Why not put it into the context with ts competitors and not some old peripherals?

Cupid_Viper_31874d ago

Lol, you know why. If you were trying to downplay an F1 car, you could easily bring up fighter planes and say they break the sound barrier.

darthv721874d ago

Well... technically Sega was a competitor with Sony at one time. Plus you cant compare this to the kinect. You could compare the PS4 camera to xbo kinect like you could the ps3 camera to the 360 kinect or the ps2 eyetoy to the xbl vision camera.

When comparing expensive add-ons that are meant to change the way you play then... this comparison is correct. VR changes the game for PS4 just like the CD and 32x changed things for the Genesis.

Godmars2901874d ago

And "technically" Sega ran themselves into the ground, out of making consoles, specifically because of moves like the Sega CD trying to keep up with Sony.

And you can't compare the PS4 camera to Kinect because at Kinect's "height", it was mandatory. You were forced to buy it, until you weren't, and it died soon after where the camera remains an optional thing.

AspiringProGenji1874d ago (Edited 1874d ago )

When I said competitor I meant Oculus and Vive.

rainslacker1874d ago

SegaCD didn't really change the way you played the games. It just changed the medium the games were delivered on in the case of SegaCD, and the power available to the game in the case of 32X.

They are expensive add-ons for sure, but that is about the only place the similarity ends.

Sony seems to deem the PSVR a success. They are supporting it with games. Developers are making games for it. I'm sure Sony, and even the devs would like to sell more, but they said long ago that they knew it wasn't going to sell huge numbers. But, given the reports that have come out, it is selling lots of software, and if it does that, it's making people money, which is really what makes it a success. Plus, the recent 4.2 million indicates that it's selling faster YOY....so it's picking up.

Seems like comparing it to other VR of old would be more prudent. I mean, do we not have Virtual Boy numbers?

OTOH, it's a new tech in it's current form, and there is no real baseline to compare it to. The context of it's sales are that it's exceeded expectations of Sony, and many other people. Just there are still people that want to downplay it by setting higher expectations, but I know there were those who said it would fail, and quickly be forgotten, and that obviously hasn't happened yet, and it seems to be selling quicker than it did before if you go by recent numbers.

opc1873d ago

it's still early days but eventually simply selling more than another brand that is also not selling well won't be enough. After a while investors will want these numbers to be much higher so that publishers start making more games for VR.

KickSpinFilter1873d ago

The only thing you can compare today's VR is to is 90's VR booths in Cyber Cafes that's it.
PSVR is like the Blackberry of VR's time. Not many had Blackberry's but those who did knew that it was a game changer, and that led to the iphone/// iphone X. Sony when building knew that PSVR was not going to sell like PS4 or anything close to that. This is the first step. People poo, pooed the wheel at one time in history also. Who knows... it might not be Sony 10 years down the line with the top VR headgear, but VR is not going away.

On top of that lets talk about price point, I can easily sell you a $60 Kinect with a whole bunch of claims and advertising saying it's the next big thing. Or try to sell you a $400 PSVR with not much claims other than were trying something out new, with grassroots word of mouth. Sony knew from the start it would be hard to sell VR, unless ya get a unit on someones head. Hell I was even a little leery of PSVR even though I was able to try VR back in the 90's. I was able to try PSVR and was instantly sold.
With Battlezone, Res Evil 7, Beat Saber, Astro Bot, Super hot, Firewall Zero, Drive Club, Tetris Effect, Wipeout, Playroom, Creed, Ace Combat, Megaton Rainfall, Super Hyper Cube all prove VR is expanding and growing. Everyone who fears this thinks it's going to take over flat screen gaming, it's not... it's going to coexist

bluefox7551873d ago

You don't get as many clicks that way.

Zeref1873d ago (Edited 1873d ago )

Because that doesn't matter. 4 million sales is not enough for devs to profit. how many of those are even ACTIVE users?

VR in general is just not profitable for Devs right now.

There needs to be a breakthrough for VR to become mainstream. I think the problem is mostly that you're connected to a console/pc, headsets are still too bulky/ugly and it's not wireless.

Ridiculous. I read the article when at first I was going to ignore it.

