They are saved on speed test I'll just post the parameters.

Lowest download speed was 521 Mb/s fastest recorded out of 6 tests was 863Mb/s. All show 0% jitter and packet loss. Upload speed was a low of 387Mb/s fastest was 491Mb/s.

The game never crashed or froze or anything to signal I lost connection.

There was lots of judder and frame drops. Input lag was significant enough to be noticeable.

I was playing on max settings because it was determining that from my internet speed.

Controller used was an Elite and also a dualshock 4 although for a smaller amount of playtime.

My connection is about as top of the line as you can get in the US. And with that said I would just call this service passable enough to use if you had no other way to play the game.

I'm also sure they have made improvements since the beta but I didn't get the impression this was ready for most people or the casual gamer that doesn't own console or PC.

Seriously though if I can't play it without problems in a near perfect environment then I'm worried about everyone else who buys a game at launch.

Edit: Oh I did one more test where my wife was streaming Netflix in 4k to our bedroom while streaming Puppy Dog Pals in the kids playroom. I then booted up Stadia and noticed more frame drops. I know I know this is all anecdotal but I believe people will have very similar experiences.

DaDrunkenJester1768d ago (Edited 1768d ago )

You pay for the service to access a number of games, just like GamePass or PSNow, but if the game is not on the monthly service or they remove the game... then you have to buy it. It's not different than any other service.

Your other concerns are legitimate for sure.

UltraNova1768d ago

I subscribe to Plus because I have to, not because I chose to. I rarely buy digital from the store, if I do its dirt cheap and I don't particularly care about keeping the game so this "but if the game is not on the monthly service or they remove the game... then you have to buy it. It's not different than any other service. " doesn't apply to me. This is why I have only purchased 3 games in the last 10+ years I'm on Plus the rest (well over 500) are all on disc.

Shinkus1768d ago

I can't help but shake the feeling that you're the author of the article. All of your recent posts on n4g are identical to the articles put out by the same author and nothing else. If you're the author then you should just refer to yourself that way in the comments. I doubt you just happen to post ONLY articles made by that one author.

UltraNova1768d ago (Edited 1768d ago )

Haha, interesting observation but ultimately incorrect :-)

As for posting the same stuff, you only half right as this is N4G where popular subject matter is posted frequently, if not daily, as long as its relatively fresh news. So I'll- unapologetically- accept responsibility on that.

That said, what's your opinion on Stadia and game streaming as a whole?

PS4Gamer19841768d ago (Edited 1768d ago )

WOW, I have NEVER seen such unbridled and unwarranted hate for something like I have seen for Stadia. I am an absolute believer in Stadia. The only people against Stadia are the same people who still live in the past and buy physical copy of games to collect and hoard them but never actually play them.

People fail to see the big picture. In a year or two when 5G is the new mobile standard, you will literally be able to play TRUE AAA blockbusters on your phone literally ANYWHERE you are. Think of this as the Switch on super steroids. NO downgrade graphics or resolution, we are talking a full console experience and performance on your phone., or your tablet, or on a desktop PC or on your TV

OH and did I also mention NOMORE WAITING FOR INSTALLS, UPDATES or DOWNLOADS. Cant think of anything worse when you lay down on the couch to power up a game you havent played in a while, only to have to have wait, and wait and wait some more for an update.

I have Stadia pre ordered and there is no doubt it will be a success. Look at the Switch, its a huge success for a reason. Also, look at the absolute stellar launch line up for Stadia, it has the best launch line up of any console in history and thats a fact.

BLow1768d ago (Edited 1768d ago )

This is not the Switch. The Switch has physical media. You don't have to pay a subscription service along with paying full price of games you don't own and can't play without the Internet. The Switch also has its own 1st party software to entice people to buy the hardware. They are a proven company with experience in the game.

This is coming from someone who hasn't owned a Nintendo system since the GameCube but still recognize what Nintendo actually does. This is just my opinion of course. Have fun. I would be surprised if Google are paying people to talk positive about this thing lol.....

BigTrain1767d ago

Seriously, that has to be the only logical explanation to that moronic post.

Shikoku1768d ago

I think you're cheerleading to hard dude.

AnubisG1768d ago

People like you taking gaming into a horrible place.

yomfweeee1768d ago

Very few people collect and hoard games. Most people who buy physical, sell them when they are done. Hence the gigantic used game market. That is why I stick with physical.

"Cant think of anything worse when you lay down on the couch to power up a game you havent played in a while, only to have to have wait, and wait and wait some more for an update." - What system are you using? PS4 updates in the background and I think X1 does as well.

Cobra9511767d ago

It does by default. I like to decide if and when my games update, so I have that turned off. If a game wants to update when I fire it up, and I just want to play, I take the console offline, and play without updating. Try that on Stadia or online games. Not happening.

yomfweeee1767d ago

@Cobra951... if you decide to not use the feature to update the games automatically... you'd be a fool to complain about having to update a game when you want to play it.

