EA Responds To Reports Of 'Anthem' Bricking PS4 Consoles

EA:

We’re aware of a crashing issue some of you have been reporting for Anthem. We’re investigating and ask that you share your crash data reports when prompted.

Double_O_Revan1901d ago

Not quite yet the disaster that was Fallout 76, but they're trying pretty hard.

badz1491900d ago

at least FO76 didn't brick or shut down the console afaik

AnthonyDavis1900d ago

Gamers shouldn’t get a refund. PS4 is a 1 year warranty.

Sono4211900d ago

This is def worse than FO76

sinspirit1900d ago

@AnthonyDavis

Ah. So, they should keep the game that broke the console, and send in their PS4's for the warranty because PS4 totally doesn't have over 80million units out of warranty. But, keep the game that broke it. Yeah. Don't get your money back for the game that inconvenienced you and will inevitably drop in price or go on sale by the time your console comes back if it was still under warranty.

WilliamSheridan1900d ago

I don't understand how Sony approved something that bricks their console. I know it's impossible to test everything, but this seems severe

AirJohnston1900d ago

@AnthonyDavis yes, the 1 year warranty should cover a system that released over 5 years ago

indysurfn1900d ago (Edited 1900d ago )

@AnthonyDavis, Sony should not have to replace ps4's for powering down because of EA. EA should In fact Microsoft should not either, nor should a pc manufacturer, or the person that built it themselves.

rainslacker1899d ago

You cant brick the consoles completely through a game. The system itself is protected from such changes to the hardware, and the way to restore it is available outside a catastrophic system failure. It's possible the game software can cause corruption to the file system, which can make it require a rebuild of the databases(file system), or a reinstallation of the system through the restore mode.

Because of this, there would be no need to send it in for warranty repair...assuming the reports of bricking are true.

As far as how Sony can let something like that through, it's because the way compliance testing is done, they don't sit there and play the game for hours on end to come to every eventuality. That is something that EA should have found during their own testing, and it's quite possible it's just random occurances which aren't repeatable, so couldn't be fixed fully in development. Compliance testing requires but reports be submitted for any crash scenario which is repeatable....and is usually dealt with before final compliance testing. The actual testing runs simulations on the code to see if it will do something that isn't acceptable, but it can't always catch everything, as a game can easy go through tens of thousands of scenarios in the execution of code interaction, and it's just not possible to account for every eventuality....which is why hypervisors are used to protect the system, and most software crashes just send you back to the main OS screen.

sinspirit1899d ago

@Unspoken

Sony has repeatedly been at the top in terms of reliability, consistency, and thorough design. What's wrong with their quality? Sounds like you just feel the need to be negative towards them even if unfounded.

Yep, kind of like how a particular Wendy's my weekly bible study/board game group meets at is trying to outslow its city's KFC/Taco Bell. It's fighting a losing battle, mind you. No one can outslow that KFC/Taco Bell. On the other hand, Anthem does have ammunition to work with in the disaster contest they started, especially if this bricking consoles thing is true.

MasterChief36241900d ago (Edited 1900d ago )

What the hell are you on about?

sprinterboy1900d ago

I'm scared for humanity sometimes, wtf are you on about.

AdmGenAladeen1900d ago

Bible study, KFC/Taco Bell, Wendy's. All of these have something in common with Anthem. Can you guess what it is?

Teflon021900d ago

adm
They're all bad for you. Essentially... TRASH

RememberThe3571900d ago

Maybe he's from a small town? But Bible study at a Wendy's? That's some serious hick sh!t right there.

Valkron11900d ago

Damn it! I chained a monkey to a typewriter and it took 8 years to write that same sentence 😡

TheColbertinator1900d ago

Get some decent food in your bible study group.

PoSTedUP1899d ago

dude, i tried, and im pretty good at understanding ppl. seems like you made a vaguely piss-poor comparison with piss-poor food chains in relation to piss-poor games.

YOU SEE WHAT YOU DO, EA?!?!

Old McGroin1900d ago

I've been reading anecdotal examples from other people, mainly on reddit, about how other games have caused their PS4's to shut down as if the power plug was yanked. Off the top of my head Kingdom Hearts 1.5 (I think, definitely a KH game anyway) was one. It happens, it's not exclusively an Anthem issue. Just happens to slot nicely into the Anthem hatred campaign currently going on is all.

