What video game really deserves the movie treatment?

GR: “Look, we've all had a tough week and the nightmarish release of the Sonic The Hedgehog movie trailer did nothing to help. In an effort to distract ourselves from his human teeth, skinny frame and lack of genitalia of any kind, we decided to argue over which video games really deserve the movie treatment.“

I personally think videos games story have a better opportunity at being successful if they are done as a tv series.
I understand that movies make more money and its a way to broaden the horizons but TV series are proving to be more popular especially with more accessible nowadays.

rainslacker1819d ago (Edited 1819d ago )

I've noticed a lot of video game movies tend to disregard much of the source material, and try to make them "hollywood" because the producers feel that it'd be more appealing to a broader audience if it met the standard formulas.

That's one thing i like about the Resident Evil movies. They are b type movies on a big scale, much like the games themselves. They don't delve too much into the story, like the games. They focus on the action, like the games. They're not great movies, but they're fun...like the games, except I wouldn't say the games are bad.

While I think there are some game stories out there which would work well as a TV show, like Halo which Rooster Teeth with Red vs. Blue, the comic books, or that animated show proved. Other games the story isn't really that long. For instance, the Last of Us could work as a movie, because the story sections were about as long as a movie. However, I think the tension built within the game play itself helped sell the story and make you feel closer to the characters.

NecrumOddBoy1819d ago

Spurg,

I agree and that is why is was lame that the HALO show was killed off with whole Xbox TV vision. It would be nice to see it come to Netflix.

Spurg1818d ago

They are still making it.
Showtime has taken over have cast Pablo Schreiber who plays Mad Sweeny in American gods as Master Chief.
It will be released next year well in time Halo Infinite.

nommers1818d ago

Only the ones that have an expansive enough world would work as a tv show. As a movie for 2-3 hours condensed you’d need something that has a short, simple, and effective story.

Kashima1820d ago

Dark Souls or Bloodborne movie because why not

Godmars2901819d ago

Because single silent protagonist would be replaced by a group of chatty teens and/or crack - as in on - military team - if not a horrible Burndle/Fly hybrid - with one surviving to be a "chosen one".

Hardiman1819d ago

God damn Sonic looks ridiculous! I knew nothing about it till me and the wife went to see Pet Semetary and there was a cut out for Sonic. All it showed was his sneakers but even then I cringed.

tochi1819d ago

I agree. But, but this will be a rare case that film maker should stay away from the game creator.
Unless they intend to make next Game of Thrones.

Chumdiddy1819d ago

It's in spec development and the slated director has already talked with Kojima about the movie. Both already agreed that you can't make them anything like the games outside of the basic plot summary.

Still, Kojima couldn't be a part of it in an official capacity without Konami's blessing anyway.

ShockUltraslash1819d ago (Edited 1819d ago )

Anthem and Fallout 76.
That way when the movies suck, they would be true to the source material no matter what.

Not a single Reistance? Fuck this article.

mastershredder16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

Starhawk over Warhawk?...... Dude, NO ONE should listen to you.

Odd choices for "best" more like you settled as these being the "best" that available to you at the time, cause a lot of these blow or were average to poor performers that ended up in bargain bin.

Missing too many great sci-fi titles here. The Void, The Resistance Series, Killzone 2 and 3, Enslaved, man.. there were so many, this is redicu-list.

FreeckyCake16d ago

Nobody should listen to you either with that attitude.

OtterX16d ago

I agree that Starhawk shouldn't be above Warhawk, however I must say that Starhawk multiplayer was incredible for its time! Many people wrote it off bc the single player was quite terrible, bc it was basically 1 huge tutorial for the multiplayer. But I can tell you never spent any significant amount of time in MP. It was doing incredibly tense base building w air, foot and land vehicle (and mech!) combat long before Fortnite was ever a thing.

I bet it would have been much better received if it had just ditched the story mode all together. So many people like yourself completely wrote it off based on reviews by reviewers that let the criticism of single player weigh heavily on their scores. I bet you didn't even play it.

Friendlygamer16d ago

The riddick games are some of the best stealth titles ever, highly underrated

YourMommySpoils16d ago

What games? All recall plating was Escape from Butcher Bay.

Friendlygamer16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

There's also the less acclaimed 'assault on dark Athena'

( also, not saying this to you specifically but there's both resistance and killzone games on the list, it's amazing how even something so simple and innocent as a game list can be turned into misinformed vitriol here lol )

jznrpg16d ago

Glad to see Resonance of Fate. Enslaved was pretty good too. I’m sure there are others nobody has listed but I’m too tired to try and think of anything

Forget Gravity Rush movie, give us another GR game!

porkChop111d ago

I didn't even know a movie was coming. If they can get the visuals and everything right I'll watch it.

Barlos111d ago

I didn't either, until this article. I'm also surprised, since GR was a commercial flop. Seems weird that they'd want to invest money into making it into a film.

I think the games are great though, especially on Vita. I think the move to PS4 killed the experience a little, but I'd still like to see a new one.

1Victor110d ago

I didn’t know it was in development ether but it makes sense after they saw the first doctor strange movie and the far from home fight, if it’s like that’s it’s going to be one of those Oscar nominees

Cacabunga110d ago

GR movie and shutting Japan Studio.. so stupid

porkChop110d ago

@Cacabunga

Oh yeah... Well there goes any hope for a new game. Shuttering Japan Studio was a really bad decision.

Surely you’d think if the movie is coming so is another game

And I couldn’t be happier.

Only played the demo of gr2 but let me say it’s one of the most artistic and inventive new games. Ps5 will power gr3 to new heights
Fingers crossed

Made my day hearing this.

Finally, something innovative

Redemption-64111d ago

GR2 flopped, which would they make a new game? A movie has more appeal and a successful hit at the bix office, could lead to a new game for the franchise

ChasterMies111d ago

Ok, I’ll stop sitting on Gravity Rush 2. It’s been in my library for only 8 years.

Chocoburger111d ago

Play Gravity Rush Remastered first if you haven't already, the stories are linked together. GR 2 is a fantastic game, it has a lot of stuff to see and do. In fact I have purposefully not completed the game 100% because I simply didn't want the game to end. I still have some trophies to collect, and a whole free story DLC chapter to play through.

Gravity Rush 3 would be amazing! But the team that made parts 1 and 2 were shut down, so I don't expect it to happen. This was Jim Ryan's biggest sin of all, shutting down PlayStation Japan Studios. What a shame.

FinalFantasyFanatic111d ago

Why not both? I really like the games and was disappointed we didn't get a third game to finish off the story, but I wouldn't mind a movie either if it's well done. Maybe it'll drum up enough interest to get us that third game.

gold_drake111d ago

damn that is aaalot of ppl

id rather have another Gravity Rush game than a movie tbh

DarXyde111d ago

Same. This series really resonates with my gaming spirit. I love these games so much that I got four platinums out of two games. I was always dreading that we would never get another game after Japan Studio's closure, but I'm feeling hopeful in them not giving up on the franchise with this move. My guess is that they're going to use this as a funding point

MrNinosan111d ago

That is the same amount as daily loading screens... never mind
