Opinion: Xbox reclaimed the E3 crown

Edit: This isn't to say they didn't have a good show, because they did. We see games we're going to play in the future. But, this opinion was immediate and claiming crown-sake with the first real conference the only thing done so far.

Parasidious - What are you on about? Psychonauts 2, Forza 4, Minecraft, SoD2 and Bleeding Edge all had gameplay. That's just off the top of my head. They even showed off Obsidians new game, while it's not a 1st party game, it's cool they still let them show off their game. Why show Halo, when they announced it would arrive with the next xbox - next Christmas. It'll show at next E3. There is Gears of War 5 game-play.

I have to agree. The lack of gameplay was a terrible decision. Before E3 I was wondering what we'll be playing post Gears 5, up until Next gen launch day. Now Post conference....I'm still wondering that. Just nothing of substance. Even with Gears 5, what did we see? New game mode is fine, its always good to have options, but how is that it?
I know there's a possibility of more info coming this week(Maybe Banjo news on Nintendo's show...but come on.

I only watch e3 for the Sony conference... However, since this year Sony isn't attending I kept an open mind and watched the MS and bestesda conference.... Ms was all about convincing you to get gamepass in which I didn't care for because the games they showed weren't anything special to be honest. Best moment was when Keanu reeves made an appearance for cyberpunk 2077. That was cool... Other than that, I was more sad that Sony wasn't there... I found bestesda's conference a lot better in terms of games shown so I'd vote on them to be the best this year.

Games with dates and all for gamepass. We have seen gameplay of gears and Cyber Punk and from Halo that was the engine. I did want to see the new iPs that the new studios are working out but today isn't the end of the world you can't show everything you have and pretend to have something to show next year.......that happened to Sony two years in a row.

It did a decent job. I preferred last years E3, it was better paced.
-The leaks ruined some of the surprises. I'm glad Ninja Theory clear things for people who have to be spoon fed info. They are working on multiple projects.
-I did not like the Gears 5 announcement. They did a grand disservice by not showing gameplay. I know it will be on mixer later one but that was the stage to show it.
-I would cut some Indies out.
-Halo was marvelous
-The Scarlett announcement was great but it should have been midshow.
-The Xcloud stuff was a bit confusing...need to rewatch it.
-Double fine acquisition great but I was expecting more acquisitions. Double fine is a great addition.
-Not enough gameplay demos
-I know the new studios are not ready to show anything but I would have been cool if they shows some exclusives.

Tales of Arise was a great one shown. It is a huge leap forward for that franchise, using an entirely new engine. Plus it was all in-game footage shown. Other than that and Cyberpunk though, not much particularly wowed me.

This conference had its moments, I'd say it was good showing overall for Microsoft. Just not anything spectacular.

Personally i didn't like it too much. Not a huge Gears fan but that hoard mode looks really good and very well done. But for me as I said it was the indie games. I can't do it anymore nobody cares about those its useless filler. Those JRPGS looked great and I'm glad continued support on those MS needs it. Plus I'm confused on which of those 14 games are exclusive? No Fable 4 at all but Bleeding Edge does have my interest now. Halo looks good and next gen is be monstrous for MS I will say that there next gen console will be fantastic. But its my fault for reading too much into the rumors leading up to E3. Let myself down lol. Just like last year a good showcase for whats to come with scarlett and beyond but overall just average 6/10 show. I liked a few of the indie games they showed. I like that indies are getting stage time, but the way they did it this year, I didn't like much. That sizzle reel had a lot of games, but they were only for like 5 seconds each, and you barely got to see them before they were onto the next. Blink, and you'd miss one.

lack of PlayGround's new game was disappointing, although it's rumored to be Fable, I'd like to see what they were working on before the acquisition.

12 minutes looked really cool, even if it were indie.

Anything Lego is always good for me, and Forza lego was a nice bonus for the one game I still play on my system.

Flight Simulator is a big announcement. Maybe not for console, as it can be kind of dry for what console gamers are used to, but it's a huge franchise on PC. For those who aren't aware, it's supposed to simulate flying a plane, so it's not like Ace Combat.

I also thought Legend of Wright looked cool.

But, overall, I think if they want to capture the market, especially for next gen, they need more of the big high profile games. Maybe they're still holding back, but I think some people expect more from the new studios, while disregarding the fact that most of the acquisitions are mid-tier or indie studios.

I was disappointed in the doublefine purchase, but will play their games.

Just like you said they're holding back so much so that the new Halo is on Scarlett even though previously announced for current gen. Their big AAA's will be next gen officially now.

Xbox looking much better they’ve finally got the message... by looking back at the launch of PS4 it would seem
“We got the message we’ve been listening(to Sony)” it’s about games.
I missed the first hour or so but seems packed with games from start to finish shame it’s taken them 5-6 years to realise this.

