Exclusive: What to Expect From Sony's Next-Gen PlayStation

Mark Cerny would like to get one thing out of the way right now: The videogame console that Sony has spent the past four years building is no mere upgrade. Don't expect it anytime in 2019, but the next PlayStation console is well on its way—and it's packing ray-tracing support and a loadtime-killing solid-state hard drive.

UnSelf1848d ago

Great. We can finally get Eight Days.

The Wood1848d ago

Lol. Forgot all about that. . .

I'm glad cerny is still active.

He helped Sony smash it this gen

That's like 16 mega pixel 2010
vs 16 mega pixel 2019,
Which would you pick?

Cerny, I feel, is the one that made the Pro so underwhelming. I hope Sony involves more developers in the design process.

"Cerny, I feel, is the one that made the Pro so underwhelming. I hope Sony involves more developers in the design process."

And I feel exactly the opposite. It was Cerny who managed (with the Pro) to beat his competition by a year and $100 while still delivering a competent machine that wins in head to heads on occasion and even produces better FPS performance on a somewhat regular basis. An amazing achievement.

jukins1848d ago

@Rangerwalk the ps4pro was a mid gen upgrade not a complete overhaul like the xbox one x was. Increased performance 4k support and enhanced vr support all for the same as a launch ps4 100 cheaper and a year earlier than its competitors dont know how you see it as underwhelming

First question is why did he give all these infos??
I liked the approach they did with PS4 reveal... Out of nowhere

Saigon1848d ago

@bouzebbal

I didn't feel like he gave out everything, he just to me stated what the system can do. We still need the true specs to see what exactly the system is capable of, but right now we have a general assessment that we can use assume. Clock speeds and RAM type and the amount of RAM will also be key. The only true shocker imo was the SSD. With this, I assume Digital Foundry will give us a full assessment.

And it looks like they didn't waste any time:

KillZallthebeast1848d ago

My work pc is 1.5k retail so an in home console with the same specs isn't really a bad thing

jerethdagryphon1848d ago

It's to get an idea of what xbox is doing if xbox matches them on there reveal. Then hell bump the smepcs a tiny bit add another 8gb ram for instance

Great news

Cerny lead architect
Navi GPU
7nm Zen 2 CPU
Custom ultra fast SSD that has more raw speed than any pc SSD
3D audio tech built into the chip
Supports PSVR
Backwards compatible
Has a physical drive
Supports 8K
Ray tracing
Been in development since 2015
Death Stranding could be cross gen launch title

This is everything i want to hear. Navi, Zen, SSD, true generational leap. The part that seems to be getting lost here is that the super fast custom SSD is being pushed for more than just an increase in standard load times. Cerny said it is a game changer in that it will impact the way games are made and played. It can fundamentally change many of the gimmicks and tropes in games today and quite literally allow for faster in game movement and larger more seamless open worlds. Console games currently are limited by how fast the data can be pulled off the HDD. Spiderman can only go so fast because it takes time for the world around him to load. Fast travel takes up to 1 min, opening doors can take exceptionally long, and even menus and inventories are purposely convoluted in order to buy time for loading. This custom SSD can help change all of this. Characters will whip through the world at greater actually speeds, open worlds will all be seamless, doors will be instant, menus will be easy and quick, and draw distances should improve.

gravedigger1848d ago

J. Schreier from Kotaku :

"Wow, Sony undercuts Microsoft with the first details on PS5, not coming in 2019 (who could've guessed...). I heard at GDC that one of the big PS5 marketing beats would be "no loading times" which Cerny confirms here. Sounds expensive!"

Mark Cerny is once again the Lead System Architect.
8 core AMD 7nm Zen 2 based on third generation Ryzen.
Ray-tracing support with custom AMD Navi GPU.
Custom AMD unit for 3D Audio, also aided by ray-tracing, a big upgrade.
Extremely fast high-end custom SSD storage faster than any solution currently available for PC:
Spider-Man load times on PS4 Pro: 15 seconds → 0.8 seconds on next-gen PlayStation.
Technically supports 8K but Cerny demoed Spider-Man load speed improvements on a 4K screen.
New Virtual Reality platform strongly hinted at but also supports current PSVR (meaning millions of VR users 'day one').
Death Stranding might be a cross-gen title (speculation in article based on Cerny reply).
Physical Media.
Backwards Compatible with at least PS4.
Four years in development so far.
2020.
This is all official information! Straight from Mark Cerny. Key aspects were demoed to Wired on next-gen hardware.

Great news. Guess I wasn't so crazy to expect an SSD in the PS5 after all...

That said, this sudden reveal feels like a pre-emptive strike, a bait even... The ball is in MS's court now and I can't frickin wait for this fight to start.