Zeegamereh1768d ago

We don’t need stadia tbh when Xbox and ps will be doing the same thing but better in the future 🤷🏽‍♂️

Cobra9511767d ago

If they do the same thing, I won't be participating. The only exception might be if I can stream games I actually have, and which normally run offline on my consoles or PC. I wouldn't pay extra for that, though.

Araragifeels 1768d ago

Na, you smoking something. Is people like you, masochist that the gaming industry like to take advantage of and ruin it for the rest of the people. This is why we have microtransation, loot boxes and had online pass in games. We all have to pay the price from ignorant people.

UltraNova1768d ago

Phil Harrison himself couldn't say it better.

Rachel_Alucard1768d ago

The Switch has Nintendo's 1st party games selling it. Without that it wouldn't sell shit.

milohighclub1768d ago (Edited 1768d ago )

I have virgin media, one of the best options in the uk as high speeds and low ping.
The internet drops out pretty often, some times for up to 24 hours. It's bad enough not being able to play online, imagine not being able to play at all...

What mobile provider do you have that gives 15gb of data per hour. Pretty sure 0 providers offer unlimited data anymore....

Tross1768d ago

I have 10GB of data per month for a price that's pretty reasonable, and I consider that a win (especially since I know people with no data plans or very poor ones that don't even offer 1GB/month). There is no way I would ever consider streaming games on the go. I really can't fathom what kind of drug makes someone think that's a good idea.

Cobra9511767d ago

All I have on mobile is 5 GB per month. I only use it sparingly, when there's no WiFi. Not interested in paying $120 a year for Stadia, plus a significantly heftier data plan.

antarius1768d ago

You an undercover employee? Cheering a little too hard their bruh!

Many people have caps on their internet. That alone is a reason to give Stadia a hard pass. It’s like they say, “if you can’t touch it then you don’t own it!”

Tross1768d ago

I'm sorry, what? No really, what are you smoking? I want some. On second thought, scratch that. Anything that would turn me into a Stadia fanboy probably comes with a heavy side of brain damage with an massively increased risk of a stroke.

This thing will require crazy bandwidth that's a huge hurdle to overcome even when you're at home. If you're insinuating that using data to stream while you're out and about is something you're looking forward to then...have fun with that.

Best launch lineup in console history? RoFL. Name one exclusive. Just one. A lot of the titles it's going to launch with aren't exactly the most current either, and even most of those that are will be old news by the time this thing launches, because they're current now.

PS4Gamer1984...I think you should get a CT scan. Who knows what kind of brain damage whatever substance you're on has caused you? It might be worth getting checked out.

steven83r1768d ago

Will this be your same opinion when MS releases xCloud? Or Sony their version? Or is this mostly Google hate?Especially when MS is considering a $60 monthly fee. Stadia started out great with claims of cross play with anyone, then that went away. And slowly more and more features are disappearing. xCloud will work mainly as a play on the go. I don't see any sane person buying a digital Xbox for over $200 + endless monthly fees of games you never own.

Tross1768d ago (Edited 1768d ago )

@steven83r Sony has had their "version" for years now. It's called PS Now. And no, I don't subscribe to it because while I love streaming for tv shows, movies and internet vids, I'm not so keen on it for games. The difference is, I can decide not to subscribe to PS Now and enjoy my PS4 for everything else it has to offer, and the same should be true when the PS5 launches, while with the Stadia there's no such option. It's their streaming service or you have an expensive paperweight. It's possible Netflix will work on it as that's also a streaming service (albeit of a different type), but there are plenty of other devices Netflix and other similar services can stream off of.

When MS releases their new service...well, ignore their streaming-only system too, but if you're interested in a proper version of the next Xbox, that too will be a system with more going for it than just streaming (thank goodness by the sound of things). Oh, and even in the realm of streaming, Sony and MS do/will have this thing called exclusives. And yeah, as you said Google going back on their promises is doing them no favours here.

lazyboyblue1768d ago

@ps4Gamer1984 Proving the old saying "there us always one".

SegaGamer1768d ago

"The only people against Stadia are the same people who still live in the past and buy physical copy of games to collect and hoard them but never actually play them"

WRONG. Being a pc gamer, I am all digital, and even before then when I had a current gen console, I was getting all of my games digitally. I can't even remember the last physical game I bought.

"People fail to see the big picture. In a year or two when 5G is the new mobile standard, you will literally be able to play TRUE AAA blockbusters on your phone literally ANYWHERE you are"

Not everybody will receive perfect 5G signal and not everybody will have unlimited data to run games for as long as they like. Most people don't have unlimited data on their phones, so they would have to monitor just how much they use Stadia.

"Think of this as the Switch on super steroids. NO downgrade graphics or resolution, we are talking a full console experience and performance on your phone., or your tablet, or on a desktop PC or on your TV"

Compression artifacts and input lag is not a good compromise though. I would much rather have a Switch that I can rely on to not have these problems. You can also forget about me ever using this on my pc playing on my monitor. Why bother having a top of the line monitor if my games are going to be full of compression artifacts? It would look like crap.

