Is Gears 5 Leaving Old Fans Behind

Gears 5 is going to be a new look at a classic series. Does this mean it is being made with classic fans in mind? Or is it chasing a new audience?

Gears 4 felt like it. I love the series and 4 was solid but really lacked the epic ness of the previous games. The new monster designs were boring. Like in 2 you had a boss fight with a giant fish you had to run up and get into his mouth or that whole level inside a worm’s stomach. 3 just raised the entire freaking level of epic sh*t in the game and had 4 player co-op.

Gears 4 had none of that and was oddly enough just a 2 player co-op game. I’m hoping 5 will be good but I think the team doing this new trilogy doesn’t have the vision of the previous team.

Agree with you 100 percent, the new devlopers do a good job with the core gameplay but the story, levels, bosses, enemies and dialogue were GARBAGE. Gears 4 was one of the most poorly written and uninspired campaigns I've ever seen in a game. Robot enemies? "Juvies"? Ugh. JD and all of the new characters were also trash. Get some new writers. Making Cait the lead in the new one seems like a big mistake

Well maybe its an uncommon opinion, but Ive liked the 4th one the most out of 4 games, at least the've done with all the dudebro part and the new game for me got a bit more depth to it.

You forgot micro-transactions and loot boxes. Those REALLY suck.

An entire village was killed. There were some twisted moments in Gears 4. I played through single player 3 times.

I think they just played it a little too safe with gears 4 because they didn't want to alienate their fanbase

I like where they are taking the series. My hope is that Eventually Gears eventually goes into space and a new universe with new alien life and characters

Who knows it could be for the best. I mean god of war did it and it turned out to be one of the best game this gen. I’m not a big fan of gears and I probably won’t buy a Xbox for it but it could work.

I agree completely, but the big difference here (and correct me if I’m wrong), but with completely different people working on the new Gears game, it doesn’t have that original vision, talent, passion, etc. that the original Gears games did. Compare that to God of War, and you’re looking at the original team rebooting their OWN game, as opposed to other people coming in and doing their own reboot of the game.

You do make a valid point. God of war did have some of its Original devs.
I’m not sure if this gears have any of its original devs tbh... I guess we will see how it turns out. Is there any gameplay footage yet?

Yeah my entire playthrough of 4 I was like any moment it's going to ramp up I can feel it then we got those cool mechs for 10 minutes then a bland final boss and finished.

The most boring part of 4 though was easily the forced wave shooter section's build your defenses have them fail and just shoot everyone anyway and it had 3 waves in the most obvious game logic ever

Gears Tactics is more up my alley rather than Gears 5 so I'm more excited for that.

Nothing crazy promising at this point , sadly. Gears 1-3 had great writing. 4? Ehh.

I don't mind playing as a female either...but you have to atleast look like a female, like Metroid and Tomb. Something happened to Kat...her face. She's just not interesting either.

Probably. It sometimes happens as franchises go through the years as the teams that work on the newer games are substantially, or sometimes completely, different.

Dead Space, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Battlefield are three that spring to mind. Mind you, it's no coincidence that those are all EA and two happen to be Bioware :s

The first game was a landmark title that propelled the generation. It was a moment that took the industry to the next level of HD

Look everyone was skeptical about Halo and it turned out great, I feel it’s long over due for a fresh feel with Gears of War. I’m tired of people always running around with a gnasher aka shotgun every match.

Personally my first time playing Halo and Gears was the latest ones on Xbox One and I didn't finish either.

@drpepperdude I understand that, I happened to have beaten all of the Halos on Legendary difficulty. I personally love the game, whenever you feel the mood to play a First person shooter give Halo a play. Story’s great and the gameplay is fun. Personally my least favorite would be Halo 3 it just did t feel eight gameplay wise.

Doesn’t matter. The gameplay looks boring & stagnant. As well, the dialogue sounds more palm to forehead than before which I wasn’t sure was even possible. After the superb Gears 1 & 2 I thought they would only innovate on creating an amazing campaign with interesting NPC’s & maybe even a little skill tree. Instead they doubled down on loot boxes, a rinse & repeat horde mode, & lazy visual customizations. One of the bright examples of how Microsoft just doesn’t get it.