Z5011848d ago (Edited 1848d ago )

Wait, what?
If it didn't have BC. What would you be losing? Meaning. You wouldn't have purchased day one because it couldn't play games you can already play? I'm confused.

@Mac42o_0: Dude, RTFA..."At the moment, Sony won’t cop to exact details about the SSD—who makes it, whether it utilizes the new PCIe 4.0 standard—but Cerny claims that it has a raw bandwidth higher than any SSD available for PCs." Meaning that while PC's might have it by that point, it's not something they currently have. And whether or not it's M.2 is completely pointless...M.2 is a form factor, not an interface. Totally irrelevent to this discussion.

People don't realize how dramatically SSD drives have been dropping in price. I regularly see 1tb sales from newegg for under 100. This is a dramatic reduction from even a year ago, and the price drops don't seem to be slowing down.

Cobra9511847d ago

It makes it enormously interesting for me too, since I skipped the PS4 entirely. (My last Sony console is a PS2.) There are quite a few PS4 games I'd like to play in addition to the next-gen goodies the system will get.

This sounds amazing! These specs coupled with Sony’s 1st party studios will blow minds.

-Mark Cerny is once again the Lead System Architect.

-8 core AMD 7nm Zen 2 based on third generation Ryzen.

-Ray-tracing support with custom AMD Navi GPU.

-Custom AMD unit for 3D Audio, also aided by ray-tracing, a big upgrade. Hot on the heels of Sony having acquired near-industry-standard AudioKinetic.

-Extremely fast high-end custom SSD storage faster than any solution currently available for PC:

-Spider-Man load times on PS4 Pro: 15 seconds → 0.8 seconds on next-gen PlayStation. That's ~19x faster!
Huge practical game changer opening up for new design opportunities.

-Technically supports 8K but Cerny demoed Spider-Man load speed improvements on a 4K screen.

-New Virtual Reality platform strongly hinted at but also supports current PSVR (meaning millions of VR users 'day one').

-Death Stranding might be a cross-gen title (speculation in article based on Cerny reply).
Physical Media.

-Backwards Compatible with at least PS4.
Devkit is with developers and they recently accelerated its deployment.

-Four years in development so far.
2020.

I think they will hold an event in February like they did with the PS4 and launch November 2020

Rude-ro1848d ago

The 20th anniversary of their greatest selling console. The ps2.
I am sure they are going to make it a big deal and the ps4 to the ps5 will be treated like the ps2 from the ps1.

cerny has given a lot of info today - i would be surprised if they didn't officially announce the new system sometime this year.
edit - i do agree with you on a launch for next year - but, i'm thinking earlier than november.

darthv721848d ago

My thought exactly. I'd been saying since rumors started to flow that 2020 holds a certain significance to Sony. 20 years of PS2 and 25 of PS1 (in terms of NA and WW release). Just like the next Xbox may release in 2021 which is the 20th anniversary of the og xbox.

The 10th Rider1848d ago

It seems like that was the original plan. Their current game lineup, skipping E3, no PSX last year, this "announcement" out of nowhere. They were probably planning on a 2019 launch, but I don't think the tech is quite there yet. 7nm GPUs may not even launch this year.

nucky641848d ago

i disagree - with the great games they've been releasing, i don't think they had any intention (or reason) of bringing out ps5 before 2020.

extermin8or1848d ago

@nucky64 he said some games including exclusives will get a release on both consoles and with backwards compatibility it doesn't matter. I reckon next march with them taking a slight loss to make back on software.

JackBNimble1848d ago

The article says no 2019 launch

pinkyxyz1848d ago

"the tech isnt there yet". Everything that Cerney mentioned in the article is availble in one form or another right now except navi. summer release atm.

The 10th Rider1847d ago (Edited 1847d ago )

@nucky,

Right now the lineup is fine for a 2020 launch. However Dreams and Days Gone were both heavily delayed. If both had released last year then this year and next would have been really light without the PS5 launch. My guess is it would have been The Last of Us 2 over the summer, Ghost of Tsushima in the Fall, and Death Stranding cross gen . . . With the PS5 in November.

@JackBNimble,

Yeah, I don't think 2020 was a recent change. I just think 2019 was the original target, a year or two back.

@pinkyxyz,

Zen 2 is coming the middle of this year, right now Navi doesn't have a target, but it could be the end of this year. Production takes time, so even though the tech is available, tech that literally just launched typically doesn't appear In a console.

