Cyberpunk 2077 Got Three Times the Online Mentions of Final Fantasy VII Remake During E3 2019

According to a report by Synthesio, Cyberpunk 2077 got over three times the amount of online mentions of Final Fantasy VII Remake, while Halo Infinite, DOOM Eternal and Dying Light 2 also appeared in the top five.

Microsoft dwarfed other game companies by the same margin, getting three times the social media mentions of Square Enix, with Bethesda, Nintendo and Ubisoft ranking in this order.

I'm kind of shocked by this.

The fact that FFVIIR was playable at E3 made me think it would have been a shoe-in for most talked about game.

Chriswynnetbh1798d ago

Not shocking at all. FFVIIR looks like another overhyped cash grab from SE whereas Cyberpunk looks incredible and only gets better looking. Who would have thought people would be more excited about a brand new FULL game than an episodic remake 🙄

Araragifeels 1798d ago

First is not a cash grab since it took many years to make and had to restart development so many times. Second, you do know that FFVII Remake part 1 would require 2 Blu Ray disc in order to play because FFVII is too big and long to fit as 1 game.

Snookies121798d ago (Edited 1798d ago )

"FFVIIR looks like another overhyped cash grab"

You are joking, right...? Not saying Cyberpunk looks bad, it seems really cool. FF VII Remake is a completely different beast. The reason Cyberpunk was talked about so much is because of Keanu Reeves. The man is legendary, especially when it comes to the online community. So, that's no surprise that it's talked about more.

Chriswynnetbh1798d ago

Crazy how other studios can put out single games with 100+ hours of content but SE needs multiple episodes to put out a remake of what used to be a 40-50 hour game. Not to mention they already have dlc locked behind a collectors edition and still have no idea how many episodes they want to charge you for yet. But sure it's TOTALLY not a cash grab.

TK-661798d ago (Edited 1798d ago )

@Snookies12

"You are joking, right...?"

It's hard to look forward to a remake thats turning the first 5 hours of the original into a full game and then when we ask "so how long until you finish remaking the whole game?" we can't get an answer. If you're buying the FF7R ask yourself how long you'll be waiting for episode 2+ and whether it'd be better to wait for those to also come out first and then play them all together for a dramatically reduced price.

I know people have been waiting for a remake of this since the PS2 days but it's entirely possible that you'll be paying hundred of dollars to play the whole thing if you buy each episode at launch and quite possibly multiple consoles.

Atom6661798d ago

Harsher than I would put it, but I'm really not quite sure where people are getting this new found faith in modern SE delivering on FF.

What was shown looks great, but I'm not ready to forgive and forget that we've been wowed and over promised on FF for years now.

Plus, new AAA IP from a studio that delivered one of the best games of this gen vs. Part 1 of a remake announced 4 years ago in a series coming off of one of its weaker entries. Not hard to see why Cyberpunk got more attention.

Suzyp1798d ago

one of those ppl ^ LOOOL nothing to see here, move on.

Chriswynnetbh1798d ago

Thank you @Atom I'm just glad to see that I'm not the only one that sees how terrible SE has been in the past 10 years. XII, XIII (and the sequels), XV and KH3 were all overhyped trash and the whole time those games were coming out they were leading everyone on with one tidbit of FFVIIR news every couple of years just to keep the hype train alive. And now that it's actually in development they are gonna try and sell us on multiple episodes? Even if I was okay with the battle system change (turn based all day) I still wouldn't be okay with them breaking the game up into parts. Fuck that noise! They haven't put a decent FF game out since 2001 and what they showed doesn't give me any reason to think that will change.

Snookies121798d ago (Edited 1798d ago )

@Chriswynnetbh - It's funny how delusional you are when you act like an open world RPG as massive as FF VII should be easily remade in current generation graphics. You have NO idea what it takes to remake a game like this. I at least understand a tiny amount of what goes into game creation (as I've worked on level design with Unreal Engine 4.) You can have the story, characters, towns, etc. already laid out for you. Doesn't make it any less difficult to fully render in full 3D with a stable frame rate. They're even expanding on events that happened in the original. They are attempting to not only recreate the game, but to significantly broaden the vision the team had for the original version. It is the complete opposite of a cash grab. As they're putting effort into expanding a LOT of the original story. How about hopping on the hate train when you have actual reason to? Maybe just give credit where it's due? If you want "cash grabs" those are the lazy-ass Remasters that only improve texture quality and frame-rate. Then port them to modern consoles. The bare minimum for $40-$60 dollars. This is something SE have clearly put time into.

Sure though, go ahead and be a mindless hater on something you really don't understand. Because a brand-new open world game is just instantly better than a classic being remade. I LOVE the Witcher games. I've been a fan since the first Witcher on PC. I support CD Projekt Red since their early days. This doesn't take anything away from Cyberpunk. But when you act like you know everything about how long it SHOULD take for an enormous game like FF VII, it shows how little you actually know. Cyberpunk's world will be nowhere near the size FF VII's will be. If they've done it right. Which is why they are taking the time to make the entire world realized. Because they seem to want to get it right.

1. Keanu Reaves. He's a pretty universally liked person. As far as publicity goes, it's hard to dislike "Neo from The Matrix" / John Wick / Hollywood's favorite nice guy. I think a lot of people can agree you're kind of a monster if you dislike him.

2. Platform holder's press conference. If Sony was present and showed off Final Fantasy VII Remake, I imagine the 3:1 difference in online mentions would be much smaller. Cyberpunk 2077 might still have more mentions, but pretty hard to know that without appropriate evidence.

3. Cyberpunk 2077 is a [confirmed] multiplatform title. Naturally, there is a larger audience across, at present, three platforms.