RosweeSon1900d ago

Had my PS4 since day one recently upgraded to a pro rarely does a game crash let alone shut the console down and or Brick it. With 80+ million out there in households you’d have heard a lot more about it otherwise.

maybelovehate1900d ago

Yep, more than likely just an overheating issue. Could be caused by the hardware itself, environment etc. If Anthem was really bricking consoles we would definitely know. It wouldn't be one person lol

rainslacker1899d ago (Edited 1899d ago )

I've had it happen before, but can't remember what game it was. It didn't result in bricking the console though, and if I had to guess, that terminology isn't probably the right thing to say. Bricking refers to the console becoming unusable, which is exceptionally hard to do on modern consoles as the files are protected on the system, and the core hardware of the system has a way to boot without the need for the OS itself.

I've had some games that crash from time to time. More than one or two. It usually hangs, then kicks you back to the XMB after shutting down the game, then asks if you want to send a report. I usually do.

Not saying that a complete bricking is not possible, it would probably require actual effort on the part of the developer to make it happen though, and more likely would be due to the way Sony's API's didn't protect the right files in its system operations.

jairusmonillas1900d ago

Fallout Shelter on PS4 has similar bricking capabilities last year. lol
https://www.reddit.com/r/fo...

RomanPSX1900d ago

But FO 76 was a quick money grab, I dont think was was in development more than 2 years and runs in an oldddd engine. Anthem has been in Dev for 6 years, newer engine. there is no excuse for Anthem! The only games worth from EA are BF and Fifa for me, I know some dont like BF, some people love the Sims. Hopefully they will have the balls and attitude Ubisoft has and will invest more and fix the game like they did with Rainbow six.

-Foxtrot1900d ago

Guess they don't want to talk about the poor reception then...figures.

Sciurus_vulgaris1900d ago

I remember when Battlefield 4 would hard crash my Xbox One. Anthem crashing PS4s to the point where they brick is unacceptable and EA looks like they may have reached a new low.

Teflon021900d ago

To be fair, bricking consoles is on the Devs, not the publisher as they're not the ones that coded a game that does that. They have to hold responsibility but they didn't do it. It was devs who've failed to get it right

Sciurus_vulgaris1900d ago

The dev in question is owned and managed by EA, BioWare isn’t a contracted studio.

Fluttershy771900d ago

I bet you, I bet you goddammit, EA were the ones that forced the game to be rushed

SegaGamer1900d ago

Doesn't EA get tired of all of the criticism? They just can't seem to go a decent length of time without doing something to annoy it's consumers.

I'm amazed people stick by them, they will never change.

badz1491900d ago

they just like to be in the spotlight. bad publicity is still a publicity, I guess

BuildTheWall1899d ago (Edited 1899d ago )

Bad publicity is better than no publicity in E.A's eyes!!!

Tross1900d ago

I think I would be more than mildly annoyed if my console got bricked. I would treat that as treason and never buy the products of a company whose game did that ever again.

Retroman1900d ago

Stop buying Ea games after NFS became open world mapping trash.

chris2351900d ago

yeah but people love to be insane: trying and trying and always hoping for a different outcome.

SlagWolf1900d ago

EA is like that abusive boyfriend that lies and beats you and the girl the gamer that despite every one with any sense telling her to leave it’s nevee going to change and he’s said he would over 20X and is only getting worse just continues to stay with him and lies to herself that it’s not as bad as others say.

Anthem Sold A Solid 5 Million Copies In Its Lifetime

The multiplayer action RPG shipped a whopping 2 million copies in its first week alone.

JEECE149d ago

A nice piece of proof-as if anymore was needed-that a game isn't automatically a success if it sells "millions of copies."

RiseNShine149d ago

I don't know if it's still possible, but if it still works, PLAY IT. It's a fantastic RPG on it's own, incredible graphics and story, well worth the Bioware name, i don't know how bad it was on release, but when i played years later it was a great single player RPG well worth playing.

ChasterMies149d ago

This a good example of why you should be hesitant to buy a game at launch.