Sony announces 4.2 million sold and that the headset sells between $200 and $450 (depending on bundles, extra accessories, sale prices, etc) and the downplay articles show up overnight. But we're told these articles don't exist and we're just imaging it.

Posting BS numbers and said it was unfair, but did it anyway to make the unfair comparison.

Before PSVR, Oculus and Vive were on the market, there were no high end VR headsets on the consumer market. None. And to be even more unfair, some compare the entire 90+ million PS4 fan base to PSVR's sales numbers when the platform came out when Sony was about 50 million in PS4 sales already. It didn't launch in 2013. It launched at the end in 2016 and wasn't cheap. Still isn't cheap. But sells over 100,000 a month on average. Any comparison to old CD attachments or Kinect cameras or Move controllers is ridiculous.

PSVR is selling. Many games are selling and hit a million like job simulator or Beat Saber. Many more games are coming. Core games are being made beyond simple things we saw on Wii or Kinect. Even Move had core games supported like Killzone. But PSVR murders even Move.

Keep downplaying if it makes you feel better. The naysayers thought it wouldn't sell. Wouldn't survive on consoles at a price higher than the console itself. You were wrong. It's getting exclusives that gamers thought it wouldn't but it is like Firewall, Astrobot and upcoming licensed games like Iron Man. The denial of its success won't stop VR from growing. Get used to it.

What I don't understand is why the naysayers want vr to fail? seriously I use mine every week and after playing Metro exodus I was like I can't fucking wait for something like that in vr, simply put Insane.

It's just a shame. With more full VR games on the system and a lower price point it could be so much more better in sales numbers. You have a VR headset and clearly feel very passionate about it but for me personally and for a lot of the PS fanbase the need to rush out and buy one isn't there.

How And Why Online Multiplayer Is Still A Thing For Dreamcast

A trailblazer for online gaming, some players are still holding a candle for Dreamcast.

such a shame, its my fav console by far. it was way better than ps1, problem was ps2 was due to come out, a year or so later, and many just waited for that, especially after the flop that was the Saturn,. (even though it way okay, it didn't sell well,).

ps1 did sell well, a lot of those fans waited for ps2. thus, the downfall of Dreamcast,,

Jingsing16h ago(Edited 16h ago)

Every console is responsible for its own destiny, You don't go around pointing fingers at him or her or anybody, cowards do that and that ain't you! you're better than that!

lodossrage15h ago(Edited 15h ago)

Not true,

The Dreamcast falling apart was because Sega couldn't make up the pay for the increasing debt from the Sega Master System, Game Gear, 32x, Sega CD, and Sega Saturn. The Dreamcast and Genesis were profitable. But the profits weren't outpacing the debt plus interest.

It had nothing to do with anyone waiting for the PS2

MetroidFREAK2115h ago

You're forgetting the most important part of the story. Sega was losing so much money so fast due to their past failures, they couldn't sustain the business. Even if the PS2 did help the demise of the system, the true blame is Sega themselves

lodossrage12h ago

Exactly

Even Bernie Stolar R.I.P (former Sega exect) admitted in an interview past debt was what hurt the Dreamcast.

Everyone says "Sony killed Sega" when that's not even remotely true. Not just that, but most of their debt came from fighting Nintendo, not Sony

ZeekQuattro10h ago

This. The only truly successful home platform Sega made was the Genesis. Every thing else flopped to varying degrees. The real culprits were Sega of Japan and Sega of America which went to war against each other for some odd reason.

Chocoburger20h ago

I bought a DreamPi to play both Dreamcast and Saturn online! So far I'm only played with two people online with Saturn, and I need to spend more time with the Dreamcast community in order to play with them. I miss ChuChu Rocket online, good times!

Profchaos19h ago

P2P there's even Sega genisis games that still connect online based on this.

Hosted servers wasn't really something I saw regularly on non oc platforms until the 360 era.

Ravenkiss15h ago

The Dreamcast was easily my favorite console of all time, home of many good fighting games

Report: Sexual Misconduct Investigation Conducted at EA, Suspects Named and What They Did Revealed

EA senior staff has been investigated for sexual misconduct involving female coworkers, and these said people have been named publicly.

isarai1d 21h ago

Aye just call Phil, i mean he somehow made Bobby Kotick's scandal disappear and gave him a few million dollar high five on the way out.