Next Gen Playstation (PS5)
- PS4 Backwards Compatibility
- PSVR Compatible
- Physical Media

With Stadia and xCloud adopting this always online method, I can only see consumers wanting to go for the PS5, as long as studios continue to output Top shelf exclusives.

xcloud is different from stadia in that xcloud is a compliment to the xbox hardware, whereas stadia is an online only solution.

rainslacker1848d ago

So xcloud is free to use with your xbox? If not, it's just another service, and just because its tied to ones xbl account doesn't mean that it's not it's own thing anymore than psnow is somehow a compliment to ps4. They both stream games you purchase or rent in some way.

bluefox7551848d ago

The point is that the focus is different, no one can deny at this point that MS are trying to shift their model away from the traditional console.

TheUndertaker851848d ago (Edited 1848d ago )

So does the existence of PS Now stop consumers from wanting PS5 if that’s instantly what does it for Microsoft and Google? Then in the instance of Microsoft there’s a better chance of more backwards compatibility versus PS5.

They actually state the only reason PS4 backwards compatibility would happen is because of equal architecture. Anything else however is not on that architecture. So PS Now will likely still be required for PS3 namely.

TheUndertaker851848d ago

This as well, directly from this story:
“Google is leading a charge away from traditional consoles by launching a cloud-gaming service, Stadia, later this year. Microsoft’s next version of the Xbox will presumably integrate cloud gaming as well to allow people to play Xbox games on multiple devices. Sony’s plans in this regard are still unclear—it’s one of the many things Cerny is keeping mum on, saying only that “we are cloud-gaming pioneers, and our vision should become clear as we head toward launch””

KickSpinFilter1848d ago

Almost for certain PSNow will be needed for PS3,2,1 BC.
But for PS4, PS5 will play all PS4 games.

Srhalo1848d ago

@KickSpinFilter

Maybe your right, but I don't think so. PSNow is a service that provides games. Giving away BC for free doesn't harm PSNow's value if it has 800+ games. People are buying PSNow for the games not for the BC.

The two don't really compete directly.

It's Time To Stop Giving Xbox Boss Phil Spencer A Pass

Under his leadership, many have lost their jobs and fewer games have made it out the door.

purple10111h ago

people should call for his resignation, he has literally flushed xbox down the toilet.
another 3 studios closed today, thats it now, get out

Tody_ZA9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

Well purple101 you'd have to convince Observer and the other Xbox faithful that these studio closures and the fallout from the acquisitions is a bad thing and a sign of what's to come, and I don't think you're going to do that.

Nobody has managed that feat.

Redgrave9h ago

Obscure and Zeref have been summoned to the floor to give their account of these proceedings.

VenomUK9h ago

I 100% blame 'nice guy Phil' for the death of Xbox. The thing to realise is the Xbox Series S & X are performing WORST in console sales and game sales than the much criticised Xbox One - how can this be?

His two big mistakes were 1-not developing enough exclusives and 2 - always trying to beat PlayStation. If he made more exclusives over his decade reign and not tried to 'win' then classic Xbox would still be here in a profitable third place. Instead he tried a series of different projects to win and he ended up ultimately destroying Xbox by changing its relationship with its most loyal customers. What did he do?

* Phil spent a decade only release new iterations of Halo, Forza and Gears and not investing in creating new first party studios and IP. He mishandled Scalebound and shutdown Lionhead Studios.

* Phil tried Mixer, a streaming channel that could be used to promote Xbox dominance with free giveaways...

* Phil tried to create a streaming service that he regarded as too superior to consider PlayStation and Nintendo as competitors! But would instead compete with Netflix and Google...

* But his worst mistake was Xbox Game Pass - a multi billion dollar investment that could only work if completely dominated the worldwide gaming market - but it didn't. Instead it changed the culture of Xbox gamers so they resented spending on third party games as they were now trained to expect everything for free. Now all the games Microsoft had invested so much in were not only NOT making money from other platforms, as ever, but they were now NOT EVEN making money from Xbox customers.

If Phil Spencer had just concentrated on making new games and not non-stop gimmicks to beat PlayStation, I genuinely believe the Xbox would be an attractive platform with regular exclusives like Halo but with others too that would give it its distinct identity and maintain a profitable existence. Phil's been in charge for over a decade, the blame lays at his feet.

Chevalier2h ago

Nah idiots like those 2 are lost causes. Just look at the idiotic floundering comments already being posted.

amazinglover8h ago

Last MS financial results for FY24 Q2 which is the company's sales data through Dec. 31, 2023. According to the earnings, gaming revenue is up 49% year-over-year.

That doesn't sound like he flushing it down the toilet and that also makes very unlikely he loses his job any time soon.

crazyCoconuts7h ago

Revenue up due to acquisition... Spending 10s of billions for new companies of course revenue is up. They don't tell us profits but they wouldn't be shutting down these divisions if they were in the black. Pretty sure they're shifting so radically because their current state has been an abject failure

Scissorman7h ago

This is 100% due to Activision Blizzard. If that deal had not gone through, Xbox revenue would be flat, which means a game like Starfield failed to move the needle.

rlow16h ago

@crazyCoconuts
While I agree that Phil and team have gone back on their word. Especially the last six years of promises.