Sony has had nothing but amazing E3’s
Even the real awkward one last year showed some amazing game play. The reason they skipped this year is they showed all the cards they can show without spoiling anything else before PS5 Reveal. Plus the punch that E3 used to have is no more. If anything this is MS first year where is was great...should have been stellar and we didn’t even get that with Sony not showing up.

My opinion, is that they really played it safe. There was nothing shown that I wasn't expecting, other than the acquisition of Double Fine. The lack of a Lockhart announcement makes me think that Xbox One X is going to be their entry level 4K console, perhaps even a discless version.

They never really lost it. Most of their e3 have been good. This one......I mean it wasn't horrible but I was disappointed. I think some of the rumors had me with set expectations for a few games. If this was last year's E3 I would have rated it better

Another thing I keep seeing I want to address those hating on gears and calling that halo trailer great YOU MAKE ME SICK! I'm not a huge gears fan and everyone here knows I'm a big halo fanboy. BUT NOTHING ABOUT THAT TRAILER WAS "MARVELOUS" all it did was leave more questions than answers for the next halo. And that gears trailer (not counting that weird face animation in the beginning) was good.

I assumed it had meaning for those more familiar with the story. Following it up with a completely unrelated MP mode seemed dumb, especially since they just said how it's a new MP mode, but didn't even show what you'd be doing in it with game play, just a nifty, if not overly long, CGI trailer of people doing "bad ass" things, which honestly, wasn't really that cool after the first minute. Now, Deathloop at Bethesda's conference, that's how you do "bad ass"...and they did it in 1/3 the time. That game's showing would make Keanu proud. Anyhow, I guess the new MP mode is escaping from something while being attacked by bad guys.

Sony have 2018 games that are way better than what MS showed. I wonder what MS' strategy is? Very disappointed I watched the Microsoft E3 press conference, because it was just CGI trailers. Even Gears 5 that comes out in September was a CGI trailer instead of gameplay.

The best thing out of it was Double Fine being bought, but Microsoft NEEDS more first party studios and hopefully for E3 2020 they buy at least four more, because MS Needs all the more games they can get on the Xbox platform.

It doesn't matter because all games go to game pass which means they will be A or AA. Or they will be AAA in Microsofts standards which is regular AA. The show's strongest announcements were Cyberpunk 2077 with Keanu Reeves... The gears 5 announcement was lack luster, all cgi. The Ninja Theory trailer was leaked... And not really interesting. Double Fine's acquisition was ok, Like Outer World's, Psychonaut is coming to PS4, 2 of 55 of the games they showed that are Multiplatform.

The 14 XB studio games comprised of second party indie games games they publish like Ori, expansion DLCs for games already released, and new trailers for games without release date for AAA first party... IE Halo Infinite and Bleeding Edge.

The show was weak especially with the games pass and xcloud announcement... And Scarlett was a word for word read of Mark Cerny's PS5 tease. They literally could have used the 3 minutes to show game play of Gears 5 instead of wasting it to tell us it's a PS5 that's 4 times more powerful than the one X... Like they really could have given Digital Foundry an interview and used that 3 min to announce a new AAA IP or show game play.

It's funny, but that last paragraph illustrates why E3 isn't needed anymore. Imagine if Sony hadn't announced that stuff about PS5, and saved it for their E3 conference. Assuming MS would have made the same announcement, which is unlikely since the talking points and what was focused on was exactly the same, then it'd just put Sony in the "me too" position, instead of MS being in it now. Every comment on the Scarlett technical aspects is now being referred to as "boring" or old because Sony already said it. in the press, and on forums, you can't make mention of it without it immediately being followed by, "Which is pretty much what Sony said they have". Sony gets double the attention, while getting almost exclusive coverage of it for a whole month or so leading up to today. All it cost them was the money they had to pay Cerny for the time it took him to do the interview with Wired.

Social media is where marketing is at nowadays. Not expensive conferences. I think Sony could have still shown up to be on the floor, because they do have stuff to show off to the press, but, I can understand why they may feel that the press will give them just as much attention by providing them the news through other means, and now they can spread it out so it's not so much at one time, where things get lost in the fray. Looking at just this Sunday's conferences, so many games go without much press coverage, while other things take the spot light....like the Scarlett's tech, or who won what show.

E3 2019 has been a huge letdown so far, I only tune in for cyberpunk 2077 and even that was a fail. No game play only a CGI trailer? Come on CD Project Red you could have done better. MS showed a bunch of third party games a couple of games already announced games and one new IP that nobody is excited for. Ninja Theory's game looks like a clone of a bunch of games already in the market. So if you want to say MS won go ahead but they still have given me zero reasons to want to buy their next console.