"OH and did I also mention NOMORE WAITING FOR INSTALLS, UPDATES or DOWNLOADS. Cant think of anything worse when you lay down on the couch to power up a game you havent played in a while, only to have to have wait, and wait and wait some more for an update"

If you can use Stadia, then this was never an issue for you in the first place. Stadia will require a fast and stable internet connection, if you have that, then game updates and downloads won't take long to download at all. This has NEVER bothered me, even when I was on a much slower connection than I am today, I never had a real issue with it.

Cobra9511767d ago

Few people will receive perfect 5G signals. That stuff got shifted dramatically up in frequency, so it behaves like light more than radio. If you don't have a line of sight to the tower, you're not getting perfect 5G (at least in the States--I think the UK uses lower frequencies for 5G, though they're still way more directional than 3G/4G).

badz1491768d ago

@PS4Gamer1984

"People fail to see the big picture. In a year or two when 5G is the new mobile standard, you will literally be able to play TRUE AAA blockbusters on your phone literally ANYWHERE you are."

LOL and you're sure all these telco companies will willingly offer unlimited 5G connection for cheap or AT ALL out of the gate? it has taken many years after the introduction of 4G LTE before we saw affordable unlimited data plan came out and even that is not without other forms of limitation so they can still make money. I have 1 myself for like $40/mth. although I can tether my connection to many devices but I can't torrent the shit out of this connection because they purposely throttled torrent capabilities to almost 2G-like speed.

I assume 5G will just be the same. you won't see unlimited data plan for a couple of years after release and when they see how much data is used for game streaming like Stadia, they will definitely put their hammer down on that instantly.

Cobra9511767d ago

Have you tried a VPN app? Just curious, since I haven't done it myself on mobile. (I'm entitled to, under my VPN agreement. Just haven't bothered.) VPNs send an encrypted tunnel of data through your ISP to the VPN server; so the ISP doesn't even know what kind of traffic it is. They just get told where to pass it along to.

badz1491767d ago (Edited 1767d ago )

@Cobra951

yup, already tried VPN (albeit a free one) but it's not that torrents are blocked on my unlimited 4G connection, just slowed down.

nucky641768d ago

why would you want to play AAA blockbusters on your phone? the LAST place i want to enjoy god of war 4 would be on a phone. and i disagree - on your PHONE screen, you are NOT getting the FULL console experience.

ramiuk11768d ago

my ps4 updates itself in background and i have fast internet so even if i have to download a 20gb file its done in 5 mins, but as someone above has pointed out even with mega fast interent there are issues with stadia

Cobra9511767d ago

Wait. There's more of that "unbridled" stuff. Look at your downvotes.

All of those advantages you mention come at way too heavy a price: you have literally nothing, aside from whatever device you're using for the streaming and the controller. Even if you swallow the bollocks about games being licensed and not owned by those who buy them for console or PC, at least they have possession of the software, and they can run it whether or not there's an active online service to tether into. If Stadia goes away like OnLive did, or Google decides they don't like you for whatever reason, you lose everything you think you've bought.

And I didn't even mention the unacceptable lag (which I just now did).

BigTrain1767d ago

I dont know if you're being sarcastic or you truly believe what you just posted? You're joking right? Please tell me you're joking?

zsquaresoff1768d ago

Pay for the subscription and then pay for the games??? No Thanks.

DaDrunkenJester1768d ago

The subscription is only if you want 4k and a library of games to play. For instance it is launching with Destiny 2 on the monthly service, with more to come. Then if the game isnt on the service, you need to pay for the game just like any other marketplace. Or you do a free account that caps at 1080p and just buy your games normally with no monthly service.

It's not that I approve of locking a resolution behind a paywall, but I think there is misinformation going around on the pricing model.

kneon1768d ago (Edited 1768d ago )

Destiny 2 is going free to play so that's not much of an incentive unless it includes the annual pass and future expansions

DaDrunkenJester1768d ago

@kneon

Is it? Hahaha I did not know that.

Okay then, unless they do actually add other non F2P games on the service then screw them haha

Skuletor1768d ago

Wait, so even if you buy the game you can't play it in 4k without the added subscription? That's messed up

Shikoku1768d ago

I pay for PS+ and if stadia does offer exclusives that offer better physics, bigger world and better experiences I'm ok with that but it's all an experiment I think so I'm still in wait and see mode.

AnubisG1768d ago

Pricing yes, that is one. The other is that ownership of games are completely taken away from people. And lastly, most of the planet does not have fast enough internet for this thing and will not have fast enough internet for a very long time to come.

Only casual hipsters are interested in this who don't care about gaming what so ever and don't care how they ruin this hobby for the rest of us real gamers.

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus232h ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot10h ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

RNTody10h ago

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead10m ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.