--Onilink--149d ago

Its has been on sale multiple times for like $2-3… and even when not that aggressively dropped, it is usually in the under $10 category of any sale

BlackCountryBob149d ago

That’s good, but also worth pointing out that after maybe 3 months on sale, this game was selling for about a tenner. Reminds me a bit of Days Gone, good sales overall but only after huge discounts so unlikely to make large profit

What a shitty f***** list! Most of the games on it were great fun. Bullshit list.

chantii_mmohaven492d ago

yep this is truly a b*tthurt list :/

MadLad491d ago

I think the only one I agreed on was Anthem, and even that isn't horrendous.

Knushwood Butt493d ago

Anthem; I'd forgotten that game existed. I remember thinking the trailer was BS though; turns out I was right.

Cueil491d ago

the game wasn't bad though

RavenWolfx492d ago

"Worst big budget games" and immediately lists Genshin Impact, a game that has $4 billion in revenue.

blackblades492d ago

$3 billion and counting along with alot of users. I disagree with that being on the list. This list is just a person opinion without merit

monkey602492d ago

I havent played Genshin Impact and Mafia 3 was alright. The rest though I kind of agree with.
I loved the 1st Kane and Lynch and I could not understand how the 2nd game was as bad as it was.

Aloymetal1017d ago (Edited 1017d ago )

Including indies I’ve bought like more than 20 games, good deals all around.

P_Bomb1017d ago

I’ve overindulged too! Gonna pump the brakes on this next round. Unless there’s a PS+ discount. Need a cheap sub for my kid so I’m not always changing primaries.

solideagle1017d ago (Edited 1017d ago )

could you please suggest good indie games (which are on sale)? I love JRPGs or action RPGs but I can play almost any genre e.g. Transistor is £3.74 which I think is a steal :)

shinoff21831017d ago

Check out earthlock. Its pretty good

Old school jrpg try cosmic star heroine I really like that one

Aloymetal1017d ago

Disco elysium, man eater, inside, limbo
Dead cells, observer, to name a few

LoveSpuds1016d ago

Don't sleep on Darkest Dungeon, Child of Morta or Spiritfarer.

Although it won't be on sale, the best indie I have ever played is release in a week or so, it may be 20 quid but you have to play Hades.

GhostofHorizon1017d ago

Told my partner to stop me from browsing. We'll see how that goes, the first part of the sale already got me.

ElvisHuxley1017d ago (Edited 1017d ago )

Anthem 85% off? Thought they went free to play. Has the game gotten any better?
Edit-Nvm, it's Europe anyway.

Hellcat20201017d ago

The second phase of sales is for all regions
It's just not yet showing up in the ps store

Servbot411017d ago

They abandoned Anthem. Typical EA.

CobraKai1016d ago

I can’t believe they’re still trying to sell it

BioShockGX1016d ago

Got Anthem for $5 last year. Not a bad game for that price lol

ElvisHuxley1015d ago

Appreciate the downvotes folks. I guess merely asking a question bothers the incredibly mature users here.

anast1017d ago

I might finally go for Black Desert. I've been playing ESO (without MTing my characters) for some throw away entertainment, but the combat is so "#$&&%.

Servbot411017d ago

BDO sucks. Only good for the character creator.

anast1017d ago

Is the combat worth it?

Phoenixryu1017d ago

I tried BDO a few months ago. It's a decent game but I got bored of it pretty quickly. Combat is very action-based, it's fun but very repetitive. There are a lot of menus and most of the in-game systems are a bit more complicated than they needed to be. Some game modes won't let you buy and sell certain items until you convert to a different mode etc. Basically, the game is kind of convoluted.

phoenixwing1017d ago

The mobs barely react in bdo. You can kill half of a mob of enemies before they'll even attack. You'll basically be grinding mobs until you can fight a boss that will even react well. Don't recommend it

anast1015d ago

Thanks. Is there an alternative to ESO?

phoenixwing1015d ago

@anast I'd recommend playing the single player version of es if you haven't exhausted your playthroughs

EvertonFC1017d ago

Highly recommend the "metro saga bundle" £25 all 3 games and all DLC plus free upgrade for ps5 exodus 😊
