Is Metal Gear Solid 1 worth playing in 2019?

As a little kid growing up in the ’90s, I gamed my way through puberty with consoles such as the PlayStation One and the Game Boy Color.

lptmg1879d ago

honestly... I'd go with Twin Snakes instead. Never understood the absolute hatred towards it

The_Sage1879d ago

The cutscene differences are the largest complaint. I have both... The original is better, in my opinion.

naruga1879d ago (Edited 1879d ago )

original MGS can be played in decades to come and i m playing through it once in a year....plays like eating an expensive chocolate .... for me is up there with legendry classics like RE1 (original PS1 ) , Sonic 2 , Castlevania , FF 7 , Mario ,and if we place it among classic movies--- Terminator 2 and og Star Wars

@Iptmg WTF ??/ Twin Snakes its like a chinese garbage copy in comparison to the original ...(i wonder how Kojima gave premission to be made) ....

Vandamme211879d ago

I could never get into the 1st metal gear solid . I thought it was boring compared to Syphon Filter.

NecrumOddBoy1879d ago

I replayed it about 8 years ago and it's definitely an archaic game, controls-wise. If you can manage to play it with a little more patience to learn how we gamed on PS1, then YES, because it's a phenomenal title.

TheFirstClassic1879d ago

When I first tried to play it I thought it had aged really poorly, but man, once I gave it some time I was hooked. Top 5 favorite games for me, despite its age, you just have to get good at the awkward mechanics of putting enemies in chokehold without alerting them. It eventually becomes second nature tho.

SegaSaturn6691879d ago

It's a bit too easy and disrupts the nature of the gameplay with the additions. I'd recommend upscaling on a ps1 emulator.

I'm surprised it's never been remade in HD.

Nu1879d ago (Edited 1879d ago )

Retro games were best played in their original released generation. If you didn't experience a game i n it's release console generation, it's difficult to appreciate. I thought Zelda Ocarina was mind blowing at it's time. Same goes for Metroid prime. Sometimes it's difficult to go back into nostalgia..

TheFirstClassic1879d ago

The voice acting honestly was much weaker in twin snakes.

jelloaceomega1879d ago

Problem with Twin Snakes is that Revolver was supposed to be ambidextrous, and Revolver had a scene that is non-canon. Where he can't hold his gun with he left hand.

gamerben1878d ago

first person shooting in twin snakes plays a role. It's a more modern mechanic yes but the game was never designed with that in mind so it makes it way too easy

generic-user-name1878d ago

Not only did they turn the cutscenes into something from the cutting room floor of a matrix movie, they took the mechanics from mgs2 and plopped them straight into mgs1's level design. It was incredibly lazy.

The only improvement were the visuals.

A good game is like a good book, or movie, timeless.

Gardenia1879d ago

Timeless indeed. I bought this game back in 1998 on the PS1, and I still play it from time to time. One of the best games ever made

Rangerman12081879d ago

Definitely. I might even say that this PS1 stealth game is far superior over Left Alive, a stealth game released in 2019.

I’d have taken a few of those out. Prefer Sonic over Sonic 2. Outrun should be in there. Maybe even Pong as millions of people had fun with that even if it was repetitive. Final Fight pipped any Streets of Rage game, although Streets of Rage had the better soundtrack. Too many to list l guess. To me, retro gaming is the 1980s, maybe going into early 1990s.

Popsicle56d ago

Agree that the generational gap is too broad to really make a strong list. Need to tighten the years a bit. Hard to compare Pac Man with N64 games.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater - Official Unreal Engine 5 Trailer | Xbox Partner Preview

Get a glimpse at how the remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 will be updated through the use of Unreal Engine 5.

Snookies12202d ago

It looks wonderful visually. Frame rate is very inconsistent though, and definitely running sub-30's at times. I get that this is an alpha version. I just hope we can hit a locked 60 on the final release. Also, I kind of wish they'd expanded the areas a bit. Might feel a bit odd going through these sections that are still clearly going to be on a PS2 scale in size.

neutralgamer1992201d ago

They should expand where necessary and I really hope they do justice to this remake. IMO this remake should be top tier like dead space, resident evil 2 & 4 and demon souls

I am speaking quality wise

CrimsonWing69202d ago

Holy sh*t that looks good! I hope they don't censor it.

GamerRN201d ago

What is there to censor, I never played 3

An Xbox adventure in the jungle

BehindTheRows201d ago

*A multiplatform adventure in the jungle.

autobotdan201d ago

Mentions xbox on n4g. Prepares for nasty n4g comments replys

BehindTheRows201d ago

I mean, you can say that to yourself while you're drugged up on Xbox pills. Changes nothing. :)

autobotdan201d ago

Man you get insulted whan someone mentions xbox. You might need medicine

BehindTheRows201d ago

"Insulted" — says the guy running around like a headless chicken trying to convince folks to care about his favorite box. Ok champ!

BehindTheRows201d ago (Edited 201d ago )

If you actually have a counter argument to this being a multiplatform game and how "A multiplatform adventure in the jungle" was a "nasty reply", I'm all ears.

I'll even help you... what is the counter to this being a multiplatform game and why is that a nasty reply?

autobotdan201d ago (Edited 201d ago )

I was never in any argument or debate. You accused me of being on xbox pills. That was a nasty reply. I am done here. Not going to waste my time here

BehindTheRows201d ago (Edited 201d ago )

I mean, if someone responds to you with a factual correction and you reply with "Xbox xbox xbox", I'm not sure what kind of response should be expected.

If someone replied with "Ps ps ps", I'm sure you would wonder what is going on, especially if nothing wrong was said to you.

autobotdan201d ago

A factual correction?? What the..? I'm very confused here What were you correcting?

BehindTheRows201d ago

I thought you were done? :P

Answer: it's just as much a PlayStation/PC adventure as it is Xbox.

autobotdan201d ago

So i hurt your feelings by not mentioning Playstation/pc on an Xbox event article correct?

BehindTheRows201d ago

Hurt MY feelings? Once again, if someone replies with "Xbox xbox xbox", it's clear that they are affected by something more than they should be. You then double down with some BS about N4G (like this place is immune to trash talked about anyone else but them).

Plus, I thought you were leaving? You can't help yourself. XD

Unreal Engine...how disappointing.

Apovyk201d ago

UE5 is the best looking engine on the market today - why is that disappointing?

RedDeadLB201d ago

Because, at the moment, the most technically problematic and disappointing games run on it. 540p upscaled next gen goodness.

DarXyde201d ago

Disappointing if resolution is a huge deal for you.

Personally, I feel a re-tooled FOX Engine would have done great. If it was a PS5/PC only title, I think Decima would have been an excellent choice.