But I disagree on your logic about the revenue.
They bought the companies to boost their gaming division revenue. In that regard they were very successful. They are owned by MS so your point is moot.

Lightning772h ago

They made all that money and still doing studio shutdowns...

It's bottomless pit of money MS wants. There's no amount of money MS can make to save their own studios. They're doing it out greed and general incompetence. Calling Phil's head won't mean anything or do anything for MS. They'll still destroy regardless.

Chevalier2h ago

Damn idiots don't know how to read revenue reports. Revenue was due to folding in Activision Blizzard Revenue. They were up 61% due to Activision Blizzard with 62% increase. So they only went up 1% over last year. But idiots going to be idiots thinking Spencer is helping Xbox right now. Lol

Phil needs to go. His time is over. When you oversee layoff after layoff after studio closure after studio closure, it's impossible to keep going forward and have people - employees and fans alike - trust you in any way.

Especially after HiFi Rush hit their metrics. I guess we know what to expect for Ninja Theory next once Hellblade is out, and Machine Games once Indiana's out & Todd Howard focuses back on ES6.

Lightning772h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Ninja Theory won't last after HB2. Because it won't hit some impossible metric in order to be a success at MS.

Expect NT to be gone in a years time also. Where the hells the advertising for Hellblade 2? Another MS issue they do to themselves bunch of clowns.

Tacoboto2h ago

Their first-announced Series game going out like this. Their marketing so far has just been a daily tweet or two the last week.

And now this will overshadow everything up till and through its release. Maybe Ninja Theory will get the same dignity as Tango and bow out with a better PS5 port.

Chevalier2h ago

Hellblade 2 out in 2 weeks and no one will even remember it by the beginning of June

Chevalier2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Just watch Outer World's 2 also be dead on arrival without Playstation and Nintendo gamers buying that game you can expect Gamepass to kill that IP too. Ditto for making that contract to exclude Playstation gamers from getting Indiana Jones too. Remember how Tomb Raider sales were on Playstation after the 1 year exclusivity? Expect even worse for Indiana Jones too

mastershredder10h ago

It's not just Phil (Phil is just the dumb kid taking the money) and Kotaku is NOT the voice to listen to as shi7 sites like Kotaku helped contribute to modern gaming toxicity and disinformation. Kotaku staff = Much like Phil, and yes need to go.

Moegooner10h ago

MS has been posting record profits, you think they give a crap about games and gamers? Think again.

DOMination-10h ago

What a prat.

People gave him and Matt Booty the benefit of the doubt for a few years due to the mess they inherited but a decade on and all they've done is ruin gaming for everyone.

The only success they've had is MS Flight Simulator which was developed by a third party anyway - and Forza Horizon which by pure coincidence went downhill in quality the second Playground were acquired (imo) and that's all I can think of. Everything else they've touched has been ruined.

It's genuinely staggering how either of these two guys are still there.

Hofstaderman10h ago

Phil didnt even inherit a mess, he was equally responsible for it because he sat on the executive so the kinect and XBONE roadmap vision was also on him. Mattrick was the convenient public scapegoat back then but now theres no one to place the blame on.

Tacoboto10h ago

If they're to keep anyone, I'd hope it would be Sarah Bond. She's at least consistent, constantly doing quick tweets with green emojis where she can, repping the brand, saying the next hardware will be the biggest leap ever (whatever that means).

Phil Spencer openly minimizes Xbox by going out of his way to congratulate competitors and talking about how great playing non-Xbox devices are; if only Xbox had someone that could even pretend to like Xbox for being Xbox.

LoveSpuds10h ago

This is the point I always found frustrating, the whitewashing of Spencers reputation when he got promoted. He was involved in the slide into mediocrity of the 360 generation!

Aloymetal9h ago

The worse is yet to come and their fanbase don't know it yet, someone at MS posted and deleted a tweet saying all their main ''exclusives'' Halo, Forza, Gears etc will be heading to PS soon so grab a front seat ticket and some popcorn and enjoy the show;) The crying will be hilarious.

Notellin8h ago

Yeah he is absolutely responsible for the abysmal state of Xbox. I can't tell Mattrick and Spencer apart at this point. Both have been horrible executives for the Xbox brand.

Lightning772h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Phil's responsible for this generations mess. Phil was the one following orders under Steve Balmer and Don Mattrick.

Don even admitted he messed up on camera with the Xbox documentary

Let's keep the facts straight. Everything currently now is Phil's fault.