Cacabunga1d 12h ago

I wonder if it will be censored with some in game ads.

XiNatsuDragnel1d 18h ago (Edited 1d 18h ago )

EA about to go down like Activision and then Phil saves the day saying.this is good for the industry and consolidation will help create competition. /s.

ravens521d 16h ago

What's up with all these horny creeps. You gon be horny, fine. Just not at work take care of that shit before you go in. Rub one out if you have to. Don't be a creep at all. ESPECIALLY at work. But don't be one AT ALL.

Extermin8or3_1d 11h ago

I mean part of the issue is that things transpired outside of work....

KwietStorm_BLM1d 11h ago

You think deviants care where they are? Work sometimes makes it an even better situation for them because they can abuse their power.

mudakoshaka20h ago

Nerds think they are Gods when they are making video games.

NotoriousWhiz1d 16h ago (Edited 1d 16h ago )

"it seems that according to EA, given the events transpired outside of work between two adults, and the fact that once investigation has started that the alleged perpetrators didn’t do it again, the investigation is considered closed. [...] The victim still has to work with the people that harassed her."

Yep, EA is disgusting.

Extermin8or3_1d 11h ago

I mean the fact stuff happened outside of work puts EA in quite a difficult position legally. These women don't seem to have reported the matter to the police which kinda ties EA's hands on what they can do. If they don't file reports of the crimes then yeah from EA's perspective it is stuff that happened outside of work. The only exception is the guy that apparently referenced things in the slack channel for work, spending on what he said proving it may be very hard and he may well be able to get away with plausible deniability. I don't like EA and I think these people need to be dismissed but without any legal action being taken, EA can't really do much without risk of being sued themselves for unfair dismissal etc.

Xbox No Longer Has Its Head In The Game

Microsoft & Xbox have shut down Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks to lay off more workers, insinuating that they're not in the game anymore.

XiNatsuDragnel2d ago

They're headless for a long time because closing tango isn't exactly a good move

PapaBop1d 15h ago

Ever since that cringe Kinect reveal they've never been the same. They used to make some amazing games and do great deals with third parties Early on in the 360 era they had games like Chromehounds and Shadowrun, both well ahead of their time. Now instead of nurturing their studios, they'd rather gaslight gamers and throw billions on pre existing studios. Not sure how Spencer is still in a job, I wouldn't trust him to organise a piss-up in a brewery.

Father__Merrin1d 15h ago

We've said all along Spencer needs to go. I wish xbox went back to xbox only with new gears fable forza halo releases lots of third party releases

Those early rainbow 6 Vegas days and phantasy star universe are gone forever

S2Killinit1d 12h ago

MS has its head in the game but the game they are playing is something different from what console gamers expect from a platform. MS’s end game has always been to use the xbox as a trojan horse.

XiNatsuDragnel1d 10h ago

Lol that's funny well this plan they have isn't working homie

All damage reduced to 1 for 343 trillion turns.

Tacoboto2d ago

Especially for Microsoft, when Booty pretty much said they didn't know how to handle that many studios.

Why even make the acquisition then.

-Foxtrot2d ago

Didn’t they make the swipe for Bethesda when Sony wanted like 6 months exclusiveness for Starfield

It’s like…chill, you got Rise of the Tomb Raider for a year.

romulus232d ago

Do they always come with senseless cuts becasue that's exactly what cutting Tango was, senseless.

H92d ago

Everyone's acting now that game companies care about games and Xbox is committing the Ultimate betrayal, they are all like this and you have just been quiet about it for far too long

Nuclearmoon2d ago

I wonder if Microsoft do pull out of the console market that it might open the door for valve to relaunch the Steambox. Competition is good for the industry but Microsoft don't even seem to be trying anymore.

UltimateOwnage2d ago

Steam / Valve are one of the few truly pro-consumer bright spots in gaming right now. Thankfully.

Jingsing15h ago

From all the money Valve make from Steam they reinvest almost 0 into creating new AAA titles for the PC platform, Absolutely no giving nothing back in that regard. Wake up.