4. Final Fantasy VII Remake is kind of divisive. For many modern gamers, they do not know or understand why people love Final Fantasy VII. Sure, they can play it on a number of platforms right now, but I wonder what the modern gamer thinks about turn-based gameplay. And for others who know and appreciate the magic of Final Fantasy VII - probably including you - their skepticism has become cynicism where there are complaints that it is not the same game or that it is compartmentalized. To that, I say this: first, the change to the combat system is ultimately something that appeals to a new generation of gamers; if you're feeling nostalgic, well, you have your options now. Second, do you know what a cash grab is? Final Fantasy VII Remake is not a cash grab. Devil May Cry on Switch is a cash grab. Resident Evil 4-6 on current generation consoles are cash grabs. Most remastered titles are cash grabs because there are often minimal changes to age-old titles and sold separately from age-old and narrative-relevant sequels. Final Fantasy VII Remake is literally a complete overhaul for the modern era. Just because the narrative elements are all known does not suggest the game is, itself, the same experience or a shameless cash grab. That would be somewhat like being disinterested in God of War's sequels because we can probably predict a fair amount of events ensuing from Ragnarok. You conveniently ignore that the game is going to be massive. It's ambitious and is seriously going far to answer the cries for a remake since the tech demo shown at the PS3 reveal all those years ago. And each entry is going to be a full game - so full that it is on 2 blu-ray discs. At this point, the original Final Fantasy VII looks like an abridged version. Plenty of reason to be excited for it; we just know Cyberpunk 2077, at this point, has a larger audience. Final Fantasy VII Remake is, indisputably, not a cash grab. It is a huge undertaking, not something just being cranked out for a quick buck.

jeromeface1798d ago

Making it episodic makes it a cash grab... ESP considering they don't even have any idea how many episodes it will be. I mean come on!

Chriswynnetbh1797d ago

@jerome gets it! It being episodic is what makes it a cash grab. You know for all the hate that gaas games get around here, you would think people would be up in arms about the episodes but you guys are eating that shit up just because SE claims there will be a full game's worth of content in there. SE are turning a single player story driven experience into a service game. How do you guys not see that? I'm sure each episode will be priced at 60 bucks for the initial game and then have one or two dlc packs to hold people over until the next episode. Remind you of any games out there? Seems all too similar to the model Activision had Destiny on for the past 5 years. And considering SE haven't even given a hard number for how many episodes there will be you bet your ass if this shit is selling they'll keep it going for as long as they can.
@snookies I make a living in software development. It might not be in an industry as demanding as gaming but I still understand development cycles and turnaround time. So good job for assuming I have no idea what I'm talking about.

abstractel1797d ago

OT, definitely very interested in Dying Light 2. Cyberpunk and FFVII remake I can't really say I am hyped more for one than the other, they both look fantastic.

If Sony had been at E3 and shown the same demo of FF7 Square Enix did I have a feeling it would be No. 1 over Cyberpunk.

Cyberpunk only won because everyone watched MS's press conference so everyone saw it and Keanu Reeves. While only dedicated Final Fantasy fans watched SE's conference.

OB1Biker1798d ago

Theres also been the fake sjw outrages on gaming sites to get traffic and social media so theres that too

PapaBop1798d ago

FF didn't have Keanu Reeves though. I'd say that's literally the difference.

lxeasy1797d ago

I'm not surprised, Cyberpunk 2077 had an amazing showing once again at the Xbox Press Conference.

dumahim1797d ago

I hate these mentions stats. It seems like it's easily misunderstood or mistracked. There's not a whole lot of ways of mentioning Cyberpunk 2077, but Final Fantasy VII, people could be talking about it a lot, but mentions might be missed because they might only say Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy 7, FF7, FFVII RM, etc instead of Final Fantasy VII Remake or whatever they're looking for.

Just doing a google trends search shows Cyberpunk peaked on June 10th and just comparing to "Final Fantasy" which peaked on June 11th with 84% of the searches that Cyberpunk had a day earlier. "FF7" had 47% of the searches Cyberpunk had. Granted, this is searches and not mentions, but I'm not buying that Cyberpunk really had that many more mentions.

It's because it has Keanu Reeves in it

Forbidden_Darkness1798d ago

Yeah plus the whole "You're breathtaking!" meme thing. Had that not happened, it would have been a lot closer.

Tech51798d ago (Edited 1798d ago )

I would imagine since Cyberpunk is going to have a multi-platform release. the amount of gamer reception for it to be as huge.

Felix_Argyle_Catbro1798d ago

Cyberpunk appeals more to the Call of Duty/Fifa crowd.

Alexious1798d ago

You must be kidding me, dude.

This has to be a troll. It’s too dumb a comment.

I'm not one to be sensationalist or exaggerate things, but that's one of the dumbest comments I've ever seen on this site. And that's no easy task.

pietro12121798d ago

Well, that's b.s. Cyberpunk appeals to the RPG crowd which is a giving

MajorLazer1798d ago

Baffled as to how you've come to this conclusion

Brave_Losers_Unite1798d ago

You need to get perma banned off the internet

RedDevils1798d ago

And ffvii appeal to Fortnight crowd right?

BrettAwesome1798d ago (Edited 1798d ago )

@ Felix_Argyle_Crapbro

Nah. You just decided to hate it because you suck at 1st person games. That's ok. There are plenty of turn based games with hot girls. What do you guys call them. Waifus, right? So you pretend to have actual girlfriends and shit. Now you just need a game called "Laifu". Lol

Edit: That would appear to the Persona series

Servbot411797d ago

The way it was handled was so dumb. One shots in melee...your teammates are to ostupid to get away from its attack. So you most often end up alone in a certain fight.

Needing an accessory to keep a.i from dying and only one of them isnt great.
